Is there a way to find out my user id and password that should be used in my connection string? If I can not find this information out for myself, do I need to go to some type of system administrator.
Here is the connection string in my web.config file.
<connectionStrings>
<add name="SPK" connectionString="Server=localhost; User ID=AppUser;Password=meander;Database=atstdb01;

I'm trying to setup a dynamic ole db connection using the SA user ID, it has to be dynamic because the server name will change and it has to be SA because we're pulling information from system databases that some users don't have access to.
If I setup a regular static connection using SA credentials it works like a charm of course. When I create an expression to use the User:erver variable it doesn't work, it throws an error message saying that "The login failed for user sa" among other things, I'm thiking that the sa's password is not being saved.
Where exactly do I place a password for dynamic connections using sql server users? On the connection string? On the password property of the source? Any ideas?
The problem I am facing is related to dynamic configuration of package one of the package connection is DB2 connection, I tried to set the expression connection string for that connection to the variable which contains the connection string to the DB2 but when I set connection the String property then i get the error message in transformation that password is missing, I dont want to write password in connection String for security reasons so I tried to save password in connection which is not helpful I am getting the same error message package security setting I changed to "Encrypt Sensitive Data with User Key" , anywayout to overcome this problem?
Just downloaded and installed the VS 2008 Express and created/tested some websites. I have done several aspx websites using VS 2005 during the last 2 years. Still I don't quite understand the details of coding the database connection and DataBing. For example, what does 'providerName',and Integrated Security really mean?Why in the Web.config file these are providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" and Integrated Security=True? Why in Default.aspxthere are both ntegrated Security=True;and USER ID=WEB; Password=webwebweb1". I know these may deal with the authentication mode of my SQL Serverdatabase.For the VS 2008 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express, I installed in my XP home PC, I used the file system websites, If I upgrade to XP Pro and install IIS web server, and use SQL Server 2005, what might be different? Jeffrey Web.config <connectionStrings> <add name="NorthwindConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=D5MRY6G1SQLExpress;Initial Catalog=Northwind;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings>Default.aspx <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="Data Source=D5MRY6G1SQLExpress;Initial Catalog=Northwind;Integrated Security=True; USER ID=WEB; Password=webwebweb1" ProviderName="<%$ ConnectionStrings:NorthwindConnectionString.ProviderName %>"MasterDetail.aspx <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource2" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:NorthwindConnectionString %>"
Hi. New to ASP.NET and first time posting. My web app connects to a SQL database - SQL authentication. Users login to the web app through the login server control. Once authenticated, it is my understanding that the user name and password are stored on the client as a cookie. How do you programmatically get this user info and use it for the userid and password parameters of the connection string? Is there a better way to use the authenticated user info to access a SQL database? Thanks
Hi All, His there any way to build a connection string to sql server based on the current user credential? I mean, intead of using user id=Adminpassword=adminPass Is it possible to do something like user id= Context.User.IDpass=??? I'm asking cause, iI don't want to use impersonisation in my code.So that I can be sure logged user only sees what they can (I'm a newbie, so this whole thing may makes no point(thanks for clarifying
I’m working with a team of programmers who are in the process of upgrading an older ASP application to ASP.NET 2.0 (VB). The existing application connects to the SQL Server Database using different Logins, depending on the User logged into the ASP Application.
We are hoping to do the same using ASP.NET 2.0, although we haven’t been able to find a simple solution. The most feasible solution we have found includes programmatically trapping all the Selecting etc events and changing the SqlConnection at run time. This allow for ease during Designing of the Web Pages, but implementation requires adding code to each web page (>100 pages).
We are hoping there may be a simple solution which can be implemented once for the application where the event can be trapped at the application level, and the SqlConnection set at this point. Or possibly another type of solution such as creating a new class etc that can be used?
Does anyone have a simple solution where the username / password for the Database Connection can be set at run time?
Whenever I use "User Instance=True" as in the connection string below, I get an invalid connection string error. If I take it out, the connection string generates other errors.
My goal is to write a DR plan where i am restoring all user databases onto a diffrent server in a event of hardware failure. I was trying to figure out a way to extract DDL of user accounts and their permissions on all user databases so i can simplify my DR documentation.
This is the plan I came up with...to restore all system and user dbs on a different Physical SQLServer.
1. build named instance $PROD
2. restore master database
- startup sqlserver in single user mode -m or DAC sqlcmd -S ServerName -U sa -P<xxx> –A net stop MSSQLSERVER$PROD net start MSSQLSERVER$PROD -m - restore database master from disk e:master.bak with replace;
3. start sqlserver normally
4. stop SQLServer agent
5. restore msdb
-restore database msdb disk e:msdb.bak with replace;
This is my first time to deploy an asp.net2 web site. Everything is working fine on my local computer but when i published the web site on a remote computer i get the error "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed" (only in pages that try to access the database) Help pleaseee
All -- Please help. I have some questions about connection strings.
BACKGROUND...
