Update Trigger On Linked Server View

Jul 20, 2005

Hi there,

I'm pretty new to SQL and am having some porblems with a linked server.
I have a table on a SQL server which stores employee information.
I also have a view on a linked server which stores the same information.

What I would like to happen is, whenever the view changes on the linked
server I want the information to be changed in the table on my server.

I've been trying to write a trigger to do this, but have had no
luck so far.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Simon

SQL Server 2014 :: Trigger On A View If Any Insert / Update Occurs On Base Table Level

Apr 21, 2015

I have a situation where I have Table A, Table B.

View C is created by joining table A and table B.

I have written a instead of trigger D on view C.

I do not insert/update/delete on the view directly.

For every insert/update in table A /B the values should get insert/update in the view respectively. This insert/update on view should invoke the trigger.

And I am unable to see this trigger work on the view if any insert/update occurs on base table level.

Trigger is working only if any operation is done directly on the view.

Self Join Using Instead Of Update Trigger On A View

Jan 11, 2008

Hello all...I'd appreciate any help on this one.

I created a View...the view looks at four seperate tables.

Next, I created an Instead of Update trigger on that view. It works fine...for a regular UPDATE...SET.

However, it throws an error when I try an update and self join based on that view:

Update T1
Set RateUsed = T1.RateUsed
From Taxroll..Taxroll T1 Join
Taxroll..Taxroll T2 on
T1.Asmt = T2.Asmt and
T1.Taxyear = T2.Taxyear
Where T1.Asmt = '123456789012'
And T1.Taxyear = 2007
And T2.RollChgNum = ''
And T1.RollChgNum Like '%X'
And IsNull(T1.RateUsed,'') > ''

Msg 414, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
UPDATE is not allowed because the statement updates view "Taxroll..Taxroll" which participates in a join and has an INSTEAD OF UPDATE trigger.

There are a few caveats:
First, I thought the join issue was in the view itself. I re-created the view using no joins...all subqueries and still get the error. Second, I re-created the Instead of Update Trigger with no joins, and still get the error.

Thanks!

Intead Of Update/insert Trigger On View Question

Dec 22, 2005

Hello all,SQL Server 2000 documentationhttp://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...rt10/c3761.mspxstates that if view is using "NOT NULL" columns of a base table, theninsert/update performed on a view must provide dummy values for thosecolumns, and code of the trigger should ignore them. But I cannot reproduce this restriction. Code below pasted to QueryAnalysershows that I can not supply dummy values for "NOT NULL" fields when I updateview and still have update done. What do I miss ?VT/*--setup step 1. execute only inside of this commentSET NOCOUNT ONCREATE TABLE TestTable(keyField INT IDENTITY(1,1),dataField1 INT NOT NULL,dataField2 INT DEFAULT 1 NOT NULL)*//* --setup step 2. execute only inside of this commentCREATE VIEW TestView ASSELECT * FROM TestTable*//*--setup step 3. execute only inside of this commentCREATE TRIGGER TestViewTrig_IUON dbo.TestViewINSTEAD OF UPDATEASBEGINSET NOCOUNT ONUPDATE TestTableSETDataField1 = inserted.DataField1,DataField2 = inserted.DataField2FROMTestTable ttINNER JOINinsertedON inserted.KeyField = tt.KeyFieldEND*//*--setup step 4. execute only inside of this commentINSERT INTO TestTable (DataField1,DataField2) Values (1,2)INSERT INTO TestTable (DataField1,DataField2) Values (3,4)INSERT INTO TestTable (DataField1,DataField2) Values (5,6)*/SELECT * FROM TestView-- SQL Server lets me not specify DataField2 when update DataField1 orreverse,-- which is opposed to what documentation saysUPDATE TestView SET DataField1 = DataField1 + 1 where KeyField = 2UPDATE TestView SET DataField2 = DataField2 + 1 where KeyField = 3SELECT * FROM TestView/*-- remove test environmentDROP VIEW TestViewDROP TABLE TestTable*/

Update On Machine Runs Immediately, Update On Linked Server Takes 8 Minutes

Jan 2, 2008

What's up with this?

