I was trying to restore a transaction log when I got this.
What does this mean? I can't find anything by Googling on the
'fixed' parts of the message.
The file 'xx' cannot be moved by this RESTORE operation
I'm running SQL Server 6.5 (SP5a) on an NT4 server (SP3). I am using the Outlook Express account for SQLExecutiveCmdExec
which has all the requisite permissions. SQL Executive as well as SQL Server services are logging in under this account.
The server seems to be functioning normally in every other way (there's no production data on it yet).
When attempting to start SQL Main, the following lines appear in the Errorlog

MSKB Does not have any information on this error message. Can anyone provide some insight as to what's going on please?
P.S. I have another server running SQL Mail with the same configuration with no problem.

I have scheduled a database backup at 9 pm and 5 Transaction Log backups. The transaction Log backups happen at 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm and 5 pm (device does not get initialized) and one at 11 pm where i initialize the backup device. now i have another server with the same database on it. I restore these backups on to this server by simple copying the files and then doing Restore ...From Device...Add file...option. I am able to restore the DB backup but when i try to restore the log backups it get the error msg -
'Specified file 'G:...' is out of sequence. current time stamp is Feb 9 2000 3:54 pm while dump was from Feb 9 2000 3 pm.'
When i am restoring the logs i start from the 1st backup buyt still i get this error. Can someone pls let me know what the problem is and how to resolve it. Thanks.
I did a full backup of a db from one server(Express2005) and trying to restore it to a different instance of SQL2005 on the same development machine. (Also had some fulltext columns if that means anything)
Many failures but finally got it to report all was successful except the icon in Object Explorer shows (Restoring...) with no indication of any real activity going on. It's a tiny database with hardly any data in it.
Just not sure what the heck is going on there. It also won't let me into the database until this the (Restoring...) goes away.
Any advice on how to get this thing finished out?

I'm getting this when executing the code below. Going from W2K/SQL2k SP4 to XP/SQL2k SP4 over a dial-up link.
If I take away the begin tran and commit it works, but of course, if one statement fails I want a rollback. I'm executing this from a Delphi app, but I get the same from Qry Analyser.
I've tried both with and without the Set XACT . . ., and also tried with Set Implicit_Transactions off.

I am restoring database from Transaction Logs. I followed all the steps
mentioned in the book. Just before the last step there are three options
1. Leave Database Operational. No Additional Logs can be Restored.
2. Leave Database Nonoperational But Able to Restore Additional
Transaction Logs.
3. Leave Database Read_Only And Able To Restore Additional Transaction Logs.
Option 2 and 3 aresupposed to set on the NORECOVERY flag.
I tried both options 2, and 3 , But still got messages that I did not
specify WITH NORECOVERY or WITH STANDBY.
Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

I am trying to restore a set of transactions logs on my SQL server and I keep getting the following error 'The preceding restore operation did not specify with NO RECOVERY or WITH STANDBY. Restart the restore sequence, specifying WITH NORECOVERY or WITH STANDBY for all but the final step. RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally.
Can someone please show me how to properly restore a set of backup logs with specifying the required recovery option?

I have a huge transactional table in sql server 2005 database which is updated very frequently. By mistake some update was on the table, which updated all the records in the table. Now I want to restore the table using Transaction log (as log maintains all the transactions). I dont have any backups available.How can I restore my database using transaction log. please suggest me the steps.

I cannot restore a backup file of the transaction log without getting the following message:
ODBC SQL State: 42000
The preceding restore operation did not specify WITH NORECOVERY or WITH STANDBY. Restart the restore sequence, specifying WITH NORECOVERY or WITH STANDBY for all but the final step.
I have tried to do this in Enterprise manager and with the following script with the same results:
RESTORE Log TestDB
FROM DISK='D:MSSQL7BACKUPMMTrans'
WITH NORECOVERY

Just went through migrating to SQL 2005 as well and we have a need to apply log shipping between SQL 2000 and SQL 2005. Well not shipping per say in the automated fashion that SQL 2005 offers but rather we need to apply SQL 2000 transaction logs to a SQL 2005 instance. Though the database is still in SQL 2000 version 80 and the secondary database needs to be available in read only. (STANDBY MODE)
When I attempt to restore either a FULL backup or transaction log I get the error:
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. This backup cannot be restored using WITH STANDBY because a database upgrade is needed. Reissue the RESTORE without WITH STANDBY
The only way I could restore the FULL was by using the WITH RECOVERY OR NORECOVERY option during the restore process. The issue with this is I need the database in standby by mode in order to continue to append transaction logs.
Anybody have any thoughts how I might be able to get around this?

