Upgrade From MSSQL7 To 2005. [Import Database To New Server]
Jul 26, 2007
Hi everyone!
I start to get panic now after 10 hours of different ways of trying to
get my old database from my [Server1]* to my [Server2]*. When Im
trying with the "SQL Server Management Studio" that included in
the MSSQL 2005 but that just tells me it dosn't support any version
before MSSQL2000.. I've also tryed with some third part softwares
like EMS but no joy!... Its 5 databases from the old server that I MUST
get into the new one.. Anyone know howto do this?
[Server1]
Windows 2000
MSSQL7
[Server2]
Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2.
Includes MSSQL 2005 Premium edition.
Kind Regards

Hi all,
I hv very little experience handling mssql7. Recently I was assigned a task to maintain a website that uses mssql 7. My system admin has already installed mssql7 server components on a Win2K box and I have only managed to install mssql7 client components on my winXP box.
Whenever I try to connect to the remote server using enterprise manager, I always encounter the same error message complaining that
Quote:
A connection could not be established to "Server Name" - Access denied
ConnectionOpen (CreateFile())..
Please Verify SQL Server is running and check you SQL Server registration properties (by right clicking on the GAMMA
node) and try again.
I have used the client network utility in my winxp box to set up an alias for the server using various network libraries such as TCP/IP and named pipe, but it keeps on returning the same access denial message.
I am running out of brain juice figuring about what's wrong. Could somebody please help me? Thanks in advanced.

I have a database on one server that is running MSDE and I would like to copy it to another server running SQL Server Express.
The process I followed was to create a backup on the first server.
Copy the backup file to the other sever
Then restore using the backed database file on the new server
Is this the right procedure? Everything I see about migrating in on the same server. I do not want to do it on the same server as we are migrating the application to the new server.

Hi All,
I have just migrated couple of test databases
from SQL Server 2000 to 2005 (side by side).
I also migrated the server level logins using SSIS transfer logins task, available on SSIS 'Transfer logins', I selected all the databases that I have migrated so that I have all database users account in server logins (to avoid orphaned users); but I don't have all the database users in server logins, also the sys.sysusers doesn't have the database users, that I have moved to SQL 2005. Can anybody help?
Also do I need to back up the SQL Server 2000 database and restore it on SQL 2005? What impact this operation can have?
Thanks for your time..

There are any import/export utilities for SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition database? Which edition of SQL Server 2005 can do this?
Or we must use publication/subscription to transfer data to the mobile database?

We just upgraded from SQL Server 2000 to 2005. In the past, when I ran the import/export wizard to copy multiple tables from one database to another with SQL Server 2000, I had no problem. Now when I used the import/export wizard to copy multiple tables with SQL Server 2005, I kept getting an error. For example, when copied three tables, the first table might be copied fine and I got an error with the second table and the whole thing stop. Sometimes I could copy two tables. However, when I ran the import/export wizard to copy each table one at a time, it worked.
The error that I got was "Cannot insert duplicate key in object..." I selected the options to "Delete rows in existing destination tables", and "Enable identity insert". What am I doing wrong?

Hi
We are planning to upgrade the SQL Server in our production environment from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. This is a 4 Node cluster environment with 3 Databases on 3 Virtual instances. The main requirement is to achieve this with no/minimal downtime.
Could you please suggest or direct me to any documentation for the best practices used to upgrade such an environment?
Thanks

I am trying to simplify a query given to me by one of my collegues written using the query designer of Access. Looking at the query there seem to be some syntax differences, so to see if this was the case I thought I would import the database to my SQL Server Developer edition.
I tried to start the wizard from within SQL Server Management Studio Express as shown in one of the articles on MSDN which did not work, but the manual method also suggested did work.
Trouble is that it gets most of the way through the import until it spews forth the following error messages:
- Prepare for Execute (Error)

There does not seem to be any method of specifying a number of sessions, so I don't see how to get round the problem.
Does anyone know how I can get the import to work?

Aloha from Hawaii!
I am the IT vendor for a law firm that is using a product by HummingBird called DocsOpen, now called DM OpenText 5.2
We are upgrading the office and the SQL server that currently runs the database for the DM program is an old Compaq box running NT 4, SQL 7. No way to upgrade that native, for sure.
We have a brand new monster Dell running SQL 2005 and we need to move the database from the old server to the new server.
Can this be done? I don't have SQL 2000 as an interim. I have read the detach db document but am afraid the database is not compatible with 2005.
I am trying to develop a way to get this done in the most effective manner possible without losing data.
Can I offer anymore information or specifics? Soliciting a Microsoft SQl Engineer for a paying gig is not a bad option either, can't seem to find one in Hawaii.
If you have any hard info, I would certainly appreciate it.
Mahalo!

