Upgrading To Replication

Mar 5, 2007

I created an application with the MSDE (SQL server 2000 edition).

The application handles the contents of an automatic wharehouse system, on one side it interfaces to the wharehouse hardware (industrial controllers) and on the other side it interfaces to an As400 system using the IBM ODBC driver. Database and application run on WXP proffesional.

As the wharehouse works round the clock, we would like to add a standby system. We do not need a failover system, it is enougth that the reserve system has everything installed and set up and that the database is up to date so the the wharehouse may be restarted using the reserve system.

So we require live database replication.

In order to experiment I took a copy of the database and put it on the desktop and portable in my lab, which are both running W2KP. I could not get the database published, the wizard round up with an error saying that the computer cannot be set up as a distribution server (error 14114).

I realised that I may need a server edition of windows to do this, is this correct?

What would be my best (cheapest) option to upgrade, given that my requirements are very simple and straightforward **except** for the replication. Note that ideally the replication would include everything, so that if e.g. a user changes password, a view of stored procedure gets modified etc, it will all get replicated.

I seem to remember that SQL server 2000 required the enterprise edition for this level of replication, and had to be run on a windows server edition. As far as I can see the 2005 edition offers a limited replication on the standard edition. Would it be better to upgrade to this?

Would the 2005 server edition be able to do the necessary replication on W2KP/XP?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Replication Environment Configuration Help!!

Oct 24, 2007

I have a production server log shipping to a secondary server every 30 minutes (both SQL 2000), which the second server is used for both a warm standby server and for reporting from users. Issue: the log shipping locks the DB so reporting can't be done until the load is finished, the load to the second set of databases has taken up to 15 minutes to finish allowing the users only 15 minutes to run reports, this is not acceptable. The server also needs to be used for DR.

I am looking for another solution, I can't use Transactional Log shipping as not all of the tables in the databases have a primary key identified. So, I am looking for a real-time or near real-time reporting server that is more available to running reports and a warm standby server for Disaster recovery. I am trying to figure out what SQL Server 2000 has to provide (or even 2005 or 2008?) or I am also looking at some third party software, but not sure what is the best for a reasonable price.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks....JB

Replication Of SQL Server In Clustered Environment

Aug 9, 2006

We are running 2 SQL Server and both run in failover clustered Environment.
The Problem is now we need to Replicate a Database from one Virtual SQL Sever to the other.

The Second one (clusterd environment)is stroing their database localy while the First One (clustered environment)is storing database in a shared storage.
Note that Both Server are used for sperate purpose , but we now need to set replication on the Other Clustered Setup for Reporting Purpose.

Will it work if we configure replication from One SQL Server Clustered Setup to the Other Clstered Setup.
If yes, then please let me know how it can be done ?

How Can I Maintain Timestamp Column In Replication Environment

May 27, 2008

Hi Friends

I have transactional replication,
The publisher DB contains table call Courser with timestamp column, this column values are unique for the publisher DB

The subscriber DB also contains same copy of data in publisher DB Course table, but the timestamp column values are different.

So my problem is how can I keep this two tables (Course) identically, (same timestamp column vales in both table)

NOTE: Publisher and Subscriber DB reside under two different SQL server instance

Thanks and regards

Replication Isues After Upgrading Subscriber To 2005

May 16, 2006

Hi There

A while ago i migrated a 2000 database to a new instance of sql server 2005 and succesffully setup replication from a 2000 publisher.

However to experiment i took an existing 2000 instance with a subscriber databases and upgraded the default instance to 2005. (Upgraded from 2000 Enterprise to 2005 Enterprise)

After the upgrade the setup logs were all successful, i also run upgrade advisor before and made sure there were no issues.

To see what happens i did not drop the subscription before upgrade (is this an absolute neccessity ?)

All i did was stop the distribution agent before upgrade, to see what would happen, i did not expect it to work.

But since the upgrade i cannot delete the subscription on the subscriber after upgrade, i also cannot create a new subscriptions on the upgraded subscriber.

I get the following error:

Sql Server error 207: column job_step_uid not found.

I found the following link :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914781/en-us

but it only refers to desktop editions and express, they refer to the msdb database not upgrading, but the upgrades logs are clear i see no evidence of an issue when upgrading msdb.

What exactly is going on? How can i delete the old subsciption and start creating new ones in the upgraded subscriber ?

I have read the Upgrading replicated DB's topic in BOL, no mention of having to drop subscription before upgrade although i suspect so, all it mentions scripting out the replication , changing the scripts , dropping the subscription (no mention of before or after upgrade), and re-creating them. (all of these i am unable to do due to the above error.)

Please assist, thanx

Truncate Transaction Log On A Pull Transactional Replication Environment

Oct 3, 2007

I created transactional replication on a database and setup pull subscriptions on each subscriber to run at a scheduled time once a day. The scheduled start time on each subscriber can differ. The transaction log on the publishing database will eventually consume all possible disk space. Is it possible (and safe) to shrink or truncate the transaction log file for the publishing database before all the subscribers completed running its daily pull subscription? If not, how can I manage disk space for the transaction log on the publishing database and ensure all transaction are replicated to the subscriber?

Thanks in advance.

Merge Replication: Problems Upgrading SQL-2000 To 2005

Dec 25, 2006

Hello!

We have a module in our business-application, that automatically installs merge replication of the business-application's database, both at publisher and subscribers. It's intended for Sql-2000. Now we need it to be applicable also for Sql-2005, so the module requires some changes, because, as we noticed, sql-2005's replication technology differs from Sql-2000's one.

A few questions to experts, familiar with Merge Replication in SQL-2005:

1. Is it possible to create hybrid replication, with publisher running at SQL-2000 (MSDE) and subscribers running at SQL-2005 Express? Merge publication is not supported in SQL 2005 Express, but some users may require option to use the application at free-of-charge database platform.

