Tricky Database Restore Question

Apr 29, 2002

I need to restore a DB that was backed up prior to the installation of SP3 on this SQL Server.
To make a long story short, DB was backed up on SP1, I want to restore it to the same device that is now running SP3. Is that possible? Can anyone think of any issues or have some prior knowledge that may help me... Thanks!!!

Very Tricky Hierarchy For Dimesion From Relational Database

May 22, 2008

I need to create a dimension with a hierchy derived from 3 other dimenions where one of the dimensions contains a recursive hierarchy.

eg:

In my RDBMS I have; a table "Entities" which contextualises geographic locations and (typical columns include and id and a description with values for: ID1=United Kingdon, ID2=France, ID3=Norway, ID4=Finland, ID5=Europe, ID6=Scandinavia, etc.), another table "Entity_Type" which contextualises the values held in "Entities" (Typical olumns; ID1=Continent, ID2=Country) and a table, "Geo_Code" which codifies the values from both "Entities" and "Entity_type". They act more or less like 2 dimensions ("Entities", Entity_Type) and a fact table ("GEO_Code").

The third table has a recursive hierarchy in that it references it's own ID again in column "Entity Reference".

The first table is Entities, the second is Entity_Type and the third is the one that references both.

id
description

01
England

02
Norway

03
Europe

04
Scandinavia

id
description

01
Continent

02
Country

id
entity
Entity_Type
entity Reference

01
03
01
NULL

02
04
01
NULL

03
02
02
02

04
01
02
01
From the last table "GEO_CODE" we can determine the following:
01. Europe is a continent
02. Scandinavia is a continent
03. Norway is a Country that is in Scandinavia (Entity Reference recursive referencing ID 02 of the same table where the Entity is 04).
04. England is a Country that is Europe (Entity Reference recursive referencing ID 01 of the same table where the Entity is 03).

How do I create a new dimension using Visual Studio in Analysis Services where the Hierarchy is reflected?

So far, I have managed to depict 2 Hierarchies: where a dimenion depicts Entity (Countinent/Country) as level 1 and the value of the corresponding entity (Europe, ENgland, Norway, Scandinavia) in level 2 but how do I get to the last bit where the Entity Reference references the location of the Country or Continent???

RESTORE Database - Database In Use, Restore Fails

Nov 19, 1999

11/19

Trying to keep out sysadmins & sa during/between database RESTORE

Configuration:
WINNT Server Enterprise 4.0 w/SP5
SQL Server 7 Enterprise & SP1

2 SQL Servers:
Production Server
Standby server

I Backup (full backup) databases to disk on primary server (logical backup devices are physicaly located on a Standby server (dedicated gigabit NIC in each server for this process). Transaction logs are applied to the Standby server throughout the day.

Problem:
How to keep out "sa" and sysadmins from a database while I'm restoring (or between restores) to a standby server?
The database being restored cannot be in use during a restore.
If a DBA forgets that this process is happening, the statement fails (RESTORE)for the database they happen to be in at the time of the restore.

Example restore statement:
Standby Server -
RESTORE DATABASE databasename FROM database_dd WITH DBO_ONLY, REPLACE, STANDBY = 'g:Mssql7FromPrimaryDatabaseName_undo.ldf'

I could restrict Domain sysadmin access and change sa password. I could also put the database in "Single user" mode, however this could become problem if my process disconnects and then someone else connects - then my process is locked out. What I'm really looking for is to lock out all activity for a database that is in "standby mode" except for RESTORE processes.

Any ideas??

Restore Of Database Backup To Another Database Makes Users DBO

May 7, 1999

Anybody figure a way around this:

In a development server you take a backup and you want to move the entire database to a production server. The production server does not contain the database, users, or logins in master.

When you restore the backup to production in 7.0, the users get moved to DBO because the logins do not exist and then you cannot delete them.

We are having to drop the users from the database on development, back up the database and restore it to production, then recreate the users on production.

