Updating A View

Feb 3, 2004

I don't know if this is possible but, I have a view that retrieves data between 2 dates. The data is then exported to an Excel spreadsheet. My question is this: Is there some way I can automatically change the date in my alter view window? For example, I want to extract the data at the beginning of each month for the previous month. Then whoever is looking at the data can then refresh every month to get the previous months data. I want something that will automatically update my view every month with the previous month, without me having to go in and physically doing it. Is there a way, and how complicated would it be?
Thanks.

Updating My View Changes My View Content

Feb 17, 2006

I have this view in SQL server:

CREATE VIEW dbo.vwFeat
AS
SELECT dbo.Lk_Feat.Descr, dbo.Lk_Feat.Price, dbo.Lk_Feat.Code, dbo.SubFeat.SubNmbr
FROM dbo.Lk_Feat INNER JOIN
dbo.SubFeat ON dbo.Lk_Feat.Idf = dbo.SubFeat.Idt

When ever I open using SQL Entreprise manager to edit it by adding or removing a field i inserts Expr1,2.. and I don t want that. The result I get is:

SELECT dbo.Lk_Feat.Descr AS Expr1, dbo.Lk_Feat.Price AS Expr2, dbo.Lk_Feat.Code AS Expr3, dbo.SubFeat.SubNmbr AS Expr4
FROM dbo.Lk_Feat INNER JOIN
dbo.SubFeat ON dbo.Lk_Feat.Idf = dbo.SubFeat.Idt

I don t want Entreprise manager to generate the Expr fields since I use the real fields in my application.
Thanks for help

Updating Across A Partitioned View

Mar 7, 2012

This post concerns updating across a partitioned view, and not unlike others about this subject I am getting this error:

Msg 4436, Level 16, State 12, Line 1
UNION ALL view 'dbII.dbo.MyTable' is not updatable because a partitioning column was not found.

I am aware of the rules for defining a partitioning column, but interpreting them may have beaten me. So perhaps I haven't abided by all the rules. How to spot which one(s) from the view and table definitions? I suspect the CHECK constraint does not allow the ASCII function, but I can't see how to avoid using it given SYSCODE entries in one table are like "[A-Z]%" and in the other are like "[0-9]%".

Otherwise, I suspect it is because one of the tables has, by legacy, a text column and the view is casting it to varchar(MAX). I also suspect it is because there's a second column with a unique index. These aren't mentioned in the rules (are they?).

Here's the view definition:

SELECT SYSCODE, COL2, CAST(COMMENTS AS varchar(MAX)) AS COMMENTS
FROM dbo.MYTABLE
UNION ALL
SELECT SYSCODE, COL2, COMMENTS
FROM OTHERDATABASE.dbo.MYTABLE AS MYTABLE_1

And here are the table definitions:

-- Table in the database where view is defined
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MYTABLE](
[SYSCODE] [char](12) NOT NULL,

View Not Updating With Table Schema Changes

I notice that when I change my table schema, the view that was created based on the older schema remains using the older schema, and when I try running it, it will give me error.

I assume that's because the view is still using the old execution plan? Is there a way to force an automatic recompilation of execution plans for all views when there is a change to the underlying table?

Thanks!

Updating Grid View That Has Dropdown Lists

Jun 28, 2007

I have gridview bound with SqlDataSource control. One of the grid columns is a dropdown list which is populated programatically, (the gridview has template column with edittemplate field with dropdown list), dropdown Value contains of course collection of IDs.Please tell me how to declare UpdateCommand which will update the row with the dropdown list. The problem is with parameter regarding the column with dropdown list. When i declare this parameter and bind it to SelectedValue property of the dropdownlist from edittemplate tag - it doesnt work, because datasource control cannot see this dropdown list. So, how am i supposed to declare the ID of the row being updated in <updateParameters>? Thanks in advance!

Updating A Table By Both Inserting And Updating In The Data Flow

However, in the future, I will have flat files used to update the table. Some of the records will need to be inserted and some will need to update existing rows. I am trying to do this from SSIS. However, I am very lost as to how to do this.

Any suggestions?

Alter View / Create View

Aug 14, 2000

I had given one of our developers create view permissions, but he wants to also modify views that are not owned by him, they are owned by dbo.

I ran a profiler trace and determined that when he tries to modify a view using query designer in SQLem or right clicks in SQLem on the view and goes to properties, it is performing a ALTER VIEW. It does the same for dbo in a trace (an ALTER View). He gets a call failed and a permission error that he doesn't have create view permissions, object is owned by dbo, using both methods.

If it is doing an alter view how can I set permissions for that and why does it give a create view error when its really doing an alter view? Very confusing.

Hi, I'm new to ASP.Net quite new to C# (My first attempt at a database website) and am trying to get a button to add "1" to "int" value called "Comments" a each time its pressed basically counting each time a comment is added. This is probably a Noobie type stupid question but I'm stuck.  This is the code I have so far for my Button_Click event:  protected void Button_Click(object sender, EventArgs e){        SqlDataSource CommentCountDataSource = new SqlDataSource();        CommentCountDataSource.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Main_Site_DatabaseConnectionString1"].ToString();        CommentCountDataSource.UpdateCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.Text;        CommentCountDataSource.SelectCommand = "SELECT (ModID, DateTimeLastComment, Comments) FROM Mods";        CommentCountDataSource.UpdateCommand = "UPDATE Mods SET (DateTimeLastComment=@DateTimeLastComment, Comments=@Comments) WHERE ModID=@ModID"; //How do i get the Where to use the query string info?                CommentCountDataSource.UpdateParameters.Add("DateTimeLastComment", DateTime.Now.ToString());                CommentCountDataSource.UpdateParameters.Add("Comments", "10");     //"10" is just a value to test I'll change this to add "1" once I figure how.        CommentCountDataSource.Update();}  Sorry if I'm using the wrong lingo but as I say I'm new. If my code is a mile off then please can you send me in the right direction of some code that works.Thanks in advance if anyone can help me. Cheers,Alan

On the form it is possible to change a record, delete a record and add a record. These are all done in the local table.

The question, how do i send these changes back to the database. Currently it deletes the lot and copies all the local table values in. How do only do the affected row, UPDATE, INSERT etc

Updating With ADO.net

Mar 25, 2008

Hey

I have an ASP application that uses a stored procedure and ADO.net to update a sql server data file. The problem is I know the code is working, I don't have any errors with the ADO, no exceptions are caught. I can use the same basic code to insert a record using a different procedure. It is the update procedure that does not carry through.

So, I know I have a connection, the procedure works using the query builder directly so the procedure works, but when I run the code, I get no errors and no update to the datafile. I am not even sure how to trouble shoot this since I don't have an error to look up.

C# Code:-------------

private void UpdateIssue()
{
DateTime date = new DateTime();
date = Convert.ToDateTime(this.txtDate.Text);

//edit record in HelpDeskIssuesTbl here.

SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection("Data Source...");
SqlCommand comUpdateTicket = new SqlCommand("sp_UpdateHelpDeskIssues", con);
comUpdateTicket.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
comUpdateTicket.Parameters.Add("@IssueID", this.GridView1.SelectedIndex.ToString());
comUpdateTicket.Parameters.Add("@EmpID", this.ddlEmployee.SelectedValue.ToString());
comUpdateTicket.Parameters.Add("@Date", date.ToShortDateString());
comUpdateTicket.Parameters.Add("@StatusID", this.ddlStatus.SelectedValue.ToString());

try
{
con.Open();
comUpdateTicket.ExecuteNonQuery();

}
catch (Exception ex)
{
this.lblMessage.Text = "Data save error: " + ex.Message.ToString();
this.pnlMessage.Visible = true;
}
finally
{
con.Close();
}
}

----------------------------------------------------
dbo.sp_UpdateHelpDeskIssues

(
@IssueID int,
@EmpID int,
@Date datetime,
@StatusID int
)

AS
UPDATE HelpDeskIssuesTbl
SET EmployeeID = @EmpID, IssueDate = @Date, IssueStatusID = @StatusID
WHERE (IssueID = @IssueID)
RETURN

Like I said the Stored Procedure does work when I run it directly in Visual Studio. I have double checked all the params and they all match up unless I am missing something.

Please send help! Thanks.

SCD Not Updating

Jul 17, 2007

Hi gurus,

My feeling with the SCD component is not that very solid. I have the feeling that the behavior of the insert/update strategy is not always correct an working.
I will describe two problems that i encounter.

1. My destination table contains records with the value ''. Cause i don't want '' ( 2 single quotes) in our DWH i update the view that is the source with a case statement that changes the '' to NULL. But when i run the packages the '' values are not update with the NULL values. When i delete the destination table and run the package, the records are inserted with the NULL value as expected. Anyone who has experienced this problem?

2. When i create a new table and run the package so the destination table gets filled with records the SCD will insert alle records (for example 100). When i start the run directly after the first run, all records are updated instead of doing nothing what it should do cause all records exists.

Anyone who can give me some feedback?

with regards, Arthur

When he selects the view from the drop-down list of available tables then SSIS seems to hang without any data being returned (he waited for about 15 mins).

He then changed the OLE DB Source component to use a SQL statement and the SQL statement was: SELECT * FROM <viewname>

In this instance all the data was returned in approx 60 seconds (as expected).

This makes no sense. One would think that selecting a view from the drop-down and doing a SELECT *... from that view would be exactly the same. Evidently that isn't the case.

Can anyone explain why?

Thanks

-Jamie

Sql Datasource Not Updating

Mar 6, 2007

I have this web store that I have been creating.  When a customer goes to check out, he has to log in, then he is redirected to a page where he can view/add/or edit shipping and billing address.  I have based all the sql statements on the profile username, adding records and retrieving them works just fine.  When I go to change something in the info it uses an sql statement that updates based on "Where AccountUserName = @AccountUserName", I have @AccountUserName set to Profile("Username").  Keep in mind this works fine for adding new or bring up current records.  I even put in code in the updated event for the sql data source to post a msgbox telling me how many rows were affected, it says 1 even though I dont see any change in the data.   What am I doing wrong here, it's driving me nuts, its just a very simple update.
