Updating Data In One Table Based On Other Table Data
Apr 20, 2003
I'm not sure if this could be done, but if anyone has any insight on how to do this please let me know...
Currently, I have a table that has a field of Categories. I recently created a Category table in which each category has it's own ID. I need to replace the Data that was in my original table with the new ID's based on the actual category name... Is there any way of doing this without manaul data entry?

I am very new to SQL Server 2005. I have created a package to load data from a flat delimited file to a database table. The initial load has worked. However, in the future, I will have flat files used to update the table. Some of the records will need to be inserted and some will need to update existing rows. I am trying to do this from SSIS. However, I am very lost as to how to do this.
Any suggestions?

I am trying to update a table in one database with data from a temporary table which i created in the tempdb.
I want to update field1 in the table with the tempfield1 from the #temp_table
The code looks something like this:
Use master
UPDATE [dbname].dbo.table
SET [dbname].dbo.table.field1 = [tempdb].dbo.#temp_table.tempfield1
WHERE ( [dbname].dbo.table.field2= [tempdb].dbo.#temp_table.tempfield2
AND [dbname].dbo.table.field3= [tempdb].dbo.#temp_table.tempfield3
AND [dbname].dbo.table.field4= [tempdb].dbo.#temp_table.tempfield4)
I get the following error:

I have a table called MasterSkillList which is a list of skills and attributes, eg: [Appraise, INT], [Bluff, CHA] etc
I have a table called Classes, which is a list of all classes available (and some details which are irrelevant), eg: [Fighter], [Assassin] etc.
I also have a table called ClassSkills which holds a list of classes and their applicable skills, eg: [Assassin, Bluff], [Assassin, Open Lock], [Fighter, Appraise], [Fighter, Bluff] etc.
What I have is a gridview which shows all my classes from the class table. i want to be able to select a class on that gridview and create a checkbox list of all available skills that are NOT allready associated with that class. Eg: assassin has bluff and open lock, so those two skills shouldn't appear on my checkbox list. So i want to show all the skill from the master skills list, excluding all the skills the selected class allready has.
Alternatively, It would be better if there was a way to display all the skills in existance on my checkboxlist and the ones that class allready has to be checked. Any suggestions?
Here's the query I have:
SELECT MasterSkillsList.SkillFROM ClassSkills INNER JOIN MasterSkillsList ON ClassSkills.Skill = MasterSkillsList.SkillWHERE (MasterSkillsList.Skill <> ClassSkill.Skill)
Edit:
I just added the following sql query, but when i run it i get no results even though it should show everything except 2 skills. Have I written it wrong?
SELECT SkillFROM MasterSkillsListWHERE (NOT EXISTS (SELECT Skill FROM ClassSkills WHERE (ClassName = @ClassName)))

I am relatively new to SQL and am having trouble with an update. I know I cannot use a join update and have to use subquery. I am not sure of the syntax on how to do this. Below is basically what I want to do, but cannot figure out how to do it with a subquery. Any help would be appreciated.
update revisedapps
set alternateapp = t.alternateapp
from tempalternateapps t
join revisedapps r on t.appname = r.softwarename

I'm an sql/SSMSE novice, but have successfully connected to my sql database on a webserver.
My question is: Can I update the table data "directly" using SSMSE's interface, or do i have to run an sql update statement? (By updating table data directly, i mean: can i view the contents of a table, and simply edit the data in a field, like with in an MS Access table?) If I can update the data "directly," how does one do that?
Thanks a lot!

I have a table in SQL server which has two rows. One has an ID of 'Bag CL55412'. Another has an ID of 'Bag CL55412-Cpy'. The Price for the first one is $99.99. I want to make the price for the second one 2% more & $.99 more.
The data looks like this
IDChannelPriceCompanyID
Bag CL5541299.99111
Bag CL55412-Cpy102.99500
The SQL to select that formula looks like this.
SELECT [ID]
,[ChannelPrice]
,(CEILING([ChannelPrice]*1.02)+.99)
,CompanyID
FROM [SC].[dbo].[Product]
WHERE ID like '%CL55412%'
To Update, I can think of something like this, but it will update based on itself, not a different row in the table.
UPDATE [SC].[dbo].[Product] SET ChannelPrice=(CEILING([ChannelPrice]*1.02)+.99)
How would I get it to update as I want it to? The origin CompanyID will always be 111 & the destination company ID will always be 500 for all of the respective rows that need to be updated

Hi,
I could use some help on how to save the result of my data-flow in an existing table.
I have created a data flow. I have no trouble storing the result of the flow in a new table. But I'm trying to store the result of my data flow in an existing table. (The flow involves fuzzy grouping, and i would like to store the result in the original table on which the fuzzy grouping was performed). But I cannot get it to work.
I can select the existing table as OLE DB destination. I can write an SQL to manipulate this table, but how do i address the result of the flow in the SQL?
Help is welcome here!

