Subquery In DTS No Longer Works After Years
Oct 13, 2006Hi folks,A DTS package we have run for years now no longer works. The specificpart that is not working is a subquery in the SOURCE object of atransformation. The source is based on a Microsoft Data Link to aSybase database (DSN changed a couple months ago but the connectionstring was updated successfully for the new 12.51 version of ASE) andthe destination is a link to a local SQL Server 2000 database.The transformation has always worked and when I remove the subqueryeverything works OK. Mar 12, 2015I have a process that keeps check on the row counts of about 100 stored procedures. The input parameters and "certified" row counts for all of the stored procedures are stored in a database. The process runs every day and executes all of the stored procedures using the parameters from the database with syntax below. The row count returned is compared against the known "certified" row count. If the counts are different, we receive an email alerting us that something has changed with the data or the sp query.
(This code is dynamically generated for all 100 + stored procedures)

This worked well until I upgraded from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2014. Evidently Microsoft fixed this for me. The error below is now received anytime we attempt to execute a stored procedure with dynamic SQL through OPENQUERY.
The metadata could not be determined because statement 'EXEC (@sql_str)' in procedure 'usp_HR_My_Stored_Procedure ' contains dynamic SQL. Consider using the WITH RESULT SETS clause to explicitly describe the result set.
The stored procedures that are monitored change frequently, so it isn't reasonable to create tables with fixed column structures for all for all of the stored procs.
IBM Universe Database
Nov 27, 2006My company has an IBM Universe database that i would like to connect to via SSIS. Is this possible? If so, please point me in the right direction. I managed to find the U2 tools on the IBM website but i am a bit confused as to what i need to do.

Linked Server: Works Local, But Not Remote
Nov 14, 2007I have created a linked server (to an AS/400) via MSDASQL. It works fine when I execute queries locally (i.e. from Management Studio running on the SQL 2005 server).
However, when I execute a query from a remote machine I get an error (see below for the exact message).
I know the ODBC connection is between the SQL server and the AS/400, and that the remote client does not have connectivity to the AS/400. But shouldn't the SQL server be able to pass the query through to the linked server even if the query is initiated from a remote machine?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can resolve this problem so that queries against the linked server can be executed from remote machines?
Errors:
OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "MERCURY" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed".
OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "MERCURY" returned message "[IBM][iSeries Access ODBC Driver]Key value in connection string too long.".

Access Linked Server: Works In SQL2000 But Not SQL2005

Linked Server Errors After Failover But Works When It Is Failed Back
Feb 15, 2008We are using SQL Server 2005 (9.0.3054 on Windows 2003 RC2 SP2 with clustering two instances. We are running an instance on both boxes.
I have 2 linked servers to the same server on the first box (SQL1C) that use different SQL Logins to connect to the same box but to different databases. One uses the name of the server and one uses the name of the server with a 2 at the end of it. (servername and servername2). The second linked server was added recently and is used very frequently by the new application. The other thing is there is a server with the name servername2. They are SQL boxes but I am not sure what version or what they are running on. If it turns out to be important, I will ask.
Here's what is happening:
When we fail over to the second box, up until recently, we had no problems. All linked servers worked well. But since we have added this new linked server, when we fail over, the linked server no longer works and we get an error like from the Cold Fusion application:
[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
I got a similar error in EMS, but did not copy it to save it. Since this is a production server, I can't really just try things.
We checked to make sure all IPs from box1 and box2 are allowed access to the server and they are not using IP blocking for inside the university domain.
There are no errors in the SQL Logs. I checked the application logs and found no errors for the linked server. The only error I could find and I didn't think it was related but I will include it was this:
Closed event notification conversation endpoint with handle '{4F54167A-F3D0-DC11-97FE-000E0CB2D7CA}', due to the following error: '<?xml version="1.0"?><Error xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/Error"><Code>-8470</Code><Description>Remote service has been dropped.</Description></Error>'.
Any ideas? One of our pplications goes down when the cluster fails over now. Help PLEASE!

