UPDATE Query On Partial Field

Aug 6, 2007

How would I accomplish update just a part of a field? I have 500+ records in a table that got written as \share01234.jpg, \share01235.jpg...\share01734.jpg but the records should have ended with .tif instead. Now the application cannot find the correct image because the extension is incorrect. How can I use the Update statement to just change the extension on these records?

Thanks.

Query To Update Partial String

Mar 21, 2000

Sorry, I realize that this is probably a pretty simple question for you, but I am in a quick time bind and would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this update that I'm trying to run.

Let's say you have a table (call it testtable) that contains the column "text".

Now in column text you want to replace all instantiations of the phrase "in the US" with "to the United States", how would you structure your update query to perform this change (Please note that this phrase could be embedded in the middle of a larger sentence like 'Send a package in the US'. You'd want to change this instance to 'Send a package to the United States')

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it guys.

Partial Field Search

May 6, 2005

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how to do a search for a partial data match. Say one data field is 123, 234, 345, 456 and another is 111, 222, 333, 444 and another is 555, 666, 777, 888 and I want to search for the unique number 234 but not the whole number 123, 234, 345, 456 ... is there any way to do that or does every search have to be exactly like the data in the field?
Thanks for any help.

Order By Partial Field

Nov 13, 2006

How can I "Order By" the second + third characters of a 7 char field ?

Sample data looks like:

LCA - L

LCB - L

LCF - M

LCE - M

LCE - A

LCA - A

LCB - A
If I order by the whole field I get:

LCA - A

LCA - L

LCB - A

LCB - L

LCE - A

LCE - M

LCF - L

LCF - M
What I want is:

LCA - L

LCB - L

LCF - L

LCA - A

LCB - A

LCE - A

LCE - M

LCF - M
I'm still at the stage in this project were I can 'split' the field (if I have to) into first 3 and last 1. But the sort order of the last 1 is not alphabetic (I want 'L', 'A', "M").
Can I substitute a custom SortOrder some way ? (I've done that with mainframe Cobol).
All suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Roger

Partial Field Formatting

Feb 8, 2008

Is it possible to format just part of a field? I've got a report that return a collection of users based on some search criteria. Bascially, you enter a string and the report returns all users with a user name or display name simialr to your search string. I wanted to highlight the part of the name that matches the search string.

For instance, if you search for 'nny'

You might see a result of 'Johnny User'

Thanks.

Partial SQL Update/replace Script Question

Apr 10, 2007

I need to do an update to several tables that would update just a few characters w/in a string. So if the String is 1122334455 I would need to update just '1122' and replace with '0000' - leaving '0000224455'.

I've tried the update/replace functions and they're not working. How would I do this or would I just create a trigger?

Thanks in advance any info

Need Help With Update Query To Populate New Field

Oct 31, 2006

Hi folks:

I have added a new field to an established table, and am having trouble figuring out how to populate its values:

Two tables are involved: Jobs and Parts

There is a one-to-one relationship between each JobID and its PartID

Each Part has a PartPrice. Now I have added to the Jobs table a JobPrice field. Whenever a new Job is created, JobPrice takes the current value of its Part's PartPrice. Each Job's JobPrice remains constant for historical purposes, while the PartPrice may fluctuate at my client's whim.

The trouble is that the Jobs table is 10k+ records large, and I need to fill the JobPrice values. I am at a loss. I know how to commit the update one record at a time:

UPDATE Jobs

SET JobPrice = (SELECT PartPrice FROM Parts WHERE (PartID = [the part in question]))

WHERE (JobID = [the job in question])

My SQL knowledge is limited to basic statements that I use in my .NET work, and I rarely create anything in Management Studio more elaborate than what you see above. Many thanks for your time,

Matt

Creating Query To Update A Field For Multiple Items

Looking to write an query that will update a field for multiple items, like 1,500.

something like:

UPDATE INMAST

WHERE
INMAST.FPARTNO = 'xxx'

only issue I'm having is a need to do a JOIN because there's one more condition that must be met from another table, i've tried this:

SET FPRICE = 111.11
JOIN INVCUR
ON
(inmast.fpartno + inmast.frev)= (invcur.fcpartno + invcur.fcpartrev)

WHERE
INMAST.FPARTNO = 'NRE'
AND
invcur.flanycur = 'TRUE'

but that is giving me an error around the JOIN

SQL Server 2008 :: Update Null Enabled Field Without Interfering With Rest Of INSERT / UPDATE

Apr 16, 2015

If I have a table with 1 or more Nullable fields and I want to make sure that when an INSERT or UPDATE occurs and one or more of these fields are left to NULL either explicitly or implicitly is there I can set these to non-null values without interfering with the INSERT or UPDATE in as far as the other fields in the table?

EXAMPLE:

CREATE TABLE dbo.MYTABLE(
ID NUMERIC(18,0) IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
FirstName VARCHAR(50) NULL,
LastName VARCHAR(50) NULL,

[Code] ....

If an INSERT looks like any of the following what can I do to change the NULL being assigned to DateAdded to a real date, preferable the value of GetDate() at the time of the insert? I've heard of INSTEAD of Triggers but I'm not trying tto over rise the entire INSERT or update just the on (maybe 2) fields that are being left as null or explicitly set to null. The same would apply for any UPDATE where DateModified is not specified or explicitly set to NULL. I would want to change it so that DateModified is not null on any UPDATE.

INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
VALUES('John','Smith',NULL)

INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName)
VALUES('John','Smith')

INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
SELECT FirstName, LastName, NULL

Procedure Or Query To Make A Comma-separated String From One Table And Update Another Table's Field With This String.

Feb 13, 2006

We have the following two tables :

Link  ( GroupID int , MemberID int )
Member ( MemberID int , MemberName varchar(50), GroupID varchar(255) )

The Link table contains the records showing which Member is in which Group. One particular Member can be in
multiple Groups and also a particular Group may have multiple Members.

The Member table contains the Member's ID, Member's Name, and a Group ID field (that will contains comma-separated
Groups ID, showing in which Groups the particular Member is in).

We have the Link table ready, and the Member table' with first two fields is also ready. What we have to do now is to
fill the GroupID field of the Member table, from the Link Table.

For instance,

Read all the GroupID field from the Link table against a MemberID, make a comma-separated string of the GroupID,
then update the GroupID field of the corresponding Member in the Member table.

Please help me with a sql query or procedures that will do this job. I am using SQL SERVER 2000.

Update A Field With Count (*)

Hi,

I am trying to update a field in a temptable with the count of items in another table. To illustrate, CustomerID=23 and I want the number of occurences in the temp table. Here's the code which DOESN'T work:

INSERT INTO TempTable
(
CustomerID,
FirstName,
LastName,
DateAdded,
AlbumPicture,
LayoutCount
)
SELECT
Albums.CustomerID,
Customers.FirstName,
Customers.LastName,
DateAdded,
AlbumPicture,
COUNT(*) FROM Layouts WHERE Layout.customerID = Albums.CustomerID
FROM
Albums JOIN
Customers on (Albums.CustomerID=Customers.CustomerID)

Please take a look at the COUNT line. Here I want to count the occurences of a specific customerid in another table and put in into th LayoutCount field.

SQL server reports "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'FROM'". Any ideas how to achieve this?

Many thanks!!

Update A Decimal Field To 0

This table is also very wide (meaning lot of columns). A simple
query like this -

Update Table1
Set [Decimal Field1] = 0,
[Decimal Field2] = 0,
[Decimal Field3] = 0

is taking forever (1+ hours) to run.

Either I may be doing something stupid here or I am missing
something vital.

Thanks for any help.

How To Update Text Field

Hi all,

I have a table with millions of records, table has three fields: case_id,line_no and notedata field, notedata field is 60 chars long, datatype varchar.for each case_id there could be as many as 2000 line_no meaning 2000 notes. I need to compress these notes into one note by case_no, For example case_no 1 could have 2000 lines of notes but my comressed table shoul have only one line containing all 2000 notes in line_no sequence.
