I am new to stored procedures and T-SQL so please stick with me. I have a table that holds information about companies. I am trying to write a stored procedure that when run will query that table and find out if there are more than one entry of that company. All company names in that table must be unique (they can only occur once), if they occur more than once I need to flag it for reporting.
So what is the best way to go about this? Essentially what i was thinking was doing a select * on the table and then going from the first entry to the last and at each entry running a select * from table where companyname = @nameofcompany. @nameofcompany would be the name for that entry. If the select statement revealed more than one entry then i would know there was a problem.
Like I said I am new and this is probably very simple but i need a little help getting started
thanks

Hey all - VERY new to SQL so I apologize if I butcher normally trivial things :)
Looking to run a query that will retrieve the number of results returned from a select statement...
Currently have a LicenseID table with a Software column...the statement that works on it's own that i've got is:
SELECT * FROM Software WHERE LicensesID = 2
Currently when I run that with the data so far I get 4 results returned to me...how can I add to that statement so that instead of displaying the results themselves, I just get the number 4 returned as a total number of results?
Thanks all!

I have a table with three columns. Name, book#, category.
I need to write a select statement that looks at the book# and category and returns all the names that match that into one joined our combined result. So if my name column had john, Jane, Jim, jack, and Steph in unique rows that matched it would bring back a resulted formatted as. John, Jane, Jim, jack, Steph. So I could place that in a field for reference.

I am trying to format the Sys field (which is Int) in case the first byte is zero. But I'm getting an error msg;
Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Procedure sp_Pull_Cancels, Line 43
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'Right'.
CASE
WHEN substring(PCRACT, 5, 1) = '4' THEN 3641
WHEN substring(PCRACT, 5, 1) = '5' THEN 2012
WHEN substring(PCRACT, 5, 1) = '6' THEN 9694
END as Right('0000' + Cast(Sys as varchar (4)),4)
Any ideas how I construct this CASE statement to get the desired results.
Thanx,

Hi,
I have three tables:
1 Order Details
2 Product Info
3 Received Qty
The query is pretty simple however I'm getting incorrect results.
The query grabs a load of information (including a SUM statement) from the order details tbl.. this is INNER JOIN ed to the products tbl to match an ID field which grabs some extra info from the product info tbl.
all fairly straightforward and works without a problem..
However I now need to add in the received qty tbl (as the name suggests this keep a track of the qty's of items received)
I need to join this tbl to the order details tbl based on a unique ID from the orders tbl and then SUM together all of the entries in that received qty tbl for that item.
Result is I get a single record which shows the qty ordered (from the order details tbl), and the total received (from the received qty) tbl
These are held in a seperate tbl as an order can be deliveryed in several stages.
Here is my statement:
SELECT PDS_Login.Supplier_Products.ProductName, PDS_Login.Supplier_Products.ProductCode, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.POID,
dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PODetailsID, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.Qty, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PricePerItem,
dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PoDetailsStatus, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PoDateExpected, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PODateReceived,
SUM(dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.Qty * dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PricePerItem) AS LineTotal, SUM(dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details_Received.Qty)
AS QtyReceived
FROM dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details INNER JOIN
PDS_Login.Supplier_Products ON dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.ProductID = PDS_Login.Supplier_Products.ProductID LEFT OUTER JOIN
dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details_Received ON dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PODetailsID = dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details_Received.PODetailsID
WHERE (dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.POID = @POID)
GROUP BY dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details_Received.Qty, PDS_Login.Supplier_Products.ProductName, PDS_Login.Supplier_Products.ProductCode,
dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.POID, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PODetailsID, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.Qty, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PricePerItem,
dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PoDetailsStatus, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PoDateExpected, dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details.PODateReceived,
dbo.Suppliers_POs_Details_Received.Qty
The problem is, if there is more than one relating record in teh Received Qty tbl instead of that being added together as I want, two results appear...
It's obviously something simple but I can't seem to figure it out - anyone point me in the right direction?

