Unable To Open SQL Server Express Database
Aug 19, 2007
Hello,
I have a SQL Express database in a C# project, which I use for unit tests. However, I am getting the "unable to open SQL Express database", access is denied. I used to be able to do use it fine.
I also used to attach it to the SQL Server engine, but now I'm getting access denied there as well. I ensured that it isn't currently attached... at least, I cannot see it, but maybe its still attached somehow?
I don't know what the problem is... running out of ideas.
Thanks.

When I start Management Studio I get the following message and a suggestion to change a setting:
(I can choose to continue and the system databases appear, but the DB I created does not.)
"Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. Cannot create a stable subkey under a volitile parent key."
************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.
Any assistance is appreciated.

I have a SQL Server 2005 database file (a .mdf file) that I am trying to open in SQL Server Management Studio so I can add a field to a table, but I am unable to open the file. I can't say that I really understand how SQL Server handles these databases. I especially don't understand the "attaching" and "detaching" operations.
I am working in VB.Net 2008 now, but my background is with VB6 using the JET engine. It was just so straightforward using the JET engine, but seems so much more complicated with SQL Server. I am trying to use .mdf files the same way I used .mdb files. I want my application to find the database file, "attach to it", and let me manipulate it.
At one time I was able to open my database in Sql Server Management Studio and edit the design of the database. The application still works but I am no longer able to modify the database because I cannot attach to it in Management Studio.
Here is a big clue: the files are no longer in the special folder anymore, which is c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATA. I might have deleted the files, stupidly, thinking they were redundant. I still have the .mdf file (and the _log.ldf file) on my hard drive and the application can still open it, but when I try to use Management Studio to attach to the .mdf file, I get this error:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
An error occurred when attaching the database(s). Click the hyperlink in the Message column for details.
here are the details:
Unable to open the physical file "c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATAHEALSExamsSQL.mdf". Operating system error 2: "2(The system cannot find the file specified.)". (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
Indeed the file is not there, but why is Mgmt Studio looking there? Why doesn't it just open the file where it is? What can I do to get it back? I even copied the files to c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATA? I get the same error.
Here is another clue: In Management Studio, when I right-click Databases, and chose Attach, it brings up a dialog. There I click "Add" to get another dialog in which I will select a database, but before the dialog appears I get this error:
Locate Database Files - KURANT-WIN7SQLEXPRESS
C:UsersJason KurantDesktop
Cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists.
If you know that the service account can access a specific file, type in the full path for the file in the File Name control in the Locate dialog box.

area cofiguration using tcp/ip only. But when i browse the reportserver i got the below mentioned error.
The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. (rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable)
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. Well, I'm to the point of giving up. If there was a 1-800 # that charged $400 /minute for support at this point I would pay it! I have been developing an ASP.net 2.0 web application that basically has login security. I have been struggling to get this thing to work. On my local machine it works fine, but when I copy the code (including the ASPNETDB.mdf that is in the APP_Data directory) over to a web server, I get to the login screen but when I attempt to login I get an error. I've tried using the SSEUTIL.exe and was unsuccessful. At this point I don't even know where to start. Can someone please help me??? The error is listed below:

Hi all,
I'm new to .NET and VB2008 and trying to write my first database application. It runs fine on my development PC (Vista) but I decided to publish/install an early beta to my daughters XP computer and am getting an error reading: Unable to open database.
The CD drive on that pc has been giving us trouble so I deployed to a subdirectory on the dev pc and moved those files to a thumbdrive, copied to the same subdirectory on client pc and installed from there. I've installed it more than once, trying different paths for the installed version hoping that was the issue but have hit a wall. Can anybody help?
Thanks,
Dominic

I've been using my DotNetNuke database for weeks on my local PC with SQL Server Express. It attaches as a "User Instance". Basically, I am using all the DotNetNuke defaults. Today I decided to attach the DotNetNuke database in SQL Server Management Studio Express and peek at the tables. I attached the database; then I detached it when I was done. This all went well. But when I tried to open my DotNetNuke web site again I now get a message that it cannot connect. Attaching and detaching the database in SQL Server Management Studio obviously changed something about the database, but I don't know what. My connection string to the database has not changed.
The specific error displayed in the browser is:
ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider
In event viewer is this message:
Exception information:
Exception type: SqlException
Exception message: Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
My connection string is this:
<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
Any suggestions about how I can correct this?

Hi,
I'm developing a windows forms app with a local database to be deployed on a couple of users machines. To aid deployment I'm using 'user instance' with a connection string of:
Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|gma.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;Connection Timeout=15;
I've started with a backup function based on the blog 'Backup and Restore with User Instance' linked to from this forum. Problem is I always get the error message 'Cannot open user default database. Login failed for user xxx'. This happens when I run in debugger or just run the exe directly.
Any help appreciated.

