Unable To Connect To SQLExpress Db From ASP 2.0

Apr 2, 2006

I have set up a database in SQL Server 2005 (The express version) and am trying unsucessfully to make a connection to it from MS Visual Web Developer 2005 Express version. I always get the same error:

"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this error may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - could open a connection to SQL Server)"

How can I set up SQL Server to allow remote connections? I am trying to establish a connection from my web page to this database. Is there a user that I need to establish on the SQL Server side?

Unable To Connect To SQLEXPRESS From A Client In A Workgroup (Error 40)

Jul 11, 2007

Hi to everyone!

Here is my problem: I have SQLEXPRESS running with Windows Authentication on a "server" PC named "ASUS1", and I need to connect from a "client" PC named "Presario1", user "Mauro", connected through a peer network (I use a cross-over cable); both PCs belongs to the same workgroup named "RMT-WORK", and they can see each others shared folders without problems.

I have installed the connectivity components + Management Studio Express on Presario1, and enabled named pipes and TCP/IP protocols; then I've got SQL Browser running. I have also added the Login "Guest" on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS.

When I start Management Studio Express on Presario1 and browse for servers I can select "ASUS1" as database engine but when I try to connect I receive "Error 40: could not open a connection to SQL Server" (same result using SQLCMD); I have tried to add on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS a user "Presario1Mauro" with "CREATE LOGIN [Presario1Mauro] FROM WINDOWS" but I receive a "Windows user not found" error...

Can anyone help me?

Unable To Start SQLEXPRESS

Nov 26, 2006

Hi

I have downloaded and installed the trial version of MS Visual Studio 2005 Team System. The installation was successful. However, I am not able to start SQLEXPRESS using the SQL Server Configuration Manager. It shows me SQLEXPRESS but when I right click and select Start it tries to start the service and after some time gives the following error

"The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details."

The event log shows the following errors:

1. FCB::Open: Operating system error 5(Access is denied.) occurred while creating or opening file 'c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAmastlog.ldf'. Diagnose and correct the operating system error, and retry the operation.

2. FCB::Open failed: Could not open file c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAmastlog.ldf for file number 2. OS error: 5(Access is denied.).

I tried enabling remote connections but still got the same error.

Please help.

HELP: ASP.NET Won't Connect To SQLexpress After De

Jul 31, 2007

Hello,

I have finish building my ASP.NET site using VS 2005 and it compile just fine. Than I try hosting it to the web via IIS v5.1 and I am getting permission error from SQL express.

I have posted a detail question in experts-exchange.com and since you need a user account to even view the thread, I have taken the liberty to save the thread as .html file and host it to my ISP site. You can see the detail problem I am having here: http://users.accesscomm.ca/mm/EEdetail.html

I am going to list out some stuff I have done:

1. I have two database that need access, the ASPNETDB.mdf for user login and another database (PhotoDataBase.mdf) to store information relating to the photo I uploaded to my ASP.NET site.

2. I have already follow this How to site: http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx and setup:
- TCP/IP enable, as shown here:
- I have started SQL Browser service
- The firewall part I am not so sure about. I am currently using Zonealarm....

3. I have installed SQL Server Management Studio Express(SSMSE) and attach the two database to it.

4. I have set SSMSE server properties to accept both SQL and window authentication.

5. I have made sure that both database "read only" setting to false

6. I have setup SQL login with User ID = SQLLOGIN

Here is the original connection in web.config:
<add name="ConnectionString"
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|Da
taDirectory|PhotoDataBase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

and here is the new connection I just type in web.config that replace the original one:
<add name="ConnectionString"
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|PhotoDataBase.mdf; Server=MINGDESKTOP; Integrated Security=False; uid=SQLLOGIN; Password=XXXXXX;"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

and the error i get are the follow:

Server Error in '/' Application.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

7. I did haven't done much to ASPNETDB.mdf yet and the error i get right now are the following:

Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'MINGDESKTOPASPNET'.

Please help! I am really running out of ideas.... and I need to have this setup in a few days....

Thanks!