I have a table with a datetime field 'TheDate'. Currently dates are stored as 'mm-dd-yyyy 00:00:00'. Is there a way to get just the month, day and year parts, '01/01/2008' into the field without changing the field data type to varchar? I'm asking because when I do this:
declare @MyDate as datetime
set @MyDate = '04/02/2008 18:00:00'
select substring(convert(varchar,@MyDate,101),1,10)
I get '04/02/2008', but when I do this:
update TheTable
set TheDate = substring(convert(varchar,TheDate,101),1,10)
I'm still getting a date in the format 'mm-dd-yyyy 00:00:00' stored in the table. I'd like to be able to lose the time portion, but I'd like to be able to keep the datetime datatype for date math purposes. Can it be done?

I'm trying to move my current use of an sql 2000 db to sql 2005.
I need to update a table definition (to change a field to an Identity)
I'm getting a dialog box (in SQL server management studio) on save saying :
'xxxx' table
- Saving Definition Changes to tables with large amounts of data could
take a considerable amount of time. While changes are being
saved, table data will not be accessible.
I press 'Yes' to the dialog box.
After 35 seconds, I get another dialog box saying:
'xxxx' table
- Unable to modify table.
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
Well, the server is responding and I can query that talbe and other, I
can add/delete rows to other columns. I can modify other
(smaller) tables.
Any ideas where I can change this timeout?

Hey,First, sorry if this post appear twice, because, I can not find my postrecently send, trying to post it once again.I'm out of ideas, so, I thought, will search help here again :(I'm trying to prepare a view for ext. app. This is in normal cases veryeasy, but what if the view structure should be dynamic?!Here is my point (I will siplify the examples).I have a table:create table t_data (id bigint identity (1,1) not null,valvarchar(10) not null, data varchar(100) not nullconstraint [PK_t_data] primary key clustered(id) with fillfactor = 90 on [PRIMARY] )goinsert into t_data (val, data) values('1111111111','1234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz 1234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz67890abcdefghij klmnoprstuvwxyz')insert into t_data (val, data) values('2222222222','1234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz 1234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz12345abcdefghij klmnoprstuvwxyz')insert into t_data (val, data) values('3333333333','12345abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz12345 67890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz1234567890abcdefghij klmnoprstuvwxyz')insert into t_data (val, data) values('4444444444','67890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz12345 67890abcdefg12345hijklmnoprstuvwxyz67890abcdefghij klmnoprstuvwxyz')insert into t_data (val, data) values('5555555555','1230abcdefghijklmnoprst12345uvwxyz1 234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz67890abcdefghijk lmnoprstuvwxyz')gocreate table t_dataVal (id bigint identity (1,1) not null,valvarchar(10) not null, fill varchar(4) not nullconstraint [PK_t_dataVal] primary key clustered(id) with fillfactor = 90 on [PRIMARY] )goinsert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('1111111111','AAAA')insert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('2222222222','KKKK')insert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('3333333333','DDDD')insert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('4444444444','ZZZZ')insert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('5555555555','CCCC')gocreate table t_conf (id bigint identity (1,1) not null, start int not null, length int not null, description varchar(20) not null, constraint [PK_t_conf] primary key clustered(id) with fillfactor = 90 on [PRIMARY] )goinsert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (1,10,'value_1')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (11,3,'value_2')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values(55,15,'value_3')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (33,2,'value_4')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (88,1,'value_5')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (56,7,'value_6')goNow here is the issue:table t_conf contain data, which can be modified by user. The user isseting the appropriate values. Now, there should be a view, which returns:- as headers (collumn names) this what is defined in description columnof t_conf (for example: value_1, value_2 ... value_6)- as values, substrings of all data from t_data, cutted with start andlength values for appropriate decription from t_conf.- first two columns of view, should be column val and fill of t_dataValtableSo the effect should be like this:valfillvalue_1value_2value_3value_4value_5value61111111111AAAA1234567890abc....2222222222KKKK1234567890abc....3333333333DDDD12345abcdefgh....4444444444ZZZZ67890abcdefgh....5555555555CCCC1230abcdefghi....of course, for all other value_x should be the appropriate substringsshown.Sounds simple, hm?Well, I'm trying to do this, since yesterday evening, and can not :(In real life, the call of view/function might happend a lot.The table t_data might have around 4000 records, but the data string islonger (around 3000 characters).Application, might acess a udf, which returns table, and I was focusingin that. Was trying, to create local temp table in function, to insert values, using cursor over t_conf.Unfortunately, everything what I get, is just a vertical representationof the data, and I need it horizontal :(The other problem in function is, that I can not use exec() (wll known)so I can not even create a table, dynamicly, using as column names description value from table t_conf,and as size of field length from this table.Sorry, that the description is maybe not exactly for my problem, butthis is because I'm not even sure, which way to use :(any help will be appreciated!Thank You - Matik