Telnet Connection Works, Sql Cmd Connection Works, SQL Server Managment Studio 2005 Does Not
Jun 20, 2007I'm having a strange problem with this but I know (and admit) that the problem is on my PC and nowhere else. My firewall was causing a problem because I was unable to PING the database server, switching this off gets a successful PING immediately. The most useful utility to date is running netstat -an in the command window. This illustrates all the connections that are live and ports that are being listed to. I can establish a connection both by running

Both these utilities show as establishing a connection in netstat so I am able to connect the database server every time, this worked throughout yesterday and has continued this morning.
The problem is when I attempt to use SQL Server Management Studio. When I attempt to connect to tcp:sql5.hostinguk.net, 1433 nothing shows in netstat at all. There is an option to encrypt the connection in the connection properties tab in management studio, when I enable this I do get an entry in netstat -an, see below:

Amost as if it's trying the different ports but you get this time_wait thing. The error message is more meaningful and hopefull because I get:
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I would expect this as the DNS has not been advised to encrypt the conection.
This is much better than the : Login failed for user 'COX10289'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) that I get, irrespective of whether I enter a password or not.
This is on a XP machine trying to connect to the remote webhosting company via the internet.
I can ping the server
I have enabled shared memory and tcp/ip in protocols, named pipes and via are disabled
I do not have any aliases set up
No I do not force encryption
I wonder if you have any further suggestions to this problem?
Setting Up SQL 2005 Linked Server Connecting To A DB2 Database

I have setup a linked server to a DB2 database using "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers",
the connections works fine i am able to run select queries.
but the number of rows returned from the two following statements are different.
select * from linkedserver...tablename
select count(*) from linkedserver...tablename
e.g. The First statement returns 116 rows, whereas the second query returns count as 144....
I am a bit confused ?????
could anybody think of any possible reasons..

Linked Server Problem From SQL 2005 To SQL 2000 Database
May 8, 2006I have been unable to get my linked server to work when running queries against it in SQL Server 2005.
Example SQL Statement on my SQL 2005 server that I'm trying to run:

Error Message:

Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists.

The user sqladmin definitely has the right permissions to the right databases on the target linked server.
Configuring A Linked Microsoft Access Database On SQL Server 2005

- Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition running on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
- Client Service for Netware installed.
- Access 2000 database in a Novell Directory Services (NDS) Environment
- SQL Server service running under local Administrator account.
Linked server configured as follow:
Linked server: MyDB
Provider: Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider
Product name: Access 2000
Data Source: UNC path to my Access database
Security: Admin with no password (default Access behaviour)
I can connect to my access database by following the next steps:
- Open Management studio on the SQL Server itself (where I'm logged in as Administrator)
- Connect using Windows Authentication (Administrator)
- Create a new query, run EXEC sp_tables_ex 'MyDB'
This will return all the tables from the Access database.
I can also make a view pointing to MyDB...MyTable.
Enough prove to me It can work....
So far so good
But now the tricky part.
When I login as 'sa', I can't connect and will receive the following message:
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "MyDB" returned message "'Full UNC to my access database' is not a valid path. Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides.".Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_tables_ex, Line 41Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "MyDB".
(In real life I want to connect to my SQL 2005 Server from a ASP.NET (2.0) application using SQL authentication, but as long as I can't get the above working this is not important for now)
Upgraded XP And My MSSQL 2005 No Longer Login ID / Can't Start Server

I upgraded my XP and when attempting to restart my web site using MSSQL 2005 my login credentials were not recognised. Now, the Databse does not want to start and I can not login to check error logs. I have enclosed the error message that I am experiencing.

We just upgraded to SQL Server 2005 from SQL Server 2000. The DB was backed up using Enterprise Manager and restored with SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP. Everything went as expected (no errors, warnings, or any other indicator of problems).
The DB resides in a DB Server (Server1) and the application we are running is a Client/Server system where the AppServer resides on Server2.
During the application's operation all read, create, and delete transactions work fine but no update works. When viewing details in Trace Log I see this message after attempting any update:
Could not find server 'Server1' in sysservers. Execute sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers. (7202)

I was able to connect Linked Servers, but I cannot point to a specific database in a Linked Server, also, I cannot rename Linked Server's name.
How to point the linked server to a specific database? How to rename the Linked Server?

