T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Unable To Restore Backup File To Different Database

May 28, 2014

I created a dummy database (TomsTest) and then I try to restore my other database "DEV" to it.Normally, you have to use the Move for both the mdf and ldf files to tell it to restore to another database.But the message I am getting is: The file 'D:SQLDataTomsTest.mdf' cannot be overwritten. It is being used by database 'TomsTest'.

USE [master]
RESTORE DATABASE [DEV] FROM DISK = N'D:SQLBackupDEV_backup_2014_05_28.bak' WITH FILE = 1,
MOVE N'Dev' TO N'D:SQLDataTomsTest.mdf',
MOVE N'DEV_log' TO N'D:SQLDataTomsTest_log.ldf', NOUNLOAD, REPLACE, STATS = 5

Of course it is in use, that's always the case. Even if I put it in single use mode, it still doesn't work.I tried it on another machine and had the same problem. Not sure why. If I call it the same name, it works fine but I don't want to overwrite the original database, I just need to get some data from the backup.

A co-worker deleted the log file to a database that was running. At that point the database showed as suspect and stopped running. I was able to detach the database but I am unable to attach the database. I get a msg stating the logfile cannot be found would I like to create a new one. I select yes. I get the following error.

Error 1813: Could not open new database 'dbname'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. Device activation error. The physical file name 'fullpath to the original log file' may be incorrect.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No I am trying to attach database, however I am not able to do so.

The engine is asking me whether I want to continue and create new log
file. I agree to it, however then I am receiving an error:

Error 1813: Could not open new database 'db_name'. CREATE DATABASE
aborted. Device activation error. The physical file name 'E:SQL

Then after I have message than attaching database failed.

In event viewer I have:

In the error log I have:

Unable To Attach SQL Express Database

Apr 19, 2008

Hello,
I have a SQL Express database created with VWD 2005 and I want to attach it to the server using the SQL Server Management Studio. It is not the first time when I attach a database, but now, I don't know from what reason, it is not working anymore. So, I copy/paste the mdf and ldf files from the website location (the SQL Server Management Studio is not opening the folder C:usersmyuser in Vista Home Premium, don't know why) to a new location and try to attach. The error message is:

Unable To Attach SQLExpress Database

Jul 16, 2007

This is by FAR, the most frustrating problem I have dealt with for a while.

I have a project containing a SqlExpress database that I created in Visual Studio 2005. Everything works perfectly on my development machine. However, upon copying the site up to the webserver, I get an error stating:

An attempt to attach an auto-named database for fileD:ContentwwwFMakerApp_DataClassAd.mdf failed. A database with thesame name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is locatedon UNC share

I have read almost every article/forum post that resulted from a search with google. I also searched these forums, to no avail.

Note - SQLExpress had just been downloaded and installed on the server, so it wasn't being used yet. Server is Windows Server 2003.

Here are the following steps I have already taken:

Used SSEUTIL.EXE to verify that another database of the same name was not already attached
Uninstalled & reinstalled SQLExpress multiple times
Temporarily granted 'Full Control' permissions to 'Everyone' on the site folder to verify that it was not a permissions issue.
Created a very simple website, with a new database, one page - with one listbox control, and a sqldatasource. Got the exact same error. Should rule out a problem with my application.
Tried various flavors of the web.config connection string.
Probably other stuff that I forgot about, but will add if I remember.

The only things I could imagine being wrong are either a problem with my connectionString, or the fact that SQLExpress is installed on C:, and webstuff is on D: (Wasn't able to install SqlExpress to D: for some reason)

Connection String
<connectionStrings>
<add name="ClassAdConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;
AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ClassAd.mdf;Integrated Security=true;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>

So I have had like 12 strokes today. If anybody could help me get this fixed, I will spread tales of your awesomeness throughout the lands

I have included some extra info below in case it is needed.
Thanks, Adam.

Unable To Attach To Devenv.exe To Debug

Apr 5, 2006

Before I start peppering this forum with questions I'll start with one that might help me figure out others...

I'm trying to debug a custom component I'm developing. All the texts I've read state that the first thing I should do is attach to the devenv.exe process. When I choose this, the window that lists the available processes I can attach to does not contain devenv.exe.

