Upgrading System To Run DTSX Packages Instead Of DTS Packages

Aug 2, 2006

Hi all

Our data management system currently runs DTS packages using DTSPKG.dll.

I am currently looking at the possibliity of replacing the DTS packages and SQL 2000 with DTSX packages using SSIS in SQL 2005.

Do I need a new dll? or will the current dtspkg.dll handle the new DTSX packages?

Many thanks in advance!

Calling SSIS Packages From ASP.NET - Packages With File System Tasks End Abruptly

Jan 9, 2007

I've run into a problem with SSIS packages wherein tasks that write or copy files, or create or delete directories, quit execution without any hint of an error nor a failure message, when called from an ASP.NET 2.0 application running on any other machine than the one where the package was created from. By all indications it appeared to be an identity/permissions problem.

Our application involves a separate web server and database server. Both have SQL Server 2005 installed, but the application server originally only had Integration services. The packages are file system-deployed on the application server, and are called using Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime methods. For all packages that involve file system tasks, the above problem occurs.

When the above packages are run using the command prompt (either DTEXEC or DTEXECUI) the packages execute just fine. This is expected since we are using an administrative account. However when a ShellExecute of the same command is called from ASP.NET, the same problem occurs.

I've tried giving administrative permissions to the ASPNET worker process user to no avail.

I have likewise attempted to use the SQL Server Agent job approach but that approach might not be acceptable for our clients since it means installing SQL Server 2005 Database services on the application server.

I have read the relevant threads in this forum, namely http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1044739&SiteID=1 and http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=927084&SiteID=1 but failed to find any solution appropriate for our set up.

Anybody got any idea on how to go about this?

Integration Services :: Remotely Execute Packages On SSIS Server - Packages Are Deployed In File System

Apr 22, 2015

We manage some SSIS servers, which has only SSIS and SSIS tools installed on them and not the sql server DB.

SSIS packages and configuration files are deployed on a NAS. We run the SSIS packages through DTEXEC by logging in to the server.

We want to allow developers to run their packages on their own on the server, but at the same time we dont want to give them physical access on the server i.e we do not want to add them into RDP users list on server properties. We want them to allow running their packages remotely on the server.

One way We could think of is by using powershell remoting and we are working on that. But is there any other way or any tool already present for the same.

DTS Packages (.dtsx) And Automation Through C#

Jul 23, 2007

I have spent the last couple of weeks going through about 15-20 different examples/tutorials on running DTS packages from inside a C# Windows app (and even asp.net). I must have a mental block, because I can't seem to make it click in my head. I have hundreds of DTS packages saved as .dtsx files. I can double click on them and run them perfectly. What I need to do is be able to run them conditionally from inside a windows app. Could anyone point me to a tutorial or example that could help me with this? I've even looked at some VB source to see if I could work it out, but I keep running up against a wall. I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide.

How To Debug DTSX Packages?

Aug 1, 2007

I have some familiarity with DTS packages, and find them easy ( generally) to debug as you can run them step by step and simply find the offending step. when they fail they also put a message box with the error in the centre of the screen. My system has recently been updated and now uses DTSX packages. I can open and veiw these in visual studio, but i cannot run them one step at a time, and they dont give a nice error message when they fail. how do you debug a DTSX package, or at least make debugging it a little easier?

Post Dtsx Packages To Forum

Mar 30, 2007

First off, can you post .dtsx packages to the forum? I always end up cutting and pasting code, which is by is nature incomplete, as it generally has external dependencies (connections, variables).

Perhaps you cannot do so for security reasons?

Second, is there a good blog site that allows you to post .dtsx packages?

I'd rather post .dtsx links than cut and paste code (which half the time formats the code un-recognizably), or even worse, post package xml, which contains the layout information and possibly IL that makes it all but unreadable.