Adding A New Record Takes Longer And Longer -- Archive? (was Table Help)
Mar 1, 2005Hi we have a table with about 400000 records in it. It starting to take longer and longer to add a new record. I was thinking of creating another identical table and archiving off most of the records every month (we are now adding about about 4000 records a day) . Is this the best thing to do?

Three Instances Only One Works, Sql Server 2005 ... Help Please!!!
Aug 19, 2007I just installed sql server 2005 and trying to pick it up before I start a new job as a developer using sql server 2005. The problem is that I have three instances installed, the one that works was installed prior to installing sql server 2005 when I installed System Architect a CASE tool which utilizes sql server for its encyclopedias.
My initial installed I used the default settings with the default instance and that does not work. I later ran set up again and installed another instance and that does not work. For some apparent reason the POKIN10SQL instance is over riding everything rendering every other instance non-functional.
When I try to connect to the one of the other instances, the error message is
"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connection to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL does not allow remote connections. (Provider Network Interface, error: 26 - Error locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)"
I don't think the remote connection is the problem as I went into the properties settings and checked the connection settings and allow remote connections is checked.
In terms of locating the instance, I installed SQL Server as specified in the handbook ... with the default instance and then a named instance.
Something seems to be wrong with the POKIN10SQL instance which was installed with System Architect, I need System Architect so I need a work around rather then an uninstall.
Can someone help please?
Package Works In BIDS, But Not In SQL Server 2005
May 3, 2007Most of my packages that I've created in BIDS will NOT run in SQL Server 2005. The simplest one that I have fails during a script task that calls external managed code. I've done all the steps outlined in "Referencing Other Assemblies...", but I'm still getting "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Here's a sample of a script that's having a problem. The line in green is the one that seems to be cause of the error. This is extremely frustrating. This code will even run from a command line console without error. Why is it so difficult to deploy one of these projects with managed code?

I Can No Longer Connect To My SQL Server Express 2005 From Manager Studio Express
Sep 28, 2006Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?

(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) Only .SQEXPRESS that I was able to connect to... i've tried the solution from Microsoft, opened SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration and enabled "Local and remote connections", checked the option "Using both TCP/IP and named pipes" but it didn't help. Feb 4, 2008 The following code is taking longer and longer to run. I am not talking about the gradualy increase in size. this job has been taking 30-40 mins normaly and in the last few days it has gone 1hr to 2 hr to 3 hr... ANy ideas why this is happening? sometimes the sa password is set correctly, while other times it is not. There does not appear to be any particular environment or system setting when it fails vs. when it works.
We are coming up on a release date and this is causing us a serious problem. Can anyone help?

SQL 2005 Installation: Can No Longer Network Print

This is a very bizzare one. I have installed SQL many times and never had this problem. I had a user self install SQL 2005, as it turns out, he installed the wrong components, so a co-worker uninstalled it for him. We followed the support doc for the uninstall, because we had errors when tried to remove it.

After, we were able to re-install (we installed this time via the command line), but for some odd reason we have completely lost the ability to print to ANY network printer. I didn't think this was possible, but I tried it on my machine and now I too am unable to print!
A couple of details:
Both machines:
XP-SP2
HP dx7400
Printers: a variety of HP Networked Printers (can't print to any)
I have added and removed the printers multiple times and tried adding via a local port... no luck
There is no error in the event log
If I try to print a test page, I get an error box that says "Test Page Failed to Print"
Since there are no real errors for the print issue, I am struggling to find a solution. Has anyone ever seen this??

VMark UniVerse Driver (ODBC) And Unnamed Parameters
Jun 9, 2006In a Data Flow task, my data source is the VMark UniVerse ODBC Driver. I have question marks in my SQL Command. I have two variables set up in the task (intended) to provide values to those unnamed parameters. Here is the important portion of that command:

How do I tell SSIS to use the variables as the source for the values of the two unnamed parameters? I get a "Wrong number of input parameters to SQL statement" error when I try to run the package.
I see how to do it in the Execute SQL Task (there is a Parameter Mapping page), but I don't see a similar page anywhere in the data flow task.

