Transfer SQL 6.5 Databases To SQL 2005 Server

Jun 6, 2007

I got 2 SQL servers. One is legacy SQL 6.5 and the other one is SQL 2005. They are installed in different machine. How can I copy or migrate the old 6.5 version databases to SQL 2005 server?

Someone said I should upgrade the 6.5 to version 2000 first. Is it the only method? I didn't have SQL 2000 install cdrom and license. How can I do that?

Please help.

Source And Destination Databases On Same Server While Data Transfer Using SSIS

May 9, 2007

Hi,

I am having one query regarding data transfer using SSIS. If we use

DTS packages for the data transfer between two databases then the source database and

destination database must be on different db servers or instances. Here, I

am talking about the DTS Packages with Distributed Transactions enabled.

I need to know that whether this constraint has been rectified with SSIS Packages or it still persists.

One more thing is that while transferring the data, can we view/insert/update source database or it is locked if the transfer is in process.

Please reply..........

MS-SQL7 Transfer Databases

Nov 13, 1998

Hi there,

I would like to make multiples copies of a database. What I used to do in MS-SQL 6.5 was create a backup of the database that I want to make copy from. Create new (empty) databases and restored the backed up database into the new databases. Another way that I used to do is to use the Database Transfer feature in the Enterprise Manager.

I want to do the same thing in MS-SQL 7 (beta 3) but it seems to me that I couldn't do that. First, there is no Database Transfer feature like that in 6.5. Next, I couldn't restore a backed up database to another database.

I know there is the Import/Export utility but it is the last thing I have to use if I don't have any other choice.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Data Transfer Between Databases Different Structur

Sep 18, 2006

Ok say we've got two databases with two tables and we need to
transfer data from one to another. However, the data structure in
sourceDB is different to targetDB. Better to illustrate:
sourceDB
tablesource
PIN SYSTEM HEADER PROPERTY VALUE STATUS
1000 AF ADDRESS DETAILS LINE 1 The Grange Active
1000 AF ADDRESS DETAILS LINE 2 69 Tintagel Way
1000 AF ADDRESS DETAILS LINE 3 Woking
1001 AF ADDRESS DETAILS LINE 1 50 Active
8888 AF ADDRESS DETAILS LINE 2 Evans Way
8888 AF ADDRESS DETAILS LINE 3 Islington
8888 AF ADDRESS DETAILS
8888 AF ADDRESS DETAILS
8888 AF ADDRESS DETAILS

Now each matching PIN on the multiple rows in sourceDB above relates to
one customer. In order to extract the relevant info for an address for
instance for each customer, we need to know the unique PIN, header,
property and value fields.

So I created this piece of SQL which gives me the result in targetDB:

INSERT into targetDB.dbo.tabletarget (address1)
SELECT
value
FROM sourceDB.dbo.tablesource
WHERE pin = 1000
AND header ='address details'
AND property = 'line 1'

targetDB
tabletarget
PIN ADDRESS1 ADDRESS2 ADDRESS3 SOURCE
The Grange

Fine, I've proved I can extract a specific field, but I need to do
this for all fields and all customers.

Any ideas?

Advice Needed - Regarding Data Transfer Between Databases On Seperate Servers

Aug 29, 2007

Hello everyone,
Here's my situation...
I'm running a web service which involves 51 seperate servers and databases.
There are fifty licensee servers (One for each US state) and one corporate server.
Each night I need to upload sales and membership data from the licensee's databases to the corporate database to compile reports.
The application platform I'm using is ASP.NET 2.0 and the the database is SQL2005 express.
I want this process to be run automatically, so I believe it's a scheduled windows service I need to setup up in .NET to make the data transfers.
If anyone has already set something up like this, or knows the steps to take? I would love to have your input.
Thanks in advance,

SQL Server 2005: Copying Tables And Stored Procedures Between Databases On Same Server

Mar 5, 2008

This question is about SQL Server 2005:
I have been trying to figure out how to copy tables and stored procedures between 2 databases (on the same server) using SQL Server Management Studio. I have tried right clicking on the table name, "script table as", "drop to", "clipboard", then I click on the 2nd database, and then click on the "tables" . I change the name of the database and click "execute". This creates the table but does not copy the data. I have also tried "create to" "clipboard" and "insert to" "clipboard" and cannot seem to be able to figure out how to get the results that I want. I am new at this but need to get the tables with the data copied along with the stored procedures, even if I have to do them one at a time. When I was using SQL Server 2000, I was able to use DTS to copy objects to other databases easily. Can someone please tell me a way to accomplish what I need to do? I have gotten information here before that was very useful and was hoping that someone can help me again.Thank you so much. Carol Quinn

Creating Databases On WinXP SP2 With SQL Server 2005 CE RC

Nov 28, 2006

Hi,

For various reasons a new desktop application I am developing is using the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Release Candidate to store local data. On my development machine (XP SP2, VS2005, SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition) the software is able to create the database file, and read and write to it fine.

However on our test machine, which does not have any of the development tools the software is unable to create the database. A System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException is thrown. The message is: "SQL Mobile usage is restricted on this platform. To use SQL Mobile, you must install SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, or the Tablet PC SKU." Obviously this goes somewhat against the blurb for SQL Server CE.

Is this something that will be fixed shortly? Or is it the intention that databases can't be created on machines that do not SQL Server or Visual Studio installed? (Incidentally the reason for creating the database on the fly is that we are encrypting it, using the users credentials, so that only they can open the database.)

Thanks, Steve

Creating Sql Server 2005 Express Databases Via VS2005 Std.

Dec 5, 2007

This post is an extension onto the one below....
Please read my question at the bottom... cheers

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sept. 26th 2006

Hello all,

I use Visual Studio 2005 Standard. I would like to know the best way that I can create Sql Server 2005 Express databases visually since VS2005 Std. does not allow me to do it.
Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance,

- Noble Bell

I'd be interested in knowing how VS doesn't allow you to create a database. What error are you getting?
There are two ways to create databases, depending on your goal:

To just create a database on your server, do the following:

Open the Server Explorer
Right-click on Data Connections
Click Create New SQL Server Database
Specify Server Name and Database Name

Your database will be created and you can start working with it.

Embed a database in your project:

On the Project menu, click Add New Item.
Select SQL Database from the list and give it a name.
Click OK

This will run you thorugh a wizard to create the database.
If your having problems doing either of these, you may not have SQL Server installed on your computer or VS might be pointing to the wrong Instance Name. Check out the Option dialog under Database Tools:ata Connection and verify that the correct instance is specified.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am trying to create a similar project and I also recieve an error while trying to create a database...

"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this
failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could Not Open A Connection to SQL Server."

Now let me explain what i am trying to do ...
I am trying to create a web interface for the data that I want to store in the SQL database. I have installed VS2005 & SQL Server Express 2005 on my local machine. I want to develope this project on my local machine and then transfer it to a server once i have finished the project.

If i am doing this all wrong, please let me know !

Transferring Data From Postgres 8.x Databases To SQL Server 2005

Feb 4, 2007

I have a requirement to pull data from several large tables residing in a Postgres 8.x (PG) database into our SQL Server 2005 warehouse every night. I have been doing this via data dumps to a file then bulk loading said file into SQL2005 but I am running into character encoding issues and newlines embedded in some of the strings which is causing the bulk loader some problems.

I would like to take advantage of the power of SSIS to move the data. I cannot find a current working OLEDB driver for PG and I cannot find an ODBC Data Flow Source in SSIS to use the ODBC driver that is available for PG so I am stuck.

If someone would be kind enough to shed some light on whether this is possible and if so where I could get the instructions on how to do it I would be most appreciative.

Thanks.

Creating And Using SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Databases

Jan 17, 2007

OK I think I am missing something here. I have installed the newly released SQL Compact Edition, Server Tools, and Tools for VS SP1. According to the documentation you can do the following to create a SQL Compact Edition DB:

Creating a SQL Server Compact Edition database on the server

In SQL Server Management Studio, open Object Explorer.

In Object Explorer, click Connect, and then choose SQL Server Compact Edition.

In the Connect to Server dialog box, select <New Database€¦> from the Database file drop-down list.

In the Create New SQL Server Compact Edition Database dialog box, type a file path and file name for the new database file. You can optionally select the default sort order and choose whether you want to encrypt or password-protect the database. If you choose to encrypt or password-protect the database, type a password, and then click OK.

Click Connect to connect to the new SQL Server Compact Edition database. The database is now displayed in Object Explorer.

I see no reference to or any option to create or connect to a SQL Server Compact Edition database in SQL Mgmt Studio. I had SQL 2005 Mobile installed previously and this still shows as an option. What I am missing here? Is SQL Mobile now SQL Compact Editon?

Thanks in advance,

Jack