Hi,
I had some issues on my server and had to uninstall .Net Framework 2.0, SQL Server 2005 Express, and SQL Express Toolkit. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and it seemed to be ok.
Then my problems all started when I tried to install SQL Express Toolkit because I needed to install DTS Wizard again, and it errors out and wouldn't let me install it. So I uninstalled everything that's listed above again.
I then tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express again, and on the second from last screen, while its listing all the components and configuring them, I get the following error as it's configuring the last component... which was the SQL Server Database Services.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
-----------------------------------------------------------
The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
I tried to re-install the SQL Server Express another 7 times wth no luck.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bill

I've tried everything I've read that seemed applicable but still have a problem with the same error message, cannot open user default database.
This started detaching the database.
I'm using this connection string:
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;GC_CashBook.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"
It's a WinForms application.
When I run in debug mode, I connect fine. I can do anything in the db in VisualStudio 2005.
Then I open the SQL Management Studio, connect to Sql Express, try to open the same database and it can't open it.
BUT...
If I stop running the VisualStudio application (I can leave VS open, but not run the app I'm developing),
and reopen SQL Management Studio, connect to Sql Express and open the same db, I can do anything.
It's not just VS and SQL either.
If I open CodeSmith and load a template I use that access the db, I can run my templates fine as long as I'm not running the application in VS or have the db open in SQL Express.
In other words, I can have one connection at a time only on this sql express db.
Before I detached it, I could have multiple connections at the same time.
I checked the properties in sql express and it says I can have multiple (4 is specified) connections at a time;
Allow remote access is also checked.
Arrow/Rick is db owner, the default database is Master.
I don't know any other information to provide.
DId I miss something? How can I get multiple connections working again on this?
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi!
I'm trying to connect a DB in SQL express with a program in VB.NET Express. I'm using the Data Source Configuration Wizzard. When I select the file (.mdf), the following message appears:
Unable to open the physical file "path to my file". Operating system error 5: "5(error not found)".
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file 'myFile' failed. A database with the same name exists, or secified file cannot be opened, or it is located in UNC share.
I'm using the Windows authentication for this, but if I try with the sa user, I get the following message:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance. The connection will be closed.
Any ideas to solve this?
Thanks
Jose Israel

Hi all.I am using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as a database.I put below code to connect to my database at my Page_Load event. Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
'Put user code to initialize the page here
Dim conn As sqlConnection
conn = New SqlConnection("server=SEN-M092082D001SQLEXPRESS;database=test;Trusted_Connection=Yes")
conn.open()
lblItem.Text = "Connection Opened!"
End SubAnd, I got an error when running this code. Error is:Cannot open database "test" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'SEN-M092082D001ASPNET' Which the error points to Conn.Open. Why this happen? Do I need to configure something at the SQL Server ?

I can't seem to open my SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP anymore. I need help figuring this out. I was able to open it before.
I went to the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and tried to "repair" the program but nothing changes. Anytime I double-click on ssmsee.exe, the hour-glass flashes, but the program never starts. Any ideas why?
The last thing I loaded was the AdventureWorksBI.msi. I already downloaded and installed AdventureWorksDB.msi.
I have Windows 2000 Pro, I have SQL Server 2005 Express loaded, among other 2005 Express programs. No other problems.
Any clues?
I am sure that whatever the correct is to newbievsprogrammer's post at http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=295166&SiteID=1 will also relate to mine as I can't seem to connect to any database either.

Hi Guys, how many connections does sql 2005 express allow to .mdf file. I stumpled on info on a microsoft site (actually a forum post on msdn) that sql server express allows only a single connection to an .mdf file.
Iam intrested in this because i developed reporting services reports in BIS and iam having problems. If i run a report from report manager, i have to wait for close to 20 minutes before i can be able to run my asp.net application agian. Else if i insert data or retrieve data from my asp.net application, then i have to wait again for 20 minutes or more before i can be able to run my reports else i will get an error that a connection can not be made to the database or that the database is being used by another process.
So in all cases, i have to wait for 20--30 minutes before a connection can be made to the .mdf file. i.e after running a report or after inserting or retrieving data from the database through my asp.net application.
Iam using sql sever 2005 express with advanced services and visual web developer on windows server 2003.
Any ideas or help.

Hello all.
I have uploaded a table into sql management studio express. However, when I right click on the table and try and open it, I get an error message saying;
"SQL Execution Error.
Executed SQL statement: select columnName1, columnName2 etc....
Error source: Microsoft. VisualStudio.DataTools
Error Message: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation"
Because of this error, I cannot manually edit the table. However, when I write a query running select * from Table X, the table does appear that way.
Any help regarding how to open the table would be very much appreciated!!

So I download the Visual Web Developer Express version, and SQL Server 2005 Express along with it. Installed both of them, along with the new Atlas component, and headed over to www.asp.net to start some of the tutorials. I choose one of the Atlas how-tos, and the first thing it has me do is make a new SQL DB from the web developer.
I attempt to do so and get the following error message:
An error occurred while processing the local data file: Key not valid for use in specified state.
A database_log.ldf file is created beneath the db icon, but any attempt to open it results in an error.
Under the Database Explorer window, the usernamesqlexpress.pubs.dbo is marked as not working, and when I attempt to refresh it, I get an error message saying that the requested operation was stopped because a System.Exception was thrown. Looking in the Sql Config Manager, I notice that the SQL Server is running, but not the browser.
Any help is appreciated.