Can Connect To Sqlexpress But Not The DB ?

Oct 6, 2006

whenever i try and choose the database i wish to work with like below. I end up with an error message about the user not being associated with a trusted sql server connection

cnStr = @"Data Source=serverSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=sqldata;User ID=blahme";

same with this one

cnStr = @"Data Source=STOCKYARDSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=DB;Trusted_Connection=Yes;";

i figured this was all permission based so i kept dorking around with security adding my user name to anything i could find, and also went through and dozen or so connection strings and found when i take out the DB name that i can open a connection.... as the code below works...

cnStr = @"Data Source=ServerSQLEXPRESS;Trusted_Connection=Yes;";

cn.Open();

I plan on importing another database so how will i later on choose between the two, i notice i can create logins only at the security for the sqlexpress and not for my database? did i mess up how i created the database?
i have added my username and given permissions to the security for the database i wish to connect to, but is there another step im missing? i would keep trucking but i would like to have multiple DB on the sql express and pick and choose at the code level, maybe im misunderstanding what the catalog should include or i can change the connections database at another point?

Cannot Connect To SQLExpress From ASP.NET

Feb 22, 2008

I am trying to use built-in login authentication using SQLExpress (SQLMembershipProvider Class). I have run the utility "aspnet_regsql" both with and without the following switches "-E -A m". Either way it fails to connect and tells me I may need to enable remote connections. I have done that and set it to use both TCP/IP and pipes, even though the connection is local. I still get the same error message. If I open up SQL Server Manager, I can see that there is a user account set up for ASPNET.

<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|Da
taDirectory|PhotoDataBase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

and here is the new connection I just type in web.config that replace the original one:
<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|PhotoDataBase.mdf; Server=MINGDESKTOP; Integrated Security=False; uid=SQLLOGIN; Password=XXXXXX;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

and the error i get are the follow:

Server Error in '/' Application.An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

7. I did haven't done much to ASPNETDB.mdf yet and the error i get right now are the following:

Server Fails To Connect To SQLExpress

Dec 26, 2006

I am trying to set-up membership options on my MS Server 2003.

I also have a Computer running MS XP Professional sp2.

With the Advanced in stall of SQLExpress - trying to establish cojnectivity on the server fails when using the ASP.NET Configuration button.

This works fine on the XP box.

On the security tab the following message apppears:

There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.

The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database.

I've compared all settings in ssemee, surface manager etc. - all identical.

run aspnet_regsql on both machines. Added the SERVERASPNET account to SQLExpress and to the aspnetdb database.

I've enabled TCP,remote connections, named pipes etc. to no avail.

Any suggestion as to what the error could be would be most appreciated - been trying now for 3 days to get this working without any success.

Can I Connect To SQLExpress Instance Using (local)

Feb 19, 2007

Hello,

I am using the following connection string to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on my local PC.
string sqlstr = "Server=(local);Database=MyDB;User ID=sa;Password=sa;Trusted_Connection=False";

And it gives me the following error. The string works fine in computer with SQL Server 2000 instance but fails with 2005. The string also fails for "Server = localhost".
However the string works very fine if I use the name of Server 2005 i.e ./SQLExpress

===================================

Cannot connect to (local).

===================================

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

------------------------------
Error Number: 2
Severity: 20
State: 0

------------------------------

Now the main problem is that, of course I could use a named instance, but since I am embedding the Connection String in a dll file so that any user can use it to connect it to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 installed in his/her computer, I need to use "server = localhost". Doesn't SQL 2005 support this. If yes, where could i find option to enable it?

I have enabled every option available in surface area configuration for SQL Server 2005, but nothing seems to help out. I even use local as well as remote connections using both TCP/IP and named pipes.
Can nyone help me out?

Can't Connect To SQL Server 2005 In Visual Studio, Only SQLExpress Works?

