Using Single Apostrophe While Inserting Data

Mar 16, 1999

Dear fellows,

I want to insert the data in a field which contains apostrophe['] in it, but the insert command does not stores the test after apostrophe

e.g
Insert into test_tbl(id,name)
values (32,'This is a test of apostrophe's ...');

the above command does not store after first apostrophe.

Please suggest

---------------

That is only part of a large query that writs a SQL Query to a column in a Database. That Query (in the column) is just ran normally so I don't need to compile it each time I want to run it.

THe problem I have is @FieldName might be: ryan's field.

That apostrophe is killing me because the SQL keeps it as ryan's field, not ryan''s field(note the 2 apostrophes). I cannot do: REPLACE(@FieldName, ''', '''') because it's not closing the apostrophes. Is there an escape character that I can use to say only one: ' ?

I tried:

DECLARE @t VARCHAR(500)
SET @t = (SELECT [Name] FROM [Form].[Fields] WHERE FieldID = 1)
print @t -- @t will print: Ryan's Field
PRINT QUOTENAME('' + @t + '', '''')

but that gives me: 'Ryan''s Field'

Any help would rock. If I make any changes to the way this field is input into the DataBase, I know I will need to do a lot of re-work in many spots. WHich is why i'm trying to solve this on the SQL side.

Inserting Row With Single Quote

Oct 5, 2006

I'm inserting a row of people's names and addresses to a table. This seems to work great, unless the person has ' in their name, for example O' Riordan. When the address has single quote (such as Wilder's Path), I'd get the same error, unclosed quote when inserting the row.

What would be the best way to work around this, other than read the line and replace it with a space.

Inserting Multiple Rows With A Single INSERT INTO

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I have an application running on a wireless device and being wireless Iwant it to use bandwidth as efficiently as possible. Therefore, I wantthe SQL statement that it uploads to the SQL Server to be as efficientas possible. In one instance, I give it four records to upload, whichcurrently I have as four seperate SQL statements seperated by a ";".However, all the INSERT INTO... information is the same each time, theonly that changes is the VALUES portion of each command. Also, I haveto have the name of each column to receive the data (believe it or not, these columns are only a small subset of the columns in the table). Here is my current SQL statement:INSERT INTO tblInvTransLog ( intType, strScreen, strMachine, strUser, dteDate, intSteelRecID, intReleaseReceiptID, strReleaseNo, intQty,dblDiameter, strGrade, HeatID, strHeatNum, strHeatCode, lngfkCompanyID)VALUES (1, 'Raw Material Receiving', '[MachineNo]', '[CurrentUser]','3/21/2005', 888, 779, '2', 5, 0.016, '1018', 18, '610T142', 'K8',520);INSERT INTO tblInvTransLog ( intType, strScreen, strMachine, strUser, dteDate, intSteelRecID, intReleaseReceiptID, strReleaseNo, intQty,dblDiameter, strGrade, HeatID, strHeatNum, strHeatCode, lngfkCompanyID)VALUES (1, 'Raw Material Receiving', '[MachineNo]', '[CurrentUser]','3/21/2005', 888, 779, '2', 9, 0.016, '1018', 30, '14841', 'B9', 344);Since the SQL statement INSERT INTO portion remains the same everytime, it would be good if I could have the INSERT INTO portion onlyonce and then any number of VALUES sections, something like this:INSERT INTO tblInvTransLog (intType, strScreen, strMachine, strUser, dteDate, intSteelRecID, intReleaseReceiptID, strReleaseNo, intQty,dblDiameter, strGrade, HeatID, strHeatNum, strHeatCode, lngfkCompanyID)VALUES (1, 'Raw Material Receiving', '[MachineNo]','[CurrentUser]', '3/21/2005', 888, 779, '2', 5, 0.016, '1018', 18,'610T142', 'K8', 520)VALUES (1, 'Raw Material Receiving', '[MachineNo]','[CurrentUser]', '3/21/2005', 888, 779, '2', 9, 0.016, '1018', 30,'14841', 'B9', 344);But this is not a valid SQL statement. But perhaps someone with a morecomprehensive knowledge of SQL knows of way. Maybe there is a way tostore a string at the header of the command then use the string name ineach seperate command(??)

