Unable To Connect To My SQL Database File Via A Network Drive

Apr 29, 2008

I recently created a program that connects to a Microsoft SQL database that was stored on my computer and it worked fine. As soon as I tried to connect to the same database via a network drive I got an error stating that "The file Y:Filename.mdf is on a network path that is not supported for database files.". I can't seem to get it to work, if anybody has any ideas what I'm doing wrong I would appreciate your help.

Unable To Create A Database On A Network Drive

Dec 8, 2007

I have a network drive that is mapped as Z: on my local machine. When creating a new database, that drive does not show up in the list of available paths. If I try to hardcode the drive/path info, I get an error message: "The system cannot find the path specified."

osql -E -n -d %1 -i %2kaman_full_sqldb_backup.sql -h-1 -o %3\%Computername%_kaman_full_sqldb_backup.log

In the stored procedure I try to use the x: drive and that does not work. I have tried obtaining the \192.168.x.x address and that only works on some of my servers. All are running SQL 2000, some are using Win2K and Win2003. It does not seem to matter. One of them that is using Win2003 only fails occationally.

I notice when I do a

exec master..xp_cmdshell 'x:'

The system cannot find the drive specified.

Yet, when I go to the server there is an x drive.

I am using the sqlserv user to run the job and that use is an administrator on the local machine. This is a virtual machine. We add the X before the osql and drop it after the command finishes.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, dbmsql

File System Task Error When Using SQL Server Agent (when Move File On Network Drive)

I am able to run SSIS packages as SQL Server Agent jobs with a Control Flow items "File system task", if I move a file (test.txt) from a drive (c on the server (where SQL Agent jobs run) to a subdirectory on the same drive. But, if I try to move a file on a network drive, the package fail.

What I can do to solve this issue.

Sdf File On Shared Network Drive ?

Nov 29, 2007

I know , it is not going to work , just wondering if anyone could give any reasons for that. Whether it was intentional constraint or just internally compact edition was designed in particular way which makes such a usage not possible. It is a pity that it doesn't work that way as it would be much easier transitional path for many Visual Foxpro , MS Access applications.
In my case I just want READ-ONLY database either for multi-user access via shared drive or stand-alone on local drive.

Creating A Semaphore File On A Network Drive

Jul 11, 2007

Good Morning,

I'm hoping that someone can help me. I have a SQL 2005 SSIS package that will run Friday mornings to empty/load a table with data from another database. On Friday evenings I'll need to run another package, but want to make sure the table load completed prior to launch. For this I planned to use a file watcher task, however I cannot for the life of me figure out how to output a 'done' semaphore, from the morning job, to a networked drive.

A file system task will not work because there is not a 'create file' option. I do not have an existing file that I can rename either.

I tried an execute process task running cmd.exe with the following argument:

Code Snippetecho Done> \NetworkedServerftprootLoad.Done

This fails because UNC paths are not recognized. (The package executes from another server so I cannot use a local path, nor am I allowed to set-up a local share.)

Can someone offer an alternative suggestion? I'm really hoping this is easier than I'm making it.

Thank you in advance,

Roger

Linked Server For Mdb File On A Shared Network Drive

Jan 6, 2000

Hi

I am having an Access database on a shared network drive which has read/write access rights on the that shared network drive.
When I try to Access data through the linked server it gives me gives me a message box saying you do not have permissions to view the data.
Also if i try to use xp_cmdshell to copy over the mdb file to my local drive it say 'Access denied'

But when I copy (through command prompt) the same file to another network drive or my local drive where I have full control the linked server can connect sucessfully.

The problem is the i cannot have 'full control' permissions on shared drive where my database resides.

Has anybody encountered this problem....

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

New Database On Other Local Network Drive

Jan 15, 2007

Hello,
I need help with the setup of my sql server express 2005 and more specifically, with the location of the database files.  Normally, database files are located on the c: drive.  In my situation, being in a high school environnement, I need to have the database files on the network drive ... lets call it g:drive.  The reason why it cannot be on c:drive is because this drive is protected using DeepFreeze.  Now, I was able to change the location of the new drive as I went into the properties window of the sql server instance but when I try to create this new database, sql gives me grief  ;-|
 I am from the group of people that thinks that to anything, there is a solution and am hoping that to this problem, there is hope of a solution.
 Can anyone help?