I have the following SELECT statement attached to a dropdown box:
SELECT [Workshop] FROM [Workshops] WHERE Workshop <> (SELECT Workshop FROM Workshop_Registration WHERE FullName = @FullName AND Completed = @Completed) ORDER BY [Workshop]
I am trying to get all workshops (50 or more) from the WORKSHOPS table that the logged in user is not already registered for. This works perfectly as long as the student is registered for at least 1 class. It populates the dropdown with all of the other classes. If they aren't registered for a class then it doesn't list any classes. The problem is definitely the subquery, but how do I make it to where if the subquery doesn't return any results (student not registered for anything), I get all of the workshops in the dropdown? Any help is appreciated!

I have a query that pulls a list of organizations. I'm trying to use a CASE statement to add a column of names based on the relationship of the individual to that organization. It is possible for two people at the organization to both have that relationship to the organization. Currently, when I pull my results, I get all the individual's names for all the organizations, but I'm also getting a row where there is no name, something like:
Company1 ''
Company1 'Individual1'
Company1 'Individual2'
Some of the organizations, they have no one with the relationship, but for all the organizations that do have someone in the position I want to not see the blank row. My case statement is:
CASE WHEN EXISTS
(Select ind_customer.cst_key WHERE ixo_rlt_code = 'Relationship' )
THEN ind_customer.cst_ind_full_name_dn
ELSE ''
END
AS 'FULL NAME'

I need to insert data into a table based on the results returned by a select statement. Basically, the select statement below gives me a list of all the work orders created in the last hour.
select worknumber from worksorderhdr where date_created > DATEADD(HOUR, -1, GETDATE())
This might return anywhere between 5 and 50 records each time. What I then need to do is use each of the work numbers returned to create a record in the spec_checklist_remind table. The other details in the insert statement will be the same for each insert, it's just the worknumber from the select statement that needs to be added to the insert where the ?? are below:
INSERT INTO spec_checklist_remind (form, record_type, linked_to_worknumber, spec_checklist_id) values (5, 0, '??',52)"

Hi,
I have written a basic UPDATE statement to update two fields in one table using a where clause to identify the record i wish to update. i.e.
UPDATE TableName SET field1=1234, field2='' WHERE primary_key=N'1234';
When i run the statement, in the results window i get a value returned that is equal to the total number of records in that table!! i.e.
(No column name)
--------------------------
588061
but when i check the table, indeed only one record has been updated as expected (and i have confirmed this by using SELECT @@ROWCOUNT straight after)
My question is, why does it do this?? i paniced at first as i thought i had updated ALL rows, but luckily this seems not to be the case.
And can i turn this off??
Many thanks,
Martin

If it possible to have an if statement match multiple results, as to not have to use the OR multiple times.
Example: I want to say, if Description equals red or blue or green or yellow or orange or black or white or pink, without having to use OR and OR and OR. Description can match 10 different values.

I am using Remote Data service to Query an Sql Server Database using MDAC. The Os in which server is loaded in Window 2003 and the MDAC 2.8 version is installed. Now I create a table X with identity column. Then when I try to insert records in that table using Insert into X select * from Y statement. The statement gets executed by when i check the X table I find that the duplicate records are present with different identity no's.
Even when i truncate and retry the same thing occurs.
What could be the reason for the same??

The SQL computed is complex enough that I can't see a way to make it a parameterized query. The obvious approach seems to be to compute the SQL in a CONTROL FLOW SCRIPT TASK and then use it to load a variable to set the VARIABLE SOURCE of a CONTROL FLOW EXECUTE SQL TASK.
I see that I can return a resultset to a variable.
But getting the rows of the results into a dataflow is not obvious. I have heard mentione that a Derived Column can do this. I can see using a dummy SCRIPT COMPONENT as DATA SOURCE with nothing in it to then drop into DERIVED COLUMN. But when setting up DERIVED COLUMN I don't see how to pull the columns out of the RESULTSET variable.
If it makes a difference I think the columns of the resultset will always be the same in this scenario.
Maybe this is totally the wrong approach? Any clues would be appreciated.

