Using Stored Procedures To Set The Default Value Or Binding Of A Table Column
Nov 24, 2007
I want to be able to have an authorized person set or change the default values of a table column in a SQL Database. I have a stored procedure that sets the default which works fine: ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[addMyConst]
AS
BEGIN
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[tbl1]
ADD DEFAULT 70 FOR [Auto_ourlim]
END
(I still need to put parameters in so that I can run the stored procedure from a form, but for now....)
To change it I know that I have to drop the constraint first like this:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[dropmyValue]
AS
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[tbl1]
DROP CONSTRAINT [Auto_ourlim]
The problem is that when I execute the procedure I get the error that "Auto_ourlim" is not a constraint so it does not drop the Default Value. When I go over to SQL Server Management Studio Express I can see why:
If I open up the table and open up the Constraints the constraint is "DF__tbl1__Auto_ourli__5FB337D6". I could change the DROP CONSTRAINT to this, and that works, but it changes every time I add the new DEFAULT VALUE. I don't know how to get around it. Is there a way to put wildcards around "Auto_our" in DROP CONSTRAINT [Auto_ourlim}? Any suggestions would be welcome...even if there's a totally different way to do it.
What I'm trying to ultimately accomplish is this: Column1 (AutoLimits) would be user insert to the database and then in the database it would MINUS Column2 (Auto_ourlim - set with the default value) = Column3 (Difference - a computed field in the database)
Could any one suggest a query which yields the list of tables and columns used in a stored procedures. I know sp_depends has similar functionality, but would like to know the T-SQL code for that..
I have a little question. I have an application which interfaces with a SQL Express Database. On a form, I want to bind a control which is made of several Radio buttons to a table column which is in fact a varchar(1). This is the picture:
Table column: OptVisualRpt varchar(1)
Screen control: 2 radio buttons
rb_VisRPTbImp_O for "yes"
rb_VisRPTbImp_N for "no"
I'm really scratching my head as how I can bind a single table column to my radio buttons controls. I think that I just can't this way but rather have to use an intermediate variable or control.
Solution 1?
I thought of using a local variable that I would set to "y" or "n" following "CheckedChanged" events fired from radio buttons but I don't know how to bind this variable to my table column.
Solution 2?
I thought of placing a hidden text control into my form, which one would be binded to my table column, that I would also set to "y" or "n" following "CheckedChanged" events fired from radio buttons.
Any of these solutions which would be feasible or any more neat way to do it?
i found that some stored procedure get created automatically in sqlserver 2000 (system stored procedures) ,while doing my work i accidentally deleted those stored procedures can any body answer following questions1: why these stored procedures are there and automatically created2: what happen en if i deleted those stored procedures3: how to recreate those stored procedures with limited user permission thanks in advance
I want to change the default directory for my stored procedures. It is extremely inconvenient for me that they are placed in documents and settings... I cannot find a place in the Tools where I can change it.
Ok I have a script to generate a database, and newly added to the database is a date fild for a specfic table. I have the 'Default value or binding' set to (getdate()) how exactly would you add that to the script for then the table is initialy generated. Or is it soemthing I would need another script to do right after the table generation. This is the script for the table in question:CREATE TABLE [dbo].[cust_file] ( [id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL , [customer_id] [int] NULL , [filename] [varchar] (255) NULL , [filedata] [image] NULL , [contenttype] [varchar] (255) NULL , [length] [int] NULL, [added_date] [datetime] NULL) ON [PRIMARY] TEXTIMAGE_ON [PRIMARY]GO Any help would be great,Tim MeersWannabe developer.
Hey guys, how can I use a long text as default value in my database (column properties)?I tried to paste my 10 row text into the field but it will only paste the first row as default value.any ideas??
I'm trying to set an int type attribute to 0 for its Default Value, but it keeps reverting to ((0)). What is causing this?
Every int type attribute on that table does the same. There is one bit type attribute and a bunch of other type of attributes, but non of them are giving me a problem. The table is a copy from another database and I did check all the constraints and properties to make sure they're the same.
I just moved from Access to SQL 2005 Express. I have a table with contains a Column contactDate datetime. Under the properties tab ( in SQL Manager ), I see a field "Default Value or Binding".
I would like to have a default date/time entered into this field when a new record is created. In Access I used the Now() to get this done. Any sites that list some of the values that can be entered into this field?
Hi,I have a column (type: datetime) in which I want to load the current date and time. What should I fill in in the default value or binding so that SQL server automatically fills this column? Thanks!
I have a table with a column: ThruDate datetime not null
I have a function call set up as default for the col ([dbo].[fn_DateHigh_Get1]())
I have a stored procedure that inserts into the table - it expects @ThruDate as a parm. I default the parm to NULL -
When the sp executes its insert stmt i get error 515 (null cannot be inserted....). When i just enter the row manually in enterprise manger (and just tab through the ThruDate col) all is well - ThruDate gets the default as calculated by function [dbo].[fn_DateHigh_Get1]()
Why does the sp fail - i.e. why isn't the default applied?
i am inserting something into the temp table even without creating it before. But this does not give any compilation error. Only when I want to execute the stored procedure I get the error message that there is an invalid temp table. Should this not result in a compilation error rather during the execution time.?
--create the procedure and insert into the temp table without creating it. --no compilation error. CREATE PROC testTemp AS BEGIN INSERT INTO #tmp(dt) SELECT GETDATE() END
only on calling the proc does this give an execution error
How do I use table names stored in variables in stored procedures?
Code Snippetif (select count(*) from @tablename) = 0 or (select count(*) from @tablename) = 1000000
I receive the error 'must declare table variable '@tablename''
I've looked into table variables and they are not what I would require to accomplish what is needed. After browsing through the forums I believe I need to use dynamic sql particuarly involving sp_executesql. However, I am pretty new at sql and do not really understand how to use this and receive an output parameter from it(msdn kind of confuses me too). I am tryin got receive an integer count of the records from a certain table which can change to anything depending on what the user requires.
Code Snippet
if exists(Select * from sysobjects where name = @temptablename) drop table @temptablename
It does not like the 'drop table @temptablename' part here. This probably wouldn't be an issue if I could get temporary tables to work, however when I use temporary tables i get invalid object '#temptable'.
Heres what the stored procedure does. I duplicate a table that is going to be modified by using 'select into temptable' I add the records required using 'Insert into temptable(Columns) Select(Columns)f rom TableA' then I truncate the original table that is being modified and insert the temporary table into the original.
Heres the actual SQL query that produces the temporary table error.
Code Snippet Select * into #temptableabcd from TableA
Insert into #temptableabcd(ColumnA, ColumnB,Field_01, Field_02) SELECT ColumnA, ColumnB, Sum(ABC_01) as 'Field_01', Sum(ABC_02) as 'Field_02', FROM TableB where ColumnB = 003860 Group By ColumnA, ColumnB
TRUNCATE TABLE TableA
Insert into TableA(ColumnA, ColumnB,Field_01, Field_02) Select ColumnA, ColumnB, Sum(Field_01) as 'Field_01', Sum('Field_02) as 'Field_02', From #temptableabcd Group by ColumnA, ColumnB
The above coding produces
Msg 208, Level 16, State 0, Line 1
Invalid object name '#temptableabcd'.
Why does this seem to work when I use an actual table? With an actual table the SQL runs smoothly, however that creates the table names as a variable problem from above. Is there certain limitation with temporary tables in stored procedures? How would I get the temporary table to work in this case if possible?
Does anyone have a TSQL utility (that they can share) that recursively searchs sysobjects for a matching input parameter string(for instance column name) for stored procedure object properties that returns the stored procedure name?
Hello Friends..I m using vwd 2005 express along with sql express.I have a web form with different server controls like textboxes, labels, radiobuttons, listboxes etc.lets focus on listbox. 1..For example lets say,ListBox contains 5 email addresses of the user. Now my main problem is when i submit my webform, all my data from textboxes, radiobuttons etc gets stored into the sqldatabase. But the data from my ListBox doesnot get stored into the database. But when i manually select a single email address from the listbox the email address in this case gets saved in the database. But as soon as i choose multiple email address then in this case only the first email address only gets saved but not the rest. How to over come this problem? I have a column named "email" in my table in the database. Can some one explain me this with the code(C#).. 2..And my 2nd question is i dont want to manually select the data from the listbox so that it gets saved into the database. I want all the email address in the Listbox gets automatically selected as soon as i click on the save button at the end of my web form. Any idea on how to approach this, friends? Thanks.. Jack.
I'm trying to use a SQL 2000 view in one of my sources. The view isnt anything special --- just three tables that have been unioned together. All these three tables have the EXACT same datatypes as well as column names. There are no constraints on these tables (yet). There is an identity seed on the first ID column. However, when I try to access this view, it generates the following error:
Server: Msg 4502, Level 16, State 1, Procedure MyView, Line 5 View or function 'MyView' has more column names specified than columns defined. Server: Msg 4413, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Could not use view or function 'MyView' because of binding errors.
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT TOP 1 1 FROM dbo.syscolumns WHERE id = OBJECT_ID(N'dbo.Employee) and name = 'DoNotCall') BEGIN ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Employee] ADD [DoNotCall] bit not null Constraint DoNot_Call_Default DEFAULT 0 IF ( @@ERROR <> 0 ) GOTO QuitWithRollback END
It just takes a LOT of time in SQL Server Management studio. I have to cancel the query and cancelling takes a whole lot time. I am using SQL Server 2008.
i have a procedure like below but it dosen't return any tableSELECT Hardwares.HWID, Hardwares.Title FROM Hardwares INNER JOIN Category ON Hardwares.CategoryID = Category.CategoryID WHERE (Category.Type LIKE '%Hardware%') AND (Category.Title = @Title)
How can I pass a name of a table to a stored procedure. I want to pass the name as a parameter. The table already exists in the db. After that, I will do "SELECT ..... FROM @tableparameter" What is the right way to do that?
Hi, is there any way that I can automate granting user permissions totables/ stored procedures in SQL server 2000?I have a whole bunch of tables and rather than having to right click eachtable/ then permissions in Enterprise manager I would like to be able toiterate through each table object in a database and grant the relevantpermissions.... Same with stored procedures. Is this possible?? If so, how can I do itThanks in advanceMark
I have SSIS which will have OLF DB Source, and then have Derived Column component to managering all data from OLF DB Source. I used to have default columns such as Create Date, Update Date set as fixed date. Now we decided to put this default column values into a table to manage. I then have problem to choose which component I should use in order to have this columns selected from default table.
For example: if Create Date is null, I have to select default value from the default table; otherwise, use Create Date value and so on.
Hi everyone.I'd like to know how stored procedures and table-valued functions compare when it comes to returning a resultant set of data. I know there is a link somewhere but I can't immediately find it.Thanks.
I have a strange problem with an OleDB call to a stored procedure thatreturns a rowset.Only the first time I execute the query, after I restart SqlServer, myprogram crashes becausethe rowset is empty. All next calls (after restarting my program, ofcourse) run successfully. The context is:1) if I do not bind the output rowset, my program doesn't crash2) If I run the call without the binding and then I run the call withthe binding, it doesn't crash3) It is not the first query I do in my session4) the call crashes only if in the SP there are some inserts: it is awell known problem with OleDB, but in manyother cases I have fixed it setting NOCOUNT to ON
I have some problem about bind field from stored procedure to report.
Now I have dataset that come form stored procedure. In Dataset Dialog, "Fields" tab, I add Fieldname like fieldname in stored procedure. And "Parameters" tab, I add parameters those are neccessary for my stored procedure.
I test on data tab view. When I click "!" to run, then there is input dialog parameter. I filled it, then the result is ok.
But when I build project, I noticed warning message....
[rsMissingFieldInDataSet] The data set €˜MyDataSet€™ contains a definition for the Field €˜MyField€™. This field is missing from the returned result set from the data source. c:.....visual studio 2005projects eport project1 eport project1Report7.rdl 0 0
[rsErrorReadingDataSetField] The data set €˜MyDataSet€™ contains a definition for the Field €˜MyField€™. The data extension returned an error during reading the field. There is no data for the field at position 6. c:.....visual studio 2005projects eport project1 eport project1Report7.rdl 0 0
After I build my project, I run the report, each textbox that binded field, display empty value.
What happen with my report? And how can I solve this problem?
We are migrating a SQL 6.5 application with 1900 stored procedures that use 100's of temp tables to SQL 2000.
A problem we have encountered was that we started out getting an "invalid column" errors on certain procedures. Investigation determined that the error was being generated in a nested procedure. The table that caused the error ended up being a temp table that was created using "select into". The following select statement from that temp table gave the invalid column error.
First thinking it was the "Select Into" we then discovered that the outer most procedure had created a temp table of the same name prior to executing the lower level procedure. After the select into, the next statement was a SELECT that went against what it thought was the inner temp table. However, it grabbed the outermost temp table and then couldn't find the appropriate columns and generated the error.
The solution, of course, was to rename the inner most temp table. We also remove the "select into" in the procedure by explicitly creating the temp table.
We tried creating some test procedures to attempt to reproduce this scenario without complete success.
Our test created 3 procedures (sp1 calling sp2 calling sp3) to mimic the current scenario. Sp1 created a temp table and executed sp2, which executed sp3. Sp3 created another temp table using the same name as the one created in sp1.
If we create all three procedures at the same time, it doesn't matter if we change the order in which they are created or whether we create the inner temp table explicitly or with a "select into", SQL Query Analyzer won't let us create the procedure because it finds that the temp table has been declared twice. If we create the procedures separately however, they compile and allow sp3 to create a temp table by the same name as sp1. After creating the procedures independently, they runs properly in all cases with everything in proper scope and no problems.
Admittedly, this is bad coding to start with, but what is happening with the scope of the temp tables within the stored procedures?
