Make Password Expire

Apr 29, 2008

Hi all,Suppose I have a SQL database table called Customer Info which contains six fields namely Customer ID, Address, First , Last Name , Password, and Time Remaining.  The Time Remaining field contains the amount of time that a customer has before his or her password expires. I would like info in this field to be in hours and minutes and when it reaches zero, I would like the password to be deleted from the database. So I have two questions and please take into consideration that I am using dot net 2.0.1) Can this be done without having to write a custom function?2) If this can only be done by creating a custom function, how would I get the function to communicate with the database, in other words how would I let the function know that a customer's time is up? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance for your help.

How Can You Force A Password, From A Sql Login, To Expire

Aug 31, 2006

How can you force a password, from a sql login, to expire?

I would like to use the password expiration feature for sql logins in SqlServer 2005. The msdn document provides example code for SqlClient SqlConnection.ChangePassword like in Bob Beauchemin's book. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlconnection.changepassword.aspx

There is a modify_date in the system view sys.sql_logins but that is read-only.

Thanks,

How NOT To Expire The ReportSession And ControlID In The Request

Feb 22, 2007

This question is related to VSTS and above parameters in the request. Question is:

A script created with VSTS for testers has hard coded values for ReportSession and ControlID in the requests, These IDs are expired after some time and scripts fails to run after few hours. Can some one tell me how to set the session expiration time on these ID's in the Report server so I can increase the value to 60*24*365 (1 year) this would solve my problem with hard coded values in the scripts for above mentioned IDs.

Design Question About Status And Expire Date

Jul 23, 2007

I have a design question that I was hoping you all can help with.

When I normally design a table I always make sure to include a status field. This way I can "delete" a record without actually having to delete it, just update the record to a status which signifies deleted. This ensures my users have an undelete capability as well as safesguarding against the "mad clickers" which click right through the "You are deleting this record..." alerts.

I have been recently adding tables which have temporary records and are meant to expire at a certain date. I have designed these tables to have an expiration date field AND a status field.

My question is this: What is the normal convention relating to these types of records/tables? Should queries using these types of tables query them using the status AND the expiration date? Should you create a job that updates the records status based on the expiration date being passed. Should you use a view that only displays current records based on expiration date?

I just want to make sure Im following standard practice as I design these types of tables.

Thanks for your help!

Need Assistance In Determining Expiring (and Soon To Expire) Sql Accounts

Jul 31, 2007

I have a question regarding notification of password expirations.

Background: My workplace will soon be enforcing the password policy and password expiration facilities in SQL Server 2005. My understanding (and correct me if I am wrong) is that the period of validity for a password before expiration occurs comes from either active directory, or where there is no AD, the local machine security policy.

Because we are on a Novell network our SQL2K5 servers are all mixed authentication. For development purposes we are each given a separate account. Our applications, too, use sql accounts (not windows accounts) for database access. Having a development account expire unexpectedly is no problem; we'll change those passwords as they need to be. What I am concerned with is the accounts our applications use to access the database server; like most IT shops, our applications need to be available with interruptions in service as minimal as possible.

I would like to create and schedule a report to run every morning listing those accounts that are about to expire, or have expired, so that those passwords can be changed with little to no interruption in service.

Question: Where do I pull this data from? I couldn't find anything in the BOL, or online (so far), giving the details of how to determine when a particular account is nearing expiration, or has expired.

I would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer.

Best,
B.

Second User Trying To Connect Generates: Cannot Open User Default Database. Login Failed.

Apr 25, 2007

Hi, I'm new to SQL Express 2005.
I found information regarding : "Cannot open user default database. Login failed."on this forum but I think that in my case it's a bit different issue.
I have a website (ASP.NET 2.0) accessing DB, in the mean time Windows Service tries to update some data in the same DB (Service runs as NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SYSTEM). The second connection is rejected: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user ....".
Problem occurs only when both: service and website are running at the same time. So service and website are running without problems when they are connecting DB exclusively.
My connection string is:
"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|DataDirectory|spider-lab.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

I would be grateful if you can help me

Login Failed For User 'testuser'. The User Is Not Associated With A Trusted SQL Server Connection.