Is this a security issue? Any other ideas? I'm an administrator on the box. Most of my career's been spent in UNIX environments, so perhaps I'm missing something basic I'm unaware of.

Thanks.

I want to move a database instance (about 50 user databases) to another server, both are running SQL Server 2000. Which method is better, retore from backup files or detach/attach? Some papers said restore amybe cause incorrect login and password transfer. Is it true?

Thanks

How To Attach Or Restore Db From .mdf And Ldf Files After Db Deleted

Aug 19, 2002

First, let me say that I have already reviewed information posted by experts within the chat area.

Someone completely deleted my SQL Server 7 database. I retrieved the .LDF and .MDF files from a network backup. Now I am trying to attach the database. I have tried this without creating an instance of the database by using the attach stored procedure to attache the .LDF and .MDF files I retrieved from the network backup. Also, I have tried it by creating an instance of the database and doing a detach of the newly created db .LDF and .MDF files and an attach of the .LDF and .MDF files I retrieved from the network backup. Neither of these approaches have worked.

Here is what I have tried in the Query Analyzer, but to no avail:

For the following example, I created a database instance called 'qarun_diamond_48_brett' with brand new .ldf and .mdf files and then tried to detach and then attach the .ldf and .mdf files from the network backup:

use master
go
sp_detach_db
'qarun_diamond_48_brett', 'F:APPSSQL 7.0DatabaseDataqarun_diamond_48_brett_log.ldf'

Message: Usage: sp_detachdb <dbname>, [TRUE|FALSE]

use master
go
sp_detach_db
'qarun_diamond_48_brett', 'F:APPSSQL 7.0DatabaseDataqarun_diamond_48_brett.mdf'

Message: Usage: sp_detachdb <dbname>, [TRUE|FALSE]

I tried the following attaches of the retrieved/recoverd .ldf and .mdf from the network to the newly created db instance. That didn't work, so I tried attaching to a db that had not yet been created.

use master
go
sp_attach_db
'qarun_diamond_48_brett2', 'F:APPSSQL 7.0DatabaseDataqarun_diamond_48_brett2_log.ldf'

Message: Server: Msg 1801, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
Database 'qarun_diamond_48_brett' already exists.

If I use a different db name I get the following error:
Server: Msg 5105, Level 16, State 13, Line 1
Device activation error. The physical file name 'qarun_diamond_48_brett' may be incorrect.

use master
go
sp_attach_db
'qarun_diamond_48_brett2', 'F:APPSSQL 7.0DatabaseDataqarun_diamond_48_brett2.mdf'

Message: Server: Msg 1801, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
Database 'qarun_diamond_48_brett' already exists.

I have also tried these statements wtih the EXEC sp_attach_db and EXEC sp_detach_db commands from within the Master db in Query Analyzer.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

-Brett

Exception Error 5123 - Unable To Attach Database

Jan 29, 2008

Hello.

Our GIS group is working with SQL Server 2005 in conjunction with ESRI's ArcGIS software. SQL Server is being used as a test bed until we formally migrate our existing Microsoft Access mdb's over. So, at this time we are conducting various tests and have the freedom to "blow up" our databases.

We are currently testing ArcSDE Workgroup edition, which will only work with SQL Server Express (SSE). SSE will let us create spatial joins and relationships, while maintaining data integrity. So one possible workaround was to detach the database from SQL Server 2005 and then attach it to SSE. Unfortunately, we ran into a problem in re-attaching the database back to SQL Server 2005.

The exact steps are as follows:

Back up database using back up tool in SQL Server 2005.

Detached database from SQL Server 2005.

Attached database to SQL Server Express (hereafter SSE).

Created a table in database while it was attached to SSE.

Detached database from SSE.

Attempt to attach database to SQL Server 2005 failed

Successfully restored database in SQL Server 2005 using Restore tool.
Step number 6 above failed and generated the following error:

Questions:

Why did I get this error?

Can incorrect or missing permission or ownership settings generate this kind of error?

When should one detach/attach a database?

I welcome your assistance and suggestions.

Unable To Attach DataBase In SQL Server 2005 Standard

May 6, 2007

Now that everyone helped me install SQL Server, it's time to use it... then...

