Trigger Occasionally Fails

Feb 6, 2004

I created a trigger to update another table when a record is inserted. This trigger appears to work about 99% of the time, but occasionally it will fail. Here is the code for the trigger, does anyone see anyting wrong with this?

CREATE TRIGGER trgUpdateClaimCapture ON ResponseCapture
FOR INSERT
AS
BEGIN
UPDATE ClaimCapture
SET ResponseTime = GETDATE()
FROM Inserted I, ClaimCapture C
WHERE C.Site = I.Site
AND C.Batch = I.Batch
AND C.RxNumber = I.RxNumber
AND C.ServiceDate = I.ServiceDate
AND C.ResponseTime IS NULL
END

Any help is appreciated....thanks.

Why Does My SQL Server Go Very Slow Occasionally

May 2, 2007

Hi
I'm using SQL Server 2000 with Small Business System 2003. I have a smallish database and an Access 2003 Front End, with ODBC links. The system has been running fine for about 2 months with 16 users. This weekend, I will be adding a further 30 users to the system.

I've been doing some work on a new copy of the front end over the past day or two, and found that occassionaly, the system runs really slowly, taking a couple of minutes to open my front screen which normally takes a few seconds.

The only solution I have found is to stop and start SQL Server Manager on the server, and then everything is fine. However this is clearly not an acceptable solution, because I'm doing it about twice a day.

can anybody suggest why this might be, or how I might fix the problem?

I have a maintenance plan in place, which runs overnight,

Thanks for any help,

Colin

EncryptByKey DecryptByKey Occasionally Returns Null

Jan 21, 2008

The DecryptByKey function occasionally returns null even though the EncryptByKey function retuned a non-null value. The problem only occurs for a subset of rows returned by a single select and every time the script is executed, a different set of rows is affected by the problem. Occasionally all fields get encrypted/decrypted successfully, but this is rare.

It seems that the EncryptByKey function occasionally returns a value that can not be decrypted at a later point in time.

I am running on Windows XP Professional SP 2 with SQL Server 9.0.3042.

I have included a sample of the code below.

Thank you,
Mike

Help With INSERT TRIGGER - Fails With Error.

Continue Transaction If Trigger Fails

Nov 6, 2007

Hi guys,

I have some triggers that insert data in a table located in a remote server. If the remote server happens to be down I want to continue with the original transaction anyway. Can I use a BENGIN TRY BEGIN CATCH block to continue with the transaction in the trigger and also insert the data into a temporal local table if the remote insert fails?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: SSMS Occasionally Freezing / Hanging

Jul 7, 2015

I have a weird intermittent issue with an enterprise version of SS2014. When clicking or right clicking around SSMS will lock up and display the 'SSMS is busy - waiting for an internal operation to complete'. It is only specific to the server as when I connect using my local SSMS this doesn't happen. This was happening both pre and post SP1 install.

SQL 2012 :: Restoring Mirrored Database To Different Server Occasionally Fail?

Oct 19, 2015

Every once in a while a scheduled restore of a production database backup to a development server will fail with the following error.

RESTORE cannot operate on database 'XXX' because it is configured for database mirroring or has joined an availability group

While it is true the production database is involved in database mirroring, the development server does not have database mirroring enabled. This error tells me something within the backup is telling the development server the database is configured for database mirroring.

However the perplexing part for me is that we only receive this error maybe 5% of the time, if that, and only on a couple of our databases. We have numerous other restores of mirrored production databases to development servers that have never produced this error. So my question is what is causing this error to occur, and why is it not happening all of the time? We get around this error by deleting the DEV database and re-running the restore job.

Securing Local System, Password Expiration, Occasionally Connected MSDE

Jul 14, 2005

Numerous articles (e.g., http://www.microsoft.com/sql/techinfo/administration/2000/security/securingsqlserver.asp, even one that I wrote, http://www.dbazine.com/sql/sql-articles/cook12) state that to secure SQL Server, the SQL Server services should not run as Local System. That advice is useful only if making the change is not overly disruptive or is even allowable. My two most recent clients have absolutely rigid password expiration policies that require all account passwords to be changed at regular intervals. Realistically, that makes a compelling case for running as Local System.

Instead Of Trigger - Works In Mgment Console But Fails In Live Test

Feb 4, 2008

Hi, I wasn't sure if this was the correct place for this question since it involves both T-SQL and ODBC but i thought I would start here. A little system information to start. I'm using SQL 2005 on a Windows 2003 server. An application is connection to my database through ODBC and adds records to a table one at a time (no batches).

