Update Temp Table With Stored Procedure Joined With Table
Sep 8, 2006
Hello
Is it possible to insert data into a temp table with data returned from a stored procedure joined with data from another table?
insert #MyTempTable
exec [dbo].[MyStoredProcedure] @Par1, @Par2, @Par3
JOIN dbo.OtherTable...
I'm missing something before the JOIN command. The temp table needs to know which fields need be updated.
I just can't figure it out
Many Thanks!

I don't know if it's a local issue but I can't use temp table or table variable in a PP query (so not in a stored procedure).
Environment: W7 enterprise desktop 32 + Office 2012 32 + PowerPivot 2012 32
Simple example:
declare @tTable(col1 int)
insert into @tTable(col1) values (1)
select * from @tTable
Works perfectly in SQL Server Management Studio and the database connection is OK to as I may generate PP table using complex (or simple) queries without difficulty.
But when trying to get this same result in a PP table I get an error, idem when replacing table variable by a temporary table.
Message: OLE DB or ODBC error. .... The current operation was cancelled because another operation the the transaction failed.

Here's my problem:I'm developing an ASP.NET 2.0 application that has a user select one or moreauto manufacturers from a listbox ("lstMakes"). Once they do this, anotherlistbox ("lstModels") should be filled with all matching models made by theselected manufacturers. If lstMakes was not multi-select, I'd have noproblem. But in this case it has to be multi-select. The database is SQLServer 2005 which does not accept arrays as parameters. I've been told thatI have to create an XML document that will act as a filtered Manufacturerstable that I can join to my Models table in my stored procedure. Problem isI don't have the foggiest idea how to do this. I've seen some examples thatjust leave me scratching my head so I was hoping someone could look at whatI'm trying to do and show me how to do this. Thanks!

Could someone help me get this stored procedure to work? I want to give the stored procedure a long list of departments and have them added to a temp table. This only gets the first dept. in the temp table. I'm confused. Open to other suggestions, but want to use a 1col temp table to hold the depts.
After this is done, an SQL query is run using the temp table.
Input for test:
--csi_crystal_xxxx "pc9xp,pc8,pc7,pc6,pc6543,pc945678"
--select * from ##CrystalGetCosts
create procedure csi_crystal_xxxx
@DeptResp varchar(4000)
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON
DECLARE @SQL varchar(8000)
DECLARE @Dept varchar(10)
DECLARE @iLen int
DECLARE @iPtr int
DECLARE @iEnd int
If Exists (Select name, Type From [tempdb]..[sysobjects]
where name = '##CrystalGetCosts' And Type = 'U')
Drop table ##CrystalGetCosts
CREATE TABLE ##CrystalGetCosts (Dept_Resp_No varchar(10))
Set @iLen=Len(@DeptResp)
Set @iPtr = 1
While @iPtr < @iLen
BEGIN
SET @iEND = charindex(',',@DeptResp,@iPtr)
Set @Dept= Substring (@DeptResp,@iPtr,@iEnd-1)
INSERT INTO ##CrystalGetCosts Values (@Dept)

Hi
I have a search page having four fields. Giving any one of the field as input should retrieve search results in Gridview.
In GridView1 i have child Gridview for displaying details related to Gridview 1.
now i have to write storedprocedure for getting values in two grids.
there is one matching column in two tables i.e CNo.from first select statement we have to capture CNo and basing on that retrieve second table values.
I have a stored procedure for that but my problem is
i stored CNo in temp table i.e @MyTable .after doing select statements from two tables
i want to delete @MyTable. But iam not able to. so pls help me
My stored procedure code is here:
set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[search1]
(@val1 varchar(225),
@val2 varchar(50),
@val3 varchar(50),
@val4 varchar(50))
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @MyTable table (CNo varchar(255))
INSERT @MyTable
Select CNo From customer where
((@val1 IS NULL) or (CNo = @val1)) AND
((@val2 IS NULL) or(LastName = @val2)) AND
((@val3 IS NULL) or(FirstName = @val3)) AND
((@val4 IS NULL) or(PhoneNumber = @val4))
--Now do your two selects
SELECT *
FROM customer c
INNER JOIN @MyTable T ON c.CNo = T.CNo
Select *
From refunds r
INNER JOIN @MyTable t ON r.CNo = t.CNo
END
The output of storedprocedure is like this:
Iam getting all the columns of two tables but the CNo column is repeating twice in both the tables.

