Updating Structure Between Development And Public Database.
Feb 7, 2006
Hi.
I have a question that I have been thinking about for some time. Have in mind that I'm somewhat a SQL newbe.
I work on a few webapplications that are database driven applications. When we desides to change something in the database, we normaly do the changes on our replicat development database, and after some testing the changes are suppose to be implamented in the live, public database.
Now, what is the best way, or recomended way to do this? Today we bo it manualy. But at one time I experimented with the export/import wizard to se if it was possible. What I want to do is change de design of a tabel, without loosing the original data, and without geting the data from the development database into the live database.
To export an stored proccedure, I usualy just create a SQL-script for the procedurs in question and the runthe script against the public DB using the Query Analyser. But if I do the same procedure on a table, I loss all the data in the database.
Do I make any sense at all?
Any tips/idea/best practise on this subject?

Hello friends,
I am new to the SQL Server 2005 development.
From last 1 week or so, i have been facing very strange problem with my sql server 2005s database
which is configured and set on the hosting web server. Right now for managing my sql server 2005 database,
i am using an web based Control Panel developed by my hosting company.
Problem i am facing is that, whenever i try to modify (i.e. add new columns) tables in the database,
it gives me error saying that,
"There is already an object named 'PK_xxx_Temp' in the database. Could not create constraint. See previous errors.
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider".
where xxx is the table name.
I have done quite a bit research on the problem and have also searched on the net for solution but still
the problem persist.
Thanks in advance. Any help will be appreciated.

I a DB deployed in the field at numerous customer sites. I have made changes
to the DB in my dev environment and now I need a way to update the DBs out in
the field to the new DB structure. Examples of updates are adding a new column
to a table, or adding some more code to a stored proc.
So what do I do ? I need to be able to email comething to the customer that
they can run that will make my recent updates to their DB structure. It can't
screw up their existing data either.
So what's the solution ? A big SQL script wil ALTER TABLE commands ?
How do I updated stored procs through a script ? I need help seriously.
What is the accepted industry standard method of updating deployed DBs
when a new version is released ? Please Please help.
Thanks in advance

I have a SSIS package that simply moves data from a SQL database A to another SQL database B. I have update (increased) the size of a nvarchar column, on both A and B.I am wondering if there is a way to "refresh" somehow the SSIS package so I don't have to rebuild and redeploy it.The error I get now is a truncation error: "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page".

I have a db that I use as the backend to an Access application. The application looks at 2 databases that are on the clinet machine. A db from a vendor and my new database. I can read the vendor db (with the proper dns), but I can only read my db when the user has admin privileges. I have granted the public all permissions for the table on my db. What am I missing?
Also, this is a db on a Small business Server 2003 so all of the SQL tools do not appear to be there.
TIA

Hi,I am trying to create a development database server (make use of an old machine), with which to learn about sql 2005 and oracle etc. I'm using VS 2005 Beta 2 on my development/workstation machine. My workstation and the prospective server are connected via a router and can 'see' each other.I have installed win 2003 server on two seperate partitions (multiple boot) and installed sql server 2005 on one partition and will install oracle 10g on the other. (I understand these two databases can run on the same machine/OS, but I just wanted to keep things tidy and I won't be using them at the same time, so ...).My question is how do I/should I configure win 2003 server / sql server 2005 on my server machine, in order to be able to connect from my workstation via vs 2005 beta 2 ?Any suggestions or resources on configuration appreciated.

Hello everyone,I have a webcontrol that uses database-structures alot, it uses the system tables in SQL to read column information from tables. To ease the load of the SQL server I have a property that stores this information in a cache and everything works fine.I am doing some research to find if there are anyway to get information from the SQL server that the structure from a table has changed.I want to know if a column or table has changed any values, like datatype, name, properties, etc.Any suggestions out there ?!

I am running both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005.
Lets say I have a live database that is version 1 for an application. The database is copied onto a development machine to develop version 2 of the application. I want to be able to take a snapshot of the database and then get a program to write all the changes made after the snapshot into sql code. This is so I can run this sql code on the live database and transform version 1 to version 2.
Is there any program/tool that will allow me to do this?

Thanks,

Hi,
I'm neck-deep in trying to normalize all the info I need into separate tables, but I seem to have hit a wall running.
I was curious as to what the "best" way is to develop a database of concert events would be? What I think I've figured so far would be if I created a table called events...that would be 1 row of data per concert event. Each row could then have a 'event_id' as PK, 'date', and a column with the associated 'band_id' from the bands table. Then anytime the date was accessed (assuming a populated row for that date), a list of concerts for that date would show.
I would also like to use the 'event_id' as an access point for my reviews table...where, quite obviously, I would like to be able to have reviews associated with each event from the calendar as well. Does all this seem right? Or is there a better way (i.e. more efficient, smaller database, and/or use less memory)? How, for example (in short, obviously), does a website like Pollstar.com database their events?
I guess my question with regards to this database is also...within my bands table, should I include their tour dates? Or should I put the band_id in my events table?
I was hoping to get a just a little bit of direction so I don't turn some baby missteps into a long-term project down the wrong road. Any help or response is greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

I have been looking for some documentation that would support or rejectmy opinion on Production -vs- Development naming conventions. Ibelieve that each environment should be housed on separate servers withidentical names, access, users, stored procs....... If you eitheragree or disagree with this methodology, I would appreciate your input.TIA,Bill

Hello,
I am trying to refresh a test database with data from a production database. Both database structures are identical, e.g. constraints, stored procs, PK, etc. I am trying to create a package in SSIS that accomplishes this task and I am having extensive problems. The import export wizard is out of the question because the constaints are not carried over, plus when I try to refresh the data using the import export wizard, it fails on 1 specific table because of a column in that table named "Error code". I think "Error code" is a micrsoft keyword, so it fails on this column. Does anyone know a workaround that I can do to accomplish this simple task, that could be completed in minutes using DTS. I understand that SSIS is not as straight forward as DTS, but this task is something that DBA's do on a regular basis and therefore should not be this difficult.
Any help would be appreciated,
David

Hi,
I work with a large team developing ASP.NET application that has a large database with over 50 complex stored procedures. It is proving more and more difficult and time consuming to centralise the development and update of the database changes and I was wondering if there were any best practises/tools that could be recommended. I have looked on the web for good articles and haven't found anything difinitive (except that Team Foundation Server is the way forward)..
A brief background to the current process is that everyone develops on the same database, and then updates the stored procedure scripts in source safe (manually). Then when we do a new release someone builds a script of all the database updates and runs it. There are issues related to developers updating there stored procedures over other peoples and other concurrency.
I am looking to move all the developers to start using local databases so that there work only effects them, but then this brings up problems of keeping all the local databases up to date whenever they get the latest source code. The only way I currently see is to build a database update program, that will run and update to the latest version.
Surely this must be a common issue? Anyone have any good ideas/concepts?
Also our setup is Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and Source Safe 2005.
Cheers,
Andrew Thomas

We are using SQL Server 2012 for both production and development server. Currently, i have plan to transfer the full backup of SQL server database to the development server and then restore it on the development server for testing purpose, so we don't want to disturb on the production.
I have successfully backup the database from the production server and transfer to the development server. however, i encounter some difficulties when trying to do restore. my question is:
1. do i need to firstly create an empty database on the development server and then restore it into this empty database? say i create database call "Test2", then i perform a restore into this database.
2. currently, there is already an existing database being restored previously in the development server and this database is actually the older version of the backup that being restored by the previous engineer. should i remove this database first and restore a new one or both of the database can coexist as long as we put different name for the database?

Hi all! I know I might sound stupid, but I have this problem. I have developed my database on my laptop which does not use Active directory. Lets say I access the database with: SPIDERMANDB1 on SQL server, where the name of my laptop is SPIDERMAN, and the database is DB1. Now, I create an SQL script from sql server and make the necessary changes, like changing the computer name to say, SUPERMAN where my deployment server's name is SUPERMAN. But when I run the SQL script on the SUPERMAN server, it gives me an error like: "User or role SUPERMANDB1 does not exist in this database". I have deployed databases in this way on servers without Acive directory, so I'm sure its not a mistake on my side. So how am I supposed to go around this active directory thingi! Please help me out! I'm counting on u guys!