Jul 8, 2007

Hi all,I'm having a big problem here. I can't seem to connect to a database of MSSQL Server 2005... Here is what I've did:1. Under the Server Explorer>Data Connections. Right click and choose "Add Connection..."2. Data Source was "Microsoft SQL Server Database File". Click OK.3. I browse to the database in the MSSQL.2/MSSQL/Data folder.4. Click on the "Advanced" button, and change the default DataSource from .SQLEXPRESS to .MSSQLSERVER. Click OK5.  Received this error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default setting SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) Only .SQEXPRESS that I was able to connect to... i've tried the solution from Microsoft, opened SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration and enabled "Local and remote connections", checked the option "Using both TCP/IP and named pipes" but it didn't help. This is frustrating because I can't get the Membership provider, login to work on my host. Please help. Thank you very much,Kenny.

Cannot Connect Remotely To SQLExpress Via SQL Server Management Studio Express

Oct 31, 2007

 Hi all, I'm having a little trouble connecting to a SQLExpress instance on a remote domain using SQL Server Management Studio Express.I've read that by default the program is set up locally only, so have edited the Surface Area Configuration.  It only gives me the option to edit 'Services and Connections' on the localhost, but have edited the Remote Connections to use TCP/IP and Named Pipes. In the Management Studio, I enter the server name, and login credentials.  On the Connection Properties tab I changed the network protocol to TCP/IP though everytime I attempt to connect I get the following error message:  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rich

Unable To Connect To DB

Nov 27, 2006

Hello everybody
I wrote a vb.net win app that uses a mssql 2005 express DB.
On my localcomputer everything worked without a problem.
Now I wish to deploy my app on a remote computer (that has mssql 2005 express installed), so. I added an app setup project to my project using the vs2005 setup tool, installed the app on the remote computer, and copied the mdf file to the remote computer.
I'm able to see the DB through the remote computer mssql manager, But when I try to start the app on the remote computer I get this error massage :
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
my connectionstring (in the config file) looks like that :
    <connectionStrings>        <add name="Info_Manager.My.MySettings.MaxinetConnectionString"            connectionString="Data Source=DOTAN-XPSQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataMaxinet.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"            providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />        <add name="Info_Manager.My.MySettings.MaxinetConnectionString1"            connectionString="Data Source=DOTAN-XPSQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataMaxinet.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"            providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />    </connectionStrings>
by the way changing the user instance attribute to "false" didn't help.
Does anybody know how to fix this problem.

Unable To Connect

Apr 1, 2002

Everything has been working fine our SQL Server (lets call it Server A) (v2000 under NT 4), however sometime over the weekend it is unable to connect to one of our other SQL Servers (Server B).

In the Event Viewer I found this error:
SuperSocket info: Failed to get Exclusive port use(MSAFD Tcpip (TCP/IP)): Error 10013.

Everything on this server appears to be working fine, as in everything can connect to Sever A that needs to, but Server B can't connect to A, nor is it working the other way.

Also, Server A SQL Services run on port 2006, and B is on the standard 1433. Everything has been working with this up until today?

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Keith

MS SQL 6.5 Unable To Connect.

Jul 23, 2005

Let me start by saying that, yes we know v6.5 is no longer supported byMicrosoft and that moving to SQL2000 might resolve our problem.Actually the migration to SQL2000 is 1 to 2 months out and in the QAphase now. Unfortunately we need to resolve the current 6.5 issue nowas it heavily impacts a major revenue stream for the company with everyoutage we encounter.The Problem:At least once every 24 hours the SQL Server begins disallowing new userconnections. When this happens the 2 CPUs begin to thrash. About 5minutes later the error log begins to print out the following errormessage: "Unable to connect. The maximum number of '500' configured userconnections are already connected. System Administrator can configure toa higher value with sp_configure." No new connections can be made to theserver; however, the existing connections continue to function normally.We never see anywhere near 500 user connections in the system (it tendsto average around 350 connections). If we begin to disconnect users theserver continues reporting that the maximum number of users isconnected. Eventually running queries thru an open connection will hangand we have to resort to a hard reboot of the server as neither SQLServer will not shutdown nor will the operating system.The Server:Compaq Proliant DL380 with dual 863 MHz. processors (x86 Family 6 Model8 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel), 917,020 KB of physical memory, MicrosoftWindows 2000 Server (Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195), TotalVirtual Memory 3,138,688 KB, Page File Space 2,221,668 KBSQL Server:Microsoft SQL Server 6.50 - 6.50.479 (Intel X86). Some pertinentconfiguration settings: memory - 244100 (in 2K units), user connections– 500, RA worker threads – 3, max worker threads – 255We found one reference to the above error message in the MicrosoftKnowledge Base and that refers to a condition where the server has 2GBor more of physical memory with 1.5GB assigned to SQL Server. This doesnot pertain to our situation. Have any of you ever encountered thisproblem?I appreciate your insights.*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!