This is bogus and did not happen in 6.5 because of the aliases.

Anybody come up with a better way?

How To Backup CE Database Tables And Restore To Newer Database?

Jul 3, 2007

I am fairly new to VS 2005 and SQL Server CE. I have developed a Desktop Windows application using VB 2005 and the SQL Compact Edition Database. This application will sell to users via web download.

When they download a service patch, or updated version, I wish for them to retain the data in their present database. In other words, fill the new database with the old data. The new table structures will remain intact except for added columns at the end.

Question is how to save the old data and update the new database with it. Is there an easy way to do this, or do I need to write a module to save a database copy, and update the new database with content at install time?

SQL 2012 :: Restore Master Database For A New Database?

Jul 29, 2014

Sometime during the night last night some user account permissions were "lost". Am I right to think that restoring the master database would be the way to go? We have a 2 node 2012 cluster and I stop the cluster resource and start the db in single user mode from the active node. Somehow the sharepoint farm is still trying to connect so I can't get logged in single user. What method could I use to stop users from connecting when I don't have access to the sharepoint farm.

Is It Possible To Restore A Database But Preserve The Security Of The Database?

Apr 26, 2007

i have a development database that has updates and changes to a production database. rather than go through individually and alter all relevant tables and stored procedures, id like to back up the database on the development side and restore it on the production side as the production database. is there a way to restore the database on the production server but preserve all the security settings (ie logins and such)? i noticed on our development server, that if i try to restore the database with my development database, it overwrites the users and/or if the user is the same on both, it removes the login name for that user.

Possible To Restore Database From Raw MDF And LDF Files Of Old To New Database Instance

Aug 19, 2015

I have a client that has POS software called Restaurant Pro Express (RPE) from [URL] ...

Their old POS computer had a hardware failure, but I was able to attach the hard-drive to another computer and recover the data. RPE uses a MSSQL database system. However, my client doesn't seem to make backups very often

- the last one is dated January 5, 2015. I was able to copy the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server folder over which contained the instance as well as all the data files - and has up-to-date information. The instance in the recovered Microsoft SQL Server folder was called MSSQL.1. I installed the RPE software on their new computer, and it too now has an instance called MSSQL10_50.PCAMERICA. The new computer is using MSSQL 2008 R2, while I believe the old computer would have been using MSSQL 2005.

I am no DBA expert, especially when it comes to MSSQL. Is is possible to 'restore' the database from the 'raw' .mdf and .ldf files of the old computer to the new computer / database instance? If so, how should I proceed?

Get lowest result same on all players.

Help With Tricky T-SQL

Hello allI've got this tricky situation that I would like to solve in SQL, butdon't know how to do. Here's A Tricky One

Jan 28, 2008

I have an integer in the database that was saved in reverse byte order (BigEndian). Due to some backward compatibility issues (long story) I can't just convert the number to the normal format and save it that way in the database.
Instead, when I read the number in my program, I just reverse its bytes and display the proper value, and translate the number back when it has to be saved back to the database.

Now, the problem is that there are some views that pull this numbers directly from the database and display it.

My question is: can this number be converted from BigEndian to LittleEndian similarly to how I do in my program using T-SQL?

Thanks.

Need To Do Some Tricky SQL Sorting

Dec 13, 2007

This is more of a SQL question than a .NET question, but if you could indulge me, I'd appreciate it.
I have a table that has 2 columns of particular interest for the purposes of this question.  One is a foreign key to another table (int), the other is a name (varchar(50).  I want to sort the results set in a specific way.  I want to sort it in such a way that all entries that have the foreign key = 0 come first (sorted ASC by name) then I'd like all the other results with foreign key column > 0 to be sorted ASC by name.  I was trying to be cute and tried an order by statement like this:  "ORDER BY (foreignKey > 0), name" but it's a syntax error (as I initially thought it might be).  I know I could probably do a stored procedure that will create a temporary table and I could insert a new column to help put these in order, and I also know I could put all the results into an array, then sort the array in code, but I was just wondering if there was a simpler, slicker way (tricky SQL query perhaps).

