Using DropDownList And TextBox To Filter Results...

Aug 5, 2006

Hey all,

I've been searching for a while and haven't really found an answer for what I'm trying to do. Here it all is and someone can tell me if I'm going in the wrong direction to solve this.

I have a textbox set to a parameter of "SearchString" and a DropDownList with the SelectedValue paramter of "FilterValue". The parameters work, I've tested that. So here is the problem.

I am trying to use the "FilterValue" to pick the field that the "SearchString" searches with a  LIKE statement (e.g. SELECT * FROM dbo.Units WHERE (@FilterValue LIKE '%'+@SearchString+'%'))

This, I've found out, doesn't work. I have this setup with a DataLayer.vb in my App_Code directory handling the SQL calls, while the normal CodeBehind is in the typical "Default.vb" page.

I will post code later as I don't have access to it right now, but if anyone can explain how a filter like this would work I would appreciate it!

Thanks,

-Matthew

Need To Display Results Of A Query, Then Use A Drop Down List To Filter The Results.

Feb 12, 2008

Hello. I currently have a website that has a table on one webpage. When a record is clicked, the primary key of that record is transfered in the query string to another page and fed into an sql statement. In this case its selecting a project on the first page, and displaying all the scripts for that project on another page. I also have an additional dropdownlist on the second page that i use to filter the scripts by an attribute called 'testdomain'. At present this works to an extent. When i click a project, i am navigated to the scripts page which is empty except for the dropdownlist. i then select a 'testdomain' from the dropdownlist and the page populates with scripts (formview) for the particular test domain. what i would like is for all the scripts to be displayed using the formview in the first instance when the user arrives at the second page. from there, they can then filter the scripts using the dropdownlist.
My current SQL statement is as follows.
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [TestScript] WHERE (([ProjectID] = @ProjectID) AND ([TestDomain] = @TestDomain))"
So what is happening is when testdomain = a null value, it does not select any scripts. Is there a way i can achieve the behaivour of the page as i outlined above? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
James.

Filter DB Using A Stored Proc And Textbox Value

Mar 14, 2006

I'm creating a search tool that a users can type their search criteria into a textbox and retrieve records that relate to the textbox values. I don't want it to search on the whole phrase, just individual words. So, I used the Split() method to split up the textbox.text and then I use that array to fill my stored proc with a search criteria. The problem is that it does it one word at a time. So if the user types 3 words in the textbox, it will open and close the stored proc 3 times. It works, but I know it's not the greatest way to do it and I was wondering if there is a better way to do it. There has to be a way to split up the textbox value inside the stored proc so I don't have to open the stored proc n number of times. Any ideas?

Parent/Child Rows In Report, Nested Table, Textbox Value In Filter Condition

Mar 26, 2008

Hi All,

I am working on SQL server 2005 Reports.
I have one report, one dataset is assigned to it, and one table which displays it.
Now I come accros requirement that, the column value in the filter condition for the table is present in one textbox.

I can not use textbox i.e. reportItems in filter condition. Can someone suggest me how to use textbox value in filters?

I want to display parent/child records on report. I am not getting the proper solution.

The data is like this:

Sequence ItemCode IsParent

1 XYZ 0 'do not have child record

2 PQR 1 'have child records with sequence no 3

3 ASD 0

3 AFDGE 0

3 VDC 0

4 ASR 1 'have child records with sequence no 5
5 ASR 0

If IsParent = 1, that record has child records with sequence = parent sequenece + 1

I think u can understand the data I need to bind, and it is like:

XYZ

+ PQR

ASD

AFDGE

VDC

ASR

On + click we can do show/hide of child records.

I m not getting how to achive this in SQL server report. Can u give some hint?

Thanks in advance
Pravin

Compare Results From SQL To Textbox?

Dec 16, 2003

I am trying to make a user authentication system which pulls data from a SQL table (that has columns "UserID" and "PIN" in it).

