Use Trigger To Generate Primary Key
Jan 27, 2004
I have create a recursive triggers in tblIncident. The PKID is the primary key in tblIncident, in this trigger, i'm trying to generate an auto increament primary key from the stored procedure GetMaxId and update to tblINcident, but I face a problem where PKID does not refresh the latest PKID, it always show the default value 0, until I requery the table. How to get the latest PKID?
/* Trigger in tblIncident */
CREATE TRIGGER GetPKID
ON tblIncident FOR
INSERT AS
DECLARE @PKID int
DECLARE @NEWVALUE int
DECLARE PKID_Cursor CURSOR FOR SELECT tblIncident.PKID FROM tblIncident, inserted
where tblIncident.PKID = Inserted.PKID
OPEN PKID_Cursor
BEGIN
FETCH NEXT FROM PKID_Cursor INTO @PKID
WHILE (@@fetch_status = 0)
BEGIN
SET @NEWVALUE = 0
/*Call stored procedure - getmaxid to get the latest PKID */
EXECUTE GetMaxId "IN", @NEWVALUE OUTPUT
Update tblIncident SET PKID = @NEWVALUE WHERE PKID = @PKID
FETCH NEXT FROM PKID_Cursor INTO @PKID
END
END
CLOSE PKID_Cursor
DEALLOCATE PKID_Cursor

We are converting a legacy visual foxpro system to use a SQL back-end.A number of (existing DBF) tables currently have a zero-filled primarykey eg. '000255' which is just an auto-incrementing key - but alwaysstored as a char field with leading zeros.For backward compatibility we are considering retaining this primarykey and using an identity field to auto-generate the next value, thenconvert the new identity value into the new primary key. So ifidentity is 256 then the key field will be assigned '000256'.Now the problem with this is that the primary key must be non-null andunique so must be given a value in the INSERT statement. But, theidentity value isn't available (I presume) until after the INSERTstatement has executed.Is this a "don't go there" kind of problem?ThanksAndrew GrandisonSA Department of HealthAdelaide, South Australia

Hi,
The way i generate my primary keys is to keep a table
PrimaryKeyTable
PrimaryKeyName : varchar (name of the primary key, for example UserID)
PrimaryKeyID : int (the next key should have the number stored in that
field, if it was 12 then next time i add a row the UserID will be 12)
After adding a row, i increment the value of primaryKeyID.
Is there a way to let SQL server to handle the primary key? To let SQL generate the key himself instead of me?
Thanks,

The table in the database has a field called LabID. That field is aninteger and consists of the year plus a counter. For example, thefirst record of 2006 would be "20060001," the second record of 2006would be "20060002" and so on. I'm trying to create an Insert triggerthat can generate the ID value when a new record is inserted, but I'mnot quite sure how to implement that trigger. Can anyone help?

We are having xml data in a column. Is it possible to write a trigger to generate a mail if particular value get inserted in a tag.
For ex:
<File AF="910" PTO="ATN_P76035_PSQO" NNO="54545465" KTNNN="AX2" KL="" AD="99" PrqnT="AX2" Stab="21545" KE="45454" TE="65465" Rsaa="BBBB" AK="54544.AX2.POEAX2.546546546.NONTP.NONTP" AK2="">
In the above xml data if we have the value 21545 in Stab the trigger needs to be executed and mail needs to be sent to a distribution list.
The Trigger should not be initiated if value other than 21545 is updated...

Dear everyone,
I would like to create auto-generated "string" ID for any new record inserted in SQL Server 2000.
I have found some SQL Server 2000 book. But it does not cover how to create procedure or trigger to generate auto ID in the string format.
Could anyone know how to do that?? Thanks!!

Hi,
via VBScript, I am inserting data into one table as below:
Code:
conn.Source = "INSERT INTO img (imageDesc,imageName,imageDate,imageUser,imageIP) VALUES ('"& ni &"','"& fn &"','"& Now() &"',"& Session("MM_UserID") &",'"& Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_HOST") &"')"
In another table, I want to insert the primary key (imageID) of this newly inserted row into a new table called "t_image_Site" along with another value in another column.
Any advice/tutorials... this can be done with a trigger if I'm not mistaken?