I'm working on building a report and asked a developer which table some data comes from in an application. His answer was the name of a 3500 line stored procedure that returns 2 result sets. I could accomplish what I'm trying to do using the second result set, but I'm not sure how to put that into a temporary table so that I could use it.
Here's my plan according to the Kübler-Ross software development lifecycle:
Denial - Ask the developer to make sure this is correct (done)
Despair - Look hopelessly for a solution (where I am now)
Anger - Chastise developer
Bargaining - See if I can get him to at least swap the order that the resultsets are returned
Acceptance - Tell the users that this can't be done at present.

Hi all,
I've a requirement to store the output of the stored procedure into temp. tables/ table varibles.
I've 4 select statements as my output of the stored procedure. How do I store the results of all the 4 select stmnts into 4 different temp tables.
Simplified SP is as...
Create procedure usp_test
as
begin
select c1,c2 from table1
select c3,4 from table2
select c9,c8 from table3
select c5,c7 from Table4
end
I'm expecting something like this...
declare @table1 table (c1, c2)
insert into @table1
Exec <Sp_Name>
select * from @table1
I know the above stmnt works, if my SP has only 1 select stmnt as output.
Please help me to acheive this for multiple select statements.
Thanks,

I am working with the following two tables:
Category(NewID,OldID)
Link(CategoryID,BusinessID)
All fields are of Integer Type.
I need to write a stored procedure in sql 2000 which works as follows:
Select all the NewID and OldID from the Category Table
(SELECT NewID,OldID FROM Category)
Then for each rows fetched from last query, execute a update query in the Link table.
For Example,
Let @NID be the NewID for each rows and @OID be the OldID for each rows.
Then the query for each row should be..
UPDATE Link SET CategoryID=@CID WHERE CategoryID=@OID
Please help me with the code.

I would like to know if the following sql can be used to obtain specific columns from calling a stored procedure with parameters:
/* Create TempTable */
CREATE TABLE #tempTable (MyDate SMALLDATETIME, IntValue INT)
GO
/* Run SP and Insert Value in TempTable */
INSERT INTO #tempTable (MyDate, IntValue)
EXEC TestSP @parm1, @parm2
If the above does not work or there is a better way to accomplish this goal, how to change the sql?

Guys - sorry for the long post - hope it's clear
DDL/DML below
I want to update the startdate column (for all rows) so that when period is 0 then the new value
is a hardcoded value (say '01-Dec-2000') but for all other rows it takes the value in the
enddate column for the row of the previous column (with the same freq)
ie the startdate column for period 1 takes the enddate value for period 0 and so on for a particular freq
create table #periods (period int , startdate datetime , [enddate] datetime , freq int)
insert #periods ( period , startdate , enddate , freq)
select 0 , '01-Jan-1900' , '31-Jan-2001' , 1

Using a string of IDs passed into a stored procedure as a VARCHAR parameter ('1,2,100,1020,') in an IN without parsing the list to a temp table or table variable. Here's the situation, I've got a stored procedure that is called all the time. It's working with some larger tables (100+ Million rows). The procedure passes in as one of the variables a list of IDs for the large table. This list can have anywhere from 1 to ~100 IDs passed to it.
Currently, we are using a function to parse the list of IDs into a temp table then joining the temp table to get the query:
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[GetStuff] (
@IdList varchar(max)
)
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON
SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED
[Code] .....
The problem we're running into is that since this proc gets called so often, we sometimes run into tempDB contention that slows this down. In my testing (unfortunately I don't have a good way of generating a production load) swapping the #table for an @table didn't make any difference which makes sense to me given that they are both allocated in the tempDB. One approach that I tried was that since the SELECT query is pretty simple, I moved it to dynamic SQL:
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[GetStuff] (
@IdList varchar(max)
)
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON
SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED
[Code] ....
The problem I had there, is that it creates an Ad Hoc plan for the query and only reuses it if the same list of parameters are passed in, so I get a higher CPU cost because it compiles a plan and it also causes the plan cache to bloat since the parameter list is almost always different. Is there an approach that I haven't considered that may get the best of both worlds, avoiding or minimizing tempDB contention but also not having to compile a new plan every time the proc is run?

pst.setString(1, "IN");

rs.last();
System.out.println(" Row Number "+rs.getRow());
rs.beforeFirst();
while(rs.next())

