Updating The Image Field In SQL Server Via DataSet

Aug 22, 2006

Hello,

I am trying to update the Image type field named as BlobData in sqlServer 2000. I capture the record in a data set to have the schema and try to update the BlobData field of type Image by assigning it a value of buffer as below. but my assignment seems to be wrong and generates an error saying Object reference not set.

Code
=========================

Dim
fileBuffer(contentLength)
As
Byte

Dim
attachmentFile
As HttpPostedFile =
Me.fileUpload_fu.PostedFile

attachmentFile.InputStream.Read(fileBuffer, 0, contentLength)

Dim
cn
As SqlClient.SqlConnection

Try

      Dim
sSQL
As
String

Dim cmd
As SqlClient.SqlCommand

Dim da
As SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter

Dim ds
As System.Data.DataSet =
New DataSet

      cn =
New SqlClient.SqlConnection(myconnectionString)

cn.Open()

sSQL = "SELECT * FROM Attachment WHERE ID = " & attachmentRecordID

cmd =
New SqlClient.SqlCommand(sSQL, cn)

da =
New SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter(cmd)

da.Fill(ds)

If
(ds.Tables(0).Rows.Count = 1)
Then

      ' ======================================

' ERROR GENERATED HERE

' ======================================

ds.Tables("Attachment").Rows(0).Item("BlobData") = fileBuffer

' ======================================

da.Update(ds, "Attachment")

Return

True

Else

Return

False

End

If

Catch
ex
As Exception

Me
.error_lbl.Text = ex.Message

Return
False

Finally

cn.Close()

End

Try

Can anyone please help this one out.

Cheers.

Store A Dataset In An Image Field Using SQL

May 15, 2002

Hi,

does anyone know a way, using native SQL, to store a result of a query in an image field of a certain table.

The case is we have a selfmade replication to communicate with several SQL servers in stores, this replication is over a telephone line. So we collect all the data using SQL statements and store them in a separate table as an image field. This is done know through a Delphi application that streams the resultset to a image field.

Thanks in advance,

Released_DT = a date  - 09/03/2015 or 09/02/2015
Date2 = returns another date value in this case 09/03/2015

What I'm trying to do is: count distinct number of people (Fields!Name.Value) if the Relased_DT = Date2.My IIF statement is returning a zero value.

Updating Image In SQL Server 6.5 Using Powerbuilder 4

Jul 5, 1998

How do I update and retrieve data which is of type image into/from SQL Server database in Powerbuilder 4.0.06 scripts? I`ve tried using SELECTBLOB and UPDATEBLOB, but it doesn`t work. I wanted to use WRITETEXT, UPDATETEXT and READTEXT in stored procedure, but SQL Server doesn`t allow datatype image to be passed in as a parameter. I also tried using the WRITETEXT directly in Powerbuilder scripts as follows:
WRITETEXT tablename.colname :ptr :graphics;

where ptr and graphics are local variables in PB scripts. ptr is supposed to be of type varbinary in SQL Server syntax. However, there is no equivalent datatype in PB. graphics is of type BLOB in PB scripts which is equivalent to image in SQL Server syntax.

Please advise. Thank you.

SQL Server 2012 :: Updating A Field Based On Result Set

Feb 21, 2014

I am trying to update records based on the results of a query with a subquery.

The result set being produced shows the record of an item number. This result produces the correct ItemNo which I need to update. The field I am looking to update is an integer named Block.

When I run the update statement all records are updated and not the result set when I run the query by itself.

Below you will find the code I am running:

create table #Items
(
ItemNovarchar (50),
SearchNo varchar (50),
Historical int,
Blocked int

[Code] ....

Below is the code I am using in an attempt to update the block column but it updates all records and not the ones which I need to have the Blocked field set to 1.

Update #items set Blocked = 1
Where Exists
(
SELECT ItemNo=MAX(CASE rn WHEN 1 THEN ItemNo END)
--,SearchNo
--,COUNT(*)

[Code] ...

Why is the update changing each record? How can I change the update to choose the correct records?