Aug 19, 2006

Hi,
I have a copy of VS2005 and i have installed the Microsoft SQL Server Developer Edition
I am trying to do my first connection using ASP.net (yay for me...) and it has failed...with this error..Login failed for user 'testuser'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

can someone please point out why? yes i know that the error seems pretty straight forward but how do i fix it? like how do i make the user a trusted server connection? where do i do it? and what are the steps? the user is an administrator and by rights should have all access to everything....

connection string

SqlConnection MySQLConnection;              MySQLConnection = new SqlConnection("server=cmptrname\databsename;uid=testuser;password=password;database=mytest");

btw while your reading do you have any examples of opening a db with the connection string in the web.config file? because i get some error "connection string has not been initialised"  using the
system.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings.Get
i though i would stick to the top code first before i tackled the web config error first....

Thanks heaps

SQL 2012 :: Moving SSIS Solution To Another User - Reset User Encryption Key

Oct 22, 2014

I have an SSIS package built by another developer, and now that I'm running it under my login the passwords won't save. The solution and packages are setup with ProtectionLevel EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey, but how do I get the User Key to reset so I can now save passwords? I can re-enter them, but whenever I enter hte password and test it then click OK it still has the red arrow next to the connection as if there's an error. I can create new connections and those passwords save fine, but with 40-50 items in this package I hate the thought of having to go into each and change the connection.

I tried changing the package and solution to DontSaveSensitive then rebuilding and closing then reopening, I hoped there was some option to reset the User Key just as if I created the solution. If this option doesn't exist why?

Help:SQLExpress User Instance Fails For Normal User; Works For Administrator

Jan 22, 2008

I'm using the RTM version of Visual Studion 2008 and SQLServer Express.

Logged in as an administrator, I can create a connection to an mdf file and all is well.

As a normal user, attempting to create a connection gives the message "sqlservr.exe has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I have tried this with UAC turned on and turned off. The result is the same. In Services I can see that SQLEXPRESS is running, but each time I try to connect, I get the "stopped working" message.

For existing database programs that have the .mdf file stored in the project folder, I can run the program in the VS IDE on my XP machine and on my Vista machine as administrator, but not as a normal user.

I'm not looking for a workaround to make this work once, but the cause and solution to the problem. This is for an introductory VB textbook and we must be able to move a database program from one machine to another and make it work. Everything I have read says that SQLExpress should be able to do that.

Can anyone help me with this?

Migration Problems From SQL 2000 To SQL 2005: User Cannot Find The User 'RSExecRole'

Hello,

I am trying to migrate reporting services from SQL server 2000 to SQL 2005. I followed the migration steps listed in one of the TechNet documents. Installed SQL 2005 and SP2.

Backed up existing SQL 2000 databases and restored on SQL 2005.

Went to Configuration tool and then to the Database setup. Connected to SQL 2005.

Clicked on the Upgrade button. The upgrade fails and I always get the following errors:

"The database version (C.0.6.54) does not match your reporting services installation. You must upgrade your Reporting services database"

Then I get this exception:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot find the user 'RSExecRole', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.

DB Engine :: Extract All Privileges And User Password For A User In DDL Format For Server?

Jul 12, 2010

My goal is to write a DR plan where i am restoring all user databases onto a diffrent server in a event of hardware failure. I was trying to figure out a way to extract DDL of user accounts and their permissions on all user databases so i can simplify my DR documentation.

This is the plan I came up with...to restore all system and user dbs on a different Physical SQLServer.

1. build named instance $PROD

2. restore master database

    - startup sqlserver in single user mode -m or DAC sqlcmd -S ServerName -U sa -P<xxx> –A
    net stop MSSQLSERVER$PROD
    net start MSSQLSERVER$PROD -m
    - restore database master from disk e:master.bak with replace;

3. start sqlserver normally

4. stop SQLServer agent

5. restore msdb

-restore database msdb disk e:msdb.bak with replace;

6. restart SQLServer

7. Restore User Databases.

8. Run Sp_change_users_login for all users

-Sp_Change_users_logins 'auto_fix','username'
