Trigger & Record Number
Oct 16, 2007
Hello,
I have a table with a field that contains the record number. This field is an identity column that is needed to be compatible with old Clipper programs. I've to ensure continuity in the numbering. So I have to update those numbers each time one or several records are deleted. I was thinking of using a trigger but I'm quite novice in this domain and don't know how to do it. Does anyone have a solution for this problem ?
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
mathmax

This is part of my trigger on table T1. I am trying to check if the records inserted to T1 is available in myDB.dbo.myTable or not (destination table). If it is available rollback T1. It does not do that although I insert the same records twice.
-- duplicate record check
SET @step = 'Duplicate record'
IF EXISTS (
SELECT i.myID, i.Type
FROM INSERTED i INNER JOIN
myDB.dbo.myTable c ON i.myID = c.myID
GROUP BY i.myID, i.Type
HAVING (COUNT(*) > 1) AND (i.Type = 'In')
)
BEGIN
ROLLBACK transaction
RAISERROR('Error: step: %s. rollback is done.', 16, 1, @step)
Return
END
What is problem?

Hello All,I have 2 tables in a MS SQL DB. Table1 and Table2.LogTable2.Log was a copy of Table1 + an extra column for date_deleted. Ihave 2 Triggers on Table1, Insert and delete. So when a record isinserted into Table1 it's copied onto Table2.log, and when deleted inTable1 the same record in Table2.log is time stamped with time ofdeletion.I would like to have another Trigger on Table1 for update. So if acertain field (not primary key) is updated for a record it is alsoupdated in Table2.log This way Table2.log will always have exactly thesame fields per record as Table1.I'm not sure how to reference the modified records only and updatejust the modified fields...something like...?----------------------------CREATE TRIGGER [tr_updateT_Log] ON [dbo].Table1FOR UPDATEASUpdate Table2.LogSET description = , office =-------------------------------------------------Any help would be greatly appreciatedThanksY

Hello.
In SSIS, is it possible to add a record number to each row of data as I copy it from the source to the destination.
An example of my source data is below, For each MemberID want to record the number of times it occurs in the table.
MemberID
2898
2899
2899
What I want it to look like when it gets to the destination is:
MemberID RecordNumber
2898 1
2899 1
2899 2
Like an Identity column I suppose, not for the whole table but for each MemberID.
Thanks

I've a system of users and let's call em subusers. Every User becomes an automatic generated login when entered into the database. Every subuser has a reference to his user and no login, cause only thr root in the chain is able to login. But when the user gets deleted, all subusers become a new user. I've done this with a trigger changing the superUser Value=0:
create trigger abc on Users AFTER DELETE
as
declare @h int
SELECT @h = id FOM inserted
UPDATE Users SET superUser=0 WHERE superUser=@h
Furthermore the trigger deletes all additionally data of the user.
Since every subuser of the deleted user becomes a user himself for every subuser a new Login must be created. I'm using an update triger for this task:
1: create trigger userUpdate on Users After Update
2: AS
3: DECLARE @superold int
4: @supernew int
5: @name nvarchar(55)
6: @date smalldatetime
7: if UPDATE(superUser)
8: begin
9: SELECT @superold= superUser FROM deleted
10: SELECT @supernew=superUser FROM inserted
11:
12: if @superold <> @supernew
13: begin
14: if @superold = 0
15: begin
16: DELETE FROM UserLogin WHERE id=@superold
17: end
18: else if @supernew=0
19: begin
20: SELECT @name=Name,@date=Date from inserted
21: execute createLogin @supernew,@name,@date
21: end
22: end
23: end
The problem is in line 20 and 21, cause the values @name and @date containing only the last updated user(the last entry in the inserted table) thus only for the last user a new Login is created whereas the others become the state user but no login was created. What i need is a method to loop over all entrys in the tables inserted btw. deleted.
Does anybody know how to achieve this, looping the tables and executing a stored procedure for every entry?
bye

I€™m working on a database project that will ultimately contain millions of records for each lot. In addition, each lot will have up to 96 corresponding serial number records.
I would like to add a SQL parameter that would tell the database engine to only return X number of records.
For Example:
If table TBL_LOTS contains one million records I would like to limit the return set to 100 for example.
What would I need to add to the SQL command to below to restrict the data set to the first 100 records in the set of one million?
SELECT [LOT NUMBER]
FROM TBL_LOTS
WHERE [STATMENTS]

can someone pls show me a way to get an unique sequence at below senario:
PC1 & PC2 using their own local client progam to access to Database Server at SERVER1.
In the SERVER1, there is a table SEQUENCE in a database DATABASE1.
And the table's structure of SEQUENCE are SeqType & SeqNo.
Here is the sample data:
SeqType SeqNo
Invoice 100
DeliveryOrder 200
Now, how to prevent PC1 & PC2 to get a same Invoice No. if they request the Invoice No. at the same time?
Is it possible to lock the record Invoice when i perform a SELECT statement, then i update the Invoice to 101, lastly release the lock for Invoice?
pls advise. thanks.

