Using A Tape Robot On A Linux Machine For Backups...
Aug 14, 2007
We have a heterogenious network of Windows 2003 Server/SQL Server 2005 machines and Linux file servers. For various reasons our HP/Compaq DLT tape drive robots are attached to our Linux file servers.
What options exist for sending backups to remote tape drives that are attached to a Linux host? I'm interested in solutions that have been actually implemented (we've been having plenty of fun with "this should work" scenarios ).
Perhaps this maybe a silly simple questions SCENERIO: Say i want to make a nightly backup of the Masterdb and the same for a user database. One that kicks off at 8 and the other at 9. For soem reason I am having difficult time with this.. Some help please??
I have a COTS database on MSSQL 6.5, no service packs... I used sp_help_revdatabase to create the same database on a different server, using the same data and log device sizes and paths. I scripted the database, tables, stored procedures, and user defined datatypes, created them on the new server, and tried to restore a tape dump from the previous server to the new database. It would say "restoring", but then "DBLibrary is dead or connection broken", when I click OK to this message, it sais "restore complete" then the database appears grayed out and reads "loading".
I need to collect data from 60 SQL Server into one big DB2 server using mulit threaded C program under linux, just wonder if anyone have tried to make a program under linux to get data from MS SQL Server under windows.
i need to code in C under linux, connect to SQL server and also connect to DB2 server
what i understand so far we need on clinet side (linux machine)
1. ODBC software ( there is open source unixODBC )
2. MS SQL Deiver under linux ( i checked softlink )
Hi, I back up SQL Server 2000 and SQL server 2005 databases to hard disk using the SQL Server Backup Wizard and maintenance plans. Then, I copy the resulting backups to tape using third party tape backup software and compression by the backup software and hardware. I do not use the SQL Server Agent available for the third party backup software. Is this acceptable, or does the compression performed by the third party backup system introduce opportunities for database corruption or other negative effects?
I would like to know if anyone has a recommended method for having backups to tape while running log shipping. For example, is it possible to copy the transaction log backups used for log shipping to tape and apply them to a Full Database Restore from a 3rd Party Backup tool such as Veritas?
My goal is to be able to do a point-in-time restore from tape and still be able to use SQL Server 2005 Log Shipping.
Can we backup our cluster databases directly to tape using native backups (without using any third party tool) ? It's SQL Server 2012 two node Active/Passive cluster. One of the DB will be huge in size, hence checking if we can directly backup from the cluster instance to a tape.
Hi I building an application that I need a kind of robot, which reset some fields of my Data Base every month. Does someone know how could I do it? For while I’m resetting these fields manually by a ASP.Net page. I thought in put this event in the Global.asax that in every start of application he would compare the date, which he started to the last day that the Data Base was updated, and if it was more than one month he would raise the event.
The space allocated to the Log in question is 180 GB. During this time period I was running TLog backups every 5 minutes, yet the log continued to chew through to 80 GB used, even after the process was complete and a final TLog backup had been taken. It continued to stay very large until the Full backup was complete -- or something else that I'm unaware of completed. Like every other DBA I typically take a TLog backup to shrink the log, but what appeared to be the case here was the Full completed and it released the used log space. All said, will Transaction Log backups not free up the log during Full backups?
Help! I am using Script Transformation to output a new column as image[DT_IMAGE] field to store serialized object. In the VB script, the sample code as
The package always runs fine on my developing machine and will halt on other machine at AddBlobData after certain number row records were processed. I am stuck here. Anyone has any suggestion?
What I need is reading data from mutiple tables in one database and writing into a single table in another datable. In order preserve all the columns data, I use input column fields to construct a new object and then serialize it, and store the serialize data into detination db table. (The object and serialization function is coming from c# dll.)
Dim b As BusinessLicense = New BusinessLicense() b.ApprovalDate = Row.approvaldate b.BusinessId = Row.busid b.BusinessName = Row.busname b.NaicsCode = Row.naicscode b.NaicsDescription = Row.naicsdescr b.OwnerName = Row.ownername b.Phone = Row.phone b.Pkey = Row.pkey b.RenewalDate = Row.renewaldate b.StartDate = Row.startdate b.Suite = Row.suite
Row.serializedobject.AddBlobData(Serializer.Serialize(b)) '''----This is blocking line Row.infoType = BusinessLicense.TYPE
Both machine is xp with sp2. and standard SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06
Hi to everyone, I'm facing a problem that drives me crazy. I've a web application that has the following problem. When I test the application on my developement machine all runs fine, but when I put into production server there is a problem in connection pooling. Look at the following image, the blue line is the number of connection in the pool and the violet line is the number of connection reclaimed. From the image it is clear that connection are returned on the pool only in block, maybe when the garbage collection pass and reclaim the object. The strange thing is that on my developement machine all is good, and also I'm using Enterprise Library and the connection are managed internally.- Thanks to everyone for any help.
Hullo all I have two machines, One is a standalone machine and the other is on a domain network. How can I run a stored procedure/job on the standalone machine from the domain machine ? running the procedure as a Domain user results in a failed job/stored proc. also creating an sql login and attempting to run it as that user also fails. How can I solve this problem ? please e-mail me at wayde@sunnygrp.com if you have any thoughts...

I was wondering if there was any white papers on the migration part from microsoft? Apparently the situation is like this Currently installed MOSS 2007 in a testing pc as application server. This application server will refer another testing database server which running SQL Server 2005.
Now, wanted to move this 2 temporary server into another 2 new servers. Correct me if I'm wrong, it cannot be done by using image like Norton Ghost due to difference hardware spec.
So, if I install another fresh copy of MOSS2007 & SQL server 2005 in that 2 new servers, how can I migrate the contents, documents, etc from the testing database server?
It would be great if someone can show me the links to kb article. Thanks

Can I connect to the MS SQL database from the Redhat Linux 9. Is there MS SQL client or database driver on linux available. I wanted to use the data from the MS SQL database in the C++ program running on Linux.
there are some crazy people that tried to install MSDE/SQL server on linux (with wine)? P.S. When a commercial guy ask you if something can be done, don't answer "maybe", because he'll get it as a "sure"....
Hi everyone,I'm looking into moving my desktop system at work to Linux from WindowsXP, and one tool I've yet to find a suitable replacement for is MS SQLEnterprise Manager. I mainly need to query MS SQL databases fromLinux, and management tasks (monitor backups, services, etc) can bedone on the MS SQL servers themselves. THere was an application I usedto use on OSX which would connect to a variety of databases, includingMS SQL, and they had a Linux version of the client .. but can'tremember the name. But really any Sybase client that can connect to MSSQL with some ease will work. Thanks for any suggestions or ideas ...Alex
Hey Guys - I was just wondering - if you have started to use Linux Servers along with SQL Server- and if so, which Distribution of Linux and for what purpose. Cheers - Mark Smith