Creating A Package Of Dtsx Packages

Jan 23, 2007

Hi

I am trying to build a package that is comprised of 100+ dtsx packages but cannot seem to get it to work. I have created a new connection where the connectionmanagertype = file and the file path is equal to the folder in which my dtsx files are located. I (location = fileSystem). No matter what I do I get an access denied error that shows the folder location but no package. I manually typed the name of the package in the PackageName property and have pasted in the PackageID in the appropriate property as well but I don't see anything in the PackageNameReadOnly. I have read the MSDN information but I don't see a step by step way to build a package of packages against which I can compare. Can anyone set me straight?

Thanks.

Errors With SQL Cluster Running .DTSX Packages

Sep 25, 2007

I'm experiencing some frustration with my active/passive SQL cluster not running my .DTSX packages. I am hoping someone can shed some light on what I need to do.

I've created some .DTSX packages with the SQL Server Business Intel Dev Studio. I initially built & tested these packages in a non-SQL cluster environment without any problems. I'm now re-creating them to work on our SQL cluster. If I run the package through the Dev Studio it works great.

The packages basically grab .txt files from one of the shared drives (which is a resource of the sql cluster group) and imports the data into the one of the databases. The database does not have any special settings (right-click -> new database... -> enter name -> click ok).

I've setup a SQL Server Agent Job with 1 step with the following properties.
Step name: I Offices
Type: SQL Server Integration Services Package
Run as: SQL Agent Service Account
Package source: File system
Package: G:ImportRAGFLOffices.dtsx

When I run the SQL Server Agent Job through MSSQL Server Management Studio (right-click -> start job) I get an error on "Execute job 'RAGFL TestJob'".

These are the 2 messages that show up when I view the history of the SQL Server Agent job.

Best Method For Running/Executing Multiple DTSX Packages?

May 13, 2008

Hello all -

Based on advice from this board, I am setting up our newly-converted DTSX packages (sql server 2000 (DTS) to 2005 (SSIS) package conversion) to utilize package configurations to make it easier to run them in multiple environments (dev, testing, production, etc...). This seems to be working just fine, but I now have another question.

We have approximately 12 DTSX packages which need to be executed in a specific sequential order. I was wondering what the best / most widely accepted method is to allow for running them as an automated process. If you double click on each DTSX file individually, the "Execute Package Utility" pops up, and you can run the package. I'd like to know the best way for us to be able to run each package, one after the other (each one waiting until the previous one completes before it begins), until they have all processed. It would be nice if it did not rely on SQL Server being installed on the machine on which it is being run...

thanks for all the fantastic support on this site

Upgrading Packages Article

The chapter from my book that talks about upgrading packages from DTS to SSIS has been posted here : http://www.quepublishing.com/articles/article.asp?p=605035&rl=1

Didn't even know it until I happened to be doing a search on upgrading and the article popped up in the search...

How funny is that! :)

Warning: Upgrading SSIS Packages Will Suck

Apr 17, 2007

Just a fair warning for you out there - be aware that if you are using a lot of SSIS intrinsic objects, tasks, components etc which you have used in hopes of reusability - when needing to upgrade or move packages to another location will suck.

Im just trying to move packages from one server to another - none of the packages which use components will work. For example I'm using Konesans Trash Destination - even after proper installation - package cannot find it. (Im real glad I only use 2 components in a few packages - all components will be now removed for sure)

That solidifies my impression that in order to use SSIS you really have to DUMB it down to only using SQL, Script & Data Flow (direct load data only).

SQL 2012 :: Upgrading SSIS Packages With Miscellaneous Files

Mar 2, 2015

I have an SSIS package that was originally written for SQL Server 2008 that needs to be updated. I am interested in moving it to 2012 and using the project deployment model, but it includes a plain text script file in an Execute Process Task call to WinSCP for an SFTP transfer. It appears that by moving from package deployment to project deployment that this file would no longer be bundled with the deployment package.I guess I could copy the WinSCP script to an external file path, but I'd prefer to keep them together for version control if possible.

Storage Of Packages: File System Or Sql Server?