Tricky SQL Statement (for Me)

Oct 6, 2004

I have a stored procedure called TC3_GetAllJobOrders which takes 8 parameters as filter values and dynamically builds a statement to filter the data. If you pass in null values for the filters, then the data is not filtered.

I want to write another SP called TC3_GetNewestJobOrders which takes 9 parameters. The first 8 parameters are the same as TC3_GetAllJobOrders and the 9th parameter is numRecs which defines the number of records to return. The procedure should call TC3_GetAllJobOrders, sort the data by date and then return the top numRecs. However, I can't figure out the best way to write this stored procedure because it references another one.

I am trying to stay away from dynamic SQL if at all possible. But I am thinking I will have to use dynamic SQL because I don't think the number of records to be returned (as defined using the TOP keyword) can be parameterized. However, I was trying to write a dynamic SQL statement so that the end statement looked something like:

SELECT TOP 10 * FROM ( EXECUTE TC3_GetAllJobOrders ... ) ORDER BY createdOn DESC

However, I guess having the EXECUTE in parens like that is no good and SQL Server doesn't like it. What is the best/correct way to do it?

Tricky Delete

I have 2 tables which are related to each other, each having a Foreign Keys of the other table . When I delete company table, it gives me an error that I'm violating a FK constraint of the table owner. When I try to delete employee, it gives the same error.

CREATE TABLE OWNER {
employee_id PK
company_id - this is a FK of COMPANY
}

CREATE TABLE COMPANY{
company_id PK
owner_id - this is a FK of OWNER
}

Must I drop the constraints before I can delete? I don't want to do that because I don't want so many other tables are dependent on those tables.

3Drink$40.00

One of the reports the user needs to see looks like this:

ProductNumber of MachinesTotal Sales
Magazine/Drink2$120.00
Drink2$70.00
Magazine1$30.00
Food/Drink1$70.00

To clarify:

There are two magazine/drink machines (ID 1 and 3)
There are two drink only machines (ID 2 and 6)
There is one magazine only machine (ID 4)
There is one food and drink machine (ID 5)

How do I do this query?

Ideally, I wouldn't limit the number of products in a given machine, but I can do so if necessary.

I'm using SQL Server 2000 so I can't use the newer PIVOT/UNPIVOT functions in SQL Server 2005.

Here is some setup T-SQL code:

CREATE TABLE SalesData

)

INSERT INTO SalesData (MachineID, ProductName, Sales) VALUES (1, 'Magazine', 20)
INSERT INTO SalesData (MachineID, ProductName, Sales) VALUES (1, 'Drink', 30)
INSERT INTO SalesData (MachineID, ProductName, Sales) VALUES (2, 'Drink', 30)
INSERT INTO SalesData (MachineID, ProductName, Sales) VALUES (3, 'Magazine', 30)
INSERT INTO SalesData (MachineID, ProductName, Sales) VALUES (3, 'Drink', 40)

INSERT INTO SalesData (MachineID, ProductName, Sales) VALUES (5, 'Drink', 30)
INSERT INTO SalesData (MachineID, ProductName, Sales) VALUES (6, 'Drink', 40)

Of course, this is a much simplified version of the real business problem I'm facing. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tricky Select With An AVG

May 22, 2008

I don't even know if this is possible, but I need to find a way to do the following:

I have a select statement that returns the the Top (x) scores from a table called Rounds. The number of rows (x) will vary based on another calculation that I have, in this example I used 3.

SELECT TOP (3) Scores
FROM Rounds AS Rounds_1
WHERE (UserID = 'testuser')

I need to take the 3 values from this example, and calculate the AVERAGE. How do I do that?

Thank you.