How can I check to see what the user entered into the "UserID" and "PIN" textbox's on the page and compare those entries to the database to see if they match up? I have been able to make the below code to do the query itself, but I don't know how to check back and see if it actually returned a match or not.

Function CheckLogin(ByVal userID As String, ByVal pIN As String) As System.Data.DataSet
Dim connectionString As String = "server='(local)'; trusted_connection=true; database='test'"
Dim dbConnection As System.Data.IDbConnection = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connectionString)

Dim queryString As String = "SELECT [UserAuth].[UserID], [UserAuth].[PIN] FROM [UserAuth] WHERE (([UserAuth].["& _
"UserID] like @UserID) AND ([UserAuth].[PIN] like @PIN))"
Dim dbCommand As System.Data.IDbCommand = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand
dbCommand.CommandText = queryString
dbCommand.Connection = dbConnection

Dim dbParam_userID As System.Data.IDataParameter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter
dbParam_userID.ParameterName = "@UserID"
dbParam_userID.Value = userID
dbParam_userID.DbType = System.Data.DbType.String
dbCommand.Parameters.Add(dbParam_userID)
Dim dbParam_pIN As System.Data.IDataParameter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter
dbParam_pIN.ParameterName = "@PIN"
dbParam_pIN.Value = pIN
dbParam_pIN.DbType = System.Data.DbType.String
dbCommand.Parameters.Add(dbParam_pIN)

Dim dataAdapter As System.Data.IDbDataAdapter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter
dataAdapter.SelectCommand = dbCommand
Dim dataSet As System.Data.DataSet = New System.Data.DataSet
dataAdapter.Fill(blah)

Return dataSet
End Function

Can You Filter SELECT Results?

Jul 23, 2005

I want to create a stored procedure that returns a list of records froma table. But depending on a userID value given only certain recordswill be returned that they have access to.I think this might be hard to do in a single SELECT statement becausethe user might also belong to a group that might have permission, etc.Can you do something like this pseudo code in a T-SQL procedure?DECLARE cur CURSOR FOR SELECT * FROM myTableOPEN curFETCH NEXT FROM curWHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0BEGINif( accessGranted(curRecord.id) ){ addRecordToResultSet() }else { ommitRecordFromResultSet() }END

Filter Query Results

Nov 22, 2007

Hi,

I have an interface that allows the user to filter the data to be returned.

e.g. if the user selects @SeniorManager then the query should return all data related to this.

So if the user selects @SeniorManager and @Auditor then the query should return all data matching both @SeniorManager AND @Auditor.

FundID and ClientID are the ID's that link each table.

Am I correct in using UNION ALL below?? thanks.

Code Block
SELECT SeniorMgr, null AS Auditor, null AS Legal
FROM FundClient f
INNER JOIN FundPortfolio p
ON p.ClientID = f.ClientID
INNER JOIN Staff s
ON (s.ClientID = p.ClientID) AND (s.FundID = p.PortfolioID) AND (s.ClientID = f.ClientID)
WHERE s.ClientID = @ClientID AND s.FundID = @FundID
AND (@SeniorManager = null Or SeniorMgr = @SeniorManager)
UNION ALL

SELECT null AS SeniorMgr, fa.Auditor, null AS Legal
FROM FundClient f
INNER JOIN FundPortfolio p
ON p.ClientID = f.ClientID
INNER JOIN (Auditor a
INNER JOIN FundAuditor fa
ON fa.AuditorID = a.Auditor)
ON (a.ClientID = p.ClientID) AND (a.FundID = p.PortfolioID) AND (a.ClientID = f.ClientID)
WHERE a.Auditor = @Auditor
AND a.ClientID = @ClientID AND a.FundID = @FundID

UNION ALL

SELECT null AS SeniorMgr, null AS Auditor, fl.Legal
FROM FundClient f
INNER JOIN FundPortfolio p
ON p.ClientID = f.ClientID
INNER JOIN (Legal l
INNER JOIN LegalCounsel fl
ON fl.LegalID = l.Legal)
ON (l.ClientID = p.ClientID) AND (l.FundID = p.PortfolioID) AND (l.ClientID = f.ClientID)
WHERE l.LegalC = @Legal
AND l.ClientID = @ClientID AND l.FundID = @FundID

