Treating A Table Field As A Boolean Value In A Query...help!
Feb 29, 2008
I wanted to test how SQL server 2005 works with Boolean values.
so I created this table
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[BoolTest](
[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[Operand1] [bit] NULL,
[Operand2] [bit] NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_BoolTest] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[ID] ASC
)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]
) ON [PRIMARY]
I populated it like so
insert dbo.booltest (operand1, operand2) values (1,1)
insert dbo.booltest values (1,0)
insert dbo.booltest values (1,null)
insert dbo.booltest values (0,0)
insert dbo.booltest values (0,null)
Then I tried this
select case when operand1 OR operand2 then 'True' else 'False' End
from dbo.booltest where id=1
thinking that since row 1 has 1 and 1 I'll get 'True' as a string showing in the output window
but instead I got this error
Msg 4145, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near 'OR'.
question:
how do you work with bit value table Fields as booleans in a boolean test
many thanks in advance for your time/help

Greetings,
Being fairly new to SQL Server, I created a new field with the data type 'bit' so I can store the equivalent of a yes/no response (0 or 1).
When I try to enter either a 0 or 1 into the field via MS SQL Server Management Studio Express table view, I get
"String not recognized as valid Boolean"
I'd appreciate if someone would let me know how I 'noobed' this up.
Thanks very much.

I have a long query that returns a table like:
ID Name bool
1 Joe 0
2 James 0
3 John 1
When the boolean field is equal to 1 for any of the records I would like to return an empty record set. What is the best way to do this?
I know I could use IF EXISTS but my query is so long that I would prefer not to repeat the query multiple times. Is there an alternative?

When I enter a a true or false value into a boolean field, what is the proper way to enter it? I'm using:
INSERT INTO tblTable (IsSomething)
VALUES (False)
I've heard that a better way is to use 1 and 0, or something.

Hello,
I am facing a problem in a SELECT clause which i cannot solve.
In my SQL table ("myTable") i have a few columns ("Column1", "Column2", "TypeColumn"). When I select different columns of the table, instead of getting the value of TypeColumn, i would like to get a boolean indicating whether its value is a certain string or not.
For example, the TypeColumn accepts only a number of selected strings: "AAA", "BBB", "CCC".
when i do a select query on the table, instead of asking for TypeColumn i would like to ask a boolean value of 1 if TypeColumn is "AAA" and 0 if TypeColumn is "BBB" or "CCC". Also, i would like to make this query while I am also fetching the other columns. And i would like to use one query to get all that. I thought something like thsi would work:
SELECT Column1 AS Col1, Column2 AS Col2, IF(TypeColumn = "AAA", 1, 0) AS Col3
FROM myTable
but this doesn't work in SQL 2005!
Is it possible to do something similar in SQL 2005 using one query only? i am trying to avoid multiple queries for this.
thanks a lot for your help!

I have a gridview connected to a sqldatasource, and it works pretty good. It gives me the subsets of the information that I need. But, I really want to let them choose all the companies and/or any status. What's the best way to get all the values in the gridview...besides removing the filters :)
I thought the company would be easy, I'd just set the selected value to blank "", and then it'd get them all....but that's not working. And, for the boolean, I have no idea to get the value without having a separate query.
(tabs_done=@tabsdone) and (company like '%' + @company + '%')1 <asp:DropDownList ID="drpdwnProcessingStatus" runat="server">

I'm still trying to transition from a DB-centric view to an OO view,
and I could use some help from any of you OO-design wizards out there. A very common db representation is Table A, Table B, and Table A_B, which maps the two in a one-to-many relation. E.g., create table Companies ( companyId int, name varchar ); create table Products ( productId int, name varchar ); create table Companies_Products ( companyId int, productId int ); So how does this translate into object-land? I started with: public class Product public id as integer public name as string end class public clas Company public id as integer public name as string public products as generic.list(of Product) end class OK,
so far, so good -- I've represented most of my data. But I've lost some
important information: given a Product object, I have no easy way to
find out which company sells it. SQL: scan the Companies_Products table OO: iterate through companies, nested iteration through company.products. Do I just add a function to my data access layer that does the lookup? Is that allowed? On
a side note: can anyone recommend a good intro to OO design
specifically for database programmers? It seems like most of my
confusion comes from issues of translating tables into classes. Thanks!

I have the following query in sql 2005:
PROCEDURE [dbo].[uspInsert_Blob] (
@fName varchar(60),
@fType char(5),
@fID numeric(18, 0),
@bID char(3),
@fPath nvarchar(60)
)
as
DECLARE @QUERY VARCHAR(2000)
SET @QUERY = "INSERT INTO tblDocTable(FileName, FileType, ImportExportID, BuildingID, Document)
SELECT '"+@fName+"' AS FileName, '"+@fType+"' AS FileType, " + cast(@fID as nvarchar(18)) + " as ImportExportID, '"+@bID+"' AS BuildingID, * FROM OPENROWSET( BULK '" +@fPath+"' ,SINGLE_BLOB)
AS Document"
EXEC (@QUERY)
This puts some values including a pdf or .doc file into a table, tblDocTable.
Is it possible to change this so that I can get the values from a table rather than as parameters. The Query would be in the form of: insert into tblDocTable (a, b, c, d) select a,b,c,d from tblimportExport.
tblImportExport has the path for the document (DocPath) so I would subsitute that field, ie. DocPath, for the @fPath variable.
Otherwise I can see only doing a Fetch next from tblIportExport where I would put every field into a variable and then run this exec query on these. Thus looping thru every row in tblImportExport.
Any ideas how to do this?

