Upload Text Files Thru DTS/SSIS
Jan 31, 2007
I have created a DTS package which imports text file into single sql server table with 8 columns (SourceData). The DTS package uses 'Test1.txt' file. Now i have around 200 text files (Test1,Test2,.....Test200). I need to import them one by one into 'SourceData' table. Could you pls. help me out in getting solved.
Thanks,
Hemal

Im trying to upload 1000 txt files into one table in SQL. I'm using the following query, to upload one txt file at a time:
bulk insert [dbo].AAA_2013_2015
from 'dataserverSQL Data FilesSQL_EMELIZFC x Bloque Detallada201308 Detalle FacturasFACT_BLOQ_AGO13 (4).txt'
with (firstrow = 2,
lastrow = ???,
fieldterminator = ';',
rowterminator = '0x0A')
I'm trying that the query skip the last row because gives me the following error:
Msg 4866, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The bulk load failed. The column is too long in the data file for row 1, column 17. Verify that the field terminator and row terminator are specified correctly.
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.
Msg 7330, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot fetch a row from OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)".
know a command to skip the last row, something like lastrow= all-1...or something like that.
I also executed using MAXERRORS command...like this:
bulk insert [dbo].AAA_2013_2015
from 'dataserverSQL Data FilesSQL_EMELIZFC x Bloque Detallada201308 Detalle FacturasFACT_BLOQ_AGO13 (15).txt'
with (firstrow = 2,
fieldterminator = ';',
MAXERRORS = max_errors,
rowterminator = '0x0A')
does not recognize MAXERRORS command, also tried to put a number of error instead of max_errors.

Hi,
I'm trying to join outputs of two text files combined in to one text file. The lenght of both the input text files are same (590)
For example,
If contents of text_file_1.txt is: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
and contents of text_file_2.txt is: bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
My final text file should be :
final_text.txt
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
I use flat file source for both the input file and then use "Union all" and then write out to final text file destination.
The issues is:
The second file (bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb) is coming up first in the output and then there is no carriage return.
My output looks like:
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb...(goes up to 590)aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
What is that I'm missing here. Could some one plese help.
Thanks

I am having a scenario where all the stored procedures are stored in a folder (one sql file per sproc). Stored procedure does not have 'IF Exists .... DROP Procedure' in the script so before creating them we have to drop all sproc manually.
Can anyone help me writing a script / SSIS process to loop through each file in folder and write "IF EXISTS ... DROP PROCEDURE" with the procedure name in it ??
I can create a package that loop through each file in FOR each Loop task but dont know how to write in file using .net
Thanks in advance

So i have about 80 different SSIS PAckages that load different text files into tables. each package has a config file that contains password, server name and user id. I want to forward these packages to a use who will execute them. So instead of giving the user 80 packages to execute manually, how do i put these packages into one parent package so that the user has to only execute this parent package instead of executing 80 different packages NB. package exec is manually. (we will automate later) so this is a temp measure.

I'm working on a web application that uses SQL Server 2000. Once I'm ready to upload my website to a production server, I need to know how to upload my SQL Server database files to the server. Are there actual files that can be uploaded? I've only deployed a website that works with MySQL to a production server, and there were no files to upload... the database had to be created on the server, and then the data itself had to be exported to text files (on my computer), then imported/uploaded to the production server using SQL statements...
How do I do this?
Thanks~

i have tried to move upload of files from SQL2000 to SQl2005.
in SQL2005 i have created a JOB in which has 2 steps,each one of them activates the same batch files i used in SQL2000 (where i have change the server name and so on),for example :
for %%f in ( %BULK_UPLOAD_BASE%Temp%1*.txt) do bcp "db1.dbo.Test_TargetTable" in %%f -S SERVER-REP -U n145 -h "TABLOCK" -e %BULK_UPLOAD_BASE%ErrorErr10.txt -o %BULK_UPLOAD_BASE%LogsOutput10.txt -P n145 -C RAW -f %BULK_UPLOAD_BASE%format_with_RawData_4test.fmt
when irun this code in a bat file, the data is loaded with no problem.
when i run the JOB i see in the LOG that everything was ok, but actually the data fromthe files was not loaded - any idea why?