I have an Instead of Trigger created on a table that tests for the existence of a valid foriegn key. If the key doesn't exist in the related table I want to insert the record into a "bad records" table.

My trigger works perfectly when I add a bogus record to the table directly in the SQL Management Console table view or thorugh an insert query. However, when I try a live test with an application connected via ODBC that is adding records to the table the trigger fails to catch the errors and will not update the "bad records" table. If a record is legitmate (i.e. has a valid foreign key) then the final bit of trigger code fires without a problem.

Does anyone know of a problem with Instead Of Triggers working on multiple tables when connection through ODBC? It just seems weird that the trigger works perfectly in one situation but then doesn't work in another.

Thanks and advance for any help you can give.

Standard Edition Fails To Install, Express Edition Fails To Uninstall

May 8, 2008

We are trying to install the Standard Edition of SQL Server 2005. We already have SQL Express installed. Standard won't install and Express won't uninstall.

We have tried every suggestion we can find and some we made up. When we try to install Standard, we get to the bit where you choose what you want to install and the only thing available is workstation components.

There are so many cases of this on the Internat that I can't believe MS have not solved the issue. And I am stunned that they want to charge us more money to talk to us about how to fix something we just paid them an arm and a leg for!

What do I need to tell you to get some idea of where to go next with this?

CLR-Based Trigger? Recursive Trigger? Common Table Expression?

Nov 14, 2006

Hey,

I'm new to this whole SQL Server 2005 thing as well as database design and I've read up on various ways I can integrate business constraints into my database. I'm not sure which way applies to me, but I could use a helping hand in the right direction.

A quick explanation of the various tables I'm dealing with:
WBS - the Work Breakdown Structure, for example: A - Widget 1, AA - Widget 1 Subsystem 1, and etc.
Impacts - the Risk or Opportunity impacts for the weights of a part/assembly. (See Assemblies have Impacts below)
Allocations - the review of the product in question, say Widget 1, in terms of various weight totals, including all parts. Example - September allocation, Initial Demo allocation, etc. Mostly used for weight history and trending
Parts - There are hundreds of Parts which will eventually lead to thousands. Each part has a WBS element. [Seems redundant, but parts are managed in-house, and WBS elements are cross-company and issued by the Government]
Parts have Allocations - For weight history and trending (see Allocations). Example, Nut 17 can have a September 1st allocation, a September 5th allocation, etc.
Assemblies - Parts are assemblies by themselves and can belong to multiple assemblies. Now, there can be multiple parts on a product, say, an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), and so those parts can belong to a higher "assembly" [For example, there can be 3 Nut 17's (lower assembly) on Widget 1 Subsystem 2 (higher assembly) and 4 more on Widget 1 Subsystem 5, etc.]. What I'm concerned about is ensuring that the weight roll-ups are accurate for all of the assemblies.
Assemblies have Impacts - There is a risk and opportunity impact setup modeled into this design to allow for a risk or opportunity to be marked on a per-assembly level. That's all this table represents.

A part is allocated a weight and then assigned to an assembly. The Assemblies table holds this hierarchical information - the lower assembly and the higher one, both of which are Parts entries in the [Parts have Allocations] table.

Therefore, to ensure proper weight roll ups in the [Parts have Allocations] table on a per part-basis, I would like to check for any inserts, updates, deletes on both the [Parts have Allocations] table as well as the [Assemblies] table and then re-calculate the weight roll up for every assembly. Now, I'm not sure if this is a huge performance hog, but I do need to keep all the information as up-to-date and as accurate as possible. As such, I'm not sure which method is even correct, although it seems an AFTER DML trigger is in order (from what I've gathered thus far). Keep in mind, this trigger needs to go through and check every WBS or Part and then go through and check all of it's associated assemblies and then ensure the weights are correct by re-summing the weights listed.

If you need the design or create script (table layout), please let me know.

Thanks.

I hope this code is found useful.

I want to be able to create a trigger so that when a row is inserted into table A by a specific user then the ID will appear in table B. Is it possible to find out the login id of the user inserting a row?

I believe the trigger should look something like this:

create trigger test_trigger

for insert
as
insert into b(ID)

select i.id
from inserted i
where

Modifing The Row That Invokes A Trigger From Within That Trigger

Jul 23, 2005

When a row gets modified and it invokes a trigger, we would like to beable to update the row that was modified inside the trigger. This is(basically) how we are doing it now:CREATE TRIGGER trTBL ON TBLFOR UPDATE, INSERT, DELETEasupdate TBLset fld = 'value'from inserted, TBLwhere inserted.id= TBL.id....This work fine but it seems like it could be optimized. Clearly we arehaving to scan the entire table again to update the row. But shouldn'tthe trigger already know which row invoked it. Do we have to scan thetable again for this row or is their some syntax that allows us toupdate the row that invoked the trigger. If not, why. It seems likethis would be a fairly common task. Thanks.

