UPDATE Column In Table1 From 2 Columns...

Jan 22, 2007

Hey ya'll...

I need to create a query that I can run that will allow me to essentially take the first initial and last name and combine them from two columns in one table and update one column with that new data in another table. Example of need:

UPDATE tblLogin.UserName with (first character(tblEmployee.FName)+(tblEmployee.LName)) WHERE tblLogin.EmployeeID = tblEmployee.EmployeeID.

That was TOTALLY pseudo code and I know I'll need a join statement in there somewhere. Both tables reside on the same database, such as this:

dbEMPLOYEE (Database)
--> tblLogin (Table)
----> UserName (Column)
--> tblEmployee (Table)
----> FName (Column)
----> LName (Column)

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Hopefully something soon - this was handed to me a few minutes ago and I have a few minutes to get it done.

Match Two Columns Of Table1 With Table2?

Feb 1, 2014

I have two tables with similar two columns as shown below

table1
code | organisation
256 | abc
832 | xyz
893 | tax
921 | abc
951 | abc

table2
code | organisation
951 | abc
832 | xyz
256 | abc
893 | tax
921 | tax

Now, I want to check whether all the codes in table1 existing in table2 and list them, and if both columns from table1 is matching with the both columns in table2. For e.g. 256|abc in table1 is matching with 256|abc in table2

The output should be :

921 | tax

For e.g. 256abc is there or not in table2,

I'm trying to update a value into a table a sum. The two tables have ID values. These ID values appear once in Table1 and multiple times in Table2. I'm currently trying to sum up the values in Table2 where the IDs are equal to Table1 and then update the value:

How To Update A Column With The Sum Of Two Columns In A Table

May 9, 2008

I have a simple question that is more about performance on my code for updating a column with the sum of two columns:

Example

Table = dbo.adding

c1 c2 c3Sum
1 2
3 5
4 6

Now if I just simple write

Update dbo.adding
set c3SUM = c1 + c2

This works, but there is a null in c1 or c2 then I know I can write this:

if exists (select * from dbo.adding where c1 is NULL)

Update dbo.adding

set c1 = '0', c3SUM = '0' + c2 where c1 is NULL

if exists (select * from dbo.adding where c2 is NULL)

Update dbo.adding

set c2 = '0', equals = c1 + '0' where c2 is NULL

Update dbo.adding

set c3SUM = c1 + c2

This works as well, but I am not sure how perficient it is being that from my understanding the code will evaluate the table three times and update it based on the criteria. If the table consists of 100,000 rows then this might not be a good solution

Is there a more proficient way to do this... I personally try to as little coding as possible to help increase performance. I know I can make this very complex and declare variables and put everything in a loop, but I personally think that would be less profient..

Hi everyoneI am trying to create a DELETE Trigger. I have 2 tables. Table1 andTable2. Table 2 has all the same fields and records as Table1 + 1extra column "date_removed"I would like that when a record is deleted from Table 1, the triggerfinds that record in Table2 and updates the date_removed filed withcurrent time stamp.The primary key on both is combination of domain,admin_group and cn.CREATE TRIGGER [tr_updateTable2] ON [dbo].tbl_Table1FOR DELETEASUpdate Table2SET date_removed = getDate()I'm stuck here, how do I manipulate on Table2 only the records thatwere deleted on Table1, so to only update date_removed filed for themin Table2?I guess i need to compare domain, cn and admin_group, but I don't knowhow.Any help would be greatly appreciatedThanks! :-)

Transact SQL :: How To Update Subsequent Columns If Proceeding Column Is Not Null

Jul 7, 2015

I've got a table with 6 fields :

EmployeeAccess
(MasterID, LoginID, AccessID, Storage1, Storage2, Storage3)
that needs to be updated using the data in the following spreadsheet
NewEmployeeAccessData
(ID, MasterID, AccessID1, LoginID1)

There is a 1:1 relationship between the two tables..I'm trying to code a pair of update statements on the EmployeeAccess table (1 for LoginID, 1 for AccessID) with the following logic:

If LoginID is NULL, then Update LoginID with new LoginID1 value,
If LoginID is not null, and Storage1 is NULL then Update Storage1 with New LoginID1 values
If LoginID is not null, and Storage1 is not NULL and Storage2 is NULL then Update Storage2 with New LoginID1 values
etc etc...

The same applies when trying to populate the AccessID column

If AccessID is NULL, then Update AccessID with new AccessID1 value,
If AccessID is not null, and Storage1 is NULL then Update Storage1 with New AccessID1 values
If AccessID is not null, and Storage1 is not NULL and Storage2 is NULL then Update Storage2 with New AccessID1 values
etc etc.

I have no control over the schema of this table  so I'm trying to work the logic on how to update the columns in my table only if the corresponding column data is NULL, else update the next non NULL Storage column.

SQL Server 2014 :: How To Update Values Based On Column Into Multiple Columns In Another Table

Jul 31, 2015

I have a table #vert where I have value column. This data needs to be updated into two channel columns in #hori table based on channel number in #vert table.

