I am trying to install SQL server 6.5 for my SMS server. The installation stops with the message "could not connect to SQL server". There was evaluation version of SQL server 6.5 previously in the same server. I doubt that it was completely removed as when I try the upgrade option instead of install option, I get a message " early beta version of SQL server 6.5 detected". I am unable to use the deinstall option in the setup as it is dimmed. How do I completely remove all the files and registry entries so that I can do a fresh install?
I have run sql server 2000 and analysis manager on my laptop for a few months with no probs. On Monday I tried to connect to my computer server from sql server ent manager and it said "no datasource found." and something else about MS ODBC drivers being invalid. Analysis services still worked fine. I tired to connect and add servers and it just would not recognise anything so became software I could not use at all. I then uninstalled all sql server products on my computer. I thought a fresh reinstall would do the job. However now when I try to install sql server I get an error in the installation. It says that it cannot connect to the datasource and installation fails. It tells me to look in a sqlstp log and the bottom of this log is below
15:50:25 Begin Action: DialogShowSdUninstall 15:50:28 ShowDlgUninstall returned : 1 15:50:28 End Action DialogShowSdUninstall 15:50:28 Dialog 0x80000000 returned: 1 15:50:28 End Action ShowDialogsHlpr 15:50:28 ShowDialogsGetDialog returned: nCurrent=0x0,index=0 15:50:28 End Action ShowDialogs 15:50:29 Action CleanUpInstall: 15:50:29 StatsGenerate returned: 2 15:50:29 StatsGenerate (0xc0200805,0x2,0xf000000,0x400,1033,303,0x2,0x1,0 ,0,0 15:50:29 StatsGenerate -1,rj) 15:50:29 Installation Failed.
I havent shown the rest of the log because there is a lot of it. If needed I can copy in the rest.
The rest of the installation up to this point seems fine. HOwever it doesnt install the unistall files so I cannot uninstall SQL Server now. There is 105 MB of the program on my computer which I can only delete although I havent done this yet.
Why wont sql server let me install? It is a really annoying problem because it worked fine last Friday and then on Monday it went wrong and I cannot remember doing anything to make this happen. All MS updates are up-to-date. Any help is greatly appreciated
I am trying to install SQL Server 2005. I just installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2005(.NET). I got an option in my Start -> Programs for Microsoft SQL Server 2005. But I don't see how to bring up the query analyzer. It just has options for Configuration Tools ->SQL Server Configuration Manager,SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting, SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Did I install it wrong by chance? Do I need to do something else now? Do I need to configure it? If yes, how do I do that? Could anyone lead me in the right direction please? Thanks!
I have no idea how to proceed since I've never installed this before. Could anyone please help me install or do whatever needs to be done to it so I can bring up the query analyzer/user interface and be able to use SQL?
When trying to install SP4, I do not receive any notification of the install i.e. click on setup and then nothing. Checked *.out log and receive the following:

I am having trouble installing SQL Server 2005 on a new machine at a hosted company. I am only installing the minimum, SQL Databaes Services. It errors out at the end and says see log. I have installed SQl 2005 10 times with no problem at other locations. The service won't even start it says error 3 path unkown. If I look for the path it shows in the service it hasn't been created, the files and directories were not created at that directory location. I tried to install bot as a Domain Admin and Local Admin accounts.

