Update A Dataset From An Updated MSSQL Table
May 23, 2007
Here is my problem: I've created a table in MSSQL named MyReferences and then a typed dataset to connect to it.
Then I realized that I needed to add a column to MyReferences table and then I did it.
The problem is that I cannot find a way to add the new column to the typed dataset. I am unable to view it in the available columns.
Can anyone help me?
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 sp1 and C#.
Best regards
Alessandro

Hi SQL fans,I realized that I often encounter the same situation in a relationdatabase context, where I really don't know what to do. Here is anexample, where I have 2 tables as follow:__________________________________________ | PortfolioTitle|| Portfolio |+----------------------------------------++-----------------------------+ | tfolio_id (int)|| folio_id (int) |<<-PK----FK--| tfolio_idfolio (int)|| folio_name (varchar) | | tfolio_idtitle (int)|--FK----PK->>[ Titles]+-----------------------------+ | tfolio_weight(decimal(6,5)) |+-----------------------------------------+Note that I also have a "Titles" tables (hence the tfolio_idtitlelink).My problem is : When I update a portfolio, I must update all theassociated titles in it. That means that titles can be either removedfrom the portfolio (a folio does not support the title anymore), addedto it (a new title is supported by the folio) or simply updated (atitle stays in the portfolio, but has its weight changed)For example, if the portfolio #2 would contain :[ PortfolioTitle ]id | idFolio | idTitre | poids1 2 1 102 2 2 203 2 3 30and I must update the PortfolioTitle based on these values :idFolio | idTitre | poids2 2 202 3 352 4 40then I should1 ) remove the title #1 from the folio by deleting its entry in thePortfolioTitle table2 ) update the title #2 (weight from 30 to 35)3 ) add the title #4 to the folioFor now, the only way I've found to do this is delete all the entriesof the related folio (e.g.: DELETE TitrePortefeuille WHERE idFolio =2), and then insert new values for each entry based on the new givenvalues.Is there a way to better manage this by detecting which value has to beinserted/updated/deleted?And this applies to many situation :(If you need other examples, I can give you.thanks a lot!ibiza

Stepping thru the code with the debugger shows the dataset rows being deleted.
After executing the code, and getting to the page presentation. Then I stop the debug and start the
page creation process again ( Page_Load ). The database still has the original deleted dataset rows.
Adding rows works, then updating works fine, but deleting rows, does not seem to work.
The dataset is configured to send the DataSet updates to the database. Use the standard wizard to create the dataSet.
cDependChildTA.Fill(cDependChildDs._ClientDependentChild, UserId); rowCountDb = cDependChildDs._ClientDependentChild.Count; for (row = 0; row < rowCountDb; row++) { dr_dependentChild = cDependChildDs._ClientDependentChild.Rows[0]; dr_dependentChild.Delete(); //cDependChildDs._ClientDependentChild.Rows.RemoveAt(0); //cDependChildDs._ClientDependentChild.Rows.Remove(0); /* update the Client Process Table Adapter*/ // cDependChildTA.Update(cDependChildDs._ClientDependentChild); // cDependChildTA.Update(cDependChildDs._ClientDependentChild); }
/* zero rows in the DataSet at this point */ /* update the Child Table Adapter */ cDependChildTA.Update(cDependChildDs._ClientDependentChild);

I have an existing call to a webservice that updates an MDB with data from a dataset.
I was now moving to a process using SQL Compact Edition sdf instead of an mdb.
I belive I have to DROP/Truncate the table in the SDF file, then create a new table then somehow insert the results of the retrieved dataset into the new table. DOes anybody have any pointers to help me out?
Here is my old way of doing it, using access.
Thanks.
Private Sub retrieveData(ByVal intMode As Integer)
'This process will call a webservice passing a parameter which in turn executes a SQL stored procedure, returning a dataset
Dim MyObj As localhost.Service1 = New localhost.Service1
Dim ds As DataSet
ds = MyObj.RetrieveSQLdata(txtSecureString, intMode)
Dim myConnection As OleDbConnection
Dim cmd As OleDbCommand = New OleDbCommand
Dim Connstr As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & Path & FileName & ";Persist Security Info=False"
myConnection = New OleDbConnection(Connstr)
myConnection.Open()
cmd.Connection = myConnection
Dim mystr As String = ""
For Each row As DataRow In ds.Tables(0).Rows
mystr = ""
mystr = mystr & "INSERT INTO CustMast ( "
mystr = mystr & "StoreNo, CustNo, ShipNo"
mystr = mystr & "values("
mystr = mystr & "'" & row("StoreNo").ToString & "', "
mystr = mystr & "'" & row("CustNo").ToString & "', "
mystr = mystr & "'" & row("ShipNo").ToString & "')"
cmd.CommandText = mystr
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
Next
System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents()
cmd.Dispose()
myConnection.Close()
myConnection.Dispose()
End Sub

also every time I want to modify the insert command to return the updated identity of inserted row, i get the error: "Unable to parse query text."
(Should I post this in Orcas forum?!)