Create Database On Map Network Logical Drive

Oct 13, 2000

In 6.5 , I was NOT able to use mapped network drive for new database
device if the MSSQLSERVER service is running under local system account,
but if I changed it to using a domain a/c which has the authority to
create files on mapped drive, I was able to do it.

But if I tried it in 7.0, it never work and got msg:
Server: Msg 5105, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Device activation error. The physical file name 'e:est2.mdf' may be
incorrect.
Server: Msg 1802, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check
previous errors.

Is it something that's normal for 6.5 and 7.0 ????
i.e. we can only create databases on LOCAL drives ?
I am just thinking of in case we run of space locally, we can temporarily
make use of remote mapped network drive. (say at time of upgrading)

Any one has this experience ?

Error 18210 Backup Up SQL Server 2005 Database To Network Drive

Aug 1, 2007

I have 2 different servers that run nightly backup jobs to a network drive using the UNC format. I am noticing the larger databases encountering the following errors on a regular basis

Error: 18210, Severity: 16, State: 1.
'\fnfssql3SQLBackupsMNSQL05<database>.BAK'. Operating system error 64(The specified network name is no longer available.).
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE <database>. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.

There are 5 databases on this server all backed up by the same job and 3 of them wortk fine and 2 of them fail so it is not a permissions problem. Have there been any problems with backing up to a network drive in 2005?

Database Connection: Mapped Network Drive (VC++ Express, MSSQL SMS Express, XP)

Sep 8, 2007

Hi

I have VC++ express and MSSQL SMS express and have an application working nicely locally. The Data explorer and data connections part works really easily.

Now, I want to make the application available to my home network.

I mapped the drive where the database is and called it Z: so I could put my "release" on my other network PC and assumed it would find Z: if I mapped the shared network drive on that machine and called it Z:

But: I can't even add the mapped connection on the local machine, I get:

The file "Z:databasescalorie.mdf" is on a network path not supported for database files. An attempt to attach.....etc"

It works fine on the original F drive.......

Am I approaching this the wrong way. How should I distribute to network PCs?

thanks hopefully

Unable To Connect To SQL Server Database.

Oct 15, 2007

Hi, I am working through "Sams Teach Yourself ASP Dot NET 2.0 in 24 Hours"
I am upto hour 20 where it says
Configuring an ASP.NET Website to Support Membership
To configure our website to support membership, we must launch the ASP.NET Website Administration Tool. To accomplish this, either click the ASP.NET
Configuration icon at the top of the Solution Explorer or click the Website menu's ASP.NET Configuration option. Either way will open a web browser pointed to a page through which the ASP.NET site can be configured. Figure 20.1 shows the ASP.NET Website Administration Tool.
To add user account support, click the Security link. This will take you to the Security screen shown in Figure 20.2. From this screen, you can specify the user accounts in your system, what roles for users exist, and the access rules for users.
However when I click security I get the following error message;
"There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store."
"The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database."
If I test the provider I get this error;
"Provider Management""Could not establish a connection to the database.""If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider."
I am using MS VWD Express with MS SQL Express. I have run the 'aspnet_regsql' tool on my database which the book fails to mention and verified that the tables were created correctly. I have tried copying the MDF file directly into my 'app_data' directory but this made no difference. I have googled these errors and nothing seems to help. I can connect to the database through a 'SqlDataSource' and have had no trouble with the database in the previous sections of the book. I think it may have something to do with how I setup SQL Express or database permissions, I hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.

Restore Database When Unable To Connect?

Feb 23, 2005

Hey

Quick question for the experts here! Wink

We have the issue of wanting to restore an MSSQL database (.BAK) but are unable to "Connect" to the existing database; but we are able to "Start" the database currently.

When we are unable to perform a "Connect", then under "All Tasks" you don't get the option to "Restore Database"

I am hoping there is a way around this and still a possibility of doing a restore without having to do an entire install of MSSQL again and then a restore?

Thanks!