I was having trouble with SQL server 2005 and reporting services. Finally I had to un-install and then re-install, had trouble with uninstalling initially. I couldn't use Add/Remove to remove Microsoft SQL Server 2005 until I found this command: "%ProgramFiles%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapARPWrapper.exe" /Remove from http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=354408&SiteID=1
So I was able to remove (from what I know) all traces of SQL 2005 and its configuration tools. However when I reinstall it, I only have the configuration tools installed. Going to Start>>Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - configuration tools is all i have. Going to Add Remove Programs I can see Microsoft SQL Server 2005 along with Microsoft SQL Server Native Client.
When I use windows exploerer the only folders I see in c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server are: 80, 90, InetPub, MSSQL.1, MSSQL.2, MSSQL.3
when I install SP2 everything but PRODUCT INSTANCE Database Services MSSQLSERVER
install correctly.
After that nothing changes.
My questions are; do I really have SQL Sever installed so that I can create and edit queries, reports, etc. And if I do how do I access it? It seems like something is left over telling the installer that I already have SQL already installed but not the configurations tools. So it just installs them.
I downloaded the 2 CD ISO Format from msdn to install SQL Server 2005 English Developer Edition on my XP SP2 box.
I currently have SQL 2000 running. So Sql Server 2005 Dev Edition is to run side by side in a named instance.
From CD1, I launched default.hta and could not install Database Services. The log mentioned could not find a 'valid copy of xxx.msi' where xxx is VSS writer, Database Services or SQL XML4 etc...
I tried 3 times and each time it damaged my SQL2000 beyond repair.
I've developed a desktop application for a company. It uses click once deployment and has a few prereqs: .NET Framework 2.0, j# .NET redistributable, windows installer 3.1 and SQL Server 2005 express edition.
Most of the time the application downloads and installs fine. However, one user has a problem. I'm fairly certain it's machine / OS related and I wonder if there is a way to get around it.
The user has a Windows 2000 machine, Pentium III, with 512 MB of RAM.
On their first try, they received an error while installing SQL Server 2005 Express. The error code the user found in the install log was 70095. Apparently the user found some information directing them to install the current MDAC 2.8 SP 1. After rebooting and trying the install again, it errored out. The new error code is 1706. Below is the install log.
As I said, I'm faily certain it's an OS issue, but I do hope there is a way around the issue other than trying to get the user to upgrade. If you need any other information, please let me know and I'll try to get it from the user.
Thanks,

I am installing Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition. Everything goes well until the installation of SQL Server Express occurs. SQL Express installation progresses fine until very end of the installation. At that point it becomes stuck.
The installation says "Current component is installing" and is stuck on that message. The installer does not seem to be frozen as the picutres changes. However CPU usage for the setup processes is 0.
I have disabled all virus scanning software already.
Sorry if this seems to be very basic question. But after 5 hours I am thinking may be I am missing something.
I had always setup the dbs in server environment and I had never any issues but on my new Vaio Laptop with XP. Last time it was rather easy and I can not remember such issues. I downloaded (MSDE 2000) Release A from Microsoft and setting it up.
I set it up with the with the same parameters using an .ini file, I used Notepad to create a file named MyParameters.ini with these contents:
I find that my Visual studio is showing the instance at "Vaio/MSSQL" where Vaio is my Laptop. The setup created a folder in D:MSDEMSSQL$MSSQL and not in the target directory MSDE!!
Also my enterprise manager can not find it at all.
Also In visual studio I dont seem to be able to connect using my sa_password.
When trying to install SQL Server 2005 Express, it hangs up on "Detecting Installed IIS". This happens if I have IIS installed, and if I do not. My computer is running XP Media Edition. I found a similar question asked by flashg on these forums, but there was no answer to the problem. There were a few other people who posted the same problem.
Is there any fix to this? I am writing software that I planned on using SQL Server Express to store its data with. But if SQL Server is going to cause problems on my customer's computers then I cannot use it.
This is the end of the log file for my SQL Server installation:

I was trying to install visual studio 2005 and as part of it I wanted to install sql express as well. It installed the rest okay but not the sql express. Going through the log file I figured out that there was some incompatible beta version installed and hence had to be removed. In the log file I got the following error messages. Going through the forum suggestion I was trying to use msiexec /x to deinstall each of them but got the error message that "The setup has encountered an unexpected error in datastore. The action is Write_CommitFlag. The error is unable to write property into cache: flagCommit. Unable to write property into cache: "flagCommit" XmiRW Error: Failure loading xmlrw.dll CheckAllProcedures. returned 2". After this error message when I check the sql server configuration manager, I still see the old instances running.
I followed up another forum suggestion where I completely installed the old CTP and used the tool provided in the DVD(sqlbuw) to uninstall it but it only removes the one instance and leaves the rest on the system.
I will really appreciate help...