I have a simple report.
I want the user to pick a year and month (or a year-month), enter a integer for the number of months to review, and display a report from that year-month to the selected year-month.
I'm using MDX so I tried the LAG function. In order to use the lag function with a parameter you have to define a parameter in the data set. In order to define a parameter in the dataset you have to use an existing dimenstion. I don't have a dimenstion for "number of months to roll back" so I pick a dimenstion at random. Of course now I can't use the parameter I created because RS thinks it's not an integer. You'd think RS would give you the ability to define the parameter type in the data set. Naw....Microsoft knows better. You can define the Report Parameter data type but, naturally, that doesn't apply.
So I can't use the LAG function - you know - the easiest way to accomplish the report.
So I'll create an inclusive range parameter in my dataset using year-month. The user can select the "to" year-month and I'll write a custom code snippet to subtract the rollback months and create the "from" year-month. I can do this without much problem and it works fine in a text box in the report body. Naturally, now that I WANT the "from" parameter to reset whenever the "to" parameter changes (which is above it in the parameter list) - it doesn't.
I guess I can try putting the simple report into a subreport and passing it the parameters I've created. It seems to be a LONG, LONG and VERY winding road to accomplish a simple task.

Deadlock Alert (message ID 1205) No Longer Able To Be Logged In 2005

In SQL Server 2000 you could run the piece of code below, to enable the logging of a deadlock in the SQL Server error log. Which could then be used to fire an alert, and then kick of an Agent job to send an SMTP email alert.

The error message logged was a nice simple one liner, like this:
Transaction (Process ID 57) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.
Now I work for a managed SQL Server company, and a large number of our clients used our alerting for deadlocking to tune their applications, or at a minimum to show them when something was wrong with the database due to sudden rise in the number of deadlocks.
However, in SQL Server 2005, the functionality for the sp_alertmessage procedure has been changed so that you can't update any message id less than 50,000. Which comes inline with the secure engine that Microsoft have designed.
But this now means you can no longer enable the logging for deadlock message ID 1205. Which in turn means no alerting can be enabled.
You can still log information by enabling the necessary trace flags, however that logs very verbose information about the deadlocking chain, which in turn can quickly blow the size of the error logs out.
What I would love to see is this functionality returned in SQL Server 2008, or at least an alternative so that only minimum information is logged initially for a deadlock, and alerting can be setup.
Also, for those of you who have read through the 2005 BOL, about deadlocking, although it states the following in the section on deadlocking:
"...The 1205 deadlock victim error records information about the threads and resources involved in a deadlock in the error log.€?
This isn't the case, unless you enable some trace flags, which as mentioned will give you a whole lot of information, which although is valuable, isn't ideal if you're wanting day to day deadlock tracking.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Have you struck this as well? Do you think this should be something that shouldn't have been removed from 2000?

Log Shipping Alert Firing For Database That No Longer Exists
Nov 8, 2006I have an error 14421 (database has restore threshold for 45 minutes and has not restored in more than "so many" minutes)firing for a database that no longer exists. How can I remove this alert? I have other log shipping plans that are running and so I can't delete the Log shipping alert job.

Feb 22, 2008Why does it take longer and longer for the same code to run very simply I have 8,0000,000 records I want to delete from a table . I have tried a few options
Option 1 a while loop which deletes 10,000 rows per loop starting from the earliest until it hits the cut of number I have set. THIS TOOK 5 HOURS
Option 2 created an SP which found the oldest 100,000 records then deleted them. If I run this SP manually it takes 30 €“ 60 secs. Which I thought was much better than above. So I put this SP in a while loop to run 80 odd times thinking the time it would take would be 80 mins a huge improvement.
But every time this SP is called it takes longer and longer (36,30,32,39,37,37,123,163,155,182€¦and so on(In seconds)).
All the sp is doing is as follows(8860000 is just to insure I don€™t delete to much). this sp is then called from in a while loop.