Hello I am a final year student and for my final year project I have decided to try and create a price comparison website due to the fact that i feel it would be a good project to work on and develop my technical skills in C# and microsoft sql server 2005, since these are mainly the two programs I would say i have more experience with. Basically I want to create a website such as www.pricerunner.com. At this point in time i have started playing around with how i feel the database will look, in terms of tables and columns, below is what i have produced;
Company
Company_ID
Company_name
ADDRESS
Website link
contact
Products
Product_ID
Product_name
Product_Category
Product_Price
I am now stuck as how i will link each company with a product bearing in mind a company will stock different categories of products, also do you think i need any more columns in any of the above tables, as well as am i missing out on anything, I am hoping someone with more knowlegde than myself can shed some knowledge on my problem, thank you.

I'm sure there is a simple way to do this but I cannot think of it.I have an ASP.NET application that I am publishing to a webhost. I have chosen to use FTP to copy my files (aspx, etc.). They work as far as links etc. Now, the next step is to create my SQL database on their server as they instruct, which I have done in name only. (Oh, if it makes a difference, I access the hosting service using Plesk control panel.) Is there any simple way to get my database structure from my PC to the host server? All responses welcome. Thanks.

I am very new to SQL server, and am completely stumped here. I need to transfer the data from an old database to a new one (both SQL Server 6.5 DBs.) The only problem is that the database has been restructured, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the data imported. I am working on manually making all of the structure changes, but there must be a better way. Any ideas? Thank you SO much!

This is a sort of database structure question that could I guess apply to any type of database...
Say I have 4 production lines and I want to log serial numbers on the start of every line and off the end of every line.
Is there any advantage in having a separate table for each Production Line and serial number logging point? (i.e. t_Line1Start, t_Line1End, t_Line2Start etc) or is it just the same as having one big table and having a LineNumber field and a StartEnd field?
Is SQL Server just as happy dealing with fewer transactions to several tables as it is to many transactions to one table?

I want to share with a relative a copy of my application (web based) he has his own SQL 2000 server but I do not want to give my data just the database so the application will run and he can start inputting his own data.
How can I do this like a backup which has everything but with no data.
I tried scripting it using the EM but it did not give me everything just the system db's

I'm designing a web application that acts as business management software for many small autobody shops. This method was chosen because it creates a central point of administration for the software and I believe that a properly configured cluster of services will meet performance requirements. Using SQL Server 2k5 as my backend, I need to structure my DB(s) so that performance and size are kept to a minimum.
That being said, the first problem I encounter is in creating a structure that supports multiple businesses, each with their own unique dataset.
For example, each business will have work orders specific to their business. This necessitates a uniqueness constrained by businessID (hereafter titled "BizID") and WorkOrderID (WoID). The first solution I happened on was the simplest: A composite primary key composed of BizID (int) and WoID (int). The unfortunate consequence of this, as I soon realized, was that *every* table containing multiple business' data would need this composite key structure. The second problem with this method is that there is no such thing (to my knowledge) as a composite identity. I could identify WoID as the identity column, but it would not iterate WoID for BizID x properly if any other Biz added a work order to the table. (i.e. biz 1 adds three work orders (identitied 1, 2, 3), biz 2 adds one work order (would identity as 4) and Biz 1 adds another (would identity as 5), leaving us with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 across two businesses, rather than 1, 2, 3, 4 for biz 1 and 1 for Biz 2)
The second idea I considered was one DB per business. I didn't consider that for very long, since I assumed size considerations would be blown out of the water if I had 50 business and 50 DBs. I could be wrong, as I am decidedly a novice at this. It does benefit from not putting all my eggs in one basket though and makes backup/recovery/troubleshooting much simpler.
The third idea I considered was one table per business. This suffers from the same issues as #2 above with not as many of the benefits.
Both ideas 2 and 3 would need a master table relating logins to the DBs they belong to, which would not be hard to implement at all, but the implications of using this method are unknown to me.
So quite obviously, I'm a novice at this. Perhaps I took a project on that was too big for my britches, but just getting out of college puts me in a good place to take a risk and I will learn a great deal from putting a complex (is it so?) system like this into action.
I appreciate any and all responses, thanks in advance for your replies!
-Devin
