Trouble Getting RS To Work On Vista Business
Nov 7, 2007
I've just upgraded SQL 2005 Standard to Developer on Vista Business (actually had to uninstall whole SQL 2005 product in order for the upgrade process to work)
But it seems that RS didn't completely uninstall (the new install said it was still there).
I've reapplied SP2 and The DB Engine and SSAS seem to be fine - but unfortunately RS is now crippled.
I've re-attached the two RS databases - ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB
Everything looks OK in the RS Configuration Manager - the DB version is reported as C.0.8.54 in the Database Setup page, and all the options above are Green Ticked.
But when I try to browse to the ReportServer from IE (Started as Administrator) it gives "Server Application Unavailable"
The Application Error log says "A request mapped to aspnet_isapi.dll was made within an application pool running in Integrated .NET mode. Aspnet_isapi.dll can only be used when running in Classic .NET mode. Please either specify preCondition="ISAPImode" on the handler mapping to make it run only in application pools running in Classic .NET mode, or move the application to another application pool running in Classic .NET mode in order to use this handler mapping."
An earlier error from IE suggested running C:Windows>system32inetsrvAPPCMD.EXE migrate config "Default Web Site/ReportServer"
which was successful: "Successfully migrated section "system.web/httpHandlers"
Other than that I have changed nothing in the IIS setup from when RS was working fine.
When I try and connect to RS from SSMS it gives the error "
The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. (rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable) Get Online Help
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
"
I'm sufferring all this nightmare because I need semi-additive measures in SSAS for a customer demo I'm trying to prepare - which wasn't available in the Standard Edition.
I've already had to wipe Vista off my laptop once before - in order to completely uninstall RS - I'd rather not have to do it again if possible. (I've also tried going back to XP, but my nice fast new Dell Inspiron 1721 doesn't have any XP display drivers and Dell say they only support Vista on this machine!)
Any help on getting RS going on Vista - much appreciated!

Does anyone have a successful prescribed sequence for installing VS2005 and Business Intelligence Reports Projects on a Vista Business workstation to be used to create reports for a server?
I've looked through everything I can find here and I don't seem to see a clear solution without a lot of trial and error.
Fact is, I've not been successful getting just the reports to install on a plain XP box. Of course, the report creation looks fine on the server but I don't want to work directly on the server.
Thank you

Hi,
I have installed SQL Server 2005(Express edition) and Visual Basic 2005(Express edition) along with the SQL ServerBusiness Intelligence Development Studio and SQL Server Management Studio Express. However when I open
BIDS, VS2005 opens instead and there are only 2 templates for new
projects. I dont find the other templates for creating new projects
that should be present in BIDS . Could some one please tell me how to
get the other new project templates??
Cheers

We are still using SQL2k. I've installed the clients stuff for SQL. One thing I noted is that it was all but impossible to setup an ODBC connection because the driver does not appear in the list.
Every other driver shows up and works fine but not the SQL Server driver. A week or two ago I somehow found it and was able to create a system DSN. Now, I can't find the driver to save my life. I know it is there because my system DSN still works.
I've looked all over the internet and haven't found a thing except someone else having this same issue (and of course no replies). I've tried to install MDAC 2.8 and reapply SP4 with no results. I know Vista is new and all but SQL 2k still has a huge install base so I can't imagine this should not work much less not be supported. Microsoft's own website is of little use as well.
I have tried to create a DSN as my domain user, local admin and domain admin all with the same issue.

Hi y'all,
I just know that SQL Server Express Edition SP2 is being released by Microsoft recently, and from previous informations I gathered; it seemed that SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is not compatible with Windows Vista (any editions).
With the release of SP2, does this mean SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is now compatible with Windows Vista?
If so, do I have to install .NET Framework v2.0 first in my Windows Vista Business edition? BecauseI know that Vista Business edition already has .NET Framework v3.0 in it.
Thanks for your help! Appreciate it...