Newbie Q: Inserting Strings With Single Or Double Quotes

Sep 15, 1999

Hi: Got a newbie question that's been giving me fits! Basically I'm replicating what's going on here on this board...creating a "posting" interface that takes the "message" and inserts it into a table using an ADODB connection (using INSERT INTO table name, tablecells and VALUES)

However, if someone types in a single or double quote in the body of the message, I get an error similar to this:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14'

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 's'.

/test.asp, line 29

I think I understand why it's happening (SQL is interpreting the quote mark as a string-end), but what am I supposed to do to get around it?

SQL 2000: Inserting Multiple Rows Into A Single Table

Jul 20, 2005

To anyone that is able to help....What I am trying to do is this. I have two tables (Orders, andOrderDetails), and my question is on the order details. I would liketo set up a stored procedure that essentially inserts in the orderstable the mail order, and then insert multiple orderdetails within thesame transaction. I also need to do this via SQL 2000. Right now ihave "x" amount of variables for all columns in my orders tables, andall Columns in my Order Details table. I.e. @OColumn1, @OColumn2,@OColumn3, @ODColumn1, @ODColumn2, etc... I would like to create astored procedure to insert into Orders, and have that call anotherstored procedure to insert all the Order details associated with thatorder. The only way I can think of doing it is for the program to passme a string of data per column for order details, and parse the stringvia T-SQL. I would like to get away from the String format, and gowith something else. If possible I would like the application tosubmit a single value per variable multiple times. If I do it this waythough it will be running the entire SP again, and again. Anysuggestions on the best way to solve this would be greatlyappreciated. If anyone can come up with a better way feel free. Myonly requirement is that it be done in SQL.Thank you

Error Writing Data To Same Destination In Single Data Flow

May 12, 2006

I am getting the following error running a data flow that splits the input data into multiple streams and writes the results of each stream to the same destination table:

"This operation conflicts with another pending operation on this transaction. The operation failed."

The flow starts with a single source table with one row per student and multiple scores for that student. It does a few lookups and then splits the stream (using Multicast) in several layers, ultimately generating 25 destinations (one for each score to be recorded), all going to the same table (like a fact table). This all is running under a transaction at the package level, which is distributed to a separate machine.

Apparently, I cannot have all of these streams inserting data into the same table at one time. I don't understand why not. In an OLTP system, many transactions are inserting records into the same table at once. Why can't I do that within the same transaction?

I suppose I can use a UnionAll to join them back together before writing to a single destination, but that seems like an unnecessary waste and clutters the flow. Can anyone offer a different solution or a reason why this fails in the first place?

Thanks in advance.

Selecting A Single Data Source From Multiple Data Sources

Aug 4, 2006

Hi,

I am pretty new to SSIS. I am trying to create a package which can accept data in any of several formats. i.e. CSV, Excel, a SQL Server database/table and import the data into my destination database.

So far i've managed to get this working OK. However I am now TOTALLY stuck. I'm currently trying to just concentrate on the data sources being a CSV (using a Flat File Data Source) and/or an Excel Spreadsheet.

I can get the data in and to my destination using a UNION ALL component and mapping the data sources to it so long as both the CSV file and the Excel spreadsheet exist.

My problem is that I need my package to handle the possibility that only the CSV file might exist and there is no Excel spreadsheet. In which case i'd like the package to ignore the Excel datasource completely. Currently either of my data sources do not exist I get errors and the package terminates.

Is there any way in SSIS that I can check all my data sources to see which ones exist (i.e. are valid). If they exist I want to use them. If it doesn't exist i'd like to disgard it (without error - as long as there is a single datasource the package should run)

I've tried using the AcquireConnection method in a script task on each of my connections, hoping that it would error if the file/datasource did not exist. It doesn't though (in the case of an Excel datasource it just creates a empty excel file for me).