Filter Double Results From Query

Nov 14, 2007

We are working on an application which aggregates news articles from various sources. The problem is, when querying the database, is that there are a lot of double results because some of the sources get their news from the same press agency. To clarify things a bit here's a link to an example:
http://84.244.146.27/Zoekresultaten.aspx?SearchQuery=Amsterdam
As you can see, there are a lot of the same results. What we want is to filter out the double results irrespective of the source. In other words; when the query encounters the first result, display that and leave out the other same results.
I've tried filtering them out by using DISTINCT on the 'news header' / results, but that does not seem to work. Any ideas on how to get this done?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Getting Results With Stored Procedure From Single Textbox Searching Table With Multi Columns

Feb 12, 2007

I admit I am a novice to queries and stored procedures but understand stored procedures are more secure, so I am choosing to challenge myself with a stored procedure and have not been successful at all.

What I am looking for is a stored procedure which would query the single table named Hospital, which would search from a single textbox the end user would enter the text they are searching for on a Windows VB application but is dependant on a few end user selected items.

1. The end user can select a radio button either "Starts with" or "Contains"
2. The end user can select from 6 checkboxes (Hospitals, Address, City, State, Zip, Type) to limit or expand their search from the columns in the table.

The table has 17columns (CO, PARENTCO, ADDR, POBox, CITY, State, ZIP, TEL, FAX, WEBSITE, HOSP_TYPE, OWNERSHIP, BEDS, CONTACT, TITLE, Email) but I am only allowing the end user to search by the above 6 columns and need to display the above 6 columns plus the phone, fax and website columns.

After the user clicks the search button it displays the results in a listbox and the user will then select the one they want and it displays the information in another set of textboxes.

Hopefully someone can get me pointed in the right direction! Thanks for your help!

SQL Server 2012 :: List Of Order Numbers Based On Stock Availability - Filter Results?

Dec 23, 2014

Trying to build a list of order numbers based on stock availability.

The data looks something like this:

OrderNumber Stockcode quantityordered quantityinstock
123 code1 10 5
123 code2 5 10
124 code3 15 20
124 code4 10 10

In this case I would like to output a single result for each order, but based on stock availability order 123 is not a complete order and 124 is so the results will need to reflect this.

Automatic Select Filter (something Like Global Table Filter)

Apr 15, 2008

Hello,

Here is my problem:

I use SQL Server 2005. I have approx. 50 tables in my database and 30 of them have a filed named "CompanyID". Example:
create table A (ID int identity, NAME varchar(100), COMPANYID int)create table A (ID int identity, REF_ID int, FIELD1 varchar(100), FIELD2 varchar(100), COMPANYID int)

Also there are nearly 200 stored procedures that read data from these tables. Example:
create procedure ABCasbegin /* some checks and expressions here ... */ select ... from A inner join B on (A.ID = B.REF_ID) where ... /* ... */end;

All my queries in the Stored procedure does not filter the tables by CompanyID, so they process the entire data.

However, now we have a requirement to separate the data for each company. That means that we have to put a filter by CompanyID to each of those 20 tables in each query where the tables appear.

Firstly, I put the CompanyID in the context so now its value is accessible through the context_info() function. Thus I do not need now to pass it as a parameter to the stored procedures.

However, I don't know what is the easiest and fastest way to filter the tables. Example:

I modified the above mentioned procedure in the following way:
create procedure ABCasbegin /* some checks and expressions here ... */
-- gets the CompanyID from the context: DECLARE @CompanyID int; SELECT @CompanyID = CONVERT(float, CONVERT(varchar(128), context_info()))
select ... from A inner join B on (A.ID = B.REF_ID) where ...
and A.COMPANYID = @CompanyID and B.COMPANYID = @CompanyID /* ... */end;

Now I have the desired filter by CompanyID. However, modifying over 200 stored procedures is rather tedious work and I don't think that this is the best approach. Is there any functionality in SQL Server that can provide the possibility to put an automatic filter to the tables.
For example: when I wrote "SELECT * FROM A", the actual statements to be executed would be "SELECT * FROM A WHERE CompanyID = CONVERT(float, CONVERT(varchar(128), context_info()))".