Hi,
I have an application where I'm filling a dataset with values from a table. This table has no primary key. Then I iterate through each row of the dataset and I compute the value of one of the columns and then update that value in the dataset row. The problem I'm having is that when the database gets updated by the SqlDataAdapter.Update() method, the same value shows up under that column for all rows. I think my Update Command is not correct since I'm not specifying a where clause and hence it is using just the value lastly computed in the dataset to update the entire database. But I do not know how to specify a where clause for an update statement when I'm actually updating every row in the dataset. Basically I do not have an update parameter since all rows are meant to be updated. Any suggestions?
SqlCommand snUpdate = conn.CreateCommand();
snUpdate.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
snUpdate.CommandText = "Update TestTable set shipdate = @shipdate";
snUpdate.Parameters.Add("@shipdate", SqlDbType.Char, 10, "shipdate");
string jdate ="";
for (int i = 0; i < ds.Tables[0].Rows.Count - 1; i++)
{
jdate = ds.Tables[0].Rows[i]["shipdate"].ToString();
ds.Tables[0].Rows[i]["shipdate"] = convertToNormalDate(jdate);
}
da.Update(ds, "Table1");
conn.Close();
-Thanks

We are trying to update a changed DataSet to at table in MSSQL server
The table have an XML field and that gets converted to System.String when we get from the DB when we try to save the dataset the XML field ind the table is set to NULL
How can this be, the DataSet can convert it to System.String when we SELECT it from the DB, but when we save, nothing happens and we get an empty field. Not even an SQL error...

Hi,
I'm using sql-2005.
I want to update several columns in different tables whenever an update is happend on specific table. I have a trigger for that which update all the relevant places when it fires.
I want to do this update only if certains columns were changed, otherwise - do anything, to reduce performance.
How Can I know which columns were updated inside the trigger? The tables has many columns and only if 2 of them were changed then I need to update other tables.
Many thanks,
Nira.

I wrote a stored proc to be implemented in a datagrid. I went and used it on a record to update some information and it updated THE WHOLE DATABASE WITH THAT ONE RECORD..
IF anyone could shead some light on what I'm doing wrong that would be great.
Here is the syntax for my stored proc.
CREATE PROC updateResults2
@id int, @address1 nvarchar (50), @address2 nvarchar (50), @CITY nvarchar (33), @ST nvarchar (10), @ZIP_OUT nvarchar (5), @ZIP4_OUT nvarchar (4), @home_phone nvarchar (22), @NEWPhone nvarchar (20)
AS
UPDATE Results
SET address1 = @address1,
address2 = @address2,
CITY = @CITY,
ST = @ST,
ZIP_OUT = @ZIP_OUT,
ZIP4_OUT = @ZIP4_OUT,
home_phone = @home_phone,
NEWPhone = @NEWPhone
GO
As said previously it ran but it updated the WHOLE DATABASE with the same change (WHICH I DIDNT WANT IT TO DO)!!
Thanks in advance.

Hi
Apologies if this is a silly question
I have a basic table "Customer" which has
Id
Address1
Address2
Address3
Town
County
Postcode
SearchData
After I insert or Update a row in this table I need to update the SearchData column
with
UPPER(ADDRESS1) + UPPER(ADDRESS2) + UPPER(TOWN) + UPPER(POSTCODE)
only for that Id
I'm sure this is only a basic update but all the examples I can find are for inserting into other tables not the row itself.

I'm working on databases where statistics of some indexes (tables) are changing too frequently. Once I update them manually, one minute after they get 10-20% change, and five minutes after they get over 100% change. Tables get updated very frequently (multiple times in a second).
When I run a query to read from sys.stats, sys.dm_db_stats_properties and other dynamic views, I see that they were last updated when I did it manually, but the change rate overpassed the 500+20% (tables have multiples of 10K rows). Auto create and update statistics are set to true on all databases, and I don't know why sql server does not do that automatically.

Hi, I am trying to figure out how to update a dataset. Below is my sample code but it gives me this error on the mySqlDataAdapter.Update line.Dynamic SQL generation for the UpdateCommand is not supported against a SelectCommand that does not return any key column information. I looked around and it seems like I'm supposed to add a Primary Key but I did that and still get nothing. Below is my page load code... it is based on the quickstart at http://quickstarts.asp.net/QuickStartv20/howto/doc/adoplus/UpdateDataFromDB.aspx but I'm still having trouble and not sure what I'm missing. 1 // Create a new Connection and SqlDataAdapter

I have a table written in to sql by the program Wincc flex wich is currently constantly saving data in to it. I want to reed this data back in to Labview and update it’s content on Labview constantly to plot a graph that keeps updating over time.
I have achieved this after some research but my problem is that I need a way of just reading the last row (meaning most recent row, not last row as the bottom one) inserted in to the table written by wincc and saved in sql WITHOUT having to read all the data and selecting for example the higest value of a timestamp column (which is added by wincc) because this would cause too much lag since the table has a lot of elements and I need to constantly read it. One of the main problems is that the data written by wincc is written in a circular buffer, which does delete 20% of the data when it fill’s up and start writing new data in to the free space, so that the temporal order of the data does nothing to do (at least nothing simple) with the index order in the table. Is there anything like a method to save the index of the last row modified in the table so that labview could read it and directly access the most recent recordset in the table just by index specification on a query?

i have a table1 with 3,25,000 records in US database.i want to upadate this table information in to table2 in SG database based on some condition (if prodid and skuno match in both tables, then update ordertransferind column in table2 from table1) what is happening is after 10,000 records query is not executing. in status bar it is displaying 'done'. but only 10,000 records are updating not the remaining ones. for this 10,000 records also it is taking more than 1 hour time. i tried by incresing the commandTimeout to max value(99999)...but still it is same...any advise...please suggest...
i am using sql2005,visualstudio 2005....
thanks for the help..
Anne