I have a User Defined Function in my SQL Server 2000 database which takes a string and adds an integer quantity to it. The function basically takes the string (string because of first character and spaces) and adds an integer to it creating a new number (starting number and ending number concept). If I pass in a string that has a letter for the first character, it works fine. However, if the first character is an integer it trims out all 0s and whitespace and ruins the necessary formatting. Note, the formatting is always the same - x xxx xxxx xx. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.Example:D 499 8900 01 plus a Quantity of 10 returns D 499 89000 11 which is perfect.However,0 076 0000 03 plus a Quantity of 1 returns 764 764 (it should be 0 076 0000 04)------------------------------------CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[NEW_End_NR2]( @OldStr as char(20), @Quantity int )RETURNS @NewNR_Tbl TABLE (New_EndNr char(20) primary key)AS BEGIN DECLARE @NewStr char(20) DECLARE @addNr integerBEGIN Set @addNr = @Quantity set @NewStr = (select REPLACE(@OldStr,left(@OldStr, 1),'')) set @NewStr = (select REPLACE(@NewStr,' ', '')) + @addNr set @NewStr = (SELECT left(@OldStr, 1) + SPACE(1) + left(@NewStr,3) + SPACE(1) + left(REPLACE(@NewStr, left(@NewStr,3), ''), 4) + SPACE(1) + left(REPLACE(@NewStr, left(@NewStr,7), ''), 3)) BEGIN INSERT INTO @NewNR_Tbl (New_EndNr) VALUES(@NewStr) END END RETURNEND

I try to insert VB.NET boolean true values into a SQL2000 table thru a stored procedure. While varchar fields of the table are correctly filled, I'm surprised to find the bit fields all stay 0 after every single insert. This makes me wonder if VB.NET boolean variables can be passed to sp bit parameters and inserted into a SQL2000 table. Or did I miss something? Please advise. Thanks.

I have an application that reads a monitoring devices that produces 200 digital outputs every second and I would like to store them in a table. This table would get quite big fairly quickly as ultimately I would like to monitor over a hundred of these devices.
I would like to construct queries against each of the individual digital channels or combinations of them.
M first thought is to set up a table with 200 separate columns (plus others for date stamp, device ID etc) however, I am concerned that a table with 200 boolean (1-bit) fields would be an enormous waste of space if each field takes maybe one to four bytes on the hard disk to store a single bit. However, this would have the advantage of make the SQL queries more natural.
The other alternative is to create a single 200 bit field and use lots of ANDing and ORing to isolate bits to do my queries. This would make my SQL code less readable and may also cause nore hassle in the future if the inputs changed, but it would make the file size smaller.
In essence I am asking (hoping) the following : If I create a table with 200 boolean fields, does SQL server express automatically optimise the storage to make it more compact? This means that the server can mess around at the bit level and leave my higher level SQL code looking cleaner and more logical.

We have the following two tables :
Link ( GroupID int , MemberID int )
Member ( MemberID int , MemberName varchar(50), GroupID varchar(255) )
The Link table contains the records showing which Member is in which Group. One particular Member can be in
multiple Groups and also a particular Group may have multiple Members.
The Member table contains the Member's ID, Member's Name, and a Group ID field (that will contains comma-separated
Groups ID, showing in which Groups the particular Member is in).
We have the Link table ready, and the Member table' with first two fields is also ready. What we have to do now is to
fill the GroupID field of the Member table, from the Link Table.
For instance,
Read all the GroupID field from the Link table against a MemberID, make a comma-separated string of the GroupID,
then update the GroupID field of the corresponding Member in the Member table.
Please help me with a sql query or procedures that will do this job. I am using SQL SERVER 2000.

Hi,
I have one table (PermProportionalCosting) that contains employeecode, costcentre and proportionpercentage. An employee may have two or more records in this table, indicating that their salary has been split across multiple costcentres.
Another table (Employee) contains a default costcentre for each employee.
Another table (TransActualHistoricalMaster) contains the hours paid to each employee for each pay period.
My query so far selects all employees and the total hours worked from the TransMaster table, and then selects the costcentre and proportionpercentage from the PermProportionalCosting table. Multiple lines are created for all employees in the PermProportionalCosting table, with each line indicating the proportionpercentage and associated costcentre.
This is my query so far:
SELECT TransActualHistoricalMaster.EmployeeCode, Employee.PreferredName, Employee.LastName, CostCentre.Description, PermanentProportionalCosting.CostCentreCode,PermanentProportionalCosting.PercentageSplit,
TransActualHistoricalMaster.OrdHours
FROM TransActualHistoricalMaster
INNER JOIN Employee ON TransActualHistoricalMaster.EmployeeCode = Employee.EmployeeCode
INNER JOIN CostCentre ON Employee.CostCentreCode = CostCentre.CostCentreCode
FULL OUTER JOIN PermanentProportionalCosting ON TransActualHistoricalMaster.EmployeeCode = PermanentProportionalCosting.EmployeeCode
GROUP BY TransActualHistoricalMaster.EmployeeCode, Employee.PreferredName, Employee.LastName, CostCentre.Description, PermanentProportionalCosting.CostCentreCode, PermanentProportionalCosting.PercentageSplit, TransActualHistoricalMaster.OrdHours
This next bit is what I am unsure of.
I would like the CostCentre field from the Employee table to go into the PermanentProportionalCosting.CostCentreCode column where the employee doesn't have a record in the PermanentProportionalCosting table. In the above query, there is a null value for each employee that doesn't have a record in the PermanentProportionalCosting table, so I would like my query to replace the null value with the costcentre from the Employee table.
Any assistance would really be appreciated.
Thanks.

I have a concern about adding a new field to a table with image field - which is huge.
Will there be a problem with some databases, where they have a hard time locating data correctly after such a large field?
Previously this happened to me, and what was advised to put all the big fields at the end of the table.
Thanks.
