Unable To Connect To SQLEXPRESS From A Client In A Workgroup (Error 40)

Hi to everyone!
Here is my problem: I have SQLEXPRESS running with Windows Authentication on a "server" PC named "ASUS1", and I need to connect from a "client" PC named "Presario1", user "Mauro", connected through a peer network (I use a cross-over cable); both PCs belongs to the same workgroup named "RMT-WORK", and they can see each others shared folders without problems.
I have installed the connectivity components + Management Studio Express on Presario1, and enabled named pipes and TCP/IP protocols; then I've got SQL Browser running. I have also added the Login "Guest" on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS.
When I start Management Studio Express on Presario1 and browse for servers I can select "ASUS1" as database engine but when I try to connect I receive "Error 40: could not open a connection to SQL Server" (same result using SQLCMD); I have tried to add on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS a user "Presario1Mauro" with "CREATE LOGIN [Presario1Mauro] FROM WINDOWS" but I receive a "Windows user not found" error...
I have set up a database in SQL Server 2005 (The express version) and am trying unsucessfully to make a connection to it from MS Visual Web Developer 2005 Express version. I always get the same error: "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this error may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - could open a connection to SQL Server)" How can I set up SQL Server to allow remote connections? I am trying to establish a connection from my web page to this database. Is there a user that I need to establish on the SQL Server side?

We are unable to connect with Client SQL database server using VPN connection, even we are able connect with their intranet site.
We tried to connect using IP address, but no success. After that tried to ping that server with server name and IP address using command prompt, but got request time out error.
As long as the output file is written to the local client, it completes successfully. But after changing the UNC path to another server with or without fully qualified names it is unable to open BCP host data-file. Upgraded Enterprise Mgr. from SQL7 to SQL 20000. When trying to connect to SQl 2000 server using Enterprise mgr using TCP/IP am getting Invalid attribute/option identifier any suggestions???
We are running SQL2K5 and have a Web server with a family of sites all sharing an identical connection string to enable ADO connection pooling between them. Today for about 20 minutes we had several (all?) connections from one site that uses a specific DB get a connection reuse error which showed in out SQL logs:
DESCRIPTION: The client was unable to reuse a session with SPID #, which had been reset for conection pooling. This error may have been caused by an earlier operation failing. Check the error logs for failed operations immediately before this error message.
We also have SQL Server slowdown and log in problems from other applications that seemed a symptom of this, or some third unknown cause. Note, the # means the run-time spid number was inserted. The misspelling "conection" comes right out of sys.messages (it is not our custom error):
select top 10 * from sys.messages where message_id = 18056
The immediately preceeding error in the SQL Log was always: Message Error: 18056, Severity: 20, State: 29.
Where Severity and State vary, but "Error: 18056" is consistent, although I can find no documentation on "Error: 18056" through Google or MSDN.
Also, the "The client was unable to reuse a session ..." error seems not to be referred to anywhere.
In our IIS logs, the matching entries are of the form:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.

My questions: Does anyone have experience with this error? We have real good history with ADO connection pooling, but can a "bad" connection be pooled, and if so can it be "flushed" or the pool "drained"?
I have a quick question regarding domains and workgroups.
Currently I am working on an issue in the office of a small business. Right now there are 3 client computers that connect to a dell server running windows std. server 2003. The server has sql running on it that takes care of the invoicing system. Two out of the three work stations are able to use the database fine, but there is one that is unable to connect to the database. The only different that I could find is that the two workstations that DO work are currently set to use a workgroup, whereas the one workstation that does NOT work is set to use a domain...... I tried switching that computer to workgroup, but then I was unable to login as the normal user that I had always logged in as before.....
What can I do to solve this dilemma?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We have recently upgraded our .Net web application from a windows 2003 server to a windows 2012 server. Since this happened users that are trying to print a reporting services report is getting the error "Unable to load client print control". We are using reporting services 2012, but the application is using the 8 version of the viewer. The reporting services server did not change only the application server. The code for the application did not change.

I have loaded NT4 onto a machine with 256MB's of ram. I have put on SP6 and the hard drive is 80GB's in size. I then loaded in SQL Server 6.5 and set up my default database at 250MB's in size. I can ping all other computers on the network and they can ping me but when I try to register the database it give me a unable to connect error. This is the 10004 error. The error is Execomm and it says the DBPROCESS is dead. I guess thats cause it won't connect. The Sqlserver is running and so is the sqlexecutive running.

Also, I am running the Upgrade advisor from my machine (SQL 2000) and trying to access the SQL 2000 db on another machine. So I do not have SQL 2005 in any machine.
On Windows XP systems I get the following issue when trying to browse the MSDB folder in SSIS

I have noticed another post where several others have noticed the same issue. It appears to only occur on Windows XP installations. Is there a workaround or fix for this?
I currently have SQL2005 Std, using 2 separate domain accounts for both SQL server and SQL agent. When accessing the MSDB stored packages folder from mgmt studio, I get the following error:
Client unable to establish connection. Encryption not supported on SQL server.
I did google for this error, but have tried all suggestions, including updating the MsDtsSvr.ini.xml file with the servername. I am using a default instance.
Also, I am only able to access the MSDB folder if I set the SQL service account to the local admin account. I have also set the SQL service account to be part of the local admins group, but without any luck.