In order to deploy a corporate application on WM 5 devices, I've built an autorun.exe that performs some calls to wceload.exe to install cab files.
Everything is installing correctly, except SQL Mobile 3.0 (and its replication library). Here is the files the autorun.exe installs : compact framework 2.0 SP1 (NETCFv2.wm.armv4i.cab) french strings (System_SR_FR.cab) Sql mobile 3.0 (sqlce30.ppc.wce5.armv4i.CAB) Sql Mobile 3.0 replication (sqlce30.repl.ppc.wce5.armv4i.CAB) and also app cabs (app.cab, app2.cab, etc...)
The command line I execute in the autorun.exe is this one :
wceload.exe fullpath_to_cab_file.cab /silent
when I run this command line, I get no error (exit code of wceload.exe is 0). Bu when I run the application (a C# app) I get an error that one the assembly cannot be loaded. A further investigations later, I discovered that if I install sql mobile (the two cab files) by clicking on the cab on the device through files explorer, not only I get no error while installing, but also the application works correctly.
So I have two questions : 1. what can be possible reasons that make the autorun.exe fails to install Sql Mobile ? 2. In a more general way, how can I correctly handle wceload errors ?
FYI, I don't care about certificates, since the chosen device is a device where the security has been turned off. Another precision : the final users won't have access to a computer to deploy the app. That's why I choose to use an autorun.exe file.
I am having trouble getting the Critical Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB 934458) to install successfully. Message simply states the updates was unsuccessful. After that I am unable to connect to SQL Server via SSMS. Only rebooting the computer allows me to reconnect. Then Automatic updates won't leave me alone and wants to try it again. Hmmmmm.
I then tried to download (SQLServer2005-KB934458-x86-ENU.exe) and try it again. While running the update I noticed it was now referred to as "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 Cumulative Hotfix 3054". Are these the same thing? Any hoot, it still fails to install. As each component failed, for what looks to be the same reason (See below), I allowed the installation wizard to report it's findings back to Microsoft.
Oh and one other observation. It appears as though Microsoft had a similar issue when they release SS2k5 SP1. They issed a workaround. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B918357. If this is the same problem, why wouldn' t they try to fix it before releasing SP2?
Any way back to my current issue, clicking on the View Summary at the Installation Complete dialog reveals the following. Can someone help?
Thanks!!!

Hi. I am taking a certification class for which I recieved MSDE 2000 SQL server to use. I had a version that came with my textbook installed, and uninstalled it to use this one. Now I can no longer install either version, when I try it gives me a "instance name specified is not valid" error message when I start the installation, then kills it. Anyone have any ideas?