I was looking for something like "INSTEAD OF SELECT" triggers but I didn't manage to find any answer.

I would very grateful is someone suggests a solution for something like "global table filter" (that will help me make an easy refactoring)?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Beroetz

And/or Filter Field Not Enabled In The Group Filter Tab

Jan 26, 2006

Howdy,

I have a table that has a group. In this group, I want to filter by 2 different expressions, concatenated with an OR. BUT I can't change the "And/Or" column value for the first entry because it is grayed out. The column will automatically change to an OR value if both my expression column fields are the same (which I don€™t want) but if I put any other value in to the expression field of the second row, the "And/Or" field of the first row automatically changes to an AND.

PLEASE! How do I get the And/Or field "ungrayed" so I can change it to what I want?

The 2 filters I and using check the UserID = to the user, and the other is checking a count to get the Top N 1. (So just showing the current user and the top producer)

Reference Textbox In Other Textbox

Sep 12, 2007

Hi!
I dont know if i will explain this correctly, but my problem is with reporting service.
I'm supposed to Sum value in one textbox and than that sum use it in sum in other textbox.

Something like this:
Sum(Fields!Abc.Value/(Fields!dfg.Value+Sum(Fields!abc.Value)),"matrix1_RowGroup1")*100
I get error msg 'The Value expression for the textbox 'textbox49' contains an aggregate function (or RunningValue or RowNumber functions) in the argument to another aggregate function (or RunningValue). Aggregate functions cannot be nested inside other aggregate functions.'

Something like this wont work either Sum(Fields!abc.Value/ReportItems("textbox56").Value)*100
Error The Value expression for the textbox 'textbox55' uses an aggregate function on a report item. Aggregate functions can be used only on report items contained in page headers and footers.

So, pls help if you know how to reference textbox in other in body of report.
Thx.

Gridview And DropDownList

Oct 18, 2006

Hello:I have add a DropDownList to my GridView and binded the dropdownlist to a field from a select statement in the SQLDataSource. I have EnabledEditing for my GridView. The GridView is populated with information from the select statement. Some of the information returned from the select statement is null. The field where the dropdownlist is binded it is null in some cases and does not have a value that is in the dropdownlist so I get and error when I attempt to do an update. 'DropDownList1' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.Parameter name: value Is there a way to get around this besides initializing all the columns in the table that are going to be binded to a dropdownlist to a value in the dropdownlist?

Can You Use Substring In ASP.NET On A DropDownList ?

Oct 26, 2007

I'm using the GridView to display some accounting infromation. I have a project where I have a 14 character control number. I would like to have a dropdown list to select the account classification of records to be displayed. The accounting classification is the first two characters of the control number.  So the dropdown list needs to show unique first two characters and the GridView will be filtered on these two characters.  I have been trying to use "substring" in the ASP.NET code; not even sure you can.
Any suggestions on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.  See code below:
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList1" runat="server" AutoPostBack="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource2"
DataTextField="control_num" DataValueField="control_num">
</asp:DropDownList><asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource2" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:GPCRReportsConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT DISTINCT [substring(control_num,1,2)] FROM [Request]"></asp:SqlDataSource>
ERROR: Invalid column name 'substring(control_num,1,2)'.

