I know i can do it through enterprise managaer, but I want to see if I can do it from query analyzer or some script to add columns without having to recreate the table. Or a way to save off the data and recreate the table then placing data back in? I hope that makes sense. I am thinking of this from the sens of doing all updates through source safe

Updating A Column With A Count From Another Table?
May 18, 2014My goal is to with one update statement, fill TABLE1.counter (currently empty) with the total count of TABLE2.e# (employee). Also, if TABLE1.e# isn't in TABLE2.e# then it sets it to "0" (TABLE1.e# 8 and 9 should have a counter of 0) This is for sqlplus.
e.g. TABLE2:

Feb 27, 2008I'm looking for some performance assistance on updating a column value in a table that contains approximately 50 million rows. I have a permanent table in another database that has the key column and value to be set. My query is listed below, but I'm afraid it will run quite awhile. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
update mytable
set column2 = b.column2
from mytable as a
join mytable1 as b
on a.column1 = b.column1
There is a one to one relationship between the two tables.

One more question about this Custom Calendar table I'm creating. I have a column called "IsWorkdays" which indicates if the day represented by a row is a workday or not. For our purposes, I also need to create a row that accumulates those numbers by month. So, if it is the 3rd workday of the month, this column would have a 3. This is beyond my current T-SQL ability. Does anyone know how to do this?

table name: USERS
field names : LName, FName, EmpID
other table name:PERSONNEL
field names : (same as USERS)
The EmpID column in my USERS table is blank (I have 30 records in the table.)
I would like to update the USERS.EmpID table with the PERSONNEL.EmpID data
how would I do this or what would the code be?

May 12, 2007Hello, I am pretty new with SQL Server 2005.
I have installed SQL Server Express Edition. I have migrated a set of tables from Oracl10g (by using Microsoft's Migration Tool Kit).While I am trying the following simple update command, the session hangs and it never finishes !!!!!!!!!!!!

The table has a few constraints and a couple of indices in place.
Then I create another table (but no contraints or indices), just copy the data from the problematic one and the update WORKS (in msecs) :
update pos_station_new set pos_key = 1 where staff_key = 1105

Is there any way to tell if the table (any table in SQL Server) is corrupted or not ?
How can I tell if a session is waiting for something and what is that something ?

Database Automatically Creates Xxx_Temp Table While Modifying / Updating Table Structure .

I am new to the SQL Server 2005 development.
From last 1 week or so, i have been facing very strange problem with my sql server 2005s database
which is configured and set on the hosting web server. Right now for managing my sql server 2005 database,
i am using an web based Control Panel developed by my hosting company.
Problem i am facing is that, whenever i try to modify (i.e. add new columns) tables in the database,
it gives me error saying that,
"There is already an object named 'PK_xxx_Temp' in the database. Could not create constraint. See previous errors.
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider".
where xxx is the table name.
I have done quite a bit research on the problem and have also searched on the net for solution but still
the problem persist.

However, in the future, I will have flat files used to update the table. Some of the records will need to be inserted and some will need to update existing rows. I am trying to do this from SSIS. However, I am very lost as to how to do this.

Oct 19, 2007I am trying to update a table in one database with data from a temporary table which i created in the tempdb.
I want to update field1 in the table with the tempfield1 from the #temp_table
The code looks something like this:

Aug 29, 2007I’m a complete newbie so forgive this question. If i have 2 tables Table 1 has the columns for NNAME, PHNUM, SSN, DOB, JOB, UPDATED however the Job description is emptyTable2 has the columns for SSN and JOB
The question is, how I write an update statement that looks at the SSN in table2 matches it to SSN in table 1 and fills in the job description for that person in table1 and adds yes to the UPDATED field.

I have a temp table called #JOB which i know contains data (i can select from it and it shows about 30 rows). The problem is when i am trying to update another table with the contents of the temp table...........query analyser tells me no rows have been updated.
here is the code i am using:

FROM #JOB

Questions On Key Column In Case Table And Key Time Column In Nested Table Using Time Series Algorithm

I am confused on key column of case table and key time column of nested table by using Time Series algorithm.
In my case, the case table structure is as below:
Territory key text (the ID is actually dimrisk_key, in this case, I use the name column binding to combine the Territory column of case table Dimrisks),
While the nested table structure is as below:
Cal_month key time (in this case, actually the ID is dimdate_key, again, I used name column bining property to bind the Cal_month to the ID)
So my question is, as the key column of case table has been set to be Territory, as a result, does the model training still cover all the cases (rows) based on the ID of the table?
Also, in the nested table, as the key time column has been set to Cal_month rather than Dimdate_key of the nested table, as a result, would the single series based on the cal_month?

Sep 23, 2015If on the source I have a new column, the script generated by SqlPackage.exe recreates the table on the background with moving the data into a temp storage. If the table is big, such approach can cause issues.
Example of the script is below: in the source project I added columns [MyColumn_LINE_1] and [MyColumn_LINE_5].
Is there any way I can make it generating an alter statement instead?

I am trying to insert values into a temp table, using values from the table I copied the structure from, like this:
SELECT TOP 1 * INTO #tbl_User_Temp FROM tbl_User
TRUNCATE TABLE #tbl_User_Temp
INSERT INTO #tbl_User_Temp EXECUTE UserPersist_GetUserByCriteria @Gender = 'Male', @Culture = 'en-GB'
The SP UserPersist_GetByCriteria does a
"SELECT * FROM tbl_User WHERE gender = @Gender AND culture = @Culture",
so why am I receiving this error when both tables have the same
structure?
The error is being reported as coming from UserPersist_GetByCriteria on the "SELECT * FROM tbl_User" line.

For the length of Column ID is not enough, So I want to alter its length.The alter statement is:
ALTER TABLE student ALTER COLUMN ID CHAR(20)
For the table student is referenced by table score, the alter statement can not alter the column of the table student, and the SQL Server DBMS give the errors.
But, I can manually alter the length of the column ID in SQL SERVER Management Studio. How to alter column length of the master table(student) along with the slave table(score)?

DB Design :: Table Partitioning Using Reference Table Data Column
Oct 7, 2015I have a requirement of table partitioning. we have 10 years of data on a table which is 30 billion up rows on 2005 server we are upgrading it to 2014. we have to keep 7 years of data. there is no keys on table or date column. since its a huge amount of data and many users its slow down the process speed. we are thinking to do partition on 7 years for Quarterly based. but as i said there is no date column on table we have to use reference table to get date. is there a way i can do the partitioning with out adding date column on table? also does partition will make query faster?
I have think three ways to do it.
1. leave as it is.
2. 7 years partition on one server
3. 3 years partition on server1 and 4 years partition on server2 (for 4 years is snapshot better?)