Hi Guys, I'm trying to connect to a sql express on a workgroup PC through sql server 2005 standard edition remotely but i can't. I have checked and make sure that tcp/ip and other protocals are allowed. There is no firewall on both PCs and the sql browser service is running as well. Somehow i can connect using the IP address but not the name?

SQL Express running on Server 2003 SP1, not a domain controller - but prior to installing SQL Express, I did dcpromo promote and then demoted it back to a workgroup server.
Connecting with Vista build 5600, Studio express 9.00.2047 with MDAC 6.00.5600.1638. Server 2003 MDAC is 2.82.1830.
Is my mis-matched versions of MDAC causing me this grief?
Otherwise, I have remote set up for TCP and Named Pipes, I've run sp_configure 'remote admin connections', 1; my login is set to SQL Authentication with everything granted. I've tried running the service as network, local and MachineAdministrator; ports are open per:

I am currently trying to get my reporting services to run on a site other than the default website... on my test server are three sites listed in my IIS: Default Web Site, Microsoft Share Point Administration, and Data Test Site.
My ReportingServer and Reports directories run fine in my Local Web Site but when i add the Directories to my Data Test Site only the Reports Directory runs... the ReportServer does not run and gives me :

I've installed SQL2005 on a server already running SQL2K on my laptop. SQL2K is the default instance, so I'm trying to connect to SQL2005 using MYSERVERSQL2005 as the instance.
The steps that I've taken are to apply SP2 and enable remote connections (TCP & Named pipes). I've also made sure the SQL Server Browser service is running and enabled.

I dont understand as to why i am unable to connect to 2005.
I wrote a vb 2005 application that access sqlexpress for data using sqlconnection (.NET). The program works fine. When I run debug on my code that is in my laptop, it access my xp server box with sqlexpress running and I see all my data in my application. My question is..When I compile this program and install it on a client machine that has no sqlexpress tools, no SQLCMD etc....will the application run and access the xp server box, or do I have to install something on the client machine.
I have downloaded and installed the trial version of MS Visual Studio 2005 Team System. The installation was successful. However, I am not able to start SQLEXPRESS using the SQL Server Configuration Manager. It shows me SQLEXPRESS but when I right click and select Start it tries to start the service and after some time gives the following error
"The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details."
The event log shows the following errors:

I have finish building my ASP.NET site using VS 2005 and it compile just fine. Than I try hosting it to the web via IIS v5.1 and I am getting permission error from SQL express.

I am going to list out some stuff I have done:
1. I have two database that need access, the ASPNETDB.mdf for user login and another database (PhotoDataBase.mdf) to store information relating to the photo I uploaded to my ASP.NET site.
2. I have already follow this How to site: http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx and setup: - TCP/IP enable, as shown here: - I have started SQL Browser service - The firewall part I am not so sure about. I am currently using Zonealarm....
3. I have installed SQL Server Management Studio Express(SSMSE) and attach the two database to it.
4. I have set SSMSE server properties to accept both SQL and window authentication.
5. I have made sure that both database "read only" setting to false
6. I have setup SQL login with User ID = SQLLOGIN
Here is the original connection in web.config: <add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|Da taDirectory|PhotoDataBase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
and here is the new connection I just type in web.config that replace the original one: <add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|PhotoDataBase.mdf; Server=MINGDESKTOP; Integrated Security=False; uid=SQLLOGIN; Password=XXXXXX;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
and the error i get are the follow:

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

7. I did haven't done much to ASPNETDB.mdf yet and the error i get right now are the following:

Hi, I'm using Microsoft SQL Sever Management Studio Express. But all of a sudden, if I clicked connect button, the messageBox pops up and it doesn't let me connect. It says "TITLE: Connect to Server ------------------------------

whenever i try and choose the database i wish to work with like below. I end up with an error message about the user not being associated with a trusted sql server connection
i figured this was all permission based so i kept dorking around with security adding my user name to anything i could find, and also went through and dozen or so connection strings and found when i take out the DB name that i can open a connection.... as the code below works...
I plan on importing another database so how will i later on choose between the two, i notice i can create logins only at the security for the sqlexpress and not for my database? did i mess up how i created the database? i have added my username and given permissions to the security for the database i wish to connect to, but is there another step im missing? i would keep trucking but i would like to have multiple DB on the sql express and pick and choose at the code level, maybe im misunderstanding what the catalog should include or i can change the connections database at another point?
I am trying to use built-in login authentication using SQLExpress (SQLMembershipProvider Class). I have run the utility "aspnet_regsql" both with and without the following switches "-E -A m". Either way it fails to connect and tells me I may need to enable remote connections. I have done that and set it to use both TCP/IP and pipes, even though the connection is local. I still get the same error message. If I open up SQL Server Manager, I can see that there is a user account set up for ASPNET.