Note that I am using the "SQL Native Client OLE DB Provider", SQL Sever 2005 Express, ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VS.NET 2005. Note that I do not want to use the "Attach a database file" type of connection string. Note that I am using the site http://www.ConnectionStrings.com as a reference. Note that this "Standard security" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Uid=MyDatabaseUser;Pwd=MyDatabasePassword;" />...does not work and causes the following run-time error...A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) Note that this "Trusted connection" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />...works but is less-than ideal because it uses a Trusted Connection rather than a Username/Password combination.
QUESTIONS... (A) What exactly does the error in Item 4 mean? (B) Do 4 and 5 imply that one must use a Trusted_Connection for all SQL Server 2005 Express connection strings when the database does not reside in the web application's App_Data folder or use a "Attach a database file" type of connection string? (C) Are there any alternatives? (D) What do you suggest?
I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
Both the OLE DB Connection and ADO.Net Connection in SSIS Package does not remember password.
Im connecting to a SQL Server 2000 box using its sa password as test.
The SSIS package runs fine when you first set up the connection in bids
The bottom line is that SSIS keeps forgetting the password I feed into the two Connections that I'm using. I double-click a connection, type the password in, check "Save my password" and hit "OK" but the password disappears from there whenever I run the package or double-click the connection again.
is there any known workaround for this issue as I would like to schedule my SSIS package using a SSIS Step in a SQL Server 2005 Agent job.
the only thing I found when googling this error was link below but the workaround described here is a little harsh
My users are unable to view reports on server A. When trying to access it shows up as users have no access to the reports. We have another server B which also deploys the same set of reports,to the same set of users as Server A.Users are able to view the reports on Server B. Both server B & A are used for deploying reports that are created on another development server.I am very new to the concepts of IIS and report administration.Could someone tell me what I can start checking on? What are the settings that I can compare on both server ?
If I am not very clear on the problem explained above.Do let me know I would be glad to explain futher.
I am havining problems connecting to my database in some projects. I installed MSDE and didn't get prompted for any passwords. When I Initialize the connection and use: Integrated Security=aspi, the connection works ok for some projects but not for others, it doesn't seem to work with a server-side script block or from a sql dattabase that I created in the server explorer in visual studio VB.NET. When I test the dattabase connection in server explorer it works fine.
Is this intergrate securtiy supposed to work only with applications that connect to sample databases like the pubs database, and also not in server-side script?
How do I create a username and password for a default instance of MSDE?
I have found setup instruction on upgrading MSDE to create a username and password but I am not upgrading.
If I do create a username and password will initializing the connection with: Intergrated Security = aspi, still work?
I would apprecate any help I could get as I am a newbee. Many thanks, Glen Conaway
I have just installed MSDE (first time ever). I am now trying to work with it (first time ever) Most tools I now find I need to use, ask simple questions like:
Name of Server: User Name: Password:
I know the name of the server - fantastic I did not specify a user name or password when installing -
WHAT DOES IT WANT ????
ie, How do you specify the user name and password AFTER installing the server.

Can the user change their password in Enterprise Manager? When they follow the documentation, this does not seem to work unless they are sa: (I know about sp_password....we are trying to find a GUI method for typical user.)
Expand a server group; then expand a server. Expand Security; then click Logins. In the details pane, right-click the login to modify, and then click Properties. In Password, on the General tab, enter a new password. Confirm the password.
Is it possible for the SA to find out a current user's password. I know that it is possible for the SA to change the user's password, but I am lost as to how to find the user's current password. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
My SQL Server is running as a Domain user account and it asked me to enter the password for thr Domain user account when I was changing the Startup account from Local to Domain user. My QUESTION here is: Is there a way or command for me to change the password automatically on the Services account, if I change the password for the Domain User account/.
I newly installed SQL Server 2005 .I did not mention any username and password during installation.But now i want to specify one.Can you tell me how to do so .My Operating System is WindowsXp.
Hi all, I can run the import/exp through the utility and link to oracle to extract data via OLE DB ORACLE interactively,it run prefectly ok.
However, when I try to schedule as a package and jobs, it always give me invalid password/username. Why the username/password not save or somehow it wouldn't accept when run as package or jobs?
I have a database app that deploys with sql 2005 express to each end-user. I would like to install sql 2005 express using Windows Authentication only. In this case, should I bother to set an sa password? And if I do set the sa password, how would I go about making sure that the sa password is different for every installation of sql express? Would it be recommended to save every end-user's sa password (possibly tens of thousands of passwords) just in case sql maintenance needs to be done on their computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Is there a T-SQL command or script that would help me in retrieving a lost SQL User password? I have just migrated a SQL server instances from one server to another, and in order to modify the SSIS packages, I need the password for the user that it uses. I would much rather know the existing password rather than change it.
Can I find out the password of an aliased databases user? We have a third party app that uses one but it has no corresponding server login so I don't know what the password is set to and I need to change it.
A user forgot her password, how do I reset her password? sp_password require a former password to change, and I'm unable to do that since she forgot her's
Is there an automatic way of changing the Domain user password getting used for running the SQL Server as a Domain user account? I'm taking about EM---Security----Domain User name and the password getting used for running the SQL Server?