"INSERT INTO tblsomething (number) VALUES (strnumber)"
myCommand = New SqlCommand(strSQL, conUsers)myCommand.Transaction = objUsersmyCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()objUsers.Commit()conUsers.Close()

Populating Dropdownlist

Mar 23, 2006

I've got the following code and it's not really what I want. With the below code I can select in a dropdownlist a value and in the other dropdownlist the correspondending value will be selected. But when I select a value the second dropdownlist won't be filled with all the data in the database. It is filled only with the correspondending value and not with the rest of the value. When someone changes his mind and want to select a value in the dropdownlist it can't be done. Any ideas??Default.aspx:<body>    <form id="form1" runat="server">    <div>        <asp:Label            ID="Label1"            runat="server"            Text="Botanische Naam: ">        </asp:Label>        <asp:DropDownList            ID="DDL1"            AutoPostBack="True"            runat="server"            OnSelectedIndexChanged="ChangeBotanicName"            DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1"            DataTextField="Botanische_Naam"            DataValueField="Botanische_Naam">        </asp:DropDownList>        <asp:SqlDataSource            ID="SqlDataSource1"            runat="server"            ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:BonsaiDataBaseConnectionString %>"            SelectCommand="SELECT [Botanische Naam] AS Botanische_Naam FROM [BonsaiSoorten]">        </asp:SqlDataSource>        <asp:sqldatasource           id="SqlDataSource2"           runat="server"           connectionstring="<%$ ConnectionStrings:BonsaiDataBaseConnectionString%>"           selectcommand="SELECT [Nederlandse Naam] AS Nederlandse_Naam FROM [BonsaiSoorten]WHERE [Botanische Naam] = @Title1">          <selectparameters>              <asp:controlparameter              name="Title1"              controlid="DDL1"              propertyname="SelectedValue"              />          </selectparameters>        </asp:sqldatasource>         <asp:Label            ID="Label2"            runat="server">Nederlandse Naam:</asp:Label>                <asp:DropDownList            ID="DDL2"            AutoPostBack="True"            runat="server"            OnSelectedIndexChanged="ChangeDutchName"            DataSourceID="SqlDataSource3"            DataTextField="Nederlandse_Naam"            DataValueField="Nederlandse_Naam">        </asp:DropDownList>        <asp:SqlDataSource            ID="SqlDataSource3"            runat="server"            ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:BonsaiDataBaseConnectionString %>"            SelectCommand="SELECT [Nederlandse Naam] AS Nederlandse_Naam FROM [BonsaiSoorten]">        </asp:SqlDataSource>        <asp:sqldatasource           id="SqlDataSource4"           runat="server"           connectionstring="<%$ ConnectionStrings:BonsaiDataBaseConnectionString%>"           selectcommand="SELECT [Botanische Naam] AS Botanische_Naam FROM [BonsaiSoorten]WHERE [Nederlandse Naam] = @Title2">          <selectparameters>              <asp:controlparameter              name="Title2"              controlid="DDL2"              propertyname="SelectedValue"              />          </selectparameters>        </asp:sqldatasource>     </div>    </form></body>Default.aspx.vb:Partial Class _Default    Inherits System.Web.UI.Page    Sub ChangeBotanicName(ByVal Sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)        DDL2.DataSourceID = "SqlDataSource2"    End Sub    Sub ChangeDutchName(ByVal Sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)        DDL1.DataSourceID = "SqlDataSource4"    End SubEnd Class

Handle Null Value For DropDownList?

Nov 11, 2006

Using asp.net 2.0 and visual studio 2005. The question is regarding the following ER diagram: I've made Firstname, lastname, buildingID and RoomNum all required fields. I've got a modified GridView that displays all of the table Faculty columns.  It's been modified so the BuildingID and DepID are resolved to their actual field names and displayed in a DropDownList.  In the dropdown list I used for inserting (a seperate DetailsView control), I manually inserted an item into the Department dropdownlist which had the text "-- Select a Department --" with a value of -1.  MS SQL didn't like that -1 value so I wrote the following code to fix it:  protected void dsFaculty_Inserting(object sender, SqlDataSourceCommandEventArgs e)
{
if (e.Command.Parameters["@DeptID"].Value.ToString() == "-1")
{
e.Command.Parameters["@DeptID"].Value = null;
}
} That means of course DeptID is null, which is ok.  The problem arises is when I try to edit that row in the GridView.  I get the an error 'ddlDepartment' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.Parameter name: valueIdeally, I'd like to make the dropdown list in the GridView show "-- None --" for the DeptID if it comes across a null value.  I already tried playing around with the Command.Parameters in the dsFaculty_Selected function, but it didn't work.  Ideas?

