Trigger Work In VS Explorer - Not In Debug App - SQL Express 2005
May 6, 2008
OK I am really going nuts here. I have a trigger that will work if I insert a row using SQL MGMT Studio or VS DB explorer, but it will not insert using the tableadapter.update() command.
What is also strange is that I have to execute the query in the VS DB Explorer or SSMSE to get them to fill in the default values (trigger).
No matter what they don't work in the debug application:
Below is the trigger:
Code Snippet
ALTER TRIGGER [dbo].[weight_train_log_InsertTrigger]
ON [dbo].[weight_train_log]
AFTER INSERT
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON
UPDATE [weight_train_log]
SET [CreationDate] = GETDATE()
FROM inserted
WHERE inserted.[GUID] = [weight_train_log].[GUID]
END

Hi all,
I just realized recently that a database "XYZ" in the Object Explorer of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) is put in the Database Explorer of my VB 2005 Express for processing a Stored Procedure in executing the SELECT statements (not by using Input and/or Output Parameters) during the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express programming, then the content of the database "XYZ" is not in the SSMSE. How can I return the database "XYZ" from the DataBase Explorer of VB 2005 Express back to the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) safely? Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Does anyone know why a trigger does not show in SQL Express object explorer? It does exist. I can find it a couple of different ways (VIEW sys.triggers)... and it is working but if I cannot see it how can I modify it? Thank you.

Hello,I have a form in a web application. When I submit the form it inserts the record into the SQL Server 2005 database. I have an insert trigger. My question is how can i debug the trigger? the trigger then calls a CLR based stored procedure, again how can i debug this CLR stored procedure which gets called by the trigger. Thanks...kindly advice.

Hi all,
I couldn't debug SQL Server by "Step into Stored Procedure" on Server Explorer of VS2008 (or VS2005) to SQL 2005 Developer on remote Windows Server 2003 machine, it allway issue exception "Unable to start T-SQL Debugging. Could not attach to SQL Server process on 'Server'. Click Help for more information"
1) The environment:
The Client: Windows XP SP2 (WORKGROUP)
Visual Studio 2008 (or VS2005)
The SQL Server Machine: Windows 2003 Server Sp1 (DOMAIN)
SQL Server 2005 Developer
2) User account and Permission login:
I create the same user account for both Client and Domain Server with the same password, i also add that user to "Administrators" group in both machine.
At the SQL Server on Server machine, i added that account to ServerSecurityLogin with 'sysadmin' role already
3) Connection and authentication:
I used "Windows Authentication" for my connection to SQL server, and i checked sure my account of the connection by SQL command
SELECT SYSTEM_USER,
IS_SRVROLEMEMBER ('sysadmin')
4) Firewall:
I checked firewall like MSDN helping (i also tried to test by turn off firewall in both machine)
5) Visual Studio Remote Debugger:
I read "How to: Enable SQL Server 2005 Debugging" on MSDN with comment "The SQL Server can run on the same machine as the application or on a remote machine. If you are debugging T-SQL code only, then no remote setup is required."
so i didn't config Visual Studio Remote Debugger any thing.
Note: If i "Step Into Store Procedure" at Server locally, it works okey, so on at my PC client locally. But if i move debugging from my client to my Server, it occur error "Unable to start T-SQL Debugging. Could not attach to SQL Server process on 'Server'. Click Help for more information"???
If i execute store procedure on Server Explore, it works okey!
Please help me to find out what problem is???
Thanks,
Haiasc

I use Windows Vista Home Premium
Here's my Help About Info: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.3042.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.6000.16546
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.1433
Operating System 6.0.6000
I opened up the Surface Area Configuration Tool and chose the "Surface Area Configuration for Features". Choose "Database Mail" and clicked the checkbox "Enable Database Mail Stored Procedures"
When I go into the Management Studio, I can't see the "Database Mail" node under "Management"
I'm thinking I might need a service pack as in the about, I don't see a service pack listed. BUT, when I go to the SQL Server 2005 Express "Service Pack 2" page, there's no option to just download the Service Pack. I recently downloaded (2 weeks ago or so) this Sql Server Express Edition and I'm thinking this might have Service Pack 2 already, but I'm not sure as I don't see it in the "about".
What should I do?

This is what I have done.
1. Installed VB.NET IDE 2008 and SQL Server Compact 2005. IDE requires upgrade of database to 3.0 version which I allowed it to do. After the database was upgraded, I did an amount of coding work in the IDE and then tried to go back to do more database work in SQL. However the database then could not be opened in SQL Server Compact 2005. An error said that because it had been upgraded, it could not be read. It was requiring me to run 'upgrade.exe'. I had no idea what this meant and could find no upgrade available online.
2. Removed VB.NET IDE 2008 and installed 2005 instead. However, the file extension on the SQL Server Compact database is .sdf, but the IDE is requiring a .mdf extension. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to save or to have the desired extension, but I cannot.
Questions:
1. Do SQL Express 2005 and VB Studio Express 2008 work together?
2. If so, how?
It seems as though application each requires a different version of the database. If the database is usable in one, it is not usable in another.
Thanks for the help.