Hi.
There is a "text" file generated by mainframe and it has to be uploaded to SQL Server. I've reproduced the situation with smaller sample. Let the file look like following:
A17 123.17 first row
BB29 493.19 second
ZZ3 18947.1 third row is longer
And in hex format:
00: 41 31 37 20 20 20 20 20 31 32 33 2E 31 37 20 20 A17 123.17
10: 66 69 72 73 74 20 72 6F 77 0D 0A 42 42 32 39 20 first rowͺBB29
20: 20 00 20 34 39 33 2E 31 39 20 20 73 65 63 6F 6E 493.19 secon
30: 64 0D 0A 5A 5A 33 20 20 20 20 20 31 38 39 34 37 dͺZZ3 18947
40: 2E 31 20 74 68 69 72 64 20 72 6F 77 00 69 73 20 .1 third row is
50: 6C 6F 6E 67 65 72 longer
I wrote "text" in quotes because sctrictly it is not pure text file - non-text binary zeros (0x00) happen sometimes instead of spaces (0x20).
The table is:
CREATE TABLE eng (
src varchar (512)
)
When i upload this file into SQL2000 using DTS or Import wizard, the table contains:
select src, substring(src,9,8), len(src) from eng
< src ><substr> <len>
A17 123.17 first row 123.17 25
BB29 493.19 22
ZZ3 18947.1 third row 18947.1 35
As one can see, everything was imported, including binary zeros. And though SELECT * in SSMS truncates strings upon reaching 0x00's, still all information is stored in tables - SUBSTRINGs show that.
When i upload this file into SQL2005 using SSIS or Import wizard the result is following:
< src ><substr> <len>
A17 123.17 first row 123.17 25
BB29 4
ZZ3 18947.1 third row 18947.1 25
This time table is half-empty - all characters behind binary zeros in respective rows are lost.
I stumbled upon this problem while migrating my DTSes to SSIS packages. Do you think there is some workaround, or i need to turn on some checkbox or smth else could help? Please...

Hi,
My scenario:
I have 4 different flat files types each having different no. of column, order of columns etc. I want to upload all the 4 types into the same destination table in the SQL database. Before uploading I need to apply transformation to each column in the flat files. The transformations could be like
1) Multipying the source column by 100
2) Put an if condition for 2 source columns and then select one column to be copied into the destination.
I have the flat files schema with me and also all the transformations that are required.
Question:
Can SSIS provide me with a component that can read the flat file schema and the transformations from the database and apply them to the source data and then upload it to the constant destination table? Can derived column transformation be provided with the input columns list and the transformation to be done on each dynamically?
Why I want this way?
In future there can be an addition of extra flat file formats and we want to keep the changes to the SSIS packages to he mininum. Just entereing the addiional schema and transformation details in the database should run the package on the new flat file successfully.
Thanks for your time.
Regards,
$wapnil

i have a MSSQL 2000 database with about 30 tables in it. On one of those tables i've defined an full text index on an image field. In this table are around 500 records with binary files.
it functioned well for a time but now when i try to upload a file into the table this goes extremely slow (300 KB takes over 3 minutes).
i tried disabling "change tracking" but this didn't help a thing
adding blobs to other tables (without fulltext index on it) still goes fast.
what could be a reason that the uploading goes so slow??

Hi gurus,
I've created a linked server (and set up the corresponding schema.ini file) in order to perform bulk-inserts from some CSV text files into SQL tables (from my standpoint the text files are just for reading purposes). The linked server works fine (I can select the data in the files without a problem).
Now the question: is possible to automatically detect when one or more of those files change in order to start the import process automatically? Something like having a trigger created on the CSV files Or there's no easy way to do that so I have, to say something, to create a Job that periodically checks if the files have changed programatically (say, recording each file's timestamp everytime is imported and comparing the recorded value with the current one, or whatever)?
Thanks a lot in advance!

I was asked at work to create an audit log to track user changes to our SQL Server 2005 database. My plans were to use a trigger to store the changes in a database table. I was just told that rather then storing these changes the database, that I should write these changes to a text file. I am having problems finding a good example of how to write to a text file in T-SQL. Does anyone have an example of how to do this? Thanks

Hello DBA's:
I want to upload 100 text files to a single table on SQL Server 2000.
Records from these text files would be selected on the basis of a where clause.
What would be the best way of accomplishing this? Using DTS, I can do only one file at a time. Is there a faster approach.
Thanks

Hi,
I have a table T1 with three Cols.
Code VARCHAR(10),
INISetting TEXT,
TSystem VARCHAR(10).
Right now I are storing the INI Files directly in the database.
I would like to move this to text files in to a SAN box and just store the Pointers in the IniSetting Column and name the text files
some thing like Code.txt
When I do a SELECT Code , INISetting , TSystem FROM T1.
I want to read the Contents as is from the Text files stored in the SAN Box?.
Can some one help me with this.
Thanks
Venu

Hi,
I want to import multiple text files into a single table. I know I have to use BCP or DTS. But, I want import all files at once, instead of one at a time. And the file names are in sequence, viz. file1, file2, file3 etc.
Can anybody tell me, How I can achieve this.
Thanks

I would like to export SQLServer data from a table to a text file within a stored procedure that is fired from an after insert trigger. In Oracle the is a UTL_FILE Package that does this. Is there any way to do this in a SQLServer stored procedure.