I am new to this environment and was asked to ensure that the transaction log shipping for SQL 2005 on W2K3 boxes is working properly. I noticed the db's on the secondary server are show "Restoring..." I am not sure if these were set up in No Recover Mode or Standby Mode. I have no access to the secondary db's. I get an error message when trying to access them (error 927). Monitoring was not set up initially and as you may or may not know can't be turned on after the fact...unless you delete the job and start over.
My question is is "Restoring..." normal and what does it indicate?

I have crl stored procedure with distributed transaction in it. I really need such transaction. When a poison message occurs 5 time my queue is turned off.
I've read about handling poison messages in msdn (save transaction and rollback part of it), but it works only with local transaction. What should I do?
An important point is that messages shoold be processed in right order, I can't receive message and put it to the end of queue.
I want to try process poison message constantly.
I doesn't want to stop receiving messages in that queue.

We had a siutation last night in our production environment that forced us to revert back to an earlier version of the database (before a major code rollout that failed). After restoring the days full backup (with NORECOVERY), and then restoring a DIFF backup (FULL RECOVERY and had checked Preserve Replication Settings)...the transaction replication failed.

I've tried reinitializing the publication/subscription and while that took brand new snapshots and copied it over to the replicated data server, it did not fix the problem.I read from a different post that I could try running "sp_replrestart" but that ran for about a half an hour and didn't appear to do anything but fill up our log files...did I not wait long enough?
The only thing I know to do at this point is to drop the publication on the production server and rebuild it completely (and with all the tables we're replicating that would take quite a bit of time.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst, I can not change the data structure. I have a table called codesubsections that has an identity as the primary key. When a new codesubsection is entered the user can mark a formercodesubsection as a parent. The problem is that I need to be able to evaluate the table and identify the lowest CodeSubsectionID for a given row. so for instant when I look at row 7 it's text is 17 B p2 but because the CodeSubSectionID is not null I need to look at 6 then 5 and since 5 is null I need the text for 5,6,7 all to be 16:1 B. The only solution I have had any kind of luck with is to do a self join 3 times and coalesce the values up. See the code at the end. I am at my wits end, I had it working the other way assuming that the CodeSubSectionID was the parent of the record. This is the final piece of code on a project that is supposed to end tomorrow.
Any help is appreciated. I would normally post the procedures but I think that they are more confusing that the data explanation. This type of relationship is a first for me after 20 some years.

I have an File System Task that copies a file from one directory ot another. When I hard code the target directory (c:dirfile.txt) it works fine. When I change it to a virtual directory (\serverdirfile.txt) I get a security error:

Where do I change the security settings?

We're trying to construct a query that deletes records containing 48 particular phone numbers from a large db. The 48 numbers are the entire contents of a smaller db, in a field of the same name as in the larger db (home_phone). We're using Sequel Server 7.0 and Access 97. The db's are in Access now. We failed in Acess and now would like to import into sql and try it there.

I'm trying to use an XML Task to do a simple XSLT operation, but it fails with this error message:
[XML Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "There are multiple root elements. Line 5, position 2.".
The source XML file validates fine and I've successfully used it as the XML Source in a data flow task to load some SQL Server tables. It has very few line breaks, so the first 5 lines are pretty long: almost 4000 characters, including 34 start-tags, 19 end-tags, and 2 empty element tags. Here's the very beginning of it:

I'm receiving the below error when trying to implement Execute SQL Task.
"The ROLLBACK TRANSACTION request has no corresponding BEGIN TRANSACTION." This error also happens on COMMIT as well and there is a preceding Execute SQL Task with BEGIN TRANSACTION tranname WITH MARK 'tran'
I know I can change the transaction option property from "supported" to "required" however I want to mark the transaction. I was copying the way Import/Export Wizard does it however I'm unable to figure out why it works and why mine doesn't work.
Anyone know of the reason?
For my website, I need to grab information from sources located on different servers. This will give me me various datasets that I need to combine into one, main dataset to then bind to my grid. Each dataset has the following fields:
Name || Blocked
I need the main dataset that is to be used on the grid to have the following structure:
Name || Blocked 1 || Blocked 2 || Blocked 3 || etc.......
The name field I can take from one of the datasets as the list of fields will be the same. However, I need to take the data from each of the blocked fields in the various datasets that are returned and then combine them to be the Blocked 1, etc columns that you can see above.
I'm making this post to ask for any advice on the best way to do this. Any info would be most appreciated.

I recently renamed a database with sp_renamedb and created a new db with the same name as the old and restored the data into the new db. I put the old renamed db in single user mode to prevent data from becomming violated. After cycling SQL Server to flush the cache, I opened the floodgates for users. Our support line was full of calls from people saying "I'm getting the error 'Single User Mode in database DBORGINALDBNAME'. Any ideas why the application would be hitting the old database after I renamed and recycled the server?

The problem is that when I try to extract from the source table, I get the following error:

It would have been nice if it could tell me what columns it was having trouble with. Anyway, I figured it out. There are two columns called time_open and time_close that contain times but no dates. This is how the source columns are configured:

This is a really old database. We started using it about 14 years ago. I can get an ODBC connection to it fine with any application except SQL Server. So, I have to do an OPENROWSET to get access to the data.
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('MSDASQL', 'Connection String Stuff', 'select * from dacom.mac_header')
Question 1: Why can't I get an ODBC connection to this Informix 5.10 database?
Question 2: How can I extract tables with this sort of data in it? I'm happy to store it as a normal date/time field in the destination SQL 2005 database, but I can't convert something that I can't extract.

I'm Trying to replicate the creation of an "xml" file that is currently created using a C++ application. I want to take that application out of the picture, but need to create the same format XML file because a step later in the production process uses this file, and I cannot change it.

This is regarding one package where we are trying to deploy the package through €śSql Server deployment€? using .dtsx, .dtsConfig and manifest files, but after deployment the package is not found in €śmsdb€?. Instead it is reflecting in €śfile system€? folder. The same behavior is observed repeatedly when we tried to deploy the package.
We have seen such behavior only in this package. Please help us in solving the above scenario.

Over the last 2 months I have gotten this SQL Server error (twice). All existing processes will continue to work, however no new processes can be created and users cannot connect to the server. This is the exact text of the message in the SQL Server error log.

While we can typically just stop SQL Server Service and restart the services...I have found it is best to restart the machine during non-production times to take care of any 'residual' effects of this error.
The SQL Server 2000 SP4 box with Windows 2003 Standard SP1 is well maintained by our I.T. team and it typically will run 4 or 5 months without a reboot.

Hi, I have developed a website in asp.net 2. I have tester it and it is working fine on my computer but when I have uploaded it to my server I'm getting an error message when the user signup. The error occurs when I'm setting the user role to 'members'.
Error line > Roles.AddUserToRole(user.UserName, "members")
The strage thig is that it is working on my computer but not on the server. My home computer and the server are running the same software versions and the website database is the same as well.
To double check that my code is not generating the error I have lonched 'SQL Query Analizer' and executed the folowing code on my database:

Once again the code is working on my home computer but not on the server. On the server I'm getting the following error:

Does anybody know what could cause the error?
Could it be some permissions that I didn't set on my server?

Trying to connect to remote server croaktoad.simpli.biz
I have SQL 2005 Developer on XP SP2 , I have disabled my windows firewall. I can ping to my server (croaktoad.simpli.biz) and i get no error message. My remote connection using both TCP/IP and named pipes are checkeed. My SQL Server Browser is running as well.
However when I try to connect using Managment Studio or running SQLCMD /Scroaktoad. simpli.biz /E I get the following error message

I have a bundling package that runs about 20 other packages. It has been working fine for a while but a couple of days ago it fail with the following message,
Error 0x800706BE while loading package file "D:PackagesToradSales.dtsx". The remote procedure call failed.
I´m running the SSIS packages in an 64-bit environment.

I have a job that has 3 steps to, periodicly the job errors out on Step 1. Following is the message (from Job History).

I think I am getting a similar problem to a previous post, I get this message when restoring a SQL 2005 DB.
Msg 3132, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The media set has 2 media families but only 1 are provided. All members must be provided.

RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
It was backed up using whatever tool is in the full version of Server 2005. I only have the express edition and to restore I have run the filelistonly to find the logical file name. I then run a query like:
restore database new name from disk ='file location and name'
with move
'logical file name for mdf' to 'new location',
move 'logical file for ldf' to 'new location'
I have done this many times before with both 2000 and 2005, although the backup is usually done on command backup database 'database name' to disk ='location and name'.
Please help!