Hi,
I have a Users table that I use for membership. I am using username varchar(30) as the primary key for this table since username will always be unique.
The question I have is regarding how SQL Server actually stores data:
I see that when I add users, they are always stored alphabetically sorted on username.
I was expecting that all users will appear on the users table in the order they were added.
Example: I have 3 users (john, jonah, wilson). Now I added 4 user with username='bob'
If I execute select * from users, it returns me (bob, john, jonah, wilson). Look bob has become the first row of the table.
My question: Is Sql server moving 3 older rows to make room for 'bob' and it is also rebuilding part of the index due this new username 'bob'?
If this is the case, then it will have big impact if I have 100K users and I add one user that becomes firstrow. In that case 99,999 rows will have to move.
Bottom line, insert, delete will be very expensive.
I know sql server keeps data physically sorted on PK. But I am concerned here since rows are losing the order in which they were inserted.
Thanks

Hi
I am having a problem in auditing the column data in tables. My requirement is i have write a trigger which is capable of auditing the columns which are going to be added in the future also with out using dynamic SQL.is there any way to do so.
I feel if i can get the column data based on ordinal position then it is possible.
Can any body suggest.
My set Up is like this
I have a base_table to be audited.
I have a Audit_spec table which contains name of the table and columns to be audited.
And Audit table which actually captures the table name, column name ,old value and new value.
I have to audit only those columns in the Audit_spec spec.
If schema changes(Like new column added) happens to base_table and I want that column to be audited.with out any changes to my trigger code i should handle the newly added column ..

Hello All
I am trying to figure out if what i am attempting to do is possible and whether or not my approach is wrong to begin with.
I am trying to build a custom report for our accounting system which is Traverse from Open systems. This is what i have done in the stored procedure thus far
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
ALTER PROCEDURE rptArFLSalesByCustItemized_sp
@custId pCustID,
@dateFrom datetime,
@dateThru datetime,
@itemIdFrom pItemId,
@itemIdThru pItemId
as
set nocount on
-- define some variables for previous year
declare @LYqty int, @LyAmt money, @LYfrom datetime, @LYthru datetime
-- set defaults
SET @itemIdFrom=ISNULL(@itemIdFrom,(SELECT MIN(itemId) FROM tblInItem))
SET @itemIdThru=ISNULL(@itemIdThru,(SELECT MAX(itemId) FROM tblInItem))
SET @LYfrom=DATEADD(YEAR,-1,@dateFrom)
SET @LYthru=DATEADD(YEAR, -1, @dateThru)
-- create small temp table to hold customer info
Create Table #tmpArCustInfo
(
custId pCustID,
custName VARCHAR (30),
)
-- populate customer temp table with info
Insert into #tmpArCustInfo
select custId, custName
from tblArCust
WHERE custId = @custId
-- create a temp table to hold the Data for each Item
Create Table #tmpArSalesItemized
(
itemId pItemId,
productLine VARCHAR (12),
pLineDesc VARCHAR (35),
descr VARCHAR (35),
LYQtySold int,
LYTDQtySold int,
QtySold int,
LYTDsales money,
totalSales money,
LastInvDate datetime,
)
-- populate the temp table with all of the inventory items
insert into #tmpArSalesItemized
select ii.itemId, ii.productLine, ip.Descr, ii.Descr, 0,0,0,0,0, NULL
from tblInItem ii, tblInProductLine ip
where ip.productLine = ii.productLine
AND ii.itemId BETWEEN @itemIdFrom AND @itemIdThru
-- update table with this years quantities
update #tmpArSalesItemized
SET QtySold = (select SUM(QtyOrdSell) from tblArHistDetail hd
where TransId IN (select TransId from tblArHistHeader where custId = @custId)
AND orderDate IN (select OrderDate from tblArHistHeader where OrderDate BETWEEN @dateFrom AND @dateThru)
AND hd.partId BETWEEN @itemIdFrom AND @itemIdThru
GROUP BY hd.partId
)
-- Return the temp tables results
select * from #tmpArSalesItemized, #tmpArCustInfo
drop table #tmpArSalesItemized, #tmpArCustInfo
return
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF
GO
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
My problems begin where i want to start updating all of the Qty's of the QtySold field. I have managed to get it to write the same sum in every field but i cannot figure out how to update each row based on the sum of the qty found for that item in the tblArHistDetails table, trouble is too that there is no reference to the custId in that table either. The custId resides in tblArHistHeader and is linked to the details table via the TransId column. So really i need to update many rows based on criteria from 2 other tables.
Can anyone please help? I dont have a clue how to make this work, and most of what i have learned about sql thus far has been from opening other stored procs etc in the accounting system and just reading to see how the developers have done things.
Thanks
Jamie

