Do I have to upgrade to 7.0 before installing the beta SQL 2000 or can I go straight from 6.5?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI plan to upgrade from SQL Server Express Beta 2 to RTM. Since this requires and uninstall and re-install process (not just upgrade), what are the steps I need to take to backup my database in Express Beta 2 and then import it into the new RTM version? I have scripts to recreate the tables and stored procedures, but how do I get the data migrated?Thanks in advance. Cheers, Kris.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHi All,
I am doing an upgrade of SQL Server from Beta 3 release to the release version. I will appreciate if I get some information , some tips that I should follow which will make my task simpler. The database is very critical and big. It has huge amounts of stored procedures.
If you can tell me any site which gives information regarding this that will be also helpful..
Thanks

Hi,
reading BOL of 2005 and have few questions about dts and SSIS
question #1
if I don't want to upgrade my DTS to SSIS ,no way I can save it in
msdb of 2005 ,so I have to do following
1. DTS package have to be saved as a COM-structured storage file
2. execute dts as dtsrun /Ffilename /Npackage_name /Mpackage_password
Am I right or missing some options ?
question #2
If I want to modify package in 2005 I have to do following
1. Export package to file from msdb
2. Use Studio to modify and test it
3. Drop package from msdb
4. Import package to msdb from file
Thanks

Hi guys,
I have done an in-place upgrade of a SQL2000 server to SQL2005 Ent. The upgrade was very smooth for the most part but when I check the versions of my databases they still say 8.0 and not 9.0. I'm able to change them to be 9.0 but I'm wondering why they were not changed automatically during the upgrade process? Any ides or is this something I have to be aware of for future upgrades?
Thanks for your time.
After upgrading to MSSQL 2005 we have stored procedures which get this error
Msg 2715, Level 16, State 7, Procedure prc_sel_accruals, Line 37
Column, parameter, or variable #15: Cannot find data type umoney.
The user data type is defined in the database. I tried recompiling the SP, which suucceeds but then fails on execution.
The SP works under SQL2000. Is there anything we need to do after the conversion?
Hi,
I'm running a VB6 app with MDAC 2.8 on Windows Server 2003 SP1.
I create an ADO recordset with a SELECT statement which returns an empty recordset.
I then add 2 new records to it with AddNew and later perform an UpdateBatch.
Before the SQL upgrade it worked fine but now errors with:
'Cannot convert a char value to money. The char value has incorrect syntax.'
I did a SQL Trace to find out what the Updatebatch was actualling sending to SQL (listed below).
This works fine when I run it on Query Analyser using SQL 2000 but fails on SQL 2005.
I worked out the problem is linked to the columns NewValue and OldValue both are varchar 70.
The first insert has them defined varchar(7) and varchar(1). This insert succeeds, but the second insert has the columns defined as varchar(18) and varchar(12). This one fails (unless they only contains numbers!).
I'm confused.
I've read that sp_executesql has changed for SQL2005.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
Howard

My SQL2000 databases did not upgrade to SQL2005. When I look at the Properties>>Options>>Compatibility Level the only options I have is version 7 and version 8... version 9 - which is SQL2005, is not there.
So what did I do? During the upgrade process - the installation wizard - I made a couple of choices that I believe might have lead to my current condition. The first thing is that I chose to select a installed instance. The second choice I made was to use a domain user account for the Authentication. The second selection I believe had nothing to do with the condition, but I did notice that my Systems Admin user account for SQL is no longer availble... which is a problem because now when I log into the SQL Management Console... it's using the domain name to authenticate rather than using the SA name like it was in SQL2000.
So here is what I think the solution is... I need to create a new Server Registration and create the databases in the new instance and then restore the data from SQL2000 to SQL2005 new instance, and then I can change the Compatibility Level to version 9.
The only issue I still don't have an answer for is the authentication into SQL. I want to not use the domain user account... how can I change this or can I? This also creates an issue when creating the ODBC connection as it wants to use the domain user account to verify.
So if someone can let me know if this is the right direction? Also any suggestions... i would greatly appreciate it!
John

We are getting a failure when upgrading to SP1 for SQL2005. We're running Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1. We're running 4 SQL 2005 instances and 6 SQL 2000 instances on this machine. One of the four 2005 instances did upgrade successfully - don't know how or why.
Looking at other postings, it seems that the 10 lines or so preceding "value 3" in the upgrade log file (under C:WINDOWSHotfixSQL9Logs) are helpful in diagnosing the problem.
Here are the lines preceding the value 3:

Hi,
I'm using VS2005, .NET Framework Version 2.0.50727 on Windows Vista Business.
I wish to implement a database in my mobile device which is using Windows CE 5.0, .NET Compact Framework 3.5 Beta, which version of SQL server should I install into the device?
I've tried using SQL mobile 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition but it won't work. I'm having a Can't find PInvoke DLL 'sqlceme30.dll' error when I try to run the following block of code:
Code Block
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
SqlCeConnection sqlCeConnection = null;
MessageBox.Show("Entering try block");
try
{
if (!File.Exists(@"My DocumentsTest.sdf"))
{
SqlCeEngine sqlCeEngine = new SqlCeEngine(@"Data Source = My DocumentsTest.sdf");
sqlCeEngine.CreateDatabase();
MessageBox.Show("Create successful");
}
sqlCeConnection = new SqlCeConnection(@"Data Source = My DocumentsTest.sdf");
sqlCeConnection.Open();
MessageBox.Show("Open successful");
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
MessageBox.Show(ex.Message);
}
finally
{
if (sqlCeConnection != null)
sqlCeConnection.Close();
}
}
Can anyone please tell me how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance

We replicate a SQL2000 database (DataBaseA) to a SQL2000 database (DataBaseB) by using the Restore function and hasn't change its logical name but only the physical data path and file name. It is running fine for a year. We use the same way to migrate the DataBaseB to a new SQL2005 server with the Restore function and the daily operation is running perfect. However, when we do the Backup of DatabaseB in the SQL2005, it just prompt the error message
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of full-text catalog 'DataBaseA' is not permitted because it is not online. Check errorlog file for the reason that full-text catalog became offline and bring it online. Or BACKUP can be performed by using the FILEGROUP or FILE clauses to restrict the selection to include only online data. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Please note we left the DataBaseA in the old SQL2000 server.
Please help on how we can delete the Full-text catalog from DatabaseB so we can do a backup
Many Thanks
I have a medical records system, SoapWare v4.90, that uses MSDE (SQL2000) databases. Due to the 2gb limitation, I am trying to migrate over to SQL 2005 (Standard or Express) which I have heard works fine. The SoapWare has a datamanager that allows me to log in to the MSDE instance, detach the SoapWare databases from msde (as well as do backups, etc) which I can confirm are detached.
Then I log back into a SQL2005 database instance using the datamanager and try to attach the database. This is what their pictured instructions demonstrate. However, I get the following error:
Database 'sw_charts' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.
Of course, some of the entries will be read only, since doctors have to sign off the charts and are not allowed to subsequently change them. But I should still be able to switch over to sql 2005?!?!?!?
Or... is there a way to attach the databases to SQLExpress manually?
Help pls?

Does 2005 have some kind of new feature that audits/monitors changes to a database kind of like an antivirus or something.
Reason for question:
1) inserting records into database, 1000 records takes about 2 minutes.
2) reading those 1000 records takes about 45 seconds
3) updating those 1000 records takes about 15 minutes
4) yes we are using ntwdblib.dll and a 4gl language
i was running a test program to add, read, update, delete 1000 records and that is when i noticed that insert, update, delete took a performance hit whereas reading didnt. i ran my test program on a control server (in house) and then at the clients side(matching OS, MSSQL 2005 SP2). Results from test program: The UPDATE process on client side took about 4x longer, INSERT about 2x longer, DELETE about 1.5x longer, READ was actually faster on the clients system.
so this made me wonder if their was some kind of database monitoring/auditing going on.

I'm querying a small SQL2005 database and finding that the query can sometimes complete in under a second and then 5 minutes later the same query can take 15 minutes to complete.
The query I'm running is very simple as follows:
select TOP 26 * from vSearchListOpportunityItem WHERE OpIt_OpportunityId=2495 ORDER BY Prod_Name, OpIt_OpportunityItemId
The view it is pulling data from only contains only 1890 lines, which in turn pulls data from 3 tables with 821, 2560, and 1957 lines of data. In other words it's small. I have noticed that if I try and open the smallest of these tables while on a 'go slow' period it also takes around 15 minutes to return the data.
The database was originally on SQL 2000. It is the only database on this powerful quad core server.
The SQL Server CPU usage never goes above 40%, and always has free memory.
No sign of locks.
I can't figure out why such a small database is going so slow with such a simple query. Any ideas?
I am planning to move the sql server 2000 database to the sql server 2005 database. I have to restore that by using the back up copy. Do I need to follow any special instructions or just like moving from one server to another. Could some body help with this. Thanks!

Got a 2005 SP1 SQL box, with database mailer giving problems. In the sysmail_event_log is has
1) Exception Information =================== Exception Type: System.NullReferenceException Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Data: System.Collections.ListDictionaryInternal TargetSite: Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlIMail.Server.Objects.Account GetAccount(Int32) HelpLink: NULL Source: DatabaseMailEngine StackTrace Information =================== at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlIMail.Server.DataAccess.DataAccessAdapter.GetAccount(Int32 accountID) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlIMail.Server.DataAccess.SessionManager.GetAccount(Int32 accountID) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlIMail.Server.Controller.CommandFactory.CreateSendMailCommand(DBSession dbSession) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlIMail.Server.Controller.CommandFactory.CreateCommand(DBSession dbSession) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlIMail.Server.Controller.CommandRunner.Run(DBSession db) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlIMail.IMailProcess.ThreadCallBack.MailOperation(Object o)
Error: 14667, Severity: 16, State: 1. (Params:). The error is printed in terse mode because there was error during formatting. Tracing, ETW, notifications etc are skipped.
whenever it is trying to send an email. The only way to get this to start sending mail is to run the databasemail90.exe file, so the profiles security etc seem ok. It's just that after the SQL box gets restarted
that it gives all these problems and then it needs some tinkering before it starts to work again.
So anybody got any ideas or tops on what can be done to help sort this out?
Thanks!