I am fairly new with SQL and still learning. I have used a case statemtent for a column in my select list and want to use the results of that statement's field in my WHERE clause but it is not working for me. Here is the code I have so far:
SELECT
l.loanid,
p.investorid,
l.duedate,
case when pc.duedate >= l.duedate then pc.duedate end as RateDueDate,
pc.interestrate
FROM loan l
inner join participation p on p.loanid = l.loanid
inner join paymentchange pc on pc.loanid = l.loanid
where p.investorid = '12345' and RateDueDate is not null
order by l.loanid, pc.duedate
I want to put the results of this case statment in my where clause like highlighted above but it is not working because RateDueDate is not an actual column in the table. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I have a query that returns results based on information in several tables. The problem I am having is that is there are no records in the one table it doesn't return any information at all. This table may not have any information initially for the employees so I need to show results whether or not there is anything in this one table.
Here is my select statement:
SELECT employee.emp_id, DATEDIFF(mm, employee.emp_begin_accrual, GETDATE()) * employee.emp_accrual_rate -
(SELECT SUM(request_duration) AS daystaken
FROM request) AS daysleft, employee.emp_lname + ', ' + employee.emp_fname + ' ' + employee.emp_minitial + '.' AS emp_name,
department.department_name, location.location_name
FROM employee INNER JOIN
request AS request_1 ON employee.emp_id = request_1.emp_id INNER JOIN
department ON employee.emp_department = department.department_id INNER JOIN
location ON department.department_location = location.location_id
GROUP BY employee.emp_id, employee.emp_begin_accrual, employee.emp_accrual_rate, employee.emp_fname, employee.emp_minitial,
employee.emp_lname, department.department_name, location.location_name
ORDER BY location.location_name, department.department_name, employee.emp_lname
The section below is the part that may or may not contain information:
SELECT (SELECT SUM(request_duration) AS daystaken
FROM request) AS daysleft
So I need it to return results whether this sub query has results or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have a stored procedure on a SQL Server 2008 database. The stored procedure is very simple, just a SELECT statement. When I run it, it returns 422 rows. However, when I run the SELECT statement from the stored procedure, it returns 467 rows. I've tried this by running both the stored procedure and the SELECT statement in the same SSMS window at the same time, and the behavior is the same. The stored procedure is:
USE [REMS]
GO
/****** Object: StoredProcedure [mobile].[GetAllMobileDeviceUsers] Script Date: 12/04/2014 */
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
[Code] ....
When I do this in the same SSMS window:
exec mobile.GetAllMobileDeviceUsers
SELECT
ee.EmployeeID,
EmployeeName = LastName + ', ' + FirstName
FROM EmployeeInvData ee
--UNION
[Code] ....
I get two result sets. The first is 422 rows; the second is 467 rows. Why?

SQL Ver: 2008 (not r2)
Problem: The following code returns correct results when moving variable declarations and update statement outside a stored procedure, but fails to return a value other than zero for the "COMPANY TOTAL" records. The "DEPT TOTAL" result works fine both in and outside the sp.This may have to do with handling NULL values since I was getting warning message earlier involving a value being eliminated by an aggregate function involving a NULL. I only got this message when running inside the sp, not when running standalone. I wrapped the values inside the SUM functions with an ISNULL, and now return a zero rather than NULL for the "COMPANY TOTAL" records when running inside SP.All variable values are correct when running.
SQL CODE:
DECLARE
@WIPMonthCurrent date = (SELECT TOP 1 WIPMonth FROM budxcWIPMonths WHERE ActiveWIPPeriod = 'Y')
select @WIPMonthCurrent as WIPMonthCurrent

We are getting unexpected results from the following update statement when it is executed on SQL Server 2005.
The strange thing is that we get duplicated values for QM_UID (although when run under SQL Server 2000 we don't get duplicated values)
Can anyone explain why this happens or suggest another way of populating this column without using a cursor or adding a temporary autoincrement column and copying the values over?
declare @NextID int;
set @NextID = 1;
update tmp set QM_UID=@NextID, @NextID = @NextID + 1;

hi, like, if i need to do delete some items with the id = 10000 then also need to update on the remaining items on the with the same idthen i will need to go through all the records to fetch the items with the same id right? so, is there something that i can use to hold those records so that i can do the delete and update just on those records and don't need to query twice? or is there a way to do that in one go ?thanks in advance!

I have four tables: Customer (CustomerId INT, CountyId INT), County (CountyId INT), Search(SearchId INT), and SearchCriteria (SearchCriteriaId INT, SearchId INT, CountyId INT, [others not related to this]).
I want to search Customer based off of the Search record, which could have multiple SearchCriteria records. However, if there aren't any SearchCriteria records with CountyId populated for a given Search, I want it to assume to get all Customer records, regardless of CountyId.
Right now, I'm doing it this way.
DECLARE @SearchId INT = 100
SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE
CountyId IN
(
SELECT CASE WHEN EXISTS(SELECT CountyId FROM SearchCriteria WHERE SearchId = @SearchId)
THEN SearchCriteria.CountyId
[Code] .....
This works; it just seems cludgy. Is there a more elegant way to do this?

Hello. I currently have a website that has a table on one webpage. When a record is clicked, the primary key of that record is transfered in the query string to another page and fed into an sql statement. In this case its selecting a project on the first page, and displaying all the scripts for that project on another page. I also have an additional dropdownlist on the second page that i use to filter the scripts by an attribute called 'testdomain'. At present this works to an extent. When i click a project, i am navigated to the scripts page which is empty except for the dropdownlist. i then select a 'testdomain' from the dropdownlist and the page populates with scripts (formview) for the particular test domain. what i would like is for all the scripts to be displayed using the formview in the first instance when the user arrives at the second page. from there, they can then filter the scripts using the dropdownlist.
My current SQL statement is as follows.
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [TestScript] WHERE (([ProjectID] = @ProjectID) AND ([TestDomain] = @TestDomain))"
So what is happening is when testdomain = a null value, it does not select any scripts. Is there a way i can achieve the behaivour of the page as i outlined above? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
James.

Hi all, I have the following SQLDataSource statement which connects to my Gridview:<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSourceStandings" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT P.firstName, P.lastName, T.teamName, IsNull(P.gamesPlayed, 0) as gamesPlayed, IsNull(P.plateAppearances,0) as plateAppearances, IsNull( (P.plateAppearances - (P.sacrifices + P.walks)) ,0) as atbats, IsNull(P.hits,0) as hits, P.hits/(CONVERT(Decimal(5,2), IsNull(NullIF(P.atbats, 0), 1))) AS [average], (P.hits + P.walks)/(CONVERT(Decimal(5,2), IsNull(NullIF( (P.atbats + P.sacrifices + P.walks) , 0), 1))) AS [OBP], (P.hits - (P.doubles + P.triples + P.homeRuns) + (2 * P.doubles) + (3 * P.triples) + (4 * P.homeRuns)) / (CONVERT(Decimal(5,2), IsNull(NullIF(P.atbats, 0), 1))) AS [SLG], P.singles, P.doubles, P.triples, P.homeRuns, P.walks, P.sacrifices, P.runs, P.rbis FROM Players P INNER JOIN Teams T ON P.team = T.teamID ORDER BY P.firstName, P.lastName"></asp:SqlDataSource>There are 8 teams in the database, and somehow the average and obp results are as expected for all teams except where T.teamID = 1. This doesn't make sense to me at all! For example, I get the following results with this same query: First NameLast NameTeamGPPAABHAVGOBPSLG1B2B3BHRBBSACRRBI

Since AVG is simply H/AB, it doesn't make sense for Gabriel Helbig's results to be 1.00000. Can anyone shed ANY light on this please?Thank you in advance,Markuu ***As a side note, could anyone also let me know how I could format the output so that AVG and OBP are only 3 decimal places? (ex: 0.719 for the 1st result)***

Hi,
I have a web form that lets users search for people in my database they wish to contact. The database returns a paged set of results using a CTE, Top X, and Row_number().
I would like to give my users to option of removing individual people from this list but cannot find a way to do this.
I have tried creating a session variable with a comma delimited list of ID's that I pass to my sproc and use in a NOT IN() statement. But I keep getting a "Input string was not in a correct format." Error Message.
Is there any way to do this? I am still new to stored procedures so any advice would be helpful.
Thanks