I'm trying to work my through the MS Press book ADO.Net Step by Step. After installing the practice files, there is a step to attach the sample database provided. Within the folder which contains the sample files, I'm told to execute an app which I believe was called "Config.exe". This app brings up a form with 3 text-boxes, to collect the Server Name, Database Name, as well as the Database MDF Filename. There are also 2 buttons, "Attach" and "Detach".

This book assumes, that SQL Server Express is installed. In the book, the author does mention that if this isn't the case, to adjust the Server Name as necessary.

(The following do not include the quotes, but you probably already knew that...)

In the form mentioned above, the default Server Name is "(local)SQLEXPRESS",

I changed this to "(local)MSSQLSERVER".

The next text-box for Database Name contains: "AdoStepbyStep"

The last text-box for Database MDF Filename contains: "c:ADO.NET 2.0 SBSSampleDBsAdoStepbyStep_Data.MDF"

The path/spelling of the text in the above is indeed correct. Clicking the "Attach" button, results in the following:

--- ERROR ---

Function: AttachDB

Description: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBMSLPCN]InvalidConnection.

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBMSLPCN]ConnectionOpen (ParseConnectParams()).

I've never used SQL Server, so please any advice needs to be at a relatively elementary level. I've primarily been a mainframe programmer, so this is new to me.

Thanxxxxxxxxxxxxx in advance for any replies!!!

Attach/restore Databases In SQL Server 2000

Jun 19, 2007

Hi,

I've got a question regarding attaching/restoring of DBs and wonder if anyone could help me out.

Does SQL Server 2000 provide a functionality to attach/restore DB automatically? ie, some kind of polling service to attach/restore DB that were detached previously?

Thanks

Automatically Enable Broker After Restore Or Attach

Aug 22, 2007

Is there a way to automatically enable Service Broker on SQL Server 2005 Express Edition after a database has been attached or restored?
My initial idea was to check if broker is disabled whenever the client application starts and enable it from there but the problem with this is that the current user might not have the required permissions. So now I'm looking for another way to enable it right after restore/attach if at all possible. Any ideas would be appreciated.

SQL 2012 :: Attach / Detach Versus Backup And Restore

Mar 20, 2014

We have 5 databases which will sum up to 8+TB, housed in our EDW server. We are planning to migrate to another storage system for better performance.

I am planning Full backup and Differential backup and detach the DB and restore the DB in the new storage system.

Or should I detach,copy the data and log file and attach the files, will this approach have any advantages ?

Backup/Restore Vs Attach/Detach 2000 Database To 2005

Jul 15, 2006

I'm trying to see the differences between Backup/Restore and Attach/Detach. I backup and detach a database from SQL Server 2000 SP3 and then attach and restore it to SQL Server 2005 SP1.

The differences I noticed are:

1. The restored database has a much larger initial size (database size is same) for data and log.
2. The attached database has a last backup date
3. If the backup is restored over a database, the restored database is showing owned by the database owner of the database restored over but syslogins and sysusers do not match.

I don't understand why #1 happens.

Are there any other differences between Backup/Restore and Attach/Detach?

Thanks,

Peter

Error Message: Unable To Start T-SQL Debugging. Could Not Attach To SQL Server Process On 'Server1'

Jan 24, 2008

I've installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional evaluation edition on both my desktop & on the server to try out the Debugger to be used with my Stored procedures

I got this error message every time i try to 'Step into Stored Procedure' from my desktop to connect to the stored procedure which resides on the Server.

Error message: Unable to Start T-SQL Debugging. Could not attach to SQL Server Process on 'Server1'.The RPC server is unavailable

The 'Step into Stored Procedure' works though if I open the stored procedure directly on the server.

Both my PC and Server has been installed with Remote Debugger and my windows login has been assigned permission to debug on the debugger that resides on the Server and has sysadmin server role on SQL 2005 both on PC and Server.

Can someone tell me what i miss out to debug Stored procedure in the SQL Server 2005 on the Server from my PC?

Thanks in advance.

Any way I can recover it?