This takes like 0 secs to complete:

update xxx_TableName_xxx
set d_50 = 'DE',modify_timestamp = getdate(),modified_by = 1159

where enc_id in

('C24E6640-D2CC-45C6-8C74-74F6466FA262',

'762E6B26-AE4A-4FDB-A6FB-77B4782566C3',

'D7FBD152-F7AE-449C-A875-C85B5F6BB462')

but From linked server this takes 8 minutes????!!!??!:

update [xxx_servername_xxxx].xxx_DatabaseName_xxx.dbo.xxx_TableName_xxx
set d_50 = 'DE',modify_timestamp = getdate(),modified_by = 1159

where enc_id in

('C24E6640-D2CC-45C6-8C74-74F6466FA262',

'762E6B26-AE4A-4FDB-A6FB-77B4782566C3',

'D7FBD152-F7AE-449C-A875-C85B5F6BB462')

What settings or whatever would cause this to take so much longer from the linked server?

Edit:
Note) Other queries from the linked server do not have this behavior. From the stored procedure where we have examined how long each query/update takes... this particular query is the culprit for the time eating. I thought it was to do specefically with this table. However as stated when a query window is opened directly onto that server the update takes no time at all.

2nd Edit:
Could it be to do with this linked server setting?
Collation Compatible
right now it is set to false? I also asked this question in a message below, but figured I should put it up here.

How Does A View And SP Over A Linked Server Worked...

Feb 7, 2008

I am working with Two Server €˜X€™ and €˜Z€™

In €˜X€™ server, I have a linked server named €˜CustSrv€™ which is connecting to €˜Z€™ server
In the €˜Z€™ server I have a Database named €˜SalesDB€™

I have a view name vw_CusgtomerData in my €˜X€™ server which is selecting data from SALESDB..Customer_Tbl from the €˜Z€™ server through that linked server (€˜CustSrv€™)

The View is simple selecting data from Customer_Tbl from SalesDB

SELECT * FROM CustSrv.SalesDB.dbo.CUSTOMER_Tbl

[Note here using * for all columns?? Is it ok for performance aspects]

Now I have some Application which are using that view through some stored procedure.Few of them passing some parameters like Cust_Id etc

Now my query is that.. Am I fulfilling all performance issues?

Or

What is the suggestive way to fetch data from that remote (Linked Server) server to get good performance benefit?

In my opinion we can fetch data 4 different way from that linked server€¦

A.SELECT * FROM CustSrv.SalesDB.dbo.CUSTOMER_Tbl

B.exec GetCustomerData 65
[Sp_GetCustomerData is a Storedprocedure which is passing a parameter 65 that is Customer_ID and the procedure is selecting data from the view vw_CusgtomerData]

C.SELECT cu_customer_id, cu_customer_name FROM vw_CusgtomerData ORDER BY cu_customer_name
Or
SELECT * FROM vw_CusgtomerData where Customer_ID=65

D.select * FROM OPENQUERY
(CustSrv,'SELECT Customer_ID,cu_customer_name FROM SalesDB.dbo. CUSTOMER_Tbl ORDER BY cu_customer_name ')

Am I bypass the concept of view and fetch data directly in the stored procedure through the linked server ??

Check If View Exists On A Linked Server

Jun 3, 2015

I am trying to check if a view exists on a linked server using sys.views. I tried to fully qualify it but that produces an error telling me the below, which both the database name is correct as well as the server name. Is it possible to obtain a list of views from a linked server connection? Msg 7314, Level 16, State 1, Line 321 The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "alpha" does not contain the table ""salesdata"."sys"."views"". The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table.