System.out.println(" Procedure is "+rs.getString(1));
}
same sp working perfectly with SQL Server 2000
am getting a error message

If a SP doesnt have a temp table, then there is no issue, SP executes perfectly, but if a SP has a temp table, this error occurs.
SP :

I am trying to get a SQL statement to work with both Access 2000 and SQL Server 2000.
The statement that works in SQL Server is:
---
UPDATE [myTable2]
SET
[myTable2].[FieldA] = 'Hello',
[myTable2].[FieldB] = 2,
[myTable2].[FieldC] = 'xxx',
[myTable2].[FieldD] = 0
FROM [myTable1] INNER JOIN
(myTable2 INNER JOIN [myTable3]
ON [myTable2].[FieldX]=[myTable2].[FieldY])
ON [myTable1].[FieldZ]=[myTable2].[FieldY]
WHERE ([myTable2].[FieldY]=1)
And ([myTable3].[FieldZ]='xxx');
---
(names have been changed to protect the innocent)
The statement that works in Access is:
---
UPDATE [myTable1] INNER JOIN
(myTable2 INNER JOIN [myTable3]
ON [myTable2].[FieldX]=[myTable2].[FieldY])
ON [myTable1].[FieldZ]=[myTable2].[FieldY]
SET
[myTable2].[FieldA] = 'Hello',
[myTable2].[FieldB] = 2,
[myTable2].[FieldC] = 'xxx',
[myTable2].[FieldD] = 0
WHERE ([myTable2].[FieldY]=1)
And ([myTable3].[FieldZ]='xxx');
---
It seems that neither will accept the other format. Can anyone suggest how I can rearrange the statement so that it works in both?

Hi,
I've got a stored procedure which should update a table (add new customer record)
When I run it locally everythings fine,
Since uploading it all to the web it no longer seems to add a new record,
I've debugged it and it seems that the output parameters is set to nothing.
I believe it's a permissions issue but the user i'm using has full access to both the table
and permission to execute the stored procedure is there any error handling I can
do to capture the exact error? the code I use to execute the sProc is below
thanks for any help
Dave
Try
myConnection.Open()
myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
myConnection.Close()
' Calculate the New CustNo using Output Param from SPROC
Dim custNo As Integer = CInt(parameterCustNo.Value)
Return custNo.ToString()
Catch
<---This is where it's dropping in can I put any
Error handling in to show me the error?
Return String.Empty
End Try

If I have stored procedure called UpdateTable, which takes 5 parameters @TableName, @PrimaryKeyName, @PrimaryKeyValue, @ColumnName, @ColumnValue
Then I would have something like
UPDATE @TableName
Set @ColumnName = @ColumnValue
Where @PrimaryKeyName = @PrimaryKeyValue
Cheers

I've got a sp that goes well. Except for the tinyint value, that doesn't update in the table.
ALTER PROCEDURE[dbo].[spTelling]
(
@ScanNummer NVARCHAR(13),
@Basis tinyint,
@CurrentTal INT OUT
)
[Code] ...
The insert statement works. But I want also to update Basis (tinyint) in the table Telling.
WHENMATCHED
THENUPDATE
SETtgt.Tal += src.Tal
Where must I write
set basis = @Basis
if you do not try, it will not work....

Hi,
I am new to stored procedure.
My stored procedure is returning me the list of tables names where the given tables PK is used as FK (can be null), based on the result of stored procedure I need to update the tables.
Following Stored procedure will return the list of tables where the usertable's PK is referred as a FK
I want to use the returned table name and update the set eh FK's value = null.
Some how it is not working , can some one point me out on correct solution.
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_delete_data]
AS
DECLARE @update_Var table (
REF_Table nvarchar(50),
FK_Column varchar(25),
PK_Table varchar(25),
PK_Column varchar(25),
Constraint_Name varchar(50));
insert into @update_Var
SELECT
FK.TABLE_NAME,
CU.COLUMN_NAME,
PK.TABLE_NAME,
PT.COLUMN_NAME,
C.CONSTRAINT_NAME
FROM
INFORMATION_SCHEMA.REFERENTIAL_CONSTRAINTS C
INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS FK ON C.CONSTRAINT_NAME = FK.CONSTRAINT_NAME
INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS PK ON C.UNIQUE_CONSTRAINT_NAME = PK.CONSTRAINT_NAME
INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.KEY_COLUMN_USAGE CU ON C.CONSTRAINT_NAME = CU.CONSTRAINT_NAME
INNER JOIN(
SELECT i1.TABLE_NAME, i2.COLUMN_NAME
FROM
INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS i1
INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.KEY_COLUMN_USAGE i2 ON i1.CONSTRAINT_NAME = i2.CONSTRAINT_NAME
WHERE i1.CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'PRIMARY KEY'
) PT ON PT.TABLE_NAME = PK.TABLE_NAME
WHERE PK.TABLE_NAME='usertable';
Select * from @update_Var