hi eveyrone,
I have an after insert trigger that works in sql2000 but not in sql2005. Can you please help me!!
CREATE trigger dbo.trUPS_tbl_I
on dbo.UPS_tbl
After Insert --For insert
as
declare @Tracking varchar(800),
@UPSID varchar(10),
@Cmmd varchar(800)
select @UPSID = cast(inserted.UPSID as varchar)
from inserted
commit
set @Cmmd = 'c:TasksUpdTrackingUpdateTrackingCS ' + @UPSID + ' ' + 'UPS1'
EXEC master.dbo.xp_cmdshell @Cmmd
The UpdateTrackingCS program will call a stored procedure to get the inserted data and update other databases. And the reason to put the commit statement in sql2000 is to have sql commit the transaction, so the store procedure in UpdateTrackingCS can query thtat inserted records.
When I use the same code in SQL2005, no matter what I do the UpdateTrackingCS program cannot query the data by the UPSID. It always says record not found.
I have tried to change commit to begin trans ... commit trans. But nothing works. Please help!
Thanks in advance.

I have installed 2 SQL Server 2005 Express sample databases from 2 books, ASPnet 2.0 and ADOnet 2.0. The ASPNETDB.MDF was shown in App_Data and Database Explorer, but not in the SQL Server Management Studio Express. The AdoStepBy Step database created by a ConfigDB.exe was displayed in the Management Studio, but not in the App_Data, or Database Explorer.
Is this the way SQL Server 2005 runs the 2005 databases for SQL Server 2005 Express only? Or also in SQL Server 2005?
TIA,
Jeffrey

My custom data component is an error handler that processes data and then calls
ComponentMetaData.FireError in ProcessInput() to send the error data to the event handler per row. Everything works fine during debug/release mode. However when I run it using "Start without Debug" no errors are thrown. My event handler still catches stock component errors, so something must be wrong in this custom component. Am I suppose to set a property or something?
Thanks!

I have traditionally thrown message boxes while developing SSIS packages and removing them when finished, but wish to move to something more appropriate. From my understanding, Debug.WriteLine is supposed to output to the console while debugging.
In various places I'm calling System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Stuff") but nothing comes up in the output console. Am I using this the wrong way?

Hi all,
In the VB 2005 Express, I can get the SqlConnection and ConnectionString of a Database "shcDB" in the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) by the following set of code:
///--CallshcSpAdoNetVB2005.vb--////
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Data.SqlTypes
Public Class Form1
Public Sub InsertNewFriend()
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=shcDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;"
Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
Try
connection.Open()
Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_insertNewRecord", connection)
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
.......................................
etc.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////
If the Database "shcDB" and the Stored Procedure "sp_inertNewRecord" are in the Database Explorer of VB 2005 Express, I plan to use "Data Source=local" in the following code statements to get the SqlConnection and ConnectionString:
.........................
........................
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=local;Initial Catalog=shcDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;"
Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
Try
connection.Open()
Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_insertNewRecord", connection)
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
........................
etc.
Is the "Data Source=local" statement right for this case? If not, what is the right code statement for my case?
Please help and advise.

Hello,
I'm trying to add a new connection in server explorer. The server will not appear
in the server drop down list, and when i manually type in the server and database name,
the connection fails saying
"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact
that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - could not open a connection
to SQL Server)"
I made sure the remote connections were on, and I am having no problems open
the sql connection in code.
Thanks in advance,

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I've got some applications which need .NET 3. And since theoretically .NET3 is using .NET2's runtime (CLR), I'm told that applications for .NET2 should work in .NET3 as well. But I would still like to ask to have a confirmation:
Can SQL 2005 Standard edition and Express work with .NET 3 or .NET 3.5? Has Microsoft tested this and can confirm this?

What I want to know is if I install SQL server 2005 express, is the backup will still work? I mean that the 2005 express wont upgrade sql 2000? What do I have to do to make it works?

We are new to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. We are going to develope a solution for one of our client and we have to decide on which database to use for the solution. Client wanted to have a low cost solution. Thus we were not in a position to push them for SQL Sever 2000.
In the process, we also thought of having MySQL as one of the option. Another option we have is to use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
We wanted to know if SQL Server 2005 Express Edition can be used with Visual Studion 2003 (Ver 1.1) or it can only be used with Visual Studio 2005 (Ver 2.0)?
Hope to get feedback soon.

Hey guys,
I have a problem regarding (if it’s the
right way to go about it) triggers in SQL Server 2005 Express. I have already finished
my application but wanted to add this in. My system is a shipping system which
allows users to add data about ships, orders etc. In order for a order to be “put
on a ship I have created a form which first allows users to select what order
and what ship and then creates a new entry on a table called OrdersonShip. What
I would like my code to do is first check that there is space on the ship (Each
ship has a maxCargo and a currentCargo) and then when the new entry on the
OrdersonShip table is produced I would like the numberofitems field on the
order to be associated with the ship to be added to the currentCargo on the
ship table. How would I go about this?
Many
thanks for any help you can give me.