I have a client/server app with a connection string:
Provier=SQLNCLI;Server=ServerIP;Database=DBName;UID=Name;PWD=Password
This connection string works for Vista 64bit but not for Vista Business 32bit...
What have I done so far to the Vista Business 32bit...
1. Downloaded/Installed SQLNCLI from Microsoft Site
2. Tested the connection string several ways with no luck...
3. Was able to get Vista Business 32bit to connect via a File DSN with the same credentials... DSN route is not an option for this app...
Any ideas?

Actually I should have said #22 but this is beyond the point. It seems the errors pop up and then go away for no reason, then appear again.
I had Sql Server Express with Advanced Features set up all right as far as I can see. It is the connection issue that is causing the headache.
Currently when I try to make a connection with an Sql database I get an error in Visual Studio:
Generating user instance in Sql Server is disabled. Use sp_configure 'user instances enabled' to generate user instances.
So I go to Sql Server, log in, open a new query and type:
sp_configure 'user instances enabled'
GO
I get a table where I can see that
name minimum maximum config_value run_value
user instances enabled 0 1 1 1
Are they enabled? I think, yes. I go back to Vsisual Studio and get the same error. It is possible that I will have to log out in order for all this security garbage to take effect and I will try it but in the meantime, how can I set more than one instance.
I want to complain that these new security provisions that came apparently with SP2 and Vista are totally unnesessary for my applications. I do not have any high security info to worry about, e.g. social security numbers, etc. I would not mind to turn all this stuff off if it is possible at all.
So, how can I set up 3 user instances?
Thanks.

I read your blogs regularly on SQL-Server Express 2005 which I have been actively deploying with my software product for about a year now. I have migrated most of my products to SQL-Server from Microsoft Access. I have found SQL-Express very stable and have had no significant problems. My products are mainly accounting based such as payroll systems, hotel management systems, school academic results management systems.
My favourite front ends tools are Visual Basic 6.0, and Microsoft Access. Typically, with MS Access I link to tables via the SQL-Server ODBC driver and all the client front ends share a common security file, an access work group file. I have been using this approach for up to a decade with no problems.
Currently I am deploying a hotel management system and payroll system in a hotel about to be opened. Against our advice, they purchased computer systems running Windows Vista Business instead of XP which we are sure our software suites, the wireless network and other software solutions such as CCTV work perfectly. This has caused a lot of problems.
On my side I had the extra task of dealing with Office 2007.
2 key problems arose.
After setting up a simple Ethernet network connecting the Vista computers I could not connect to SQL-Server Express in Windows Authentication mode via SQL Native Client and SQL Server ODBC drivers from another computer on the network (i could only connect locally); I could only connect to it from another machine using SQL Authentication mode, which is not my preference.
Secondly, I could not share the security file with more than one client of the network. The file seems to be locked exclusively by one client that first grabs the file, hence you cannot log on to software. This defeats clientserver idea. HEEEEELP.
A way round this was to have at least one computer on the network running XP (or any windows not Vista) and share the security file from it. I wish to know the reason for this behaviour on Vista.
As to the first problem of not being able to connect of SQL-Server Express 2005 via Windows Authentication mode from another machine on the network, I found the cause: The PASSWORD PROTECTED SHARING setting on Sharing and Discovery option for networking on Windows Vista.
When this setting is turn ON you cannot connect to the SQL-Server engine. The error Login failed for user ": Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection is given. When I turn off this setting, I immediately could log on. I have validated this on several setups and this seems to the consistent. PLEASE SHARED THIS With others.
Thanks Dr Folami

