Update Via SQLDataSource Fails For Record With A Null Value In One Column
Oct 16, 2006
Hi,
I have an updatable DataGrid linked to a SQLDataSource in a web site developed using VS2005. Update works fine unless a value in the existing row is Null. Only one column in the database allows nulls.
Putting a debug stop in the SqlDataSource1_Updating event, I checked the parameter value in the Immediate window and got the following result:
?e.Command.Parameters(16)
{System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter}
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter: {System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter}
DbType: Int32 {11}
Direction: Input {1}
IsNullable: False
ParameterName: "@original_FiresolveJobNo"
Size: 0
SourceColumn: ""
SourceColumnNullMapping: False
SourceVersion: Current {512}
Value: Nothing
Is there a property I can set to generate a suitable Null check clause for the Update statement?
Many Thanks,
Keith.

<!-- Trying
to create a GridView Survey form:
Hi [User]
Do you have these assets?
[Gridview]
Tag Number Response
123
[Yes ] [No] [Comments textbox]
234
[Yes ] [No] [Comments textbox]
Goal: The desire
is for the user to click Yes or No and have the database updated with the
user's name, date, response and any comments.
So far, I have
created SqlDataSource with Select and Update commands, created the gridview and
response buttons, setup the RowCommand and On_Updating Functions.
Problems:1) If I call the update() function for SqlDataSource1 and misuse the Defaultvalue parameters to run the sql, no update is posted to the database.
2) If I use the On_Update function to set the parameter values, I get "Data type mismatch in criteria expression." (Additionally, the On_Update function runs twice which I don't understand)Can anyone tell
me what/why? (and how to fix it?)Sorry for the deluge, but here is the code:

Hi,I'm trying to create a registration page that I've divided into multiple pages (first page for basic details, next page for address, etc.). I insert the record in the first page, and update it in the other pages. I pass the newly created ID to the other pages using the Page.PreviousPage property. In the second page, I have the SqlDataSource configured as "SELECT * FROM [Table] WHERE ID = ?", and the UpdateCommand is "UPDATE .... WHERE ID = ?". In Page_Load, I am updating the SelectCommand to "SELECT ... WHERE ID = " & intID, and the UpdateCommand similarly. The I do a dtlsvw.Databind()But when I go to the next page (the newly created ID is being passed properly), the update doesn't do anything. The new record doesn't contain the values in the detailsview. Can somebody help me out? Thanks,Wild Thing

Hello - I have a column in a table (SQL 2005 EE) with a Data Type of smalldatetime and a Default Value of getdate(). When I insert a record from my webpage the new record contains the correct date via getdate(). However if I update the record from my webpage the date of the record then becomes NULL. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about this from sql server? I am inserting/updating via an formview and ODS, using standard insert/update methods.
Cheers

Hi guys, I have made several Access-based CMSs but now I am using SQL Server. I can read the records but my first attempts at writing are resulting in new records (with new ID) but all the fields are null.
I am posting the data from a form to the same page and an if /then statement catches the flag in the URL and runs the update script below. All the field names are correct.
if request.QueryString("add")<> "" then
Dim rsUpdateEntry
Set rsUpdateEntry = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
rsUpdateEntry.Open "SELECT * from generic_country_info" , oConn, 2, 3
rsUpdateEntry.AddNew
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("title1") = Request.Form("title1")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("body1") = Request.Form("body1")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("title2") = Request.Form("title2")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("body2") = Request.Form("body2")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("title3") = Request.Form("title3")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("body3") = Request.Form("body3")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("title4") = Request.Form("title4")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("body4") = Request.Form("body4")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("title5") = Request.Form("title5")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("body5") = Request.Form("body5")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("image1") = Request.Form("attach1")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("image2") = Request.Form("attach2")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("image3") = Request.Form("attach3")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("image4") = Request.Form("attach4")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("image5") = Request.Form("attach5")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("country") = Request.Form("country")
rsUpdateEntry.Fields("dest_url") = Request.Form("dest_url")
rsUpdateEntry.Update
rsUpdateEntry.Close
Set rsUpdateEntry = Nothing
end if