SQL Server 2008 is the server I want to query from and sql server 2000 is the server I want to query even if I try to use this syntax it still produces the above said error

Code:
select
count(*)
from
alpha.salesdata.INFORMATION_SCHEMA.VIEWS

I also tried to qualify the views by using the below and still same error

Code:
select
count(*)
from
alpha.salesdata.INFORMATION_SCHEMA.VIEWS
where
table_schema = 'dbo'

Error Creating View Which Uses Linked Server

Jan 24, 2008

Hellow,

This is the siuation:
I have on server A SQL 2005
on server B i have SQL 2000

I want to create in a database on server A a view which uses a linked server to get data from server B.
The linked server works fine.
But when I want to execute the creation of that view i get this error:

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "BI_AX_LINK" returned message "Unspecified error".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "BI_AX_LINK" returned message "The stored procedure required to complete this operation could not be found on the server. Please contact your system administrator.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Procedure VW_ASSETTABLE, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES_INFO" for OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "BI_AX_LINK". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.

I have checked and the collations between the to databases are the same.
Anyone an idea on who to do such thing?
The rights that i have an server B or not that much.

Thanx for the info

SQL Server 2008 :: INSTEAD OF Trigger On A View

Mar 11, 2015

I have a view made up of a few base tables and another view. I have created an INSTEAD OF trigger on this view, but it doesn't seem to fire whenever a new record shows in the view. The purpose of the trigger is to insert a sister record in a table whenever a new record shown in the view. Here's the catch, the table that the trigger is supposed to insert into is not a base table within the view and the view is not an updatable view. My question is... Do INSTEAD OF triggers only affect the base table(s) within the view and does the view itself have to be an updatable view?

SQL Server 2008 :: View Creation Using XML Column On Linked / Distributed Server?

Sep 4, 2015

A recent SharePoint upgrade has rendered several views obsolete. I am redefining them so that our upper level executive reports show valid data.(yes, I know that doing anything to sharepoint could cause MS to deny support, having said that, this is something I've inherited and need to fix, pronto) The old view was created like so:

USE [AHMC]
GO
/****** Object: View [dbo].[vwSurgicalVolumes] Script Date: 09/04/2015 09:28:03 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
CREATE VIEW [dbo].[vwSurgicalVolumes] AS
SELECT

[code]....

As I said, this view is used in a report showing surgical minutes.SharePoint is now on a new server, which is linked differently (distributed?) I've used OPENQUERY to get my 'new' query to work;

SELECT *
FROM OPENQUERY ([PORTALWEBDB], 'SELECT
--AllLists
AL.tp_ID AS ALtpID
,AL.tp_WebID as altpwebid
,AL.tp_Title AS ALTitle

[code]....

My data (ie surgical minutes, etc) seems to be in the XML column, AUD.tp_ColumnSet . So I need to parse it out and convert it to INT to maintain consistency with the previous view. How do I do this within the context of the view definition? Here is a representation of the new and old view data copied to excel :

<datetime1>2014-08-14T04:00:00</datetime1><float1>2.000000000000000e+000</float1><float2>4.190000000000000e+002</float2><float3>1.600000000000000e+001</float3><float4>8.110000000000000e+002</float4><sql_variant1 xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:sqltypes="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/sqltypes"

[Code] ....

can't format it to make it look decent. InHouseCases =2, InHouseMinutes=419, OutPatientCases =16, OutPatientMinutes=1230. This corresponds to the new data I can see in the XML column; 2.000000000000000e+000 is indeed 2 and 4.190000000000000e_002 is indeed 419.

Is There A Way To View Stored Procedure, Trigger AndFunction Usage In SQL Server?

Oct 11, 2006

I am maintaining an application where most of the business rules are inTriggers, Stored Procedures and User Defined Functions. When a bugarises, it can get very tedious to debug. Today for example, I wantedto modify a function that was being called by a trigger. The problemis that I don't want to change the function, for fear that it is beingcalled by one of the other SP's or triggers in the database (there arehundreds of them)Essentially, I need a tool that allows me to view where functions andsp's are being referenced from. At the very least, I'd like to performa "full text search" in the database objects, so that let's say I havea function named "fn_doSomething", I can search the schema for thisstring and get all the places where it appears. As you can see, I'm in the dark here. I've never worked on a systemwhere all business rules are at the database level. If you know of atool that does what I describe above, or anything else that wouldfacilitate my life, please let me know! Thanks for your help,Marc

But the statement executes without error as formatted if run directly on the linked server.

Both servers are running 2000 sp 3a. The servers will be converted to 2005/2008 without patching to sp4.