I would like to get the primary key values in a DML CREATE TRIGGER as follows:
CustomerID = 12 AND InvoiceID = 50
I create the DML trigger for UPDATE and DELETE only, how do I retrieve the values as above ?
Jon Galloway provided a sample in http://weblogs.asp.net/jgalloway/archive/2008/01.aspx but the Primary Key Field and Primary Key Value were inserted into separate columns while I need to combine the Primary Key Field and Primary Key Value into 1 single field, using his example, I want to form the primary key as:
ScoreId = 423
ScoreId = 3064
etc.
Note that his example only show a single primary key in a table whereas I need to handle multiple primary keys in a table.

I am writing a trigger for getting values to auditlog table when the values gets updated. Below is the code of my trigger.
CREATE TRIGGER [dbo].[Update_Temp] ON [dbo].[Temptable1] FOR UPDATE
AS
DECLARE @bit INT ,
@field INT ,
@maxfield INT ,
@char INT ,
@fieldname VARCHAR(128) ,
@TableName VARCHAR(128) ,
[Code] ....
The code is working fine when the table has primary key associated. However due to some restrictions I will not be able to have a primary key for some tables. I want to implement the same trigger in those tables too. When there is primary key, that primary key needs to get inserted into the audit table and if there is no primary key, i want a specific column value to get inserted instead of the primary key value into the audit table.
For example, i have a student table in which there is a student id, name, dob. there is no primary key defined for the table. So when i update the name or dob, i need the student id to get inserted into the Pk column of the audit table.
I tried modifying the code by checking the @pkcols for Null and if its null to get the old value as the primary key however I was not able to do it .

Hello everybody,I was configuring a SqlDataSource control using SQL Authentication mode.I first added a database file (testdb.mdf) through Solution Explorer-Add New Items. Then through Database Explorer I created a table named "info"Then while configuring the SqlDataSource control I used the SQL Authentication mode and attached the "testdb.mdf" database file.Test Connection showed success. But when I hit the Ok button of the wizard it displayed the following error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance.While configuring the SqlDataSource control I clicked "New Connection". Under Data Source section I tried both Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Database File. And in both the cases I attached a databese file(testdb.mdf). Plz enlighten me on this.Thanks and Regards,Sankar.

Hi,
I have recently been looking at a database and wondered if anyone can tell me what the advantages are supporting a unique collumn, which can essentially be seen as the primary key, with an identity seed integer primary key.
For example:
id [unique integer auto incremented primary key - not null],
ClientCode [unique index varchar - not null],
name [varchar null],
surname [varchar null]
isn't it just better to use ClientCode as the primary key straight of because when one references the above table, it can be done easier with the ClientCode since you dont have to do a lookup on the ClientCode everytime.
Regards
Mike

Hey,
I'm new to this whole SQL Server 2005 thing as well as database design and I've read up on various ways I can integrate business constraints into my database. I'm not sure which way applies to me, but I could use a helping hand in the right direction.
A quick explanation of the various tables I'm dealing with:
WBS - the Work Breakdown Structure, for example: A - Widget 1, AA - Widget 1 Subsystem 1, and etc.
Impacts - the Risk or Opportunity impacts for the weights of a part/assembly. (See Assemblies have Impacts below)
Allocations - the review of the product in question, say Widget 1, in terms of various weight totals, including all parts. Example - September allocation, Initial Demo allocation, etc. Mostly used for weight history and trending
Parts - There are hundreds of Parts which will eventually lead to thousands. Each part has a WBS element. [Seems redundant, but parts are managed in-house, and WBS elements are cross-company and issued by the Government]
Parts have Allocations - For weight history and trending (see Allocations). Example, Nut 17 can have a September 1st allocation, a September 5th allocation, etc.
Assemblies - Parts are assemblies by themselves and can belong to multiple assemblies. Now, there can be multiple parts on a product, say, an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), and so those parts can belong to a higher "assembly" [For example, there can be 3 Nut 17's (lower assembly) on Widget 1 Subsystem 2 (higher assembly) and 4 more on Widget 1 Subsystem 5, etc.]. What I'm concerned about is ensuring that the weight roll-ups are accurate for all of the assemblies.
Assemblies have Impacts - There is a risk and opportunity impact setup modeled into this design to allow for a risk or opportunity to be marked on a per-assembly level. That's all this table represents.
A part is allocated a weight and then assigned to an assembly. The Assemblies table holds this hierarchical information - the lower assembly and the higher one, both of which are Parts entries in the [Parts have Allocations] table.
Therefore, to ensure proper weight roll ups in the [Parts have Allocations] table on a per part-basis, I would like to check for any inserts, updates, deletes on both the [Parts have Allocations] table as well as the [Assemblies] table and then re-calculate the weight roll up for every assembly. Now, I'm not sure if this is a huge performance hog, but I do need to keep all the information as up-to-date and as accurate as possible. As such, I'm not sure which method is even correct, although it seems an AFTER DML trigger is in order (from what I've gathered thus far). Keep in mind, this trigger needs to go through and check every WBS or Part and then go through and check all of it's associated assemblies and then ensure the weights are correct by re-summing the weights listed.
If you need the design or create script (table layout), please let me know.
Thanks.

