Unable To Connect With Local Db Though My Asp.net App, Error: 40
Oct 23, 2006
Hi all,
I having problems connecting to my local database through my asp.net site. I'm able to connect to the database using Query Analyzer with the following connection properties:
Server: local
Sql Server Authentication: checked
User Name: sa
and the Password is left blank
This is the connection string i'm using on the website:
Data Source=local;Initial Catalog=myDatabaseName;User ID=sa;Password=;
This is the error i'm getting:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

Hi
I had Sql Server 2005 installed on a machine of mine and was able to connect to the local, however I had to unistall it. Recently I put it back on the machine and found that I was no longer able to connect to the local server.
Does anyone know why this has happened and how it can be resolved?
Thanks

I have an interesting problem. I am running xp pro and when I try to connect to an instance of SQL2005 running on WIN2003 using SQL Sevrer Management Studio, I get the following error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
This instance is protected by a vpn and is running on a clustered environment. I can connect to other SQL2000 servers that are running on a clustered environment and SQL2005 that is not clustered.
After adding a host file entry, I was able to connect to the server using OSQL. I was able to telnet into the port the server is listening on.
Others in my group can connect to the server using SQL Server Management Studio with no problems. They are running Win2003 Server. I originally could connect to this server, but I needed to change my password. After that I lost my remote connectivity. I can RDP into the server and map drives to the server. I map to a local administrator of this machine.
I am not sure what else to try?
Help.

I've noticed at least five other posts on the web with this problem with no solutions given. Seems there are MANY people with this particular problem--hint:Microsoft Pay Attention. Help!
When installing SP2 for SQL Server 2005 I get this error message:
MSI (s) (E0!68) [09:02:25:673]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) -- Error 29512. SQL Server Setup was unable add user OUR-LAN-DOMAINOUR-SERVICE-ACCOUNT to local group OUR-LAN-DOMAINSQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$OUR-DATABASE-SERVER-NAME$MSSQLSERVER.
The error message seems to contradict itself: it says "local group" which seems to me to mean the group on the database server itself YET the group name is prefixed with our LAN domain name. So which one is it?
Also, I'm not sure if this message means there is a problem in Active Directory or in the security model of SQL Server itself. I don't think it means SQL Server itself because I don't think SQL Server has groups... it only has Roles, right?
We looked in Active Directory and the user above does indeed exist in the domain-level group mentioned.
Please help!

I have loaded NT4 onto a machine with 256MB's of ram. I have put on SP6 and the hard drive is 80GB's in size. I then loaded in SQL Server 6.5 and set up my default database at 250MB's in size. I can ping all other computers on the network and they can ping me but when I try to register the database it give me a unable to connect error. This is the 10004 error. The error is Execomm and it says the DBPROCESS is dead. I guess thats cause it won't connect. The Sqlserver is running and so is the sqlexecutive running.
Help, Help, Help.

Hi,
I am trying to connect to SQL Server through Query Analyzer but getting following error: (SQL Server is at remote web server where i have my website hosted.)
Unable to connect to server [server IP]:
Server: Msg 6, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][dbnetlib] Specified SQL server not found.
I have searched this forum for this error and performed following workaround as suggested in some threads-
1. checked and set "TcpPort" registry setting.
2. TCP/IP is enabled in Network Utility.
3. "start SQL server if it is stoped" checkbox is unchecked while connecting.
But, I am still getting the above error. Should i re-installed SQL Server 2000? Any help?
Thanks,

Hi to everyone!
Here is my problem: I have SQLEXPRESS running with Windows Authentication on a "server" PC named "ASUS1", and I need to connect from a "client" PC named "Presario1", user "Mauro", connected through a peer network (I use a cross-over cable); both PCs belongs to the same workgroup named "RMT-WORK", and they can see each others shared folders without problems.
I have installed the connectivity components + Management Studio Express on Presario1, and enabled named pipes and TCP/IP protocols; then I've got SQL Browser running. I have also added the Login "Guest" on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS.
When I start Management Studio Express on Presario1 and browse for servers I can select "ASUS1" as database engine but when I try to connect I receive "Error 40: could not open a connection to SQL Server" (same result using SQLCMD); I have tried to add on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS a user "Presario1Mauro" with "CREATE LOGIN [Presario1Mauro] FROM WINDOWS" but I receive a "Windows user not found" error...
Can anyone help me?

SQL Express running on Server 2003 SP1, not a domain controller - but prior to installing SQL Express, I did dcpromo promote and then demoted it back to a workgroup server.
Connecting with Vista build 5600, Studio express 9.00.2047 with MDAC 6.00.5600.1638. Server 2003 MDAC is 2.82.1830.
I came across this article on the net:
http://www.developersdex.com/sql/message.asp?p=1867&ID=%3C309C7496-F36B-4398-9C52-322E6CB8DE3B%40microsoft.com%3E
Is my mis-matched versions of MDAC causing me this grief?
Otherwise, I have remote set up for TCP and Named Pipes, I've run sp_configure 'remote admin connections', 1; my login is set to SQL Authentication with everything granted. I've tried running the service as network, local and MachineAdministrator; ports are open per:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555585
I wanted to ask before I start replacing the MDAC on either the Vista or Server 2003 machine... If that's the problem, which version(s) do I change? to?
Full error message:

I've installed SQL2005 on a server already running SQL2K on my laptop. SQL2K is the default instance, so I'm trying to connect to SQL2005 using MYSERVERSQL2005 as the instance.
The steps that I've taken are to apply SP2 and enable remote connections (TCP & Named pipes). I've also made sure the SQL Server Browser service is running and enabled.
The error message that I get via SQL2005 client tools is "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)"
I dont understand as to why i am unable to connect to 2005.
Any ideas?

I saw a video on how its possible to create a local database so that when the application is being deployed, the mdf file will be deployed with it and will contain the enter data. The instructor(Beth Messi) showed that all I need to do is to add the .mdf file using the "Rightclick Project name in solution explorer > select add > add new item > then in the dialog that opens, select SQL database and click ok. I did this but the Visual Studio kept saying: "An error occored while extablishing a connection with the server. When connecting SQL Server 2005, this failure may have been caused by the fact that under the default settings of SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (Provider: Shared memory provider, error: 40 - could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
Honestly, I don't know how to go futher with this. The SQL server am using is the professional edition and I have been able to use it through Visual Studio to create Databases. It connects alright in that senario. Please I really need help here.

Today when I try to connect via Management Studio, I get the following error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. I installed it as a default instance.
I recently added a login with dbo privileges. I have tried logging in with that sql account and also with windows authentication to no avail.
Thank you for any help.

I have a SQL Server 2005 instance which resides on a dedicated server hosted by a third party. The connection string I use is formatted as...

The hosting providr claims that the SQL Server configuration settings are as they should be as fars as TCP/IP and Named Pipes are concerned. Does anyone know what might be going on?