Good day all, I wanted to get some feedback on what I think may be an issue between SQL Server 2005 Express and Vista. Specifically I use Vista Business edition and I was trying to execute the same bit of code on two different machines with the same exact database. The ONLY difference was Vista. See code below...what I doing in XP Professional SP2 was inserting an image into a table. This worked well on XP but the same code failed to actually insert the image. A row was created in 'myTable' but not binary data from the image insert. Can someone please advise or help me - it goes without saying that I an quite frustrated. ;-)
CREATE TABLE myTable(FileName nvarchar(60),
FileType nvarchar(60), Document varbinary(max))
GO
INSERT INTO myTable(FileName, FileType, Document)
SELECT 'titleist-dtsolo.jpg' AS FileName,
'.jpg' AS FileType,
* FROM OPENROWSET(BULK N'C:UsersBrian EvansDesktopgolfPremiumsgolfPremiumsProjectWebImages itleist-dtsolo.jpg', SINGLE_BLOB) AS Document
GO
Selecting from the results yields a row with no image data, and I did verify the path and image before and after running this sample.

Hello,
Firstly, can someone confirm that this can be done. Because I am starting to wonder.
I have downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express install, and attempted to install. Everything goes well. Computer scan indicates that everything is in place, but then when it goes to install the components it states that the following components failed:
- SQL Native Client
- SQL Server Database Services
- Reporting Services
- Workstation Components, Books Online
(Successful items were SQL Setup Support Files, SQL VSS Writer, OWC11, SQL Server Backward-Compatibility Files, SQL Server Management Studio Express).
For those Items that failed, I just get a message stating "Setup failed. Refer to Setup Log'. The setup log tells me little to nothing about why these components failed.
I am also getting the following message part way through install "An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.mis'". Does anyone know what this means? I downloaded the install from microsoft.com just a few days ago, so if this isn't "valid", then where do I get a valid one.
I'm totally stuck. Have spent almost a day trawling documentation etc. to find why these have not installed, but cannot find any indication of why they wont install.. everything that needs to be in place is. Hoping someone has had similar issues and can help.
Many Thanks in Advance.

Hi,
Is there any one knows how to fix this, please help! This is urgent.
In the configuration checking, there was only one warning message about operation system (this warning should be ignored according to some advice). When coming to the Component checkboxes, there is only one checkboxe checkable at the last item.
Thanks!

Hi all,
I'm a newbie to Reporting Services so please forgive my ignorance...
I've recently installed SQL Server Express 2005 with Reporting Services on my Vista Business Notebook (with no network connections) and have installed VS C# Express as well as the Business Intelligence Studio to create reports.
My C# application can connect to SQL Server fine, however, the reports I created with Business Studio refuses to deploy to the server due to the following reason:
"The permissions granted to user 'localhostJenny' are insufficient for
performing this operation".
I find this odd as I've been able to deploy reports on my other Windows XP machine (with SQL Server Express) no probs at all. Additionally, I cannot see the 'Site settings' link within Report Manager (Web) that I'd normally get with an admin account (i.e. on my Win. XP machine). Various sources indicate that my account has insufficient access rights to view this.
Having browsed through seemingly endless blogs and forums, I suspect that my local account has not been configured to access the Report Manager web client to publish, manage and administer the site.
I have tried the surface area tool for SQL Server, but I suspect that this is relevant only to SQL Server DB access and management. Adding an administrator here does nothing.
The question is, how can I grant access to myself (local account) to allow me to publish reports via business studio, and at the same time - administer Report Manager Site Settings - on my vista notebook??
I would be extremely grateful for any help on this matter - I've tried ceaseless reinstallations, but to no avail!
Many thanks in advance,
Jenny

I watched and followed the Intro to VB 2008 Express, but in the final part of the video, when you add a database, i did everything as the video says, still i get:
An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Unable to load DLL 'sqlceme35.dll': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)
Ive tried the fix stated in another forum, the one about changing the "Target CPU" but the option doesn appear, what does appear its the "Platfrom" dropdown list, but its fixed to "Any CPU" and dont have any more options.
Ive also downloaded Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 ENU and "re-installed" and selected repair, followed the steps, rebooted and still nothing.
The problem persists, any ideas, please?