I am wanting to set up a trigger on our SQL server 2000 to create a sequential order line number in the OrderDetails table for OrderID.
I will be inserting data from an OrderLinesAdd table into the OrderLines table but want the LineNumber field to be incremented by 1 for each group of orders grouped by OrderID that I insert into the table eg.
OrderID LineNumber
1 - 1
1 - 2
1 - 3
2 - 1
2 - 2
3 - 1
3 - 2
I have just started using SQL so am not sure how I go about writing the code for the trigger ? It would seem like I will need to use the Max function in the code.
Thanking you in advance.

I need to add the row number or record number to the 'inserted' and 'deleted' tables in a trigger.
Among other things, I have tried-
SELECT 1 as rowId, i.* INTO #ins FROM inserted i
if @@ROWCOUNT > 1 --if multiple rows, set row number
begin
SELECT @pkWhere = coalesce(@pkWhere + ' and ', ' where ') + PKF.colName + ' <= i.' + PKF.colName FROM #primaryKeyFields PKF
set @strSQL = 'update #ins set rowId = (Select Count(*) From #ins i' + @pkWhere + ')'
exec (@strSql)
end
-the above sets rowId for every record to the total instead of sequential. Keep in mind that this code is used to create a trigger for any table, hence I cannot specify any column names literally.
This SHOULD be simple... right?

Can anyone help me figure out how to set up a new table using SSIS with a record field that will generate a unique number? The record number is also the primary key in the table. I did this about a year ago with a bit of help, but once you get the language right and initiate the creation, the text for defining the table is no longer available. I have seen a lot of references for MySQL and MS SQL 2000 and an AUTO_Generate or a UNIQUE ID. None of this works within MS SQL 2005 in SSIS.
Thanks!

I am using the tables created by the aspnet_regsql.exe tool for security. Basically, I need to ensure that an account named Administrator is never deleted. I also have a role named administrator, and I need to make sure that Administrator is never removed from the administrator role. Can I create a trigger to ensure that the Administrator is never deleted and that the Administrator is never removed from the Administrator role? I know it will probably be two separate triggers: one on the aspnet_users table and one on the aspnet_usersinroles table. Thanks a lot for the help!

I have a table full of items that have a "date_updated" field. I'd like this field to be set to GETDATE() whenever a record is updated. I've got this trigger:
CREATE trigger tr_cp_shiptos_u on dbo.cp_shiptos for update as
update cp_shiptos set date_updated = GETDATE()
Problem is, of course, there's no WHERE clause..yet. I don't know how to refer to the record that was updated.... for example:
CREATE trigger tr_cp_shiptos_u on dbo.cp_shiptos for update as
update cp_shiptos set date_updated = GETDATE()
where shipto_id = @THIS_ID
I imagine there's some kind of builtin variable or something like that. How is this done?
Thanks in advance.

I am new to SQL and these forums, so please bear with me :)
My basic question is if I can create a update trigger that will pull info from another record in the same table if data in certain fields match the existing record.
An example:
The user creates a new record. If said user enters data in specified fields that matches data in the same fields in another record in the same table, can a update trigger be used to fill out the rest of this record with the data from the record that matches?
If you need more Info on my problem, ask and I will try to explain better. There may be a better way of doing this than using a trigger, but I am not sure. The fields that I would use to match the data would not be the primary key fields.
Thanks!

I'm hoping one of you will be able to help me because I haven't had very good luck finding any information on this.
I'm kind of new to SQL, but I'm learning as much as I can.
I created a web form that sends a new record to a SQL 2005 table I setup.
This all works exactly as it should, but I would like to have an email sent out every time a record is added to this table.
I have SQL Mail setup and I ran a test and it worked, but I can't seem to find any info on how to create a trigger that will send an email to me when a new record is added to the table.
My Database is called Engineering
The table is called ESSPartNumLog
And I have the following Columns that I would like to send in my email..
ESSSequence (PK,int, not null)
MaterialType (nvarchar(255, null)
ESSPrefix (nvarchar(255, null)
PartDescription (nvarchar(255, null)
Project (nvarchar(255, null)
PM (nvarchar(255, null)
Any ideas, or can you point me in the right direction?