SQL Server Express: Restore, Backup And Attach Do Not Work Anymore && Database Locations Fault

May 7, 2008

Hello there,

I've some really big problems with SQL Server 2005 Express. I Recently, I had 2 instances on my machine, one was a SQL Server 2000 Developer and the other a 2005 Express Version. The 2000 version was not necessary anymore, so I unstalled it, since then, the Express version keeps having probems.

Under the Server Properties -> Database settings -> Database Locations I've changed the path to D:sqldatamssql, but now, the programm always takes the "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" to store and load the databases, no matter what I do.

And there are more problems see here:

Restoring does not work=======================
I wanted to restore a database called "fw40_admin" from a backup file (.bak), but that didn't work at all, it always says this as an error:

"System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '5(error not found)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'D:sqldatamssqlfw40_admin.mdf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)"

But as soon as I type in the installation path "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" inside the "Restore As" under "Options", it works.

Why does the backup only work in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData", BUT the database locations under the server properties is indicated with "D:sqldatamssql"????

Attaching does not work=======================
Attaching an existing database does not work either. Most databases (mdf) are located on the path D:sqldatamssql, but as soon as I press

Attach Databases -> Add

The dialog window appears with the "D:sqldatamssql" path, but it is unable to find any *.mdfs altough THERE ARE .mdfs in this directory. But Express can find databases in the selected installation: "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData".
Why can't Express see the directory on the D: partition???

What is wrong? Here? Can anybody help me?

An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File (file Location).../Database.mdf Failed. A Database With The Same Name Exists, Or Specified File Cannot Be Opened, Or It Is Located On UNC Share.

Sep 2, 2007

Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
I am having trouble with the following:An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.

RESOLVED RESOLVED An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File &&<file String&&> Failed &&>&&>&&> But ONLY After SSE Reinstall

Sep 16, 2007

RESOLVED RESOLVED RESOLVED

DOH! When I rebuilt the OS, I changed the data partition ID's, and didn't remember to change them in the connetion strings

Not great, but better than continuing to bang head against wall.

Would like to say to MS appreciators that the VS2005 reinstall actually went quite well, considering.

===========================================================================

I built an app, works fine. Had the development environment working fine (VS2005 (SP0) and SQL Server Express). It had been stable for months, no problem.

Then I had to reinstall XP Pro...(finally threw too many conflicting programs into it, I guess...)

I managed to get VS2005 reinstalled ok. However, when I opened and compiled my existing app in VS2005, using Cassini, I got the dreaded error:

An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file <file string> failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

I also get this error for the compiled copy of the app on the same machine, running on IIS. (Where it also previously worked fine).

The Connection strings are all of the form

connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=(specific file string).MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

I appreciate that there are zillions of posts on this issue. I'm hoping that someone might know why this should happen in this particular case.

The thing that's different about this case is that the app was working fine; I have the app deployed on a demo machine and also on a remote server as well as on the development machine.

The only thing that changed is that there was this fresh install of SQL Server Express.

I tried using >> sp_configure user instances enabled','1';RECONFIGURE <<< in SSMSEE, which took, but didn't help.

So something is different in SSE. Since the app is stable everywhere else, I REALLY don't want to go through and adjust the connection strings...MUCH better to figure out what SSE needs to be happy with the existing connection strings...as it was before.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

EDIT----TRIED SOME THINGS:

Changed folder and file permissions to allow ASPNET full access to the .mdf's and log files (though never had to do this before on the development machine.) No change...

Can see the table contents within the .mdf through SSMSE, and also through Server Explorer in VS2005.

So because the problem happens with both IIS and Cassini, I'm assuming it's got to be an issue between ASPNET and SSE.

EDIT --- TRIED SOME MORE THINGS:

I dimly remember that when I had this problem before, it was that the error message was too "dumb". It wasn't my file that had the permissions problems, it was that the SSE System Databases had to have permissions with respect to ASPNET.

I tried to set that up but I'm a complete newb on this area, so I don't know if I did it right. In SSMSE I created a Login for MyComputer/ASPNET, and gave it all permissions and roles, and then made it an owner for the four system databases...but no joy.

Any pointers on this last piece would be helpful.

EDIT - MORE INFO

The error details

[SqlException (0x80131904): An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file <filestring>.MDF failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.]