Hello,
I have just tried to install (among other things) BIDS, and have found it hasn't worked. I tried it once over an old SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installation, and that failed, so I followed the advice of others and removed it. In fact I removed everything I could find to do with SQL Server 2005, and started right from the beginning (restarted after removing everything). My steps were:
1) Install SQL Express with Advanced Services (SQLEXPR_ADV.EXE, 240 MB, downloaded today from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/). Choose to install all components, with default options. Restart when complete.
2) Install SQL Express Tools (SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE, 218 MB, dowloaded today from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/). Choose only to install BIDS (one of four components).
When it was all over, I tried to fire up BIDS via the start menu (All Programs / Microsoft SQL Server 2005 / SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio), and got an error to say the shortcut to "devenv.exe" couldn't be found. Sure enough, it isn't where it should be - in fact it is not there at all.
As a note, I observed that when I went to install BIDS as per step 2 above, the installer made some claims about it already being installed, and that it would perform an upgrade...??
Something is not right here... By the way, I have installed BIDS on another machine some months ago, with no problems. Probably an older version at the time...
Hope someone can help.
Nick

Hi Everyone,
I'm having some trouble with the below trigger. When I add a row of data either manually or using an INSERT query, it just doesn't do anything. It doesn't provide any error messages either. This makes me think that it's aborting the operation because rowsAffected are 0 or some other simple error. My row manipulation code could be suspect also. This is my first time writing a trigger or using T-SQL for that matter.
What I'm trying to do is to have the trigger add +1 to the Iter field of all rows where BouleID is equal to the BouleID of the row being inserted. So let's say I have the following table:
BouleID CurrentLocation Iter
A01 Inventory 1
A01 Cutting 0
A01 WIP 2
B01 WIP 0
B02 WIP 1
B02 Inventory 0
Now, if I insert a row with BouleID = A01 and Current Location = Polishing, I want the Iter field of all previous rows to iterate by +1 and this new row to have Iter = 0.
I am using SQL Management Studio Express, and SQL Server Express.
Any thoughts on anything wrong with my selection code and iteration code? Could I adapt this to handle more than one row by using a GROUP BY BouleID somehow?
Code Block
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
-- =============================================
-- Description: <this trigger will iterate the Iter field by one for each rows that has the BouleID matching the one of
-- the row being inserted>
-- =============================================
CREATE TRIGGER dbo.trgCG_DispoIterate$InsertTrigger
ON dbo.dbCG_Disposition
AFTER INSERT AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @rowsAffected int,
@msg varchar(2000), --for error message
@BouleID varchar(6) -- and do I need to enter more than one?
SET @rowsAffected = @@rowcount
IF (@rowsAffected = 0 or @rowsAffected > 1 ) RETURN --don't continue if no rows changed or doing more than one at a time.
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON
SET ROWCOUNT 0
BEGIN TRY
--VALIDATION BLOCK Leave this alone for now
SELECT @BouleID = BouleID FROM Inserted --sets @bouleID equal to the BouleID of the row being inserted.
UPDATE dbo.dbCG_Disposition --This block sets the Iter field to it's previous value +1
SET Iter = ( Iter + 1 ) --
WHERE BouleID = @BouleID --
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
IF @@TRANCOUNT >0
ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
--or this will get rolled back
EXECUTE dbo.ErrorLog$Insert -- this function creates an errorlog table which gets filled up if there is an error in the try block.
DECLARE @ERROR_MESSAGE nvarchar(4000)
SET @ERROR_MESSAGE = ERROR_MESSAGE()
RAISERROR (@ERROR_MESSAGE, 16, 1)
END CATCH

