Transferring Data From MSDE Database To SQL 2000 Database
Jul 23, 2005
Hi all,
Here is my situation.
I have an application that uses SQL 2000. The client has a program
that uses MSDE. The client MUST have the MSDE version of the Database.
What I have done is to create a SQL 2000 Database that is exactly like
the MSDE version. What I wish to do, is at regularly scheduled
intervals, update the SQL 2000 Data with the newest MSDE Data.
On my clients server, they have both MSDE and SQL 2000 installed
the msde has a user name and password to access it, whereas the SQL
2000 uses authenticated mode to access it.
What I'm trying to do is to write a bunch of SQL Queries, that I can
run that will copy over the new Data, but I'm having problems accessing
the msde database in query analyzer from the SQL Database
Can anyone give me hints on the best way to try this
Thanks
Scott

Trying to transfer databases from MSDE to SQL. When I use SQLEnterprise Manager - DTS - import or export, it works for the firstdatabase, but then fails for the others. I select the to and fromdatabases using DTS - Import - 'MS OLE DB Provider for SQL Server',then select 'Copy objects and data between SQL Servers'. It failswith the generic error message: 'Copy objects failed', nothingfurther. I tried to just copy data, and it doesn't work totally. Ontwo databases, it said that it copied everything, but when I go inunder Enterprise manager, some of the tables are incomplete, i.e. nodata, table shows up in the list, but if you try to look at it, itsays that it is missing or empty. Also, one table was not evencopied. In the other two cases, I get errors, does not copy alltables. I get errors, like insert fails, but the column it referencesfor the table does not even exist in that table. Any suggestionswould be appreciated.

It is assumed the max database size for MSDE 2000 is 2GB. But actually I am able to save more than 2 GB to an MSDE database, now its size is more than 5GB. I am confused. What is the actual size limit for MSDE?

I have a medical records system, SoapWare v4.90, that uses MSDE (SQL2000) databases. Due to the 2gb limitation, I am trying to migrate over to SQL 2005 (Standard or Express) which I have heard works fine. The SoapWare has a datamanager that allows me to log in to the MSDE instance, detach the SoapWare databases from msde (as well as do backups, etc) which I can confirm are detached.
Then I log back into a SQL2005 database instance using the datamanager and try to attach the database. This is what their pictured instructions demonstrate. However, I get the following error:
Database 'sw_charts' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.
Of course, some of the entries will be read only, since doctors have to sign off the charts and are not allowed to subsequently change them. But I should still be able to switch over to sql 2005?!?!?!?
Or... is there a way to attach the databases to SQLExpress manually?
Help pls?

Hi,Ive been building a project on a local server and now need to transfer the files and database over to the live server. I have managed to transfer the files quite easily, however I am having a few problems transferring the database using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. When I try importing data to the live database, all the data and tables are brought across however some of the values for the fields are lost. For example all the fields which had a primary key no longer have one, and all the set default values for the fields are also lost. Ive been considering just going through every table in the database and re-entering the correct values for the fields, but this seems a bit time consuming and I'm also concerned about possible errors which could arise as there will be an inconsistency.Another method I tried was copying the SQL query across which created all the tables and the correct values for the fields. However when I tried to import the data an error was produced as you cannot import data into a table which has read only fields etc..Does anyone know a solution?Thanks for your time.

Good morning one and all,
I need to transfer a database (contining one table) containing over 35 million records from one server to another. I have two options at present :
(a) Use DTS to do the transfer
(b) Copy the mdf file across and sp_attach_db it
Does any1 have a better idea, or does any1 know which of the two methods will be the quickest?
TIA