Updating The Database From The Dataset

Jul 22, 2007

I am having the oddest problem. I can update the data in the dataset, but when I use the update command, or try to do a update manually it will not save the values back to the database.

public void insrtnewtime()

{

int begintime = 00;

int endtime = 23;

int countr;

int _minz;

do

{

begintime = begintime + 1;

string string_begintime_representation = begintime.ToString("00");

//now I have a valid string representations

int _year = 2007;

int _month = 1;

int _day = 1;

int _hour = int.Parse(string_begintime_representation);

_minz = 00;

//need to account for 60 minutes

do

{

//now I need to get a real nice representation to be shown for the visual display

DateTime temptime = new DateTime(_year, _month, _day, _hour, _minz, 0);

//Now I need to strip out just the time, and send it to my stored proc

string stringnewtime_rep_visual = temptime.ToString("t");

string stringnewtime_rep_visual24 = temptime.ToString("HH:mm");

this.tbl_strt_tmesTableAdapter.insrt_strt_times(stringnewtime_rep_visual24, stringnewtime_rep_visual);

_minz += 5;

}

while (_minz < 60);

countr = begintime;

} while (countr < endtime);

this.tbl_strt_tmesTableAdapter.Fill(this.lesson_plannerDataSet.tbl_strt_tmes);

try

{

tbl_strt_tmesTableAdapter.Update(lesson_plannerDataSet.tbl_strt_tmes);//this should save the values

}

catch (Exception e)

{

MessageBox.Show(e.Message);

}

}

the table adapter update, should send the values to the database, but for some reason, it is not. i can see the existing values from the database, along with my new values that i added in my loop, but those values are not being sent to the database when I invoke the update command on the data adapter.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am making this program for my wife who is a school teacher.

Adding A New Field To A Table With Image Field

Hi,
I have a concern about adding a new field to a table with image field - which is huge.
Will there be a problem with some databases, where they have a hard time locating data correctly after such a large field?
Previously this happened to me, and what was advised to put all the big fields at the end of the table.
Thanks.

Updating/Insert With Dataset Or Queries

Jun 1, 2007

Hi,Ive got a class in my code which contains data from several tables. A user profile has a single record in a user_profile tables, for each of these records there is several records in a another table, which itself has several records in a tags table.So far the save method on the class saves the record to the user profile table, then loops through the next two tables info to insert each record. I want to decrease the number of trips to the database and am wondering if anyone can advise on the best way to do this.I am considering using a dataset to retrieve and store the records, instead of a datareader Im using currently. Then when Im done altering the data in the dataset (all three tables) I can commit all the changes in one database transaction?? I have been avoiding datasets due to the fact datareaders are apparently faster.My other option is to try make three calls to the database, one per table, updating my stored procedures to accept arrays of data using XML?? Can anyone tell me what is the best option for me?Thanks,C

what i want is to inset the values for eg. in col4 of my dataset table into col5 of my access table, for that i want to manually use "inset into" statement to update the db table, but i am having problem with the syntax for using dataset..can anyone help please

XML DataSource, Text Dataset And Image From Database Using Visual Studio 2K5 And SSRS 2K5

Feb 19, 2008

"Short" Story Version:

I have a VS 2005 Web Appplication solution that uses SQL Server Reporting Services 2005. One of the projects is a Report Server Project. In this project I have an RDL file that has:
1.)a non-shared XML DataSource (no credentials),
2.)a DataSet with a Command Type of Text and a Query String that is as follows:
<Query>
<XmlData>
<Root>
<LOAD LOAD_ID_PREFIX="" LOAD_ID="" TRUCK="" DIAGRAM=""/>
</Root>
</XmlData>
</Query>

3.)a field that comes from the Database that is of VarBinary(Max) that is a JPEG Image

What happens is, is that by doing #2 above, at design time I can create tables and hook into my datasets and get the report all designed out the way I want. Then at runtime, I have a Stored Procedure that uses the "FOR XML AUTO" option so that I can represent my results from the database in an XML fashion which will allow me to replace the XML Schema in between the Root tags above (in #2) with my actual data (which still has the same schema). I then save the modified RDL to a database table field and move on to happily ever after......in this case, not. In this case, since an VarBinary is involved, unless I want to get a pointer back for the Diagram Column, I have to use the "FOR XML AUTO, BINARY BASE64" option. This returns an Encoded string to represent the Binary value that was in the Database....and this is the partial source of my angst....read on.

My approach that I described above worked flawlessly in all cases where an image wasn't involved. This report is the only report in the whole system I am working on that will have an image and it is the last one being done, so that's why I didn't run into this earlier.