Please help.
Has anyone seen a problem querying Excel or Access database when the "LIKE" clause is used with the "*" wildcard? The problem I'm seeing is that the query fails to return a dataset whenever "*" wildcard is used.
For Example,
sQry="Select * From [EmployeeData$] WHERE Id LIKE 'AAA'" 'query WORKS
sQry="Select * From [EmployeeData$] WHERE Id LIKE 'AAA*'" 'query does NOT WORK
Assume that Table name is "EmployeeData", with "ID", "Name" and "Birthdate" as Fields.
Data:
ID Name Birthdate
AAA
Aaron
5/4/1975
CCC
Charlie
10/14/1948
DDD
Deloris
7/19/1998
The code I use is listed as follows:
Imports System.Data.OleDb
Imports System.Data
Public Class Form1
Private m_sConn1 As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & _
"Data Source=C:ExcelData1.xls;" & _
"Extended Properties=""Excel 8.0;HDR=YES"""
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
'Use a DataSet to Query data from the EmployeeData table.
Dim QryConn As New OleDbConnection(m_sConn1)
'Dim strQry as string ="Select * From [EmployeeData$] WHERE Id LIKE 'AAA'" '- works
Dim strQry as string ="Select * From [EmployeeData$] WHERE Id LIKE 'AA*'" ' does not work
Dim da As New OleDbDataAdapter(strQry, QryConn)
Dim ds As DataSet = New DataSet
da.Fill(ds)
Dim dr As DataRow
For Each dr In ds.Tables(0).Rows 'Show results in output window
Debug.WriteLine(dr("Id") & ", " & dr("Name") & ", " & dr("Birthdate"))
'Expected output:
'AAA
Aaron
5/4/1975
Next
QryConn.Close()
End Sub
End Class

I created a dbo.Calendar table that stores dates and a work day flag (1=work day, 0=non-work day) so I can use it to calculate the next business date from a date using a function. I'm using a while group to count only the work days and a couple other internal variables but I'm not sure if I can even use them in a function.
Assuming Sats & Suns are all non-work days in April 2014, if my @WorkDays = 10 for 10 work days and my @DateFromValue - 4/1/2014, I would expect my return date to be 4/15/2014.
------ Messages after I click execute on my query window that has my function ------------------------------------------------------

Hi,
Does anyone know if you can run MSSoap on a Windows Vista OS? reason being I have upgraded my laptop from Windows XP to Vista and now I cant get SOAP to work atall, where as on Windows XP I could.
Basically this is my typical install
Install SOAP Toolkit 3.0
Instal MSXML 4.0
Install RegLogEventDLLs
Register following DLLs:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMSSoapBinariesMSSOAP30.dll
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMSSoapBinariesSOAPIS30.dll
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMSSoapBinariesWHSC30.dll
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMSSoapBinariesWISC30.dll
Register my SOAP Object DLLs
Configure IIS as follows:
Add ISAPI Extension .WSDL to use "C:Progra~1Common~1MSSoapBinariesSOAPIS30.dll"
if its a Windows 2003 server then I allow unknown ISAPI Extensions
Configure user credentials to run the SOAP Objects under Directory SecurityAuthentication
Setup Virtual Direcorys for each of my SOAP Objects
Restart IISThen with a bit of luck it all kinda works however under Windows Vista things are slightly different in that I cant find where to add the ISAPI Extension for the .WSDL or where to set user credentials to run my SOAP Objects.
When i use my test application to call one of my SOAP Objects I get a 5415 Timeout.
Has anyone got any ideas what i'm doing wrong or if i need to configure anything differently or install a newer version of the SOAPToolkit or anything?
Cheers
Steve

Does sseutil work properly on vista? I need a way to programmatically detach a user instance on Vista.
The following launches and runs ok on XP.
Doesn't run on Vista? Is there some problem with Process on Vista? sseutil runs ok from the command line in Vista.
public void DetachDatabase(string filePath)
{
ProcessStartInfo startInfo = new ProcessStartInfo("SSEUtil.exe");
startInfo.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Normal; //.Hidden;
startInfo.Arguments = "-d "" + filePath + """;
Process detachProcess = Process.Start(startInfo);
while(!detachProcess.HasExited)
{
Thread.Sleep(1000);
}
}