I have a SSIS package that transfers a couple of tables from one database to another database on the same server. It works fine in most of the machines we tested with. However on one of the customer machines, it consistently fails with the error message, The Return value was unknown. The process exit code was -1073741795. The step failed.
This package runs as a scheduled job on the sql agent. When i did a sql profiler to see what is going on, i noticed that the last step before the bulk insert, it gets the collation and the schema id of the 2 tables. My guess is, it compares these values from the source and destination databases and makes sure everything is ok before copying.
On a machine where this works, it goes ahead with the the next step which is the bulk insert itself. Whereas on the machines where it doesn't work, it stops right after this step. i.e. it does not even bother to call the 'bulk insert' api. Which makes me think it is doing some kind of validation with these values and it is getting something that is not expected.
If the collation or the schema was an issue, why throw an 'return value unknown' error? Can the error be more specific?
Any other possible reasons for such a behavior? Any clues?
Thanks
Gopal

I set up a basic Transfer Database task (online, copy) to copy a DB. It works great except for the fact that it isn't transferring the PK's and FK's. It also looks like it did not transfer the views. Any idea why? Anything else the Transfer Database task doesn't actually transfer?

Hi All,
We are working on a project, (C#.Net 2003, MS SQL 2000) where database is growing as 2 to 3 GB per day (Scanned Documents are storing in Database). There is only one table in the database. Currently database size is grown upto 200 GB. For safety reason we are planning to split the database accoring to one key field in the table say Book_no.
Please guide/suggest me how to split the database now on the SQL query like "SELECT * FROM master_records WHERE book_no=1"
And later how to merge/combine all these splitted database into one.
I thought of using "Data Export" and later "Import with Append" but don't know whethere it will effective or not? Any method or tool available to Split the database table and later combine them to make again a single one?
Please help me, its urgent.
Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to get a database from SQL2005 to SQL2000. I already recreated the database in SQL2005 and I'm just trying to get some data from just a few tables.
It doesn't appear the DTS or any export functionality is available in my version of SQL Express 2005...so how do I do this. I've tried installing everything I can find.
I've also tried BCP but I keep getting these errors:
SQLState = 08001, NativeError = 53
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53].
SQLState = HYT00, NativeError = 0
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Login timeout expired
SQLState = 08001, NativeError = 53
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
This is a LOCAL database and I have tried -T for trusted, I have also tried a username and password combination. The database is set to Allow Remote connections. Nothing is working.

Hello anyone / everyone,
If you are having trouble accessing Meta Data Services on W2k3 and SQL 2000 and get the error that the "msdb database could not be opened" I found that hot fix 912812 on the operating system is the culprit. Remove it and Meta Data goes back to working, although I am being asked to approve the ActiveX control every time the page refreshes.
Hope this helps somebody, to took me long enough to track it down.
If anyone has a resolution to the ActiveX question I'd love to know the answer.
Thank you,
Uncle Davy

I am working on a project that was written in Visual Studio 2003 using asp.net and C#. The project accesses a SQL Server 2000 database. I need to test the application. What I want to do is to copy the database over to a test server. The problem is that the test server only has SQL Server 2005 on it. Would it be a problem if I backed up the database using SQL Server 2000 and then recreated it on the server as a SQL server 2005 project? Would my source code accept the new database even though it would now be in sql server 2005?

I am having immense difficulties trying to transfer tables, sprocs, udfs, etc, from a production SqlServer2000 server to a testing SqlServer2005 server.
Under SS2000 this was easy, using the DTS wizard. Apparently that's no longer an option.
I've tried the Transfer Database, Transfer Sql Server Objects tasks and the wizard in BIDS, and they all fail (for different reasons).
Help!!!!

i have sql 2005 installed on my personal machine, but our server has sql 2000 on it. the structure of my database was made on the server, but i'm not sure how to update the server copy from my local copy. when i try to export my data from my local machine to the server (or import from my local machine to the server), i get pre-execute errors.
roughly every other week, i'll need to be able to update the server version from my local version, so i'm trying to find the most efficient method. what is the best way to update a 2000 database from a 2005 database? it doesn't matter if i append or overwrite, but i do use identity fields. the error i get when trying to use the import/export wizard is:
