Transferring Ownership Of A View To The Schema Owner
Apr 3, 2007
Greetings,
I read msdn article and has the following:Transferring ownership of a view to the schema owner
The following example transfers ownership the view ProductionView06 to the owner of the schema that contains it. The view is located inside schema Production. ALTER AUTHORIZATION ON OBJECT::Production.ProductionView06 TO SCHEMA OWNER;
GOso what i understand that i can create an object within a schema that has a different owner from the owner of the schema!!!is this true ? so if if it is true so what the benefits to create an object within a schema that has a different owner from the owner of the schema.?your help is highly appreciatedbest regards

Hi,
I have a replication in which publisher, distributer and subscriber all runing on sql server 2005. all the tables that needs to be replicated are under 'dbo' schema on publisher.
Subscriber is a datawarehouse so i dont want to put tables coming from a system to go under dbo schema as there might be other application replicating same name tables to warehouse. i have created a schema for my application on warehouse but dont know how to tell replication to create tables under application schema created on subscriber. I am using snapshot replication that can be reinitialized if required.
any help will be appriciated.
Cheers,

Hi all--I used the following type of script to migrate tables, views and stored procedures from 'dbo' to 'hqmsuser':
alter authorization on dbo.PK_T_PQ_MASTER to HQMSUSER
alter schema HQMSUSER transfer dbo.PK_T_PQ_MASTER
go
This was per recommendations from the BOL to use instead of the 'sp_changeobjectowner' procedure. I returned the following error:
Msg 15346, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Cannot change owner for an object that is owned by a parent object. Change the owner of the parent object instead.
Msg 15347, Level 16, State 1, Line 4
Cannot transfer an object that is owned by a parent object.
How do I find and change the parent object on this from 'dbo' to a non-dbo schema ownership?

I'm building my app in the full blown MS SQL 2005 Standard Edition as our new app will have a enterprise version using SQL 2005 and a desktop version using either SQL Compact Edition 2005, VistaDB3, or maybe even (uggh) SQL Express 2005. I would prefer SQL Express 2005 but the install size of my app + DB would kill sales.
Back to my question. I'm building out the schema in the full SQL 2005, how do I take this schema and get the schema applied to a SQL Compact Edition DB?
Does SQL Compact Edition support DDL?
Thanks.

I am merging two databases and created two different schemas to contain the objects in the new DB. I would like the objects in both schemas to be visible to one user but I can't figure out how to make this happen. I thought I could just set the Owner of the schemas to the same User but that didn't work. At the moment, the User default schema is set to dbo. I would like the default to be both schemas but this isn't an option.
Is there any way to have multiple schema objects visible to a single user? Thanks!

I have a schema/user called mstp who has tables in another schema/user. How do I prevent the mstp user from seeing those tables/data that do not belong to their schema?
example:
database xxxx has tables som.employees and mstp.employees The mstp user should only allowed access to mstp.employees and nothing else.
thanks.

I have a database that has been upgraded from SQL 200 to 2005. The database was owned by 'Joe' and all objects were also owned by 'Joe'. In SQL 2000 when Joe logged in he could simply issue 'select * from table' and would get results.
The upgraded db now has a user Joe and a schema Joe. All objects now belong to the schema Joe. Joe the user has his default schema set to Joe and he is the owner of the schema. When Joe logs in and tries to 'select * from table' he gets an invalid object. He can 'select * from joe.table'.
How can I set it up so that the objects are still owned by the schema Joe and a simple 'select * from table' works when user Joe logs in? I was convinced that is he owned the schema and this was his default schema it should work.
Thanks

Hi
I have a schema called Accounts owned by fred
User bob has create procedure permission as follows:
grant create procedure to bob
bob would like to create a procedure in schema Accounts.
When he issues create proc Accounts.sp_proc.... it fails with:
Msg 2760, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_proc, Line 3
The specified schema name "Accounts" either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it.
What permission do I need to grant bob in order to allow this?
Thanks

When reverse engineering a SQL Server 2005 database (using VS 2007 Professional), I can't figure out a way to display the schema name in front of the table name in the database diagram. For instance, If I have a table named Person.Type, it just comes over as Type. It knows what the schema is because it's in the properties box for that object. It just doesn't appear in the name on the shape itself. Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing that will display the schema in the name?

Hi,
I am currently migrating from Oracle to MS SQL Server 2005 using SSIS. Since the new schema being used on the SQL Server is very different, we have created separate packages for each target table.
We have several different sets of data stored as separate Oracle schemas, and I would now like to change to a different schema for the OLE DB Source objects in my packages to use (Table/column names to remain the same). While I can go through all packages and search through the drop-down list to select the table of the same name from other Schema, doing so is an extremely slow process.
Is it possible to use configuration files to set a schema to be used for a number of OLE DB Sources over a number of packages?
At the moment I am doing a find and replace over the .dtsx files, but can't believe I have to resort to this for something that I imagine many people would want to do with SSIS.
Thank you,
The Captain

One of our databases has at some point in its dark past had the owner of the guest schema changed to be a named user, rather than the default guest user. Correcting this feels like it would be easy enough by running the following...
ALTER AUTHORIZATION ON SCHEMA::guest TO guest
but that results in..
Msg 15150, Level 16, State 2, Line 3
Cannot alter the schema 'guest'.
I realise the guest schema is a special one, and cannot be dropped, but I'm not trying to do that. End goal is to export the database to a SQL Azure DB, and this guest schema assignment is blocking that process from completing.

