Remote Db Update, How To?

Dec 29, 2007

hi all,
i have a local SQL server running with my Products table, now very soon we want to launch a website (asp.net 2.0 with sql 2k5), hosted on a shared environment, which synchronises with our local SQL. Replication is out of the question.
i tested already with a webservice on our local server, but i can't find the right way how to periodically update our online Db.since our website has over 200 visits a day, i can't do a check everytime the code is launched. Our local server has a slow upload speed + is not 99.9% garantueed online... the dataset has a 1Mb file size.
i do have a boolean which indicates if there are new products or not, in this way i don't have to download the full dataset on my local SQL.(i can provide a list with only the new products and a list of products which have to be deleted, but still, i'm looking for the best way WHEN to do the update)
Forcing an update from my local server to the online server seems a problem since i have restricted rights on the online server.

Update A Database On A Remote Server

Jun 12, 2008

I have a database on my web hosting site.  It is a sql server 2005 database that was created in sql server management studio express.
I can access this database in code using a connection string and do things like show results on my page.
However I now want to do things like delete certain records, or update stored procedure criteria, usually I would do this by running sql in management studio but as my database is now online with the hosting company how would I do this?

How To Update Remote Databases Easily?

Dec 19, 2001

Hiya!
I'm developing an app. using SQL Server 7 (as the back end) for a company supporting approx. 200 unrelated clients, all in different locations. There is no LAN or WAN connection between them, so we'd probably need to use TCP/IP. The problem is as follows: We have dynamic reports in our app. which are run based on data in two tables. Whenever we add a new report we'd like to send it to all of our clients i.e. update their tables to reflect the additional rows of new report info. How would this best be handled, by DTS or Replication or BCP? And how could it be done with either?

Thanks,
Sarah

Update Remote Table With Openquery

Apr 16, 2008

Hello,

I have an application that uses a MS SQL 2005 database. When data is changed in certain tables, that data needs to be pushed to a MySQL box. I've added the MySQL server as a linked server in SQL 2k5 and I can delete and insert data with no problem, however when I try to update I get the following error (query included):

Code Snippet

with RemoteTable(r_AccountID, r_Name)
as (select AccountID, Name from openquery(RACS_TEST, 'select AccountID, Name from accounts'))
update RemoteTable
set r_Name = ex_Name
from Export_RACS_Accounts join remotetable
on r_AccountID = ex_AccountID

OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "RACS_TEST" returned message "Row cannot be located for updating. Some values may have been changed since it was last read.".
Msg 7343, Level 16, State 4, Line 33
The OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "RACS_TEST" could not UPDATE table "[MSDASQL]". The rowset was using optimistic concurrency and the value of a column has been changed after the containing row was last fetched or resynchronized.

What am I doing wrong ?

UPDATE Table From A Remote DB OR INSERT If Doesnt Excists.

Sep 2, 2004

I have been looking for a solution for this for some time and have came up empty handed.

I have 2 servers development box and a live box. Time has passed and my live box has a lot of new data in the database and now I need to update the dev box so I can properly test with real data. Problem here is I want to keep the records that are in the dev box, update them if they exsist on the live box, because live server may or may not contain that record and isert all records that are not on the dev box database.

I hope I am making some sense here, I think I am just making it more difficult then it has to be.

Any suggestions?

Remote Update Having A Linked Server Takes Forever To Execute

Oct 17, 2006

UPDATE CD SET col1=SR.col1,col2=SR.col2,col3=SR.col3,col4=SR.col4,col5=SR.col5,col6=SR.col6,col7=SR.col7,

col8=SR.col8,col9=SR.col9,col10=SR.col10

FROM LNKSQL1.db1.DBO.Table1 CD

join Table2 USRI on USRI.col00 = CD.col00

join table3 SR on USRI.col00 = SR.col00

Here, I'm trying to tun this from an instance and do a remote update. col00 is a primary key and there is a clustered index that exists on this column. When I run this query, it does a 'select * from tabl1' on the remote server and that table has about 60 million rows. I don't understand why it would do a select *... Also, we migrated to SQL 2005 a week or so back but before that everything was running smooth. I dont have the execution plan from before but this statement was fast. Right now, I can't run this statement at all. It takes about 37 secs to do one update. But if I did the update on a local server doing remote joins here, it would work fine. When I tried to show the execution plan, it took about 10 mins to show up an estimated plan and 99% of the time was spent on Remote scan. Please let me know what I can do to improve my situation. Thank you

Remote Scan On Linked Server - Fast SELECT/Slow UPDATE

Aug 14, 2001

In an ASP, I have a dynamically created SQL statement that amounts to "SELECT * FROM Server1.myDB.dbo.myTable WHERE Col1 = 1" (Col1 is the table's primary key). It returns the data immediately when executed.

However, when the same record is updated with "UPDATE Server1.myDB.dbo.myTable SET Comments = 'blah blah blah' WHERE Col1 = 1", the page times out before the query can complete.

I watched the program in Profiler, and I saw on the update that sp_cursorfetch was being executed as an RPC once per each row in the table. In a table of 78000 records, the timeout occurs well before the last record is fetched, and the update bombs.