Hello All:
I'm new to this forum and new to the upgrade process for SQL2K5. I would like to get this upgrade moving. However, I running into a few problems. Right now I am attempting to use the Copy Database Wizard. SQL2K5 and SQL2K are installed on different servers.
I made a copy of the tables for the database I am converting and this is the one I am trying to copy over.
The process runs fine until it gets to the SQL Server Agent Job. It fails on this step and prompts to check the event log.
Does anyone know what might cause this?
Right now I'm looking for the easiest solution to test the data. Is the copy database wizard the best approach? Can anyone recommend another one? Maybe backup/restore.
I used export from SQL2K to SQL2K5 and that worked, but it brought over the dbo prefixes.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Or at least a shove in the right direction.
Thanks,
Cleech

I have a SQL Server 2005 evaluation that has already been installed and setup on a server. I believe it originally had a 180 day eval. There have been numerous databases and users added as well as maintenance plan created...
The eval was put on the machine as an interim solution while waiting for paper work and order processiing things to happen. All the paperwork and ordering... have been completed and I now have the real SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition license key ....
I am very new to SQL Server and need to determine ...
1. Can I update the eval copy to become permanently licensed?
2. Would I want to upgrade the eval to permanent? Will I lose any capabilities by keeping the current eval setup?
If it is reasonable to keep the eval setup
3. How do I go about entering the license key to make it permanent?
If it is necessary to install the new Standard Edition...
4. How do I install it while maintaining the already defined databases, data, users, maintenance plan...
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

I just upgraded a large SQL 2000 database server to SQL 2005, and I have 2 databases that won't attach to the 2005 Server. They are both very small, about 90MB in size, and when I attach them to 2005, the process alternates between running and spinloop status. It can sit forever, and will never complete. I restored backups before the upgrade to a SQL 2000 Server, and reran DBCC CheckDB on both, and got no consistency errors, Updated Stats and indexes, then detached and moved the data files to 2005, and same thing.

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:
SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.
After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.
I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.

How do I upgrade Sql Server 2005 Express to SP2 if I also have SQL Server 2005 Enterprise SP2 already on the same box? I installed Sql Server 2005 Enterprise first, then applied SP2, then installed Visual Studio 2008 (which installed SQL Server 2005 Express).
When I try to upgrade Sql Server 2005 Express to SP2 using the special Express edition of SP2, I get an error message that says "None of the selected features can be installed". I end up having to cancel the install of SP2.
I'm left with SQL Server 2005 at level 9.0.3054 and SQL Server 2005 Express at 9.0.3042. How can I bring SQL Server Express 2005 to the same level as SQL Server 2005 Entperprise?

Hi
I am trying to upgrade SQL Server 2005 Express to SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition.
(As a Preparation to install SQLServer2005 Service Pack 2 (CTP))
I tried to upgrade a particular Instance (OFFICESERVERS, which was based on SQL Server 2005 Express ).
During the upgrade I get a message saying that ...
.....Your upgrade is blocked because of edition upgrade rules.....
All other components I selected for Installation are propertly installed (Analysis, Reporting)
The setup log contains the following detail information:

I also tried to explicitly upgrade the OFFICESERVERS instance by executing Setup from the command shell:
start /wait setup.exe ADDLOCAL=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=OFFICESERVERS UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SKUU

The result is the same, i.e.... Your upgrade is blocked because of edition upgrade rules...
Does anybody know about this problem?

Hi,
We are planning to upgrage our SS 2000 databases(couple of hundreds) to SS 2005.
To minimise the potential work arounds, it is agreed to have complex databases, continue running on compatibility mode 80. What are the potential impact of having database on mode 80(apart from not being able to use new feature)on SS2005?
Fruther how we can we import SS 2000 DTSs to SS 2005 SSIS in an cluster environment?
Thanks,
Sajish

Hi,
We are performing a SQL 2005 SP1 upgrade from SQL 2000 on our Windows 2003 SP1 Standard Edition.
When we run the upgrade, we got a error "Upgrade Advisor Return -1" as a pop-up window.
When we run the Upgrade Advisor separately, we get this error :

Hi,
We are running a test upgrade form sql 2000 standard edition 32 bit to sql 2005 developer edition 32bit. Followed through all the steps and specified the account(SA priveleges and currently used by the 2000 version) and is the local admin on the box for the services and the setup seemed to move fine, except for when it got to the point of installing database services - This is the error message that I got:
MSSQLServer could not be started. Verify you have sufficient priveleges to start system services. The was no choice but to hit cancel and then the set up progressed with a final message of 'SEtup failed'.
Here is a portion of the error log:
