User Un-able To Connect To Integrated Services Within SSMS

Apr 17, 2008

Hi,
I am able to run an SSIS script from BI Visual Studio no problem, I am also able to connect to SSIS within SSMS successfully. I have system access rights to the Database Engine of the same server name.

However I have a user who also has full system access rights to the Database Engine of the same server name. However he can only connect to the database engine, he cannot connect to SSIS within SSMS, but he can successfully execute a SSIS script within BI Visual Studio which is targeted to the same server name which he can€™t connect to within SSMS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Kieran.

SSMS Cannot Connect Through Object Explorer To Anything

May 16, 2006

I've installed SQL Server 2005 SP1 RTM on a Windows 2003 R2 machine (machine A), and my local workstation (machine B).

From machine B, I can use SSMS to connect to SQL Server on machine A. This is using either "New Query" or "Object Explorer".

However, on machine A, SSMS can only connect to machines A or B using the "New Query" option. If I try "Object Explorer" for either, I get the error message "Failed to retrieve data for this request... urn could not be resolved at level Configuration."

I'm not sure what died (no pun intended) since the last time this worked. Any thoughts on this?

SSMS Fails To Connect To SQL 2005

Sep 21, 2007

We are running SQL 2005 Standard on Windows 2000 Server Standard. We are trying to connect via SSMS with the Object Explorer to the server and it is failing with an error message stating:

"An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.

Additional Information:
Error executing extended stored procedure: Invalid Parameter (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 22001)

Using profiler, I tracked down that it is a call to xp_instance_regread. This is something that SSMS is issuing - not me.

We've found in the past that rebooting the server fixes the problem. But it keeps cropping up. The only thing running on this server is SQL 2005 - so if something is monkeying with the registry - it's got to be SQL Server itself.

Querying works just fine - we can use the editor to perform queries without any issue - it's just explorer that goes kaboom.

We have SP2a installed on the server and on most (if not all) of the clients.

This is getting frustrating because it's a production server and we're having to reboot this to fix it.

Unable To Connect To SSRS Within SSMS

Apr 9, 2008

Hi,
In a nutshell I'm unable to connect to SSRS within SSMS yet I can connect to SSIS, SSAS and the Database Engine within SSMS from the same named server instance ("BOODEMO")

"SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration" reports that service status SSRS (DEMO) is running.

The only other problem that I have found which may be linked is that within "Reporting Services Configuration Manager BOODEMO" there is a red circled crossed next to "Report Manager Virtual Directory", yet this application has just recently reported that I successfully created a virtual directory.

Any help or constructive guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Kieran.

Cannot Connect To Remote SSRS Instance With SSMS

Jun 13, 2006

I recent installed a named instance of SSRS 2005 on a remote server. The server has a side by side install of SSRS 2000 and SSRS 2005, with the SSRS 2005 being a named instance. The server also has SSL and MS Sharepoint Portal Server installed.

When I try and connect to the SSRS 2005 instance with my client install of Mangement Studio, I get the error message:

"The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish a trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. (System.Web.Services)

Additional Information: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure. (System)."

Obviously, this is a SLL issue, but, not being a security guru, I have no clue on how to fix this. I do know the certificate is valid, not expired and properly working. Both installs of SSRS are set up using the SSL certificate. Also, I am not connecting to SSIS with Management Studio, as I heard there is a bug connecting to both SSRS and SSIS at the same time.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!!

Win NT Integrated Logging: User Names Have Underscore(_)

Jan 8, 1999

I want to establish logging using NT Security. The problem is that user names in NT have underscore(_). When I establish NT Scurity in SQL security manager, SQL Server tries to add blank names as login id and they will not go through. Is it manadatory to remove underscore from username?

Because of structrual hierarchy, I have different groups in NT to be mapped to SQL Server groups and each group has different permission on SQL tables. In some cases we might have same users in more than one group. I read that it is not possible if you use NT integrated security. Is there any thing that can be worked around this and is this problem still exists in SQL 7.

Thank you in advance

Cannot Connect To Server Through Ssms - Cannot Generate Sspi Context

Aug 1, 2007

Hi,

I have gone through so many kb articles to understanding the problem, but no luck as yet.

Here is the situation:

I have two dev servers : Server A and Server B. Both are set up in an identical fashion. Windows 2003 sp2, Sql Server 2005 sp1 Developer Edition, both are on the same domain, Both have all the three protocols enabled: Shared Memory, Tcpip, and Named Pipes in that order. I can ping both servers, and telnet using the default port. Both have only default instances. Both use the same domain user account for sql service. Both have the error in the log saying that spn could not be registered so authentication may fall back to NTLM.

Here is the issue: When I try to register Server A specifying tcp-ip connection, I am successful and I can see that the authentication is NTLM - is as expected. since the spn registration did not happen and since the sqlservice account is not a domain admin, the authentication used NTLM over tcp-ip. However, I try to register Server B specifying tcpip, I get a cannot generate sspi context error. Why did the authentication not fall back to NTLM as in Server A? From what I read in the KB articles, I asked our network admin to check up the spn, but he assures me that spn were never manually registered.

Can somebody throw more light on this issue?

Thanks
KRSE

Integrated Security And Login Failed For User 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'

Jun 17, 2006

I got a website using .Net v2.0.xxx and SQL Server Express 2005 in a Win2003 Domain Controller machine. Both website and SQLServer is running on the same machine. Website and SQLServer are configured to accept only Integrated Windows Authentication. Domain Users group is added in SQLServer logins list and given Read and Write access to the database used by the website. Also Domain Admins groups is added and given full permission to the same database.

I thought since website will run only with login details from Active Directory, SQL Server connection is also going to be validated against the same login details. But I felt I got the whole concept wrong when I received the error mentioned in subject line.

Can anyone please explain the best way to connect to database in above-mentioned context. Please remember that I need to implement different rights on the database for 'Domain Users' and 'Domain Admins' group. If there is a better approach than using these groups, lemme know please.

Thanks,

Integrated Video In Reporting Services?

Dec 11, 2007

Hello,

After searching the SQL reporting services forum for a while, I decided to lay this problem before you.
I am faced with the following problem:
I want to generate a report containing video data, this videodata is streamed into a SQL 2005 database.
The main question I have is whether it is at all possible to show moving images in an report? (for instance with a CRI?)
Or should I look in another direction (I initially thought of an external link to HTML file with an MediaPlayer Object and having the file stored on a harddisk for instance?)
Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

SQL 2012 :: Restricting What A User Can View In SSMS

Feb 5, 2015

I want to provide access to one of my users to a database on the production server. I do not want this user to be able to view anything other than the tables in that database, or the other databases on my production server.

I gave him access to one DB - TestDB- and made him data_reader on that DB. I had set that as his default database. However, when he logs in using SSMS he can see from Object Explorer a listing of all the databases on that server, although he can't access any of those. This is an external user and I don't want him to see any of that stuff, including other objects (SPs, Views, etc.,) even within TestDB.

To summarize, I want to grant access to a windows user to see/select from ONLY tables in TestDB of my production server, and I do not want him to be able to see any objects other than tables of this DB from SSMS.

Is there a development environment for Reporting Services (2005) that is integrated with source control?

You can use Visual Studio to develop reports and place them under source control. But as far as I can tell, you cannot implement security, scheduling, etc. through Visual Studio. For these you can use a second environment, e.g. SQL Server Management Studio - but is this environment integrated with TFS?

In other words, is there a single development environment, integrated with TFS, where you can develop all aspects of Reporting Services reports?

Problems Configuring SQL Reporting Services In SharePoint Integrated Mode

Apr 13, 2008

I am trying to follow the instructions on:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb677365.aspx
they contain many "if"s and links to other sites and I got totally confused and stuck.
The idea is - I need to have one machine with SQL for reporting services and SharePoint databases and the reporting services and the other machine for a complete SharePoint installation (the main server of the farm)

Now I have done the following:
two servers (lets call them SQL and MOSS)

The domain contains the following users:
sqlservices: for running all the SQL services and reporting services
moss: for administering MOSS databases
moss-services: for running all the MOSS services
Machine SQL - installed Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1, joined to the domain as SQL
The following is done from a local Administrator account:
IIS 6 with ASP.NET installed
SQL Server 2005 with SP2, Reporting services installed but not configured
all the services are running as domainsqlservices
.NET 3.0 installed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918642 fix installed
done WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727aspnet_regiis €“i
MOSS as Web Front installed, not configured

Machine MOSS - installed Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1, joined to the domain as MOSS
The following is done from a local Administrator account:
IIS 6 with ASP.NET installed
.NET 3.0 installed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918642 fix installed
done WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727aspnet_regiis €“i
Computers->My computer->DCOM Config->IIS WAMREG admin Service->PropertiesSecurity->Customize->Edit, added domainmoss-services and domainMOSS users with rights Local launch, Local activate
MOSS Complete installed, configured for: New server farm
Database server: SQL
Username: domainMOSS
Port: Default
Auth: NTLM
SharePointRS.msi installed to enable RS in SharePoint Admin page
Then temporarily gave to the user domainMOSS sysadmin rights in the SQL server on the SQL machine to avoid errors with creating databases while configuring SharePoint from the Admin Portal.
From the Admin Portal configured
Office SharePoint Server Search with domainmoss-services account
Shared Services Administration €“ New SSP created with 2 separate web apps for SSP and MySites, both app pools run as domainmoss-services and SSP itself runs as domainmoss-services
Windows SharePoint Services Search configured, Service Account - domainmoss-services, Content Access Account - domainmoss-services

Everything went OK.

Now came back to the machine SQL:
run Reporting Services Configuration and:
Report Server Virtual Directory €“ created new, called it ReportServer. When hit Apply, the applicatin suddenly quit, but I checked €“ the Virtual Directory was registered on the IIS and working.
Checked if Windows service identity is domainsqlservices, OK.
Web service identity: Application Pool: New
Name: ReportServer
Windows Account: domainsqlservices
Apply, everything went fine.

Database setup: choose server SQL, Connect
Database name: New name: ReportServer,
checked Create the report server database in SharePoint Integrated Mode
OK
Credeantials Type - Service credentials (I guess it means previously set domainsqlservices will be used)
Apply,OK, everything went fine.

Launch SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard, Connect to an existing farm, Database server: SQL, Retrieve datbase names: selected SharePoint_Config, Username: domainMOSS, Next, everything fine here.

Now as far as I understand I need to give reporting services an access to SharePoint databases? Went to the machine MOSS, launched SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration:

Application Management-> Reporting Services-> Manage integration settings, URL: http://SQL/reportserver, Windows Authentification, OK
then back, Grant database access-> Server Name: SQL, OK, now it is asking for credentials. And now the problem: no matter what I enter (domainsqlservices, domainMOSS) I get a message: €žA connection to the computer cannot be established€?. Why, why, why?
I can ping the server, SharePoint services are running fine and they are using the SQL server on the SQL machine and there are no errors in the event viewer (they should be if there were any problems to connect the SQL databases).
If I enter wrong credentials, I receive "Unable to log on with the given username and password.", so I guess there IS a connection to the computer (or how else could SharePoint determne that login is wrong?).

Also, if I open http://SQL/reportserver, I get €žThe report server has encountered a configuration error€? and the log in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2Reporting ServicesLogFiles says €žSharePoint content service is null. Report Server may not have joined the SharePoint farm, or Report Server service account may not have been granted access to farm.€? I guess it is OK while I have not granted access to the SharePoint databases?
Please, show me, what did I do so wrong that €žA connection to the computer cannot be established€?? How can I grant the access and finalize configuring Reporting Services?
Thanks.

Issue Doing Integrated Services Programming Using Microsoft.SqlServer.ManagedDTS.dll

May 23, 2007

Hi,

I am writing an installer code in C# to deploy the SSIS package.

I want to use Microsoft.SqlServer.ManagedDTS.dll for it.

It is mentioned in few articles available online that Microsoft.SqlServer.ManagedDTS.dll ships with SQL Server 2005.

I searched on our database server but could not get it.

Anyone having idea on this please help.

HTTP: 401 Unauthorized When Trying To Use Reporting Services And MOSS2007 In Integrated Mode

Feb 28, 2007

Sorry for the long post, but I'm trying to include as much info as possible.

I'm having trouble getting SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services and MOSS 2007 working together in integrated mode. Everything seems to be ok, but we get a 'HTTP 401 Unauthorized' error when using the 'Set server defaults' link from MOSS 2007 Central Administration. None of the other links give this error, but I'm not sure whether MOSS just eats the error message...

Here's the background:
Sql Server 2005 is installed on a separate box, let's call it SERVER1. This Sql Server hosts both the MOSS content database as well as the reporting services database.MOSS 2007 is installed on a different box, let's call it SERVER2I've installed all the required components for both boxes with no installation errorsSSRS seems to be running fine on SERVER1. Report Manager can be used directly with a browser in native mode.SSRS also *seems* to be running fine in Integrated mode, i.e. I can create a reporting database for integrated mode:
The url http://host/ReportService/ReportService2006.asmx responds normally when I access it through browser using my domain credentialsThe url http://host/Reports/ returns a message saying that I can't access it in integrated mode, which, I take, is normal
MOSS is running ok on SERVER2
I can see that SERVER1 is in the same farm after I've installed WSS3.0 on SERVER1Also I can see the "Reporting Services" section in Central Administration
So all in all, everything seems to be ok. However, when I try to use the 'Set server defaults' link from MOSS Central Administration I get an 'HTTP 401 Unauthorized' error. I'm assuming clicking this link will result in MOSS calling the Reporting Services' SOAP endpoint ReportService2006.asmx which now seems to be the culprit. Here's why I think so:

Whenever this occurs, the IIS logs on SERVER2 show that someone from SERVER1 is indeed trying to connect to ReportService2006.asmx, but I'm not seeing any user credentials being passed (whenever I access the asmx through my web browser, the credentials I entered in the browser are recorded in the log). Furthermore, the Event Viewer on SERVER2 shows Audit Failure (code 529) events occurring every time I get the HTTP 401 error.

The Event viewer's message is as follows:

Logon Failure: Reason: Unknown user name or bad password User Name: Domain: Logon Type: 3 Logon Process: Kerberos Authentication Package: Kerberos Workstation Name: - Caller User Name: - Caller Domain: - Caller Logon ID: - Caller Process ID: - Transited Services: - Source Network Address: <SERVER1 IP> Source Port: <PORT>
From the Event Viewer message and the IIS log it would seem like my MOSS is trying anonymous access whenever it tries to access the SSRS SOAP endpoint, which of course results in a 401, since anonymous access is not allowed. Please note that if I enable anonymous access in the Reporting Services' virtual directories (just for testing), I get a different error. This indicates that the HTTP 401 indeed originates from this particular web service call.

I've heard that SPS2003 and Reporting Services don't like each other on the same box, but this is hearsay. Does anyone know if this is a confirmed fact? This box does have SPS2003 and SSRS2005 installed. I tried to uninstall the SPS2003 but that didn't help anymore.

I noticed someone having similar issues in another thread, but I
didn't see resolutions. I'm pretty baffled as to whether
this is a problem with the MOSS Add-in or the Reporting Services
installation.

Any input on this issue is very much appreciated. I'll try to also include a follow-up if we're able to get this working ourselves.

Data Access :: Connecting To Server Using SSMS - Login Failed For User

Mar 21, 2014

I have a windows 2008 with SQL Server 2008 R2 VM on Azure. I am trying to connect to the SQL server for the first time using SSMS, but have not been able it. I have a VPN tunnel, so I am connecting using Windows authentication. The error I get back from SSMS is:

Login failed for user 'domainusername'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456).In the event viewer I see this error message: Login failed for user 'domainusername'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]

I have done the following:

- created an endpoint for port 1433
- opened port 1433 in the firewall
- Ran the MSSQLSERVER service as the build-in users Network Services, Local System, and Local Service, and as a local and domain administrator, with the same exact result each time.
- I get the same result trying to connect locally or remotely.
- I get the same result trying to connect using sqlcmd.