CREATE TABLE #Vert (FILTER VARCHAR(3), CHANNEL TINYINT, VALUE TINYINT)
INSERT #Vert Values('ABC', 1, 22),('ABC', 2, 32),('BBC', 1, 12),('BBC', 2, 23),('CAB', 1, 33),('CAB', 2, 44) -- COMBINATION OF FILTER AND CHANNEL IS UNIQUE
CREATE TABLE #Hori (FILTER VARCHAR(3), CHANNEL1 TINYINT, CHANNEL2 TINYINT)
INSERT #Hori Values ('ABC', NULL, NULL),('BBC', NULL, NULL),('CAB', NULL, NULL) -- FILTER IS UNIQUE IN #HORI TABLE

One way to achieve this is to write two update statements. After update, the output you see is my desired output

UPDATE H
SET CHANNEL1= VALUE
FROM #Hori H JOIN #Vert V ON V.FILTER=H.FILTER
WHERE V.CHANNEL=1 -- updates only channel1
UPDATE H
SET CHANNEL2= VALUE
FROM #Hori H JOIN #Vert V ON V.FILTER=H.FILTER
WHERE V.CHANNEL=2 -- updates only channel2
SELECT * FROM #Hori -- this is desired output

my channels number grows in #vert table like 1,2,3,4...and so Channel3, Channel4....so on in #hori table. So I cannot keep writing too many update statements. One other way is to pivot #vert table and do single update into #hori table.

How Can I Set Constant Padding Between The Columns Of The Column Chart(stacked Column Sub-type)?

Aug 2, 2006

Hi All,

I am working on a column chart type (stacked column sub-type) report.

Our customer requires us that the space(padding) between the columns should be a constant(including the space between the Y-axis and the first column). I know how to set the width of the columns, but I really don't know how to set the width of the space between them. The columns just varies the space between them automatically according to the number of the columns (the number of the columns is not certain).

Thanks a lot in advance!

SQL Server 2012 :: Update A Column Using Value Of Another Column

Sep 9, 2015

I have a student table like this studentid, schoolID, previousschoolid, gradelevel.

I would like to load this table every day from student system.

During the year, the student could change schoolid, whenever there is a change, I would put current records schoolid to the previous schoolid column, and set the schoolid as the newschoolid from student system.

My question in my merge statement something like below

Merge into student st
using (select * from InputStudent ins)
on st.id=ins.studentid

When matched then update

set st.schoolid=ins.schoolid
, st.previouschoolid= case when (st.schoolid<>ins.schoolid) then st.schoolid
else st.previouschoolid
end
, st.grade_level=ins.grade_level
;

My question is since schoolid is et at the first line of set statement, will the second line still catch what is the previous schoolid?

Update Only Changed Columns

Sep 25, 2007

i there,

I've got a problem With updates on a Table.

I want to update only the Columns which are different to the values of my update-Statement.

One of the problems is an update trigger , which is fired on all update statements.
I want the trigger to be fired only when there are real changes.
Of course i can retrospectively check if there was a real, but i can't devide the real updatet colums from the non changed values. I know there is a statement like RowsUpdated but it doesn't work that way. It indicates also the non changed columns. To lock the row pessimistic read and compare the contents before update is also no option for me.

Is there any command to perform this in a smart way? Or should it be suggested for the next version of SQL-Server like "UPDATE CHANGES MY_TABLENAME SET MY_COLUMN= ... "

thanks in advance
Raimund

Convert Money Columns To Update?

Apr 13, 2007

 Hi Guys
I need your help again, I am try to update several columns and the data type is 'money'.
Below is the code I have used:
 UPDATE CAT_Products SET
UnitCost ='10.00',UnitCost2 = '10.00',UnitCost3 = '10.00',UnitCost4 = '10.00',UnitCost5 = '10.00',UnitCost6 =  '10.00'
WHERE ProductCode = '0008'
But it will not update, instead I get this error:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
>[Error] Script lines: 1-9 -------------------------- Disallowed implicit conversion from data type varchar to data type money, table 'dbo.CAT_Products', column 'UnitCost'. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.
 More exceptions ... Disallowed implicit conversion from data type varchar to data type money, table '.dbo.CAT_Products', column 'UnitCost2'. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The error message indicates that I need to use the convert function.  But the columns data type is set at 'money' not 'varcher' .  So do I need to convert data type to 'varcher' in order to update and convert back to data type 'money' when update complete?  Or do I need to indicate in the update statement that data type is already 'money'? I am not sure how I would either.
Thanks

I have a table with transactions - with tran types as the key.

in this example, types = A,B,C ,D.

in this first example I am updating the sum of QTY to value t_A based on
tran types =A.

can I perform sub query/case to update with the same where clause
but for types B,C and D?? I also have to insert for specific lot numbers each sum values.

Create table #t_reconcile(
t_lot_number int not null,
t_A float,
t_B float,
t_C float,
t_D float)

insert #t_reconcile

select t.lot_number, sum(t.qty)

i.transaction_type = 'A'
