Upgraded Express To Developer Edition Is Not As Easy As Advertised; Error When Adding A Database To Website

In trying to upgrade my sql express install from express to developer edition, I ended up having to delete all things express from my computer and do a clean install of developer edition (as i installed developer edition initially over sql express but this didnt seem to work; express edition still appeared in add remove programs etc). Anyway so i blew away the install and have a clean install of developer edition. Now when I create a new website in Visual Studio 2005 and try to add a database to the project, it gives me an error stating that i need to have sql server express 2005 installed to function properly... Do i need to have express AND developer edition of sql installed to do this? I would think developer edition of sql would enable me this functionality...

It is also worth noting that I get the dreaded remote connection error when trying to connect to a db that I used to be able to connect to when I was using sql express (the aspnetdb database that is created when you user their membership stuff)

However, I did the following successfully:
1. create a database using the sql management studio
2. added a table and some data to it
3. threw a dataset into the website
4. added a gridview to a page in the website, pulling data from the dataset
5. and the website runs successfully populating the page with data...

in visual studio web developer express edition 2008 i added a new item this was a sql server database which i called test2. hello eveyone..i have just downloaded and installed the visaul web developer 2005 express edition and sqlserver 2005 express edition.On top of that i even downloaded and installed the northwind database.But my problem is when i am connecting to the northwind database by clicking toos menu>connect to the database>choose datasource>new connection>..i have provided it with the required information..but as soon as i press "Test Connection" button the following error box displays.. I have made my website using SQL Server Express edition. It is totally database driven and manypages use databases to display data. My problem is that after paying for webhosting fees my web host told me that they do not support SQL Server express edition. Instead they have support for MySQL and Ms Access. Except that there is this MS 2000 Database service for an additional cost. Any recommendations what I should do except changing the host? If I pay for MS 2000 Database servicem, will my website work? My user management(i.e ASPNETDB database) was created by Visual Web developer and I don't want to do user management myself. Any advice?

I have Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite and have SQL Server Express installed from the initial setup. I would like to replace the Express edition with SQL Server 2005 Developer edition. I am currently developing for SQL 2000 and also have Enterprise Manager installed locally. Will the Developer edition install offer the option to unistall the Express edition (I don't need both installed)? Or do I need to uninstall Express manually and then install Developer. Also is there anything I have to be wary of in terms of making sure I am still able to debug SQL 2000 sprocs etc. in VS?

My version of VS2005 is proffesional. I cannot seem to find SQL 2005 Developer Edition in the Server Explorer of VS2005. So I am wondering if I need to install SQL 2005 Express. Before I had SQL 2000 and MSDE installed with VS2003 and there was no problem.

Does anyone know if it is possible to use SQL Server Developer Edition to produce SSIS packages that will operate on a remote SQL Server Express Edition database?
The situation is such that it is easiest to install a SQL Server Express Edition database on a remote server (for use within a company intranet) due to server availability and licensing restrictions. It would be great to be able to do Excel round trips with the data though - would it be possible to use SQL Server Developer Edition to do this on another computer, and have it update the data in the Express database?

I had to uninstall SQl Server 2005 Developer Edition because of hardware requirements, and reinstall Express Edition download version.
But SQL Server Database Services fails with this message:
SQL Server Setup has determined that the following account properties are not specified: 'AGTACCOUNT' . Error Code: 28006.
The first time I installed Express the flow of setup ended well without any message. How to act?

I have (had!) SQL Server 2005 Express and Visual Studio Web Express
2005 (still do) installed but need to write some Reporting Services
reports. I have now bought a Sql Server 2005 Developer license (£40 version)
and have installed it. However I couldn't find any new installation in
my program files so i uninstalled it and the express
version and tried to reinstall the Developer edition but it
kept stopping with all the options greyed out saying there's nothing
to install. So i managed to install as an instance, can't install the 2nd disc though ?? Am i doing something wrong here ? how can i satrt again ??

I'm trying to register a developer's 2000 pc from my 2005 pc.
i'm not sure this is even something possible from Dev Edition to Dev Edition- I can register a 2000 server just fine.
I can ping him. Both our systems have remote access 'on'. His server is (local), i've tried connecting to it by just entering his machine name and by using just the ip address. The error I get is "timeout expired. The timeout elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."
Am I just not registering this properly? I entered just the ip address in the 'server' box. I am connecting as sa with the pw he gave me. When i connect to my server, I use the ip addressinstance. However, I am not sure what to use for the instance when all I see when I look at his machine is (local).
I haven't needed to do this before.
Suggestions?

Hi, I have installed on my laptop SQL server 2005 Developer edition, I can change ANY of the settings of the SQL server and OS.
I am writing code with a team using continuous integration where the connection string is the following:
"Provider=SQLNCLI;Server=.SQLEXPRESS;Database=Secret;Trusted_Connection=Yes;"
is there a way (create an alias,rename server, other?) to make my local dev SQL server accept the connection string above, as at the moment I have to rename the connection string every time before checking in code and after downloading the latest version from the code repository.
any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated

Strange one. I have copied my working web-site to the production server and get this message.
Tried copying new set of database files and reset the server to ensure no applications could be accessing the database files. Still get the same error.
Works fine on my Visual Studio VWD Express version.

I recently purchased a copy of Visual Studio 2005 Professional last month and it came with SQL Server Developer Edition. However, I noticed it also installs the express edition. If I choose not to install the Developer Edition (Im quite new to SQL) can I deploy a database I develop in the express edition on a regular SQL server?

I have read/studied (i) Working with Databases in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express in http://quickstarts.asp.net/QuickStartv20/aspnet/doc/data/vwd.aspx, (ii) Xcopy Deployment (SQL Server Express) in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165716.aspx, (iii) User Instances for Non-Administrators in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143684.aspx, and (iv) Embedding SQL Server Server Express in Applications in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165660.aspx. I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. Please help and give me some detailed procedures/instructions to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase (or ChemDatabase itself) from the SQL Server Management Studio Express to the App_Data folder of the website of my VWD Express project?

What I want to be able to do is add 1 to 3 more users so they can gain access to the database I have created to run queries and add data. This is the part I am confused about. How do I get additional users added??

Hello, I hope someone knows the answer to this issue. I am trying to install SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition and once I get to the screen that is asking for the SQL Server instance and Login Information I receive the following error when trying to proceed.
(Report Server database is a different version and cannot be used for this installation)
I have installed reporting services 2000 developer edition many times and I have never seen this error.

I have a pentium PC with 599 MHZ speed and 1.5 GB of RAM with Windowsxp SP2. I already have an instance of SQL 2005 running at my box. Let me know if you need any more logs. When I tried to start the sql server it is working fine.

I get the following error installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition

Error message: Unknown error 0x80131501
Error description: You must have administrative credentials to perform this task. Contact your system administrator for assistance.
I am installing on Windows XP with Admin privs.
There is nothing listed in COM+ Services for SQL.
The Distributed Transaction Coordinator service is running.
There is a previous installation of SQL 2000 Developer Edition installed.
I have seen some pretty old posts with the same error.
I was wondering if there was a final resolution, service pack, etc. that solves this problem?

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Hello everybody,
I intend to used SQL Express database in my website so that I don't have to go through all the database deployment effort when deplying my website.
In this regard, can anyone please tell me what features would it require in my hosting package so that my application works fine (in database context). Would I have to purchase any additional features (like the way we purchase SQL Server database(s) in hosting package) for SQL EXpress in order to deploy my application??

Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?