Been trying to come up with a query to filter-down my sample set intodistinct records. For instance, lets say column1 is a sample set,column2 is the parameter, and column3 is a name and column4 is a type(lets also say there is a fifth column (id) that is an id). What Ineed is one record per type per sample only if type is given, if not,then return that record as well.I've used a subquery to get as close to the desired query is aspossible:select * from table1where id in (select min(id) from table1where column1="A"group by column1, column2)Here's an example of all data for sample "A":1 2 3 4----------A 1 X PA 1 Y PA 1 Z PA 2 WA 3 WA 4 T PA 5 U PA 6 V PA 7 TA 7 UA 7 VI want output :1 2 3-------A 1 X PA 2 WA 3 WA 4 T PA 5 U PA 6 V PA 7 TA 7 UA 7 VExcept the above query will exclude the last two records becausecolumn3 is not 'grouped by'.Basically I need to reduce any 'range' of records per sample (columna) where column4 is not null (ie = 'P'), to only one record andkeeping all others. Thanks in advance:-B

If a Select is done on a column whose data type is nvarchar(16) and contains only numerals (UPC numbers) the select does not return the record.
1. Query with numerals in nvarchar column works as long as multiple records are returned (LIKE '012%')
2. Numeric (INT only one tested) columns works as expected
3. String columns with alpha data works as expected
4. Problem only exist when running in Device Emulator and/or actual device.
5. Same test on desktop app runs as expected.
6. Windows Mobile 6, Vista Ultimate
7. Same results when when connection to device from SSMS
8. SQL Servers comes on

My current proc updates(updates using joins of two or three tables) millions of records as per the condition provided for each department.
However, when the proc fails it writes to a ErrorTable, ERROR_MESSAGE(), ERROR_SEVERITY() and which department has failed.
Since the records are updated keeping the selected departments in loop, I get the department in a temp variable.
Now, I was asked to log the specific record where the failure was occured.
Something like log the identity column value or primary key value which record has failed.

Do I have to use condition split?, then union all?
if in script, I can use update from <tablename> Set column = isnull(column, 'NA'). It's so simple.
I'm also wondering can we run SQL Script against input dataset in a SSIS component?

I've got a table with 6 fields :
EmployeeAccess
(MasterID, LoginID, AccessID, Storage1, Storage2, Storage3)
that needs to be updated using the data in the following spreadsheet
NewEmployeeAccessData
(ID, MasterID, AccessID1, LoginID1)
There is a 1:1 relationship between the two tables..I'm trying to code a pair of update statements on the EmployeeAccess tableĀ (1 for LoginID, 1 for AccessID) with the following logic:
If LoginID is NULL, then Update LoginID with new LoginID1 value,
If LoginID is not null, and Storage1 is NULL then Update Storage1 with New LoginID1 values
If LoginID is not null, and Storage1 is not NULL and Storage2 is NULL then Update Storage2 with New LoginID1 values
etc etc...
The same applies when trying to populate the AccessID column
If AccessID is NULL, then Update AccessID with new AccessID1 value,
If AccessID is not null, and Storage1 is NULL then Update Storage1 with New AccessID1 values
If AccessID is not null, and Storage1 is not NULL and Storage2 is NULL then Update Storage2 with New AccessID1 values
etc etc.
I have no control over the schema of this tableĀ so I'm trying to work the logic on how to update the columns in my table only if the corresponding column data is NULL, else update the next non NULL Storage column.

I want to update two tables in one page. So I created two FormView bound on two SqlDataSource controls, and I create a Update button on the bottom of page. And I writen some codes as below:
btnUpate_Click(object sender, EventArgs e){
sqlDataSource1.Update();
sqlDateSource2.Update();}
But, the records haven't updated.
In SqlDataSource2_Updating() function, I found all the parameters is null.
So, how to modify my code to do it.

Here is what the parameter row of the SQLDataSource looks like.
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="EnteredByText" DefaultValue="Null" Name="EnteredBy" PropertyName="Text"

@EnteredBy Nvarchar(50)=Null
In my WHERE Clause I have:
WHERE (tblClient.EnteredBy = @EnteredBy OR @EnteredBy IS NULL)

I am using a SQLDataSource with Stored Procedures. The Select, Insert and Update all work well. However I cannot get the delete to work. My stored procedures are tested and verified and the parameter names are the same as the source columns. When I try to run the delete an error that the stored procedure expects the parameter @locationStationId, however this value passes properly for the Update command?!? I tried to change the parameter to original_locationStationID to pass the original value, however this result in Null being passed for the parameter.
I cannot understand why this works for Update and passes the location ID, but will not work for DELETE. Can anyone shed any light onto the matter?

If I have a table with 1 or more Nullable fields and I want to make sure that when an INSERT or UPDATE occurs and one or more of these fields are left to NULL either explicitly or implicitly is there I can set these to non-null values without interfering with the INSERT or UPDATE in as far as the other fields in the table?
EXAMPLE:
CREATE TABLE dbo.MYTABLE(
ID NUMERIC(18,0) IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
FirstName VARCHAR(50) NULL,
LastName VARCHAR(50) NULL,
[Code] ....
If an INSERT looks like any of the following what can I do to change the NULL being assigned to DateAdded to a real date, preferable the value of GetDate() at the time of the insert? I've heard of INSTEAD of Triggers but I'm not trying tto over rise the entire INSERT or update just the on (maybe 2) fields that are being left as null or explicitly set to null. The same would apply for any UPDATE where DateModified is not specified or explicitly set to NULL. I would want to change it so that DateModified is not null on any UPDATE.
INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
VALUES('John','Smith',NULL)
INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName)
VALUES('John','Smith')
INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
SELECT FirstName, LastName, NULL
FROM MYOTHERTABLE

Hi -- I'm starting an ASP.NET 2.0 application which contains a page with a checkbox and gridview control on it. In its default state the gridview displays all the records from a table pulled from a SQL Server database (via a SqlDataSource object). When the user checks the checkbox, I want the gridview to display only the records where one of the columns is not null. But I've been unable to construct the WHERE clause of the SQLDataSource object correctly. I see that I can hard-code the SqlDataSource object so that the column to be filtered is always NULL or always NOT NULL. But I want this filtering to be more dynamic such that the decision to show all or non-null records happens at run-time. Should I be using two SqlDataSource objects -- one for the NOT NULL condition and one for the "all records" condition? Then when the user checks the checkbox, the gridview would be configured to point to the appropriate SqlDataSource object. (???) Seems like a bit of overhead with that approach. I'm hoping there's a more elegant way to get this done. Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks in advance. Bill

I'm developing a web app using VS2005. I have a webpage with panel containing a gridview populated by a SQLdatasource. The SQLdatasource in turn is populated by a stored procedure that can take up to 5 parameters. The user types in up to 5 separate words (searchterms) in a text box which are then parsed and passed to the stored proc in the datasource which performs a fulltext search. The gridview then becomes visible. My problem is that unless the user types in 5 searchterms (no less), the gridview returns zero rows. 5 searchterms returns the proper results. Somehow, I need to be able to pass in null or empty values for unneeded parameters.
I've tested the stored procedure in Query Analyzer and from within the SQLdatasource configuration (using Test Query) using 0 up to 5 parameters and it works fine, so that's not my problem. Here's the code that runs after the user types in their search term(s) and presses a button:Public Sub FTSearch_Command(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As CommandEventArgs) Handles btnFullText.Command
Dim x As Integer
pnlFullText.Visible = Falsefiltertext = Replace(txtSearchTxt.Text, "'", "''")
If Not filtertext Is Nothing Then
filtertext = filtertext.Trim
Else
Return
End IfDim arrayString() As String = filtertext.Split(" ")
Dim length As Integer = arrayString.LengthFor x = 0 To (length - 1)
If Not arrayString(x) Is Nothing ThenSelect Case x
Case 0 : lblFTParm1.Text = arrayString(0)Case 1 : lblFTParm2.Text = arrayString(1)
Case 2 : lblFTParm3.Text = arrayString(2)Case 3 : lblFTParm4.Text = arrayString(3)
Case 4 : lblFTParm5.Text = arrayString(4)
End Select
End If
Next
pnlFullText.Visible = "True"
End Sub
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I am attempting to create search parameters for a gridview control and I am experiencing a small issue. When I get to a date parameter I am unable to display null values.
I setup a sqldatasource and created the parameters below to handle the selections for minimum date required and the maximum date required for the date columns in the database. The problem is I do not know how to display null dates.
Is there a way to incorporate something into the search page to show null dataes?
Sql Where Clause 1 WHERE (LSS_Requests.TypeCode = @TypeCode) AND (LSS_Requests.PersonNo LIKE '%' + @PersonNo + '%') AND

The problem I'm having is described below all this code.---------------------------------------------------------My content page has a SqlDataSource: <asp:SqlDataSource ID="sqlGetUserInfo" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:RemoteNotes_DataConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT [UserFirstName], [UserLastName] FROM [Users] WHERE ([UserGUID] = @UserGUID)"
onselecting="sqlGetUserInfo_Selecting"> <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="UserGUID" Type="String" /> </SelectParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource> -----------------------------------------------------Inside my OnSelecting event, I have: protected void sqlGetUserInfo_Selecting(object sender, SqlDataSourceSelectingEventArgs e) { sqlGetUserInfo.SelectParameters["UserGUID"].DefaultValue = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey.ToString(); } ---------------------------------------------------------------------And, inside my Page_Load, the relevant code is: //String strUserFirstName = ((DataView)sqlGetUserInfo.Select(DataSourceSelectArguments.Empty)).Table.Rows[0]["UserFirstName"].ToString();
DataView dvUserDetails = (DataView)sqlGetUserInfo.Select(DataSourceSelectArguments.Empty);
if ((dvUserDetails != null) && (dvUserDetails.Count > 0)) { DataRow drUserInfo = dvUserDetails.Table.Rows[0]; lblHelloMessage.Text = "Hello, " + drUserInfo["UserFirstName"].ToString() + ((drUserInfo["UserLastName"].ToString() == "") ? "" : " " + drUserInfo["UserLastName"].ToString()); } ---------------------Now, here's the problem. My "if" statement is never executing because "dvUserDetails" is null. However, when I break the execution and put awatch on the actual Select() statement, it shows a DataView with the correct return rows! You can see the commented line where I tried tobypass the DataView thing (just as a test), but I get an object reference is null error.The weird thing is that it was working fine one minute, then started getting "funky" (working, then not, then working, then not), and now it just doesn't work at all. All thiswithout me changing one bit of my code because I was checking out some UI flow and stopping and restarting the application. I've tracked downthe temporary files directory the localhost web server runs from, deleted all those files, and cleaned my solution. I've even triedrebooting, and nothing seems to make it work again.My relevant specs are VS2008 9.0.21022.8 RTM on Vista Enterprise x64.

I am using ASP.NET 3.5 with SQLDataSource, when a record is inserted is there a way to retreive the newly created GUID value in a field?
I am currently using SELECT @NewID = SCOPE_IDENTITY() to retreive the newly created record unique ID field, but I need the secondary field GUID field's value instead in this case.
Thank you.

I am getting this error: "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'OrderID', table 'outman.outman.Contact'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails." -- But my value is not null. I did a response.write on it and it show the value. Of course, it would be nice if I could do a breakpoint but that doesn't seem to be working. I'll attach a couple of images below of my code, the error, and the breakpoint error.