Hi all
I have the following table
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[property_instance] (
[property_instance_id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[application_id] [int] NOT NULL ,
[owner_id] [nvarchar] (100) NOT NULL ,
[property_id] [int] NOT NULL ,
[owner_type_id] [int] NOT NULL ,
[property_value] [ntext] NOT NULL ,
[date_created] [datetime] NOT NULL ,
[date_modified] [datetime] NULL
)
I have created an 'artificial' primary key, property_instance_id. The 'true' primary key is application_id, owner_id, property_id and owner_type_id
In this specific instance
- property_instance_id will never be a foreign key into another table
- queries will generally use application_id, owner_id, property_id and owner_type_id in the WHERE clause when searching for a particular row
- Once inserted, none of the application_id, owner_id, property_id or owner_type_id columns will ever be modified
I generally like to create artificial primary keys whenever the primary key would otherwise consist of more than 2 columns.
What do people think the advantages and disadvantages of each technique are? Do you recommend I go with the existing model, or should I remove the artificial primary key column and just go with a 4 column primary key for this table?
Thanks Matt

When a row gets modified and it invokes a trigger, we would like to beable to update the row that was modified inside the trigger. This is(basically) how we are doing it now:CREATE TRIGGER trTBL ON TBLFOR UPDATE, INSERT, DELETEasupdate TBLset fld = 'value'from inserted, TBLwhere inserted.id= TBL.id....This work fine but it seems like it could be optimized. Clearly we arehaving to scan the entire table again to update the row. But shouldn'tthe trigger already know which row invoked it. Do we have to scan thetable again for this row or is their some syntax that allows us toupdate the row that invoked the trigger. If not, why. It seems likethis would be a fairly common task. Thanks.

Hi,
I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question.
I run an update statement like "Update mytable set status='S' " on the SQL 2005 management Studio.
When I run "select * from mytable" for a few seconds all status = "S". After a few seconds all status turn to "H".
This is a behaviour when you have an update trigger for the table. But I don't see any triggers under this table.
What else would cause the database automatically change my update?
Could there be any other place I should look for an update trigger on this table?
Thanks,

The trigger name is kept in a table, and apon deleting the record i want to use the field name to delete the trigger
I have the following Trigger
the error is at
DROP TRIGGER @DeleteTrigger
I'm guessing it dosen't like the trigger name being a variable instead of a static name
how do i get around this?

Hi,
I have a trigger set on TABLE1 so that any update to this column should set off trigger to write to the AUDIT log table, it works fine otherwise but not the very first time when table1 has null in the column. if i comment out
and i.req_fname <> d.req_fname from the where clause then it works fine the first time too. Seems like null value of the column is messing things up
Any thoughts?
Here is my t-sql
Insert into dbo.AUDIT (audit_req, audit_new_value, audit_field, audit_user)
select i.req_guid, i.req_fname, 'req_fname', IsNull(i.req_last_update_user,@default_user) as username from inserted i, deleted d
where i.req_guid = d.req_guid
and i.req_fname <> d.req_fname
Thanks,