Hi,
DONT KNOW IF IT IS POSSIBLE.. PLEASE SUGGEST.
Currently working on a upload module where in the data from excel file is imported to the destination tables. Data in the excel sheet comes in phases. All excel sheet columns data don't come at first shot. The excel sheet's data is dumped into temporary tables which inturn is looped using cursor's and gets finally updated to the actual tables.
Now, the problem I am facing is how do I update columns of the actual table with the data (i.e NON NULL values) available in the temporary table without tampering the data allready present in actual table.
Ideally what required is, update the actual table column values with the corresponding columns of temporary table ONLY for Non NUll column values of temporary table.
Temporary and Destination tables have 85 columns each. I don't want to write 85 update queries.
The scenario which I am facing is given below with 2 columns as an example.
1. Table 1 :- tbl_source (Temporary Table) has two columns src_Col1 & src_Col2
2. Table 2 :- tbl_destination (Actual Table) has two columns dest_Col1 & des_Col2
Scenario -1
---------------
tbl_Source Sample Data (after excel import to the temporary table)
------------------------
src_Col1 src_Col2
------------------
50 NULL
tbl_Destination Sample Data
------------------------
dest_Col1 dest_Col2
------------------
50 NULL
Scenario -2
---------------
tbl_Source Sample Data
------------------------
src_Col1 src_Col2
------------------
NULL 100
tbl_Destination Sample Data
------------------------
dest_Col1 dest_Col2
------------------
50 100
One update query which handles both scenarios.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Regards

I have a table dbo.Sales that contains all sales records. There is a column in that table called ItemNumber that I'd like to match with ItemNumber in a flat file and update the ItemCost based on the ItemCost column in the flat file.
So while there will be many sales records for each ItemNumber, I need to loop through and update the ItemCost in that sales record based on the corresponding ItemCost in the flat file. Does this make sense? I really need this for court and I can't figure out how to do it. I took a SQL course about 7 years ago but have forgotten everything.
Database Name: BTData
Database Table: dbo.Sales
Database Columns: ItemNumber (match on this), ItemCost (update this)
FlatFile Name: InventoryCosts.txt
FlatFile Columns: ItemNumber, ItemCost
There will be many sales records for each ItemNumber in the database table. I need to update each one with correct cost based on the item number and cost mapping from flat file.

I am putting together an invoice for my company. I have a text box describing each section of the invoice, followed by a table to list out the charges. I am using multiple tables based on what type of charge the client is receiving.
I would like to hide each section if there are no items purchased of that type. I can do this with the table using the expression "=CountRows() < 1", but I do not know how to refer to that table (call it Tablix1 for the sake of discussion) for the text box. I've tried using a ReportItems function as my basis, without success.

I'm trying to load data from old SQL server 2000 to new SQL server 2014. I need to do a checksum to check if all the source data is loaded in the target database(SQL server 2014). I've created the insert statement for the same which works. I need to use checksum to make sure all the source rows are loaded in the target table. I haven't done checksum before.
Here is my insert statement:
INSERT INTO [Test].[dbo].[Order_tab]
([rec_id]
,[date_loaded]
,[Name1]
,[Name2]
,[Address1]
,[Address2]
[code]....

Lets say I have a table, tblPersons
FirstName | LastName | DateofBirth
----------------------------------------
Thomas | Alva Edison | 10-10-2015
Benjamin | Franklin | 10-10-2015
Thomas | More | 11-10-2015
Thomas | Jefferson | 12-10-2015
Suppose today's date is 09-10-2015 in (dd-MM-yyyy format), I want to perform a query in such a way that I should get the data from the table above WHERE DateofBirth is tomorrow, so I could get the following result.
FirstName | LastName | DateofBirth
----------------------------------------
Thomas | Alva Edison | 10-10-2015
Benjamin | Franklin | 10-10-2015

I have a results table that was created from many different sources in SSIS. I have done calculations and created derived columns in it. I am trying to figure out if there is a way to remove duplicate rows from this table without first writing it to a temp sql table and then parsing through it to remove them.
each row has a like key in a column - I would like to remove like rows keeping specific columns in the resulting row based on the data in this key field.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Ad.

l've the following situation,
l've some excel files controlled by Vendor which changing frequently. The only thing does not change is the header name of each column.
So my question is, is there any way to create a new table based on the excel file selected including the column name in SSIS? So that l can use the data reader as source to select those columns l am interested on and start the integration.
Thanks.
Regards,
Yong Boon, Lim
p/s : The excel header is at the row 7.