What is the equivalent for views?

I notice that when I change my table schema, the view that was created based on the older schema remains using the older schema, and when I try running it, it will give me error.
I assume that's because the view is still using the old execution plan? Is there a way to force an automatic recompilation of execution plans for all views when there is a change to the underlying table?
Thanks!

Dear All,
we are using one view which is having around 30000 rows.
it is taking too much time to retrieve data. that's why i've decided to create an indexed view.
now i'm getting this error.
Cannot schema bind view 'view1' because name 'Table19' is invalid for schema binding. Names must be in two-part format and an object cannot reference itself.
what is the solution for this error?

I am still having problem with making View automatically updates itself when the underlying table schema changes. Running sp_recompile on the view table doesn't seem to work either, as I am still getting old format from the view (in Design mode the view returns the right info, but not when I open the View by doing Open View) even though the underlying schema has changed. Right now I find that I have to go into the View and change it a bit to force a recompilation.
And even if sp_recompile does, it would require that I manually do it each time I change a table. Any idea?

I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio. I have a view that I'd like to index. Obviously, that requires that the view be schema bound to the underlying table. I have found myriad explanations for how to programmatically create a schema bound view, but I've never created a view like that before, and since I'm more a mechanical engineer than a database manager, I'd like to be able to do it the 'easy' way, by just creating the view in Management Studio by going to the database, right clicking on 'Views', clicking on 'New View...' and then, hopefully, checking some box somewhere that schema binds the table to the view.

Is there any way to grant this privilage without granting alter on schema also?

Locally I develop in SQL server 2005 enterprise. Recently I recreated my db on the server of my hosting company (in sql server 2005 express).I basically recreated the tables and copied the data in it.I now receive the following error when I hit the DB:The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' requires a
database schema compatible with schema version '1'. However, the
current database schema is not compatible with this version. You may
need to either install a compatible schema with aspnet_regsql.exe
(available in the framework installation directory), or upgrade the
provider to a newer version.I heard something about running aspnet_regsql.exe, but I dont have that access to the DB. Also I dont know if this command does anything more than creating the membership tables and filling it with some default data...Any other solutions/thought on what this can be?Thanks!

Hello,
I would like to use SSIS tool to move the data from one database schema to another database schema.
For example:
Source table has
1. UserName (varchar 20) (no null)
2. Email (varchar 50) (can be null)
Destination table has
1. UserID (uniqueidentifier - GUID)
2. UserName (varchar 50) (no null)
3. EmailAddress (nvarchar 50) (can be null)
4. DateTime
Questions:
1. What controls do I use in my Data Flow to make data move between databases with different data types and include new value in UserID as a new GUID and DateTime as a date (GETDATE)?
OLE DB Source, OLE DB Destination, Data Converson and .....
How do I insert Guid and Date at the same time?
2. I have many tables to do data moving. Any sugestions? How do I architect my project? If I create many data flows for each table - it will look complicated.
Please give me some advices here.
Thanks.

Sometime ago, I had read a posting here about where in the system we can specify default owner of all objects in user database as being a DBO.
The topic came about, because somebody found out that if an object referred to in a query, does not have a fully qualified name, then it takes some time for SQL server to figure out what the owner of the object is; this causes performance problems.
e.g. select * from employees and select * from dbo.employees.
If anybody knows what that setting is...I will really appreciate it

The funny thing is i installed express with the 'new computerame' anyone have a clue that may help with this what file needs to be edited? Thanks inadvance for any help.

Is there anyway to change the ownership of a table.. I have developers who create tables and the tables are then shown to be owned by them.. These developers are in the db_owner database role.. The application will not run successfully unless the table is owned by the dbo..
The only way I see that I can handle this is to have them generate a script and have myself (full sa) run it..
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

I work in a development team of 5 people - when we create DTS packages they are owned by the individuals' user. This means that if a problem is discovered, only the original developer can change their package - which is a problem if they are busy / on holiday etc.
Is there a way to change each others packages without having System Admin priveleges (definitely not an option)
Similarly, how are people handling version control of packages - they is no way to put a package into Sourcesafe / something similar is there ?

I am having a problem with object ownership.
The person who setup the SQL Server setup the "dbo" account with his personal permissions. I need to change "dbo" so that the login name is the system account and not a personal account. Is this possible?
If this is not possible can I change the ownership of a system object?
I was able to change ownershipof user objects using the "sp_changeobjectowner" stored procedure, but it did not seem to work for system objects.
Any way around this?

One of my apps uses a login that is tied down to only use the sprocs and tables it is allowed to access. Its just given 'public' role. However, it needs to be able to add and delete fields from one table in particular. Is there a way to allow this? The login it uses has been given full rights to the table but an alter table command faults. The tbale must be a 'dbo' because other apps use it -- can I be granted DDL rights on a per table basis?