Unable To Connect

Jul 16, 2006

I am unable to connect SQL Server Management Studio to any of the databases on my computer. At this stage I am simply starting the Management Studio and asking it to connect to a database I made a few months ago before this connection trouble arose. I'm specifying the server name "BENCHLAP" which is the name of My Computer, using Windows Authentication.
The error I get is:
An
error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When
connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact
that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote
connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not
open a connection to SQL Server)
The client is local. At least, it is if I understand correctly - the instance of SQL Server is installed on the same machine as the instance of IIS that I intend to use to test my web applications after we have resolved this issue, and the same machine as the one I shall use to view the application on.
I can ping the server if i type "ping -a BENCHLAP". It is successful
I think it also connects via telnet ok as well, by typing "telnet BENCHLAP 135"
All client protocols are enabled, as are the server protocols. Don't know if this is a security risk but I did it to try and solve the problem, to no avail. There are no aliases, according to the Configuration Manager.

The server itself is SQL Server Express 2005, runnning on Windows XP Professional. My anti virus software is AVG.
I'm afraid I don't know anything more, and have been researching this error for quite some time now.
Is anybody able to help me please?
Ben

Unable To Connect .NET To SQL Express 5!!!!

Feb 10, 2008

Cannot someone please help me with following problem.  I am trying to create a program to update a sql datbase from.NET 2003.  I am doing this by using SQL Server Express 5.  The problem is, is that when I run the program and click the button to view the table in SQL Express 5 I keep getting an 'System.NullReferenceException' and the table is not shown. When I look at the debug details it says that 'object reference not set to an instance of an object'.
Am not sure where am goin wrong as the connection is opened to the local server in SQL Express and I have created a connection object and initialised it to the address fo the datatable in SQL.
Please find below the code I am working on which shows the connection string in question and the table being called in button 6  which causes the exception.
Any help would be greatly appreciated....thanks

SQL Server Unable To Connect... Please Help

Jan 14, 2000

I upgraded my 6.5 server to 7.0 two days ago running into small problems with the database upgrade wizard. I had some small problems with security which took me some time but was not that difficult once I figured it out. I then proceeded to switch back to 6.5 mode to transfer all the data that had been done that day to my development machine so I could then import it to the SQL 7.0 version. When I was done with the transfer I switched back successfully, started the server successfully, but I was unable to connect. I get the error "Connection could not be established...", so after several attempts to connect and shuting the server down I now am at a loss. The server runs fine in 6.5 mode but it will not connect in 7.0?? Tonight I am going to try to reinstall SP1, if that does not work I am going to try to reinstall SQL 7.0. Any suggestions???

Unable To Connect To Server

Nov 14, 2000

On a fresh installation of SQL Server 6.5, I have
opened the EM and registered the server but am unable
to connect. I get the error of 'A connection could not
be established to [ServerName]- [DB-Library] Unable
to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not exist.
General Network Error. Check your documentation.'

I've tried connecting with all different DB-Lib settings
to no avail. Ultimately, I want to use TCP/IP. I am,
however, able to connect to other SQL Server boxes from
this EM, just not the local server. I am able to stop
and start the services from Control Panel and from SQL
Service Manager.

Since I haven't been able to log into the local SQL Server,
I've registered the server in EM to log in with sa and a
blank password. I've already completely uninstalled SQL
and reinstalled it to see if that would help. It didn't.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Thank you!
Toni
