Upgrade From Beta-3 To The Release Version
Feb 16, 1999
Hi All,
I am doing an upgrade of SQL Server from Beta 3 release to the release version. I will appreciate if I get some information , some tips that I should follow which will make my task simpler. The database is very critical and big. It has huge amounts of stored procedures.
If you can tell me any site which gives information regarding this that will be also helpful..
Thanks
Ajay

I downloaded SQL Server 2008 Release Candidate (Express) Beta on 6/16/08. Installation started but failed. A message stated Microsoft NET Framework 2.0 SP2 needs to be installed first.
I downloaded SP2 and installed it. However, when I try again to install the SQL 2008 Release Candidate Beta I get the same message that SP2 must first be installed.
Can someone tell me how to make the SQL Beta version installer recognize the previously installed SP2 Service Pack?
Thanks, Norman

I downloaded the 101 Samples installation (i.e. 101SamplesCS.msi) from Microsoft's website, which contains SQL Server database files.
While working with the databases in the "Data Access" samples from the 101 Samples projects, I get the following error:
"Database <mdf_name> cannot be upgraded because its non-release version (600) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this version of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database..."
I assume the database files were created with a beta or CTP version of SQL Server 2005. Does anyone know where I can get an updated version of these database files or scripts to update them?
Please help.
Mike.

Can some one here give me more insight about how to upgrade a SQL Server 2005 Standard Version (32 bits) to a SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Version (32 bits) as default instance on a Windows 2003 enterprise OS (32 bits). I want to know what is the easist way and what is the safest way. May I preserve some settings I have for the STD version, or I have to start from strach again to configure the server? Is there any catches, anything I should have attention to (We are using heavily about CLR and fulltext indexing)?
Thanks a milliom

I upgraded to SQL Server 2005 SP2 release today. I had been working with 9.00.1399. I had developed few packages in the older version which were getting invoked through the asp web application locally and it was working fine.
Today I upgraded to SQL server 2005 3042 version.
Now the same packages are not working when invoked through the web application. But it works fine stand alone. All errors refer to connection problem.
I need to resolve this urgently. Can anyone help me please?

I plan to upgrade from SQL Server Express Beta 2 to RTM. Since this requires and uninstall and re-install process (not just upgrade), what are the steps I need to take to backup my database in Express Beta 2 and then import it into the new RTM version? I have scripts to recreate the tables and stored procedures, but how do I get the data migrated? Thanks in advance. Cheers, Kris.

Hi All,
I had installed a beta version of SQL Server (SQL Server 2005 CTP) and now I want to install a full version of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on my machine. I have properly uninstalled all the CTP componenets from Add-Remove programs and even deleted the registry data of that installation. I have also removed the related folders from the hard drive.
When I run the setup of the full version it says that setup has detected the beta versions of either .Net Framework, Visual Studio or SQl Server. Remove the beta components using Add-Remove programs and try again. Can anyone help me out of this problem?
Regards,
Sachin

Thanks for any help.

Hi all,
Yesterday, I just downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) and tried to install it in my Windows XP Pro PC that is on Microsoft NT 4 LAN System. I got the following error: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP setup The Microfost .NET Framework 2.0 is not installed. Please install before running setup.
This morning, I downloaded the NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) from the Microsoft Download Center and installed it in my Windows XP Pro PC. Then I tried to install the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) again. This time I got a new error: SQL Server 2005 Setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of Visual Studio, .NET Framework, or SQL Server 2005. Use ADD or Remove Programs to remove these components, and then run SQL Server 2005 Setup again.
I am confused and lost in this installation problem. Was the .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) a wrong Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 I downloaded and installed in my PC? Where is the right Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 for the SQL Server 2005 Express? Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

I have a developer who built an application using the SSE 2005 December CTP and I would like to bring the db's into the official SSE 2005 released version. I have attempted the following:
1. Create the db's in the released version, detach and re-attach the CTP db's. I got an error telling me they were incompatible.
2. Installed CTP version on one server, backed up the db's and then attempted to restore the db's on another server running the official released version of SSE 2005. Got an error attempting that too.
3. Installed the Management Studio for SS 2005 Developer edition thinking that I could connect to the two seperate instances of each server and like I could in EM 2000 run the transfer wizard to move the db's and data from one server to the next. Problem with this is that I can't get an object browser connection established. I have TCP/IP all config'd correctly, too.
Any other ideas where I can go with this at this time?
Thanks in advance.
Bill

I have a database which was created in a beta release of SQL Server Express. It was also create when I had the .Net Framework 2.0 Beta installed.
Since then, I have installed .Net Framework 2.0 (Current Release) because that is what was required for MS SQL Server Management Studio Express.
When I try to connect to the DB now it says Cannot connect to server.
I also have the mdf/ldf files. When I try to attach them on another computer running the latest version of SQL Server Express it says:
Database 'Name' connot be upgraded because its non-release version (587) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this vertion of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database....
Any ideas how i can get the mdf/ldf files converted over? Or how I can attach the the ealier version of sql server express?? thanks.

Hi All,
Currently we are using standard edition SQL Server 2005. In couple of days we will upgrade our system to Enterprise ed. How to do the right upgrade without losing any data? Do we have to uninstall the current version before upgrade it? Also, what is the best practice to have, keep using standard edition in my development box while later I will deploy it in enterprise on production server, or using Developer ed in my development box?
Thanks in advance.

I need to create a DB version upgrade schema on client site that will preserve the existing data.
Provide the user with a patch that he can run on his database that wiil apply changes to his DB structure and keep the old data.
One approach that I am thinking of is to create a differential DB patch - a and apply that to the client database.
Is there any strategy any algorithm to do that. Can it be automated?
If there any accomplishments or approaches known on the subject?
I would greatly appreciate any ideas you can come up with.

Hi Guyz
We are currently running with Eval 120day limit SQL6.5 SP4 and now wish to upgrade to the full version. We have now purchased the full version but whenever we try to "upgrade" the server all we get told is that we should "Use control panel to add or remove components" or we are told that we should "use service pack 3 to update". I can only assume that this message is refering to Add/Remove programs in the control panel but there is no reference to SQL here.
Any ideas how we can upgrade to the full legal version without loosing our SMS data?
Very best regards to all
Stuart