Apr 5, 2006

HI, we are beginning a new project at my company and I was wondering where is the best place to save SSIS packages: file system or SqlServer. I have used other ETL products and they always create a repository on an RDBMS. Since SSIS offers us the choice of DB storage or file system, is there pros and cons of both approach? Will the deployment of our application be simpler by using Sql Server since we would onky move metadata instead of files?

Thank you for your help,

Ccote

Problem In Transporting SSIS Packages From The Local System To Development

Jan 2, 2008

Posts 7

Dear all
I have developed some packages (around 40) on my local system.
now i m trying to move the integration services project on the production server.
when i double click on the intergration services from the local drive of the server all the packages are up(works fine till here)
now i open any of the package-->this is what happens
Prompt1)-->TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio
------------------------------
There were errors while the package was being loaded.
The package might be corrupted.
See the Error List for details.
------------------------------
BUTTONS:
OK
------------------------------

i press ok and then the prompt comes
Prompt2-->There were build errors.Do you want to continue with the last build and continue..yes..no..
i click yes ..and then error comes

prompt3-->
Error loading RTS-IMRB-DISTRIBUTION.dtsx: The connection "Excel Connection Manager" is not found. This error is thrown by Connections collection when the specific connection element is not found.

and finally the prompt for the OLE DB error
prompt 4-->[OLE DB Destination [14]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER. The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "NDELNTX46.IMRB RTS.siddharth" failed with error code 0xC0202009. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the AcquireConnection method call failed.

Possible work around suggested to me was that in the base system(read local) before exporting go to package properties and the security and set the security as "Encrypt all with password" and also put some Password which i did and it worked for one.
other thing i thought off was creating the configuration file but first i thought of fully running one complete package on the production and then think of the configuration file.
so i went inside the invidual excel connection and pointed it to the correct new file location and also edited the OLE DB database connection and put my user name and password and checked save password and trying to run the entire thing.
but still the same problem..
one more thing i observed was that my OLE DB was going off everytime i am running the package.and i have to enter my password again...so othe save password i guess is not working

I know its a little long post..but i wanted to explain the entire process and problem to all with description.
all suggestions are welcome

Thanks in advance
cheers & Happy new year

Help Please - Upgrading To SQL Server 2005 / Setup Of System

Jan 3, 2008

Help please...
We have developed a system for a medium size company in NYC using SQL Server 2000.
We are about to go live and thought it may be a good idea to upgrade first from SQL Server 2000 to 2005.

I believe standard edition would be sufficient but I am not 100% sure... There isn't a whole lot of data but high availability is crucial. I was thinking of a 2-node fail over cluster setup and/or mirroring.
We need only one instance of SQL Server with about 30 client machines accessing the same databases.

Any thoughts/comments as far as:
Standard or Enterprise?
What type of licensing? Support agreement?
What about the best setup for highest availability? (fail over cluster vs. mirroring vs. replication)

Thanks,

Toshu.

DTS Packages

Can you use multiple tables in a DTS job?

I copy a large data table from one database to another every night, but I only want to copy the data since the last time the DTS job ran. I am going to create new job that writes the date of the update to a date table.

I then want the DTS job to compare the invoice date from the datawarehouse table to the last date in the Date table, and only write the data with a newer date.

I know the script if the values were in the same table - but how do I use two different tables?

Changes In Packages

Dec 3, 2007

Hi all,I am creating SSIS packages which has flat files as data source and destination is SQLServer2005.I have successfully created packages for around 100 files. In future if the server is changed or/and the same flat file is moved to another location i cannot execute this created packages. I have to redo my work or i have to edit my packages which is a tedious job.Totally i am having around 750 files and each should have corresponding packages. Is there any better way to handle this changes.

Ummm.... else i put it in another way. Is it possible to create a Front end application in which the user gives the Server name, user name, password and the physical location of the flat files and when submitting this, SSIS package has to be created for the flat file which the user has given.

I browsed the net and found a link where they have given a way to create SSIS package using a program. Can anyone explain in detail about this.http://lakshmik.blogspot.com/2005/05/how-to-programmatically-create-ssis.html
Thanks in Advance.