I have tried all kinds of things at different levels, but the thing that I have tried that seemed to me to have the most potential was to use Embedded Code to take the Encoded ASCII Value and convert into something binary that the SSRS Reporting Engine likes (so my image will show), but I have been unsuccessful thus far. The error message I keep getting now from my Embedded Function is: "Invalid length for a Base-64 char array", which I have not been able to resolve thus far....and I do know that the Binary value in the database is good becuase I can see it in pages in my application otherwise.

This aside, is there anyone out there that knows how to take the value of a VarBinary(Max) field and insert it into the Text (XML) DataSet in the markup of an RDL file....and have it appear correctly when the report is rendered in something like the standard Report Viewer Control (or even when being previewed at design time inside of Visual Studio for that matter)?

Just to be clear, the root of my problem, as I see and understand it, is that I have a VarBinary value in a database that is being converted to a string (ASCII...I am presuming) due to how I am writing my stored procedure and then needs to go back to something else binary that the SSRS Engine will accept so that I can see my Image in the report when I render it.

I am wishful that someone out there understands my problem and has run into this and has a solution......but I am wishful of winning the lottery, too, and that hasn't happened yet...............

Thanks.

Problem With Update When Updating All Rows Of A Table Through Dataset And Saving Back To Database

Feb 24, 2006

Hi,
I have an application where I'm filling a dataset with values from a table. This table has no primary key. Then I iterate through each row of the dataset and I compute the value of one of the columns and then update that value in the dataset row. The problem I'm having is that when the database gets updated by the SqlDataAdapter.Update() method, the same value shows up under that column for all rows. I think my Update Command is not correct since I'm not specifying a where clause and hence it is using just the value lastly computed in the dataset to update the entire database. But I do not know how to specify  a where clause for an update statement when I'm actually updating every row in the dataset. Basically I do not have an update parameter since all rows are meant to be updated. Any suggestions?
SqlCommand snUpdate = conn.CreateCommand();
snUpdate.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
snUpdate.CommandText = "Update TestTable set shipdate = @shipdate";
snUpdate.Parameters.Add("@shipdate", SqlDbType.Char, 10, "shipdate");
string jdate ="";
for (int i = 0; i < ds.Tables[0].Rows.Count - 1; i++)
{
jdate = ds.Tables[0].Rows[i]["shipdate"].ToString();
ds.Tables[0].Rows[i]["shipdate"] = convertToNormalDate(jdate);
}
da.Update(ds, "Table1");
conn.Close();

Sending Uploaded Image To Data Access Class When Storing Image In SQL Server 2005

Apr 20, 2007

I am using the 3-tiered architecture design (presentation, business laws, and data acess layers). I am stuck on how to send the image the user selects in the upload file control to the BLL and then to the DAL because the DAL does all the inserts into the database. I would like to be able to check the file type in the BLL to make sure the file being uploaded is indeed a picture. Is there a way I can send the location of the file to the BLL, check the filetype, then upload the file and have the DAL insert the image into the database? I have seen examples where people use streams to upload the file directly from their presentation layer, but I would like to keep everything seperated in the three classes if possible. I also wasn't sure what variable type the image would be in the function in the BLL that receive the image from the PL. If there are any examples or tips anyone can give me that would be appreciated.

Store Documents In Image Field

Jul 20, 2005

I am creating a document management systems using asp. I have beenresearching the different ways of handling the documents such as using thefile system and storing the path in the db, and actually storing thedocument in the db. I like the idea of storing it in the database muchbetter because I can allow users to manage documents themselves (I alreadyhave the code in place to do it if I decide), having a central system withthe ability to add my own document properties by adding fields to the table,security, and backups. I have found that most think it is better to storethe path due to performance issues and the rate the db can grow. I havelooked at our current system in access and we have a total of 4400 documents(of which probably 25% are in the database but don't actually exist anymorein the file system, one hangup about the file system) since 1988. Thiscomes to about 300 documents added each year. The other thing is the issuewith the size of the db. I don't see a whole lot of difference with thisissue because it is going to take up space in your file system too, althoughthe file system may be more efficient at storing them. I would say that 95%of our docs are under 1 mb in size and done in ms word.The last thing is using full-text search capabilities in SQL Server. I needto be able to search the contents of the field.Is there other issues around storing documents in the db to consider besidesthe above?