Clarification For 'WHERE' Statement In A Dropdownlist

Feb 12, 2008

My goal is to populate a dropdownlist with only with users that are "Techs".  I am using the membership database that you ccan set up through VWD.  I added this column to the aspnet_Users table: IsTech as bit datatype. I thought I had the right SQL statement but apparently not, because I get an Invalid column name 'True'.Here is my statement: <asp:SqlDataSource                                     ID="SqlDataSource3"                                     runat="server"                                     ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:HRIServiceConnectionString1 %>"                                                                    SelectCommand="SELECT [UserID], [FirstName]+ ' ' + [LastName] AS techid FROM [aspnet_Users] WHERE [isTech] = True ORDER BY [LastName], [FirstName]">                                </asp:SqlDataSource>

DropDownList Inside CreateUserWizard

Mar 25, 2006

I am using the createuserwizard, and have set up my own profile table which hold first name, last etc. In my CreateUserWizard, the field for Vendor is a dropdownlist that is to be populated from a list in a database. I set up the form without the createuserwizard, and everything went skippy, but when I placed it into the wizard, I now cannot access the control of the dropdownlist.
I have tried doing..
Using SqlConnection As New SqlConnection(WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("Personal").ConnectionString)Dim VendorID As DropDownListVendorID = CType(CreateUserWizard1.FindControl("VendorName"), DropDownList)
Dim MyReader As SqlDataReaderDim sel As String = String.Format("SELECT VendorID, Name FROM Vendors")Dim MyCommand As SqlCommandMyCommand = New SqlCommandMyCommand.CommandText = selMyCommand.CommandType = CommandType.TextMyCommand.Connection = SqlConnectionMyCommand.Connection.Open()MyReader = MyCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)But when I go to databind, it says:Object reference not set to an instance of an object. VendorID.DataSource = MyReaderLine 30:             VendorID.DataValueField = "VendorID"Line 31:             VendorID.DataTextField = "Name"

Dropdownlist Database Search

Mar 19, 2008

Hi all.

I have a huge problem that ive been sitting with for awhile.

I have a web page with 4 dropdownlist boxes on it

Gender:
Race:
Field:
Location:

Now a user can search a SQL db from selecting values from these 4 dropdownlist boxes which are equal to values in the db obviously.

when they have done that and pressed submit a Gridview is populated with the people corresponding details and the user is able to view each row seperately.

Now the problem i am having is that when i havent used all 4 selections for eg

Gender: null (no value selected)
Race: Black
Field: Accounting
Location: Los Angeles

then no information is returned from the db in the gridview.
im using a sqldatasource to populate the gridview and here is the query string that i am using :

Code:

sql
SELECT [title], [gender], [initials], [name], [surname], [birthdate], [postaladdress], [suburb], [city], [zipcode], [criminalrecord], [drivers], [maritalstatus], [dependants], [citizenship], [province], [contactref], [hometel], [cell], [jobtitle], [relocate], [emmigrate], [email], [worktel], [enddate], [startdate], [FIELD], [education], [company], [positionheld], [jobdescription], [contactperson], [contacttel], [startdate2], [contactperson3], [jobdescription3], [positionheld3], [company3], [enddate3], [startdate3], [contacttel3], [other] FROM [cvinformation] WHERE (([race] = CASE WHEN @race IS NOT NULL THEN @race ELSE [race] END) AND ([province] = CASE WHEN @province IS NOT NULL THEN @province ELSE [province] END) AND ([education] = CASE WHEN @education IS NOT NULL THEN @education ELSE [education] END))

what i want to do is whether the user doesnt choose any selection and leaves the choice null that ALL the information in the table of the db be shown and even if they only choose 2 values and leave the others null then it still brings back the information from the criteria chosen..

Is this possible.?