The only other option I can come up with are to have seperate packages depending on the type of data we want to import and then run a particular package depending on the format of the source data. This seems a bit long winded. I am pretty sure I must be able to do what I want to achieve but I can't work out how.

I'll be grateful to anyone who can send me any tips/hints/links on how I can achieve this.

Many thanks

Rob Gibson

Apostrophe Usage

Jun 14, 2004

Ok, I still have some uncertainty as to just exactly how this whole apostrophe thing works with databases. I understand that it is a reserved character and so when a sql query runs into one of these creatures it looks at it as something other than a normal character.

I am working primarily in vb/asp/sql server with a little bit of access. I am familiar with the instrinsic 'Replace' function and I use it but I still have occassional problems.

I would like any information I can get on just exactly why/how this thing works and how to work-around the apostrophe when writing to, reading from, and validating data from sql server/access/any databases.

Thanks!

Problem With Apostrophe

May 7, 2007

I am having weird trouble with READING data from my Access database where the field has an apostrophe - but only when I display the field in a textbox.

For example, the field "Don't do this" becomes "Don" when my SQL query outputs the result:

campaignID = rscampaign("campaign")
response.write "<input type='hidden' name='campaignid1' value='" & campaignID & "'>"

If I output to regular HTML (e.g. in a <P> tag), the field displays correcly.

Has anyone ever encountered this problem? I can't figure out why the textbox would be creating this problem...

SqlDataSource : Dynamic SQL : Apostrophe

Sep 20, 2007

OK so I need to use a dynamic SQL statement in a SqlDataSource object because I need to pass in the column name.  I'm having trouble accounting for the apostophes I have to interpret literals within the statement.  This is connecting to an Oracle database.
This is what I originally tried...
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSourceMine" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:My_Connection_String %>" ProviderName="<%$ ConnectionStrings:My_Connection_String.ProviderName %>" SelectCommand="SELECT m.YIE, :selecteditem, m.ENDTIME FROM MyMAP.MAP_M_SUM m WHERE (m.GROUPID LIKE 'YC%' AND m.GROUPID NOT LIKE 'YCX%' AND m.ENDTIME >= SYSDATE-14)">    <SelectParameters>        <asp:ControlParameter Name="selecteditem" ControlID="itemlabel" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" />    </SelectParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>
And the second column returned as :selecteditem for the column name and the value of itemlabel.text (what I wanted to be the column that was queried) as the value in each of the rows of that column.  So I tried dynamic SQL to put the value of itemlabel.txt as the column to be queried, but I'm not sure how to get the query to read the literals.  How can I accomplish this?
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSourceMine" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:My_Connection_String %>" ProviderName="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MY_Connection_String.ProviderName %>" SelectCommand="EXEC('SELECT m.YIE, '+selectedbin+', m.ENDTIME FROM MMAP.MAP_M_SUM m WHERE (m.GROUPID LIKE '+paramlike+' AND m.GROUPID NOT LIKE '+paramnotlike+' AND m.ENDTIME >= SYSDATE-14)')">    <SelectParameters>        <asp:ControlParameter Name="selectedbin" ControlID="binlabel" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" />        <asp:ControlParameter Name="paramlike" ControlID="Label1" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" />        <asp:ControlParameter Name="paramnotlike" ControlID="Label2" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" />    </SelectParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>
This errors to "illegal variable name"
Can someone help me out please?  Thanks a lot.

Add Apostrophe To Column In Result Set

Feb 5, 2004

I have a brain teaser for you all.

The end result: I need one of the columns in my result set (col2) to have a preceeding apostrophe (i.e., '001234 ).

The problem: I am building my query as a string and then using the EXEC() function to execute it. For example:
SET @strSQL = 'SELECT col1, col2 FROM mytable'
EXEC(@strSQL)

Just to tame any answers that might not be directed to the specific question, the query Must be built as a string and then executed.

I have been unable to obtain the solution and I am wondering if it is even possible?

TIA