"None of the selected features can be installed or upgraded. Setup cannot proceed because no effective change is being made to the machine..."
this shows when trying to install SQL Server 'Management Tools', under Client Components, in the Tools install section, although i manually select 'Entire feature will be installed' (initially, all features are ticked off with a red X).
this error message shows up regardless of which feature i choose to install. it wouldn't even install books online.
I'm new to SQL Server and am now learning how to operate SQL Server Express 2005.
I'm getting the following error when attempting to install Visual Web Developer 2005 SP1.
"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch"
My machine runs on XP Pro SP2, .NET Framework 3.5.
Currently, what i have got on the computer are as follows Microsoft SQL Server 2005: SQL Server Management Studio Express, SQL Server Configuration Manager.
Hi, I have installed SQL Server 2005(Express edition) and Visual Basic 2005(Express edition) along with the SQL ServerBusiness Intelligence Development Studio and SQL Server Management Studio Express. However when I open BIDS, VS2005 opens instead and there are only 2 templates for new projects. I dont find the other templates for creating new projects that should be present in BIDS . Could some one please tell me how to get the other new project templates??
I've downloaded & installed Visual Web developer Express and SQL Server Express and now I'm trying to install the Reporting Add-In available here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/downloads/default.aspx
It downloads just fine and, just as the installation progress bar is almost done and the status text says 'Registering Product', I get the following error message:
"There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personell or package vendor"
Running VWD shows the ReportViewer control now appears in the 'data' group. I can add it to a form, but I cannot create a new report, as clicking on 'Design a new report' under the ReportView Tasks popup menu does nothing.
Is it possible to install and configure the MSDTC resource in a SQL Server 2000 cluster after SQL is installed and running?
When I recently went through a rebuild of my cluster, I forgot to install the resource before installing SQL Server. Now, if I install and bring online the MSDTC resource the SQL disk groups will not fail over correctly. The SQL Server resource will not come online.
Thanks in advance for any help. I would really like to avoid rebuilding again.
Hi all, Im new here so il start with a little introduction of myself, My name is Arjan im 19 years old from Holland, and i work for a company to compleet my ICT Education.
My situation:
My boss gave me a server with server 2003 standard and Sql server 2005 and visual studio 2005 installed already, he asked me if i could figure out how the 'new' reporting services work, Im pretty new to SQL and the reporting service but i figured out i had to install asp.net / frameworks and IIS.
So right now i wanna start the Reporting Services Configuration Manager and i get an error that says 'Invalid namespace' and when im trying to approach by using my browser i get 'page not found' so obviously their is Alot wrong. I asked my boss if i could not reinstall everything and do it in the correct order (IIS / ASP.net / Frameworks before installing SQL server 2k5 but that was not an option because we dont seem to have the cd's anymore.
The server is not connected to any network or the internet.
My Question:
Is their any way to fix this? and if yes could anyone tell me where to start
Thanks in Advance!
ps if their is information or logs that u need in order to help me just say so :-)

I downloaded a sample blog sample from Scot Mitchel and wanted to try it out. I attached the .mdf file to SQL Server 2005 but noticed that, when I create users they don't come into the database that I attached, though all the necessary aspnet_ tables are in there but in the dedicated table I didn't see any new user. My dedicated database (LocalSqlServer) is in another database. I have the connectionstring made up in the machine.config file in the LocalSqlServer name.So I thought that the web.config does override the settings in the machine.config I could easily place this in my web.config:<remove name="LocalSqlServer"/> <add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=TESTINGDBSERVER;Initial Catalog=ScotBlog;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>But that too doesn't do the trick. Does anyone have an anwser on what's going wrong here? And especially how I can solve this...
I am having trouble using the CONTAINS function in sqlserver(enterprise manager). I am typing the following:Select *FROM mytableWHERE CONTAINS(myfield,'mystring')This returns the error:Query Designer encountered a MS Design Tools error:ODBC error:[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]'CONTAINS' is not arecognizedfunction name.[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQLServer]Statement(s) couldnot be prepared.According to the T-SQL reference on msdn this is a supported function?Am I typing something incorrectly? If this is not supported, isthere an equivalent to this function? In my field I have some commadelimited values ie 'apple, orange'. So I need to be able to discernwhich records contain orange. The LIKE keyword doesn't seem to workfor this scenario. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Greetings We're having trouble getting the Agent started. The service is set to login as NT AUTHORITY/System. In an effort to attempt to diagnose the problem we changed the service (using Service Control Manager) to login as a user with Administrator rights on the server and we got the same error, except for that user.
[298] SQLServer Error: 18456 Login failed for user NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM [SQL STATE 28000] [298] SQL Server Error: 4060 Cannot open database "EP_SessionState" requested by the login. The login failed [SQL STATE 42000]
I'm sure this is a common problem with an easy solution however I can not find out much about EP_SessionState through Google and was hoping someone could help.