Unable To Connect To Webhosting SQL Database

Jun 20, 2007

I'm having a strange problem with this but I know (and admit) that the problem is on my PC and nowhere else. My firewall was causing a problem because I was unable to PING the database server, switching this off gets a successful PING immediately. The most useful utility to date is running netstat -an in the command window. This illustrates all the connections that are live and ports that are being listed to. I can establish a connection both by running

telnet sql5.hostinguk.net 1433 and

sqlcmd -S sql5.hostinguk.net -U username -P password

See below:

Both these utilities show as establishing a connection in netstat so I am able to connect the database server every time, this worked throughout yesterday and has continued this morning.

The problem is when I attempt to use SQL Server Management Studio. When I attempt to connect to tcp:sql5.hostinguk.net, 1433 nothing shows in netstat at all. There is an option to encrypt the connection in the connection properties tab in management studio, when I enable this I do get an entry in netstat -an, see below:

TCP 81.105.102.47:1138 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT

TCP 81.105.102.47:1139 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT

TCP 81.105.102.47:1140 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT

Amost as if it's trying the different ports but you get this time_wait thing. The error message is more meaningful and hopefull because I get:

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

I would expect this as the DNS has not been advised to encrypt the conection.

This is much better than the : Login failed for user 'COX10289'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) that I get, irrespective of whether I enter a password or not.

This is on a XP machine trying to connect to the remote webhosting company via the internet.
I can ping the server
I have enabled shared memory and tcp/ip in protocols, named pipes and via are disabled
I do not have any aliases set up
No I do not force encryption
I wonder if you have any further suggestions to this problem?

This is totally weird, since I've given the user every possible right in SQL Management Studio... I even tried giving it Administrator rights, to no effect. I can do a remote dekstop connection to the machine with this user and connect to the SQL server using the Management Studio and windows authentication just fine... Something I've missed?

Unable To Connect To SQL Server Database.

Nov 8, 2006

when i click on ASP.NET Configuration and then security it opens a page that says There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.

The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database. tryed doing what it sayd but didnt go.

Unable To Connect To SQL Server Database

Feb 27, 2007

I recently installed VS2005 Prof edition and SQLExpress 2005 and have been teaching myself C# using the book

Microsoft Visual C# 2005 step by step.

I have done all the examples including the examples on databases without problems up to chap 27 which is trying to demonstrate adding security to a web site using the ASP.NET Web Site Administration tool.

After opening the tool and clicking on "security" the error message appears.

Unable to connect to SQL server database

As I understand it a database provider AspNetSqlProvider is supposed to create a database called ASPNET.MDF in the App_Data folder of the web site. Needless to say nothing is produced.

I have read various posts and done the following without success.

1 explicitly stated servr.exe as an exception in windows firewall

2 Run Aspnet_regsql at the command prompt. It bombs when I try to put a database name into the list box or even just click on the list box to see what it reveals. ( unfortunately I do not have the exact error but it sugested that it did not have read/write access to something

3 Added the following to my web.config

<configuration xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/.NetConfiguration/v2.0">

<appSettings/>

<connectionStrings>

<remove name="LocalSqlServer" />

<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=localhost;initial catalog=.Northwind;integrated security=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

</connectionStrings>

I do not really understand this . I am just an old fashioned amateur C++ programmer who thought he better get into the new world!

I get the following error trying to use ASP.NET configuration

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

If I try to run the application it starts up OK but it bombs when you try to put a password in because the database in App_Data has not been created.

What am I doing wrong?

Exception (Unable To Connect To SQL Server Database).

Jul 4, 2006

hi... i am new to ASP2.0 and i was trying to use the properties associated with the profile class.
here what i was trying to do...
in "Web.config"
<anonymousIdentification enabled="true"/>
     <profile enabled ="true">
         <properties>
            <add name="p1" allowAnonymous ="true"/>
          </properties>
   </profile>
in "Default.aspx.cs"
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
   if (!Page.IsPostBack) {
       Profile.p1 = "Welcome";
      LabelResult.Text = Profile.p1;
   }
   else{
      Profile.p1 = "you'v been here";
      LabelResult.Text = Profile.p1;
   }
}
but i had the exception ( Unable to connect to SQL Server database) at  "App_Code.qzomymsu.0.cs"
public virtual string p1 {
get {
      return ((string)(this.GetPropertyValue("p1")));
}
set {
      this.SetPropertyValue("p1", value);
}
}
i know the problem has something to do with providers, and i want to store the values to an XML file.... thank you for helping.