2. How deep are changes in merge replication implementation at system level? Is it just modified a bit since SQL-2000, or changed entirely? This knowledge is needed, because the module uses some low-level features (executing system sp's, querying replication-specified tables, etc.). For example, when we tried to create subscription of existing publication in SQL 2005 using the module as is, we found out that sp_addmergepullsubscription_agent doesn't use @encrypted_password parameter anymore, and subscription creation process failed.

3. If anybody has experience using merge replication creation/deletion/detection scripts, generated by SQL 2000, in SQL 2005! Please, tell - what more problems may happen?

Thanks!

SQL 2012 :: Setting Up Transaction Replication In Test Environment From Production

Mar 3, 2015

Setting up Transaction Replication in test environment. I am willing to bet that most of you take a production backup (if so, how, and using what?), restoring the database to your test environment, then running a snapshot to your subscriber and away you go.

But perhaps you take a backup of your publisher and subscriber, if so, how do you know there are no inconsistences because there were transactions sitting on the distributor?

What do you do if you have additional indexes on the subscriber for reporting, that are not on the publisher?

Here at work we are having issues with getting consistent databases set up with T Rep, missing rows, duplicate keys at subscriber etc. How to avoid these issues.

QA Environment?

Jun 12, 2007

Good morning,

I am a DBA and my boss recently recommended that we change our QA environment so that we don't have any databases on it unless they are actively being tested. This would be to save hardware costs.

The only issue I can think of at this point is that promotion to our QA environment would take up to 2 hours for some of our larger databases if we have to restore production databases to qa for every QA run.

Is this a good idea? How do you run your QA (full or partial copy of prod)? Any input appreciated.

Thank you.

SQL EE And SQL SE In The Same Environment

Dec 5, 2007

Hi!

I work on a company where we today have one SQL Server Standard Edition and Reporting Services (SSRS) and Analysis Services (SSAS) installed on the same server.

Now we want to install SQL Server Enterprise Edition, but still have the Standard Edition installed.
We are gonna invest in one more server.

I wonder if its possible to install the database engine for both versions on one server and then install instances of SSRS and SSAS on the other server?

Can Standars Edition have SSRS and SSAS on another server than the Database Engine?
And is it different versions of SSRS and SSAS between SQL SE and SQL EE, or does SSRS and SSAS get the SQL EE benefits if the database engine is SQL EE?

Thanks in advance!

SQL In A Wireless Environment

Mar 12, 2007

Jimmy writes "We use a software that stores its database in SQL. We currently have a server box running Windows 2000 Server with SP4 and SQL Server 2005 with SP2 which holds the database. The server is wired in but we have several other stations that connect to the database wirelessly.

The problem is with our wireless stations.
When a wireless client travels from one access point to a repeater, it'll drop the connection for that moment. Once it picks up the wireless connection again, it requires closing out of the software and going back into it so it reestablishes the SQL connection to the server.

Is there a solution for a seamless reconnection with SQL for our wireless clients? Is this a problem with our software or SQL? Please advise. Thank you."

SQL Developer Environment

Nov 6, 2007

Hi Guys,
Im new to SQL Server 2005.
In our organization, I was tasked to implement and maintain
MS SQL 2005 database.
We have several system developer and they are using MS SQL 2005
as a backend database.

Currenty, they are responsible for designing their own databases required by their application.
My concern is that I want to restrict access to my SQL server that only the DB administrator can access the
database server.

My question is that, how they can design their databases without accessing the database server. Is it
possible for them to access SQL Server with some restriction? I mean, I want to impose some security measures
that they can only access objects within their scope.

Our current scenario is that they have MS SQL Express version installed in their pc and from that terminal
they can design and test their application and after everything is in place, Its me who will migrate their
respective databases for production in MS SQL 2005 server.

Hoping you can provide me the best alterntive to this query.

Thanks a lot.

RDA Setup Environment

Aug 23, 2007

Hi,

I'm currently using the setup below for my RDA testing. Is there any problem with this setup?

connected connected
Client Apps (SQLCE 3.0) -----------------> Windows Server 2003 (Web server) ----------------> Windows XP (SQL2005)

previously was using windows XP to act as web server and have SQL server reside inside the same machine but having 10 connection limitation from windows xp where only 10 client can connect to the machine. The current setup moves the web server out to windows server 2003 and i believe it solves the 10 concurrent connection limitation but how about the SQL server? is it limited to 10 connection from windows server 2003 also? (Windows XP is my testing server, Windows Server 2003 contains important test data for the whole company) . I tried with concurrent RDA pull for 40 client concurrently with 1 pc having 10 client apps but obtain not really satisfying results. Pulling one table (20Mb) needs 1 to 2 mins through LAN networks but pulling concurrently with 40 clients takes up to 20 - 30 mins.

Any advice? Thank you and have a nice day.

Regards,
Ben

Now that I've installed SQL 2005 Express Advanced, shouldn't there be a DB Environment I can work with? There must be a configuration mistake because I can't see the "container?" Prior to SP1 I had SQL 2005 Express installed and I could open and use SQL; however, once I loaded SP1 that stopped. I thought if I load the "Advanced" I would be "back in business."

We're going to be upgrading our Server from 6.5 to 7.0. In addition we're getting a new SQL Server Box.

Which of the following is better: a) Install SQL 6.5 on the new box, restore the DB from old box to the new box, then install 7.0 on the new box and use the upgrade wizard to upsize the DB. (We'll have room to leave the 6.5 devices on the box after upgrading.) or b) Install SQL 7.0 on the new box and upsize the db across the network (100megabit network cards).