I can run the same statements in Query Analyzer from a linked server and have the same results. The execution plan shows that a Remote Query is occurring on the select that returns 1 row, and a Remote Scan is taking place on the update scanning 78000 rows (I guess this is where all the sp_cursorfetch calls are happening...?).

How can I prevent the Remote Scan? How can I prevent the execution of the RPC sp_cursorfetch for each row in the remote table?

Thank you!

Data Access :: Remote Data Object In VB5 To Get Current Login User?

Jul 13, 2015

I'm using a legacy application built using VB5 and SQL Server 7. After recompiling it, and putting the database in SQL Server 2012. I want to access the current login user using the SQL function SUSER_SNAME().

This is the code.

Set rdoRes = goDatabase.Connection.OpenResultset("select suser_sname()")

But I'm unable to get the current user login in the application. If I write any other SQL statement instead of this, then it runs. But only this statement is not running. Is there any security reasons for this?

SQL Server 2014 :: Synchronize Table On Remote Server Via Update Trigger Failing

Jul 21, 2015

We have a database on a 2005 box, which we need to keep in sync with one on a 2014 box (until we can turn off the one on 2005). The 2005 database is still being updated with changes that must be applied to the 2014 database, given the nature of the data (medical documents) we need to ensure updates are applied to the 2014 database in very near real time (these changes are - for example - statuses, not the documents themselves).

Cunning plan #1, ulgy - not at all a fan of triggers - but use an after update trigger to run a sp on the remote box via a linked server in this format, with a SQL Server login for the linked server with permissions to EXEC the remote proc.

CREATE TRIGGER [dbo].[SourceUpdate] ON [dbo].[SourceTable]
AFTER UPDATE
AS
SET XACT_ABORT ON;
SET NOCOUNT ON;
IF UPDATE(ColumnName)

[Code] ....

However, while the sp can be run against the linked server as a standalone query OK, when running it in a trigger it's throwing

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "WIBBLE" returned message "The transaction manager has disabled its support for remote/network transactions.".

Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Procedure TheAfterUpdateTrigger, Line 19

The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "WIBBLE" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

Whether it actually possible to call a proc on a remote box via a trigger and if so what additional hoops need to be jumped through (like I said, it'll run OK called via SSMS)?

Remote Data Access

May 27, 2008

Hi,

I have an MS SQL Server 2000 database running on a local area network. The database contains product info that I would like to use to populate a web catelog being hosted off site.

Can someone point me in the right direct regarding common practices for using this product database, which is updated on a regular basis, to update my Web catelog?

I was thinking periodically the Web server could remotely query my product database for new entries (this does not need to be real time).

What do you think...

Remote Data Updating

Apr 25, 2008

Hello all, quick question and then a little background.

Could someone point me in the right direction when it comes to updating remotely deployed instances of a SQL CE database? I don't expect someone to code my project for me, but I'm getting lost in the sea of information and haven't found anything that looks like what we need yet.

What's going on is that I was given the wonderful opportunity to learn SQL.NET programming from the other side of application development. I'm not a beginner programmer by any means, but kind of a newbie when it this level of SQL deployment. What we are trying to do is give our users applications that use a local instance of the larger SQL database we have on the server. We were thinking that deploying SQL CE databases created from the master DB would be a good solution since it is supposed to have updating capabilities, which would be wonderful since then the users wouldn't have to be burdened by having to manually download and update a huge database install file every time we updated the information in the master.

What I'm finding though (after going throught the tutorials), is that the RDA feature (this would only need a pull function) that we were hoping to use requires that you delete the entire table, and then replace. If the master DB has only a few record changes in several scattered tables, it seem that this operation would be similar in size and resource demands as just re-downloading the entire database again (~2.7 gigabytes and growing).

Is there a function that can use a feature on the field properties that can download and replace only those fields/records that have changed intead of basically replacing the entire database?

Sorry if this seems like a painfully obvious question, but I have been looking for a while and haven't been able to find it.

thanks a ton in advance!
Brian

Moving Data From Local To Remote

Jun 25, 2006

Hi All,
I am completely new to VS2005 and .net2.0 but I am learning fast! But one thing that I am struggling with is the deployment of my website, or to be more precise the deployment of the data that was created during development on my local machine.
I have used VS2005 to create a simple personal site. I have created a single user (myself) in an admin and friends role. So far so good. The site works great on my local machine, all the default photos provided with the site display correctly etc and I can log in OK.
My remote server (ie my web hosts) provide me with a separate SQL server on which to install my databases. I have created a database on this server and configured it so that it contains all the correct tables and schemas etc. I have modified my web config file to connect to this database and when I browse to my default.aspx page it displays in my browser fine...EXCEPT that none of the data ( ie the photos and user data) is in the database so therefore no pictures display and I can't log in!!
What I can't figure out is how do I get all the data from my local app_data folder into my new remote database!!?? I can't find anything that explains how to do this. Surely this is one of the most important operations of all since data is what .net2.0 is all about!
Thanks in anticipation

Maintaining SQL Data On A Remote Host.

Oct 29, 2007

Hi,What is the preferred way to maintain SQL tables on a remote host?I am a newbie to building ASP.NET websites on a remote host.A stumbling point has been the maintenance of SQL tables on the remote host.I understand about doing complete backup and restores, but I am seeking a quicker way to maintain individual files.I would like to click and edit but instead am going through the following 30+ clicks. Is there a easier way? Thanks.
For example, what I do now to build a new data table for a hosted website.1) Design table 1a) Name 1b) Fields & Types
2) SQL Server Management Studio Express (assuming existing database) 2a) Select Database & Tables 2b) Add new table 2c) Add fields,  Key must be INT for ACCESS 2d) Save as (Name_Table)
3) MS Access  (requires ODBC to be setup first through the Windows control panel) 3a) Tables / New / Link / ODBC /Machine_Data_Source 3b) Pick table 3c) Edit data, as needed
4) To transfer data, first:Select the database in the VWD solution explorer, then right-click and select the new "Publish to Provider" 4a) Database Publishing Wizard   4b) Choose table to script a backup from 4c) Build script & Copy
5) Start Ipswitch FTP ( this step can be rplaced by 6e below) 5a) locate folder & sql script file and choose destination directory 5b) Transfer file
6) Login to remote host host (1and1) 6a) MS SQL Administration  6b) Admin (MyLittleTools Admin) 6c) Tools 6d) Quey Analyser 6e) Paste script (from step 4) 6f) Submit (Run) 6g) Verify table built
FYI: Script to build and populate the new table "Name_Table"Built by step 4c above, pasted into remote Hosts Query Analyzer by step 6e above.

Transfer Data From Remote SQL Server

Jun 2, 2008

Hi All:

I'm looking for some advice. We have multiple remote SQL Server 2005 systems at various clients that all contain the same WorkTrack database. We need to send this data on a daily basis from all of these remote servers to our main server (ChemWeb/Spindle) in our corporate office. The thing is that we need to do this over standard HTTP - no VPN connection, etc.

So I'm thinking of using SQL 2005 Web services to do such. Here's my plan (the name of the Database on the client side and server is WorkTrack, and SDP is the acronym I am using for a Spindle Data Packet which contains the data to be updated from the client)

1. Every day update a WorkTrack_SDP database on the client server that will contain all of the data from WorkTrack (name of Spindle Client Database) that has changed since the last SDP transfer. This WorkTrack_SDP database will only contain the tables from the WorkTrack database that are necessary for transfer to the ChemWeb/Spindle server

2. The WorkTrack_SDP database will have the same schema as the WorkTrack database with one additional Customer_No column in each table.

3. All of the tables in WorkTrack_SDP database will be truncated before insertion of updated data.

4. An acknowledgement of the previous SDP transfer and ChemWeb/Spindle Server update will be required before this process will proceed.

5. There will be an additional table in the Client WorkTrack database to track SDP transfers.
a. Date/Time range of updated data of each transfer
b. When the transfer was sent
c. When the transfer was completed.

6. Create SPROC’s on the ChemWeb/Spindle server to serve as SQL Endpoints (Web Services) to update/insert data from client systems to WorkTrack_SDP database on the ChemWeb/Spindle Server.

7. Create SPROC on ChemWeb/Spindle server that will transfer data from WorkTrack_SDP into WorkTrack

Any thoughts & comments are greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Ken Blum

I have been successful with DTS packages and various SQL statements. However, I have a new challenge. I have a table in an SQL Server database. One of the columns is employee number and a column for department number(which is not populated) In a remote AS400 file I have the employees number and department number. I want to create a package to connect to remote table and update SQL Server table with department number where the two tables match on the employee number.

Remote Data Access (RDA.Pull)

Oct 19, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to use RDA.pull to pull data from SQL server 2000 to sql mobile, but it fails when some columns are included in the SQLSelectString, though the datatypes involved are only char, float, smallint and smalldatetime, and nothing is longer than 30. Since there is a very large number of columns, it is difficult to isolate the guilty one by trial and error! Coud someone please help?

Uploading SQL SERVER With Remote Data.

Jan 3, 2007

Client side:
1. my DSN is CMDB.dsn on a mapped network drive(only way for now that I get a connection)
2. My client does not fail to connect, but I am having a hard time
linking my database tables to each other. Through Access 03.
3. My client is remote
4. I can ping the server,
5. but I cannot telnet
6. My application is Access 2003,
7. I am on a different domain
9. I have table names that match,
10. I do not force encryption.

Server side:
1. SQL SERVER 2005
2. Standard Edition
3. TCPIP
4. The server starts fine
5. The SQL browser is enabled YES
6. Domain Account
7. Not applicable
8. NO

Platform:
1. Client runs Windows XP, Server runs Windows Server 2003

My question then is this: Does anyone know of code that can be used to import data from a CSV file to a server on a different domain?
This is tricky cause the connection is not really allowing this kind of access. Which is my next question: How do you get these two applications to connect?
I don't want to do it with ADP, and linking the tables I always seem to have to place the DSN on a mapped network drive to get results. Then after that I go
to link tables from the SQL Server and the tables I created there are no where to be found. Why is this happening? It gives me a list of System tables but none of my