Update Trigger Behaviour W/o A Trigger.

May 30, 2008

Hi,
I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question.
I run an update statement like "Update mytable set status='S' " on the SQL 2005 management Studio.
When I run "select * from mytable" for a few seconds all status = "S". After a few seconds all status turn to "H".
This is a behaviour when you have an update trigger for the table. But I don't see any triggers under this table.
What else would cause the database automatically change my update?
Could there be any other place I should look for an update trigger on this table?
Thanks,

Drop Trigger With A Variable Trigger Name

Hi all in .net I've created an application that allows creation of triggers, i also want to allow the deletion of triggers.
The trigger name is kept in a table, and apon deleting the record i want to use the field name to delete the trigger

I have the following Trigger

the error is at

DROP TRIGGER @DeleteTrigger

I'm guessing it dosen't like the trigger name being a variable instead of a static name
how do i get around this?

Trigger Doesn't Log Into The Audit Table If The Column Of Table Has Trigger On Is Null

Jan 23, 2008

Hi,

I have a trigger set on TABLE1 so that any update to this column should set off trigger to write to the AUDIT log table, it works fine otherwise but not the very first time when table1 has null in the column. if i comment out

and i.req_fname <> d.req_fname from the where clause then it works fine the first time too. Seems like null value of the column is messing things up

Any thoughts?

Here is my t-sql

Insert into dbo.AUDIT (audit_req, audit_new_value, audit_field, audit_user)

select i.req_guid, i.req_fname, 'req_fname', IsNull(i.req_last_update_user,@default_user) as username from inserted i, deleted d

where i.req_guid = d.req_guid

and i.req_fname <> d.req_fname

Thanks,
leo

DTS Fails

Apr 15, 2004

Good Morning,

I've been running into a small problem. There are two people that usually create local packages to be executed by the DTS. Either my boss or I. The problem that I have been running into is, there are some local packages that will not execute when I try to run them. These packages are that my boss has created. When she runs them they work fine. But when I run them they just don't run. The only way I can run the local package is if I log in into the server and run it from there.

The error that I keep getting is:

Unspecified Error
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data Source Name not found and no default driver specified.

What would I be able to do so that I can execute this local package from my computer?

Job Fails

Apr 24, 2007

Hey guys,

I'm trying to run a job that will convert a load of data but it keeps failing at the first step. If I run the scripts in each step on their own then they run fine. The error message I get is 'The process did not produce any output. Process exit code 1. The step failed'. I think this may be some kind of security problem but I cannot see where. The command I'm using for the first step is as follows:

OSQL -SCRLONSQL01 -DINPRO -Usysadm -Pcarpmaels -i"C:Program FilesCPA Inpro DatabaseScriptsdropinteg.sql" -o"C:conversionoutputdropinteg.txt" -n

Any pointers would be most helpful.

Job Fails

Nov 6, 2007

Hi,
I am trying to create a job to run a ssis package.
The job fails. Looking at the history log, there is no proper information on why the job failed. It just says: The job failed. The job was invoked by user ...

please note that the ssis package runs fine on it's own i.e. in the designer by pressing the run button.
Thanks

SQL Connection Fails

Apr 13, 2004

Hello,

I'm trying to get a handel on ASP.NET and I've put together a new SQL connection to display a view inside of a datagrid.

When I go to run it (before or after compile) I get the error:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Line 57: Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

Line 59: SqlDataAdapter1.Fill(ds)

Here is the connection string I am using:

Me.SqlConnection1.ConnectionString = "workstation id=MyWorkstation;packet size=4096;integrated security=SSPI;data source=MyServer;" & _
"persist security info=False;initial catalog=Northwind"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I've created a new login to the SQL server using the ASPNET user id (as well as several others for testing), set up the premissions for each UID and I'm still getting this error.

I have also tried to setup the user info in the connection string by doing the following:

Me.SqlConnection1.ConnectionString = "user id=aspnet;password=;workstation id=MyWorkstation;packet size=4096;integrated security=SSPI;data source=MyServer;" & _
"persist security info=False;initial catalog=Northwind"

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dale