I created one stored procedure to update the date difference in the table . in this table i have dt1,dt2,dt3... column and diff1,diff2... I wanted to find the difference between dt2 and dt1, and dt4 and dt3 and put it in separate column.
When I compiled the stored procedure, it did not show any error. But when i execute, it shows the error:
Conversion failed when converting datetime from character string.
set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go
ALTER procedure [dbo].[autopost1]
as
begin
declare inner int
[Code] ....

Hello-I'm fairly new to writing SQL statements and would greatly appreciatesome help on this one.I'm working on a project for a non-profit that I volunteer for. Partof the database tracks membership using tables like this:PersonInfo-------------------PersonID (primary key)FirstNameLastNameetc..PeopleMemberships-------------------PPLMembershipIP (primary key)PersonIDMembershipTypeIDFeePaidMembershipTypes--------------------MembershipTypeID (primary key)MembershipYearStandardFeeMembershipDescription (varchar)Just because a person is in PersonInfo, doesn't mean they have anythingin PeopleMemberships (they can be in the databse for other reasons andnot have or have ever had a membership).Membership fees vary by year and type of membership and they want toretain a history of a person's memberships.What I'm looking to do here is write a query (a view in SQL Server)that will return the following InfoPersonID, MostRecentMembershipYear, FeePaidForThatMembership,DescriptionOfThatMembershipI'm thinking that I'd use max(MembershipYear), but that requires groupby for the other columns, so I'm getting all of the people'smemberships returned.I'm pretty sure this can be best done with a subquery, but I'm not surehow.Can someone please point me in the right direction or provide a samplethat I can learn from?Kindly,Ken

I am trying to create a stored procedure that will take a text value passed from an application and update a table using the corresponding integer value using a CASE statement. I get the error: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'SET' when I execute the creation of the SP. What am I missing here? This looks to me like it should work. Here is my code.
CREATE PROCEDURE OfficeMove
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@UserName nvarchar(10),
@NewLocation nchar(5),
@NewCity nvarchar(250)
AS
BEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON;
-- Insert statements for procedure here
Execute as user = '***'
DELETE FROM [SQLSZD].[SZDDB].dbo.Employee_Office_Assignments
WHERE User_Name = @UserName
INSERT INTO [SQLSZD].[SZDDB].dbo.Employee_Office_Assignments
SET User_Name = @UserName,
Room_ID = @NewLocation
UPDATE [SQLSZD].[SZDDB].dbo.Employee_Locations
SET Office_ID =
CASE
WHEN @NewCity = 'Columbus' THEN 1
WHEN @NewCity = 'Cleveland' THEN 2
WHEN @NewCity = 'Cincinnati' THEN 4
WHEN @NewCity = 'Raleigh' THEN 5
WHEN @NewCity = 'Carrollwood' THEN 6
WHEN @NewCity = 'Orlando' THEN 7
END
WHERE User_Name = @UserName
END
GO

I'm trying to update a table from a temporary table but I'm struggling a little with the syntax. Here's what I have so far:
DECLARE @WeekNo INT
SET @WeekNo = 1
WHILE @WeekNo <= 53
BEGIN
SET @SQL = 'UPDATE [Targets]
SET [Target] = SELECT ISNULL(Week' + Cast(@WeekNo as VarChar(2)) + ', 0) FROM #targets
WHERE [CampaignID] = @CampaignID'
SET @WeekNo = @WeekNo + 1
EXECUTE (@SQL)
END
My temp table gets created OK, it's just setting the 'Target' field to the value of the same field in my temp table.
I get the following errors:
Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'SELECT'.
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
Incorrect syntax near ' + Cast(@WeekNo as VarChar(2)) + '.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance,
Brett
