Using The Flat File OLE DB Provider In An ActiveX Component

Jun 23, 1999

Does anyone have any examples of using VB to automate a DTSPumpTask to import and transform a flat file. How do you use the dtsffile.dll OLE DB provider for an ADO connection or command object? I would like to create a task to transform a flat file and be able to pass in various parameters to make the load flexible. If possible respond to ScottMiles@Epotec.com

Thanks for any help.

Anybody know how to troubleshoot these errors? I can't find anything on this error code. The same script works in DTS.

Script Component Leading Blank Row In Flat File

Jan 7, 2008

I have created a Script Component in my Data Flow that basically reads records from an SQL Table and outputs 3 rows for each input row. My problem is that the Script is outputing a blank row at the beginning of the file. I have requested no headers for the delimited file. I know it is the script because my data viewer from the table doesn't show this additional line where the data viewer from my script and the file has the additional blank line.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

New Custom Flat File Connection Manager Component

Jul 6, 2007

The standard flat file connection component does not handle flat files with different column counts on different rows. Since that's the type of file I have to read, I like to create a modified version of the flat file connection manager that can do this. I have found some info in how to create a connection manager. But I can't find anything that tels me how to build one that would be recognized by the flat file source dataflow component.

So how do you build an connection manager that can used by the standard flat file source component? Anyone ever did this or knows were to get the docs?

I know my problem is also solvable by reading the row into a single column and then using a script component to split them but that is not the solution I want.

The Product Level Is Insufficient For Component Flat File Source

Apr 5, 2007

Hi all,

I have created a dts (.dtsx file). which gets the data from my log file and insert into my sql 2005 table. In dts i am using 'Flat File Source' and 'OLE DB Destination' (becoz i need to acess my db remotely). When i execute this through 'SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio' it's working fine but when i execute this through my c# code, it throws me an error 'The product level is insufficient for component Flat File Source (1)'.

My c# code :

string strLocalPath = @"d:FTPServiceMyPackage.dtsx";

Application app = new Application();

Package package2 = app.LoadPackage(strLocalPath, null);

// Now that the package is loaded, we can query on

// its properties.

int n = package2.Configurations.Count;

DTSProtectionLevel pl = package2.ProtectionLevel;

DTSExecResult result2 = package2.Execute();

string strErrorDesc = "";

if (result2 == DTSExecResult.Failure)

{

foreach (DtsError local_DtsError in package2.Errors)

{

strErrorDesc = local_DtsError.Description;

}

}

Output of all objects :

n = 0

p1 = EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey

result2 = Failure

strErrorDesc = The product level is insufficient for component "Flat File Source" (1).

Please help me to solve this problem ASAP.

Thanks

Flat File Source Not Communicating With Script Component Properly

Jun 29, 2007

Hi there,

I have a flat file source in my data flow that is suppose to feed through a couple of columns to a script component. All of the columns have data but when I debug in my script component (with the aid of messageboxes) I can see that one of then is empty.

This is wrong because when I preview that data in the flat file source, I can see that the columns are all populated.

Has anyone ever encountered that a flat file source doesn't communicate with a script component properly? I mean it does pass through the data of all other columns except for one.

I have replaced the components in case it had become corrupt and I even rebuild the package but the problem still persists.

Any advice would be welcome

Mike

Source Script Component Using A Flat File Connection - System.ArgumentException: Empty Pathname Is Not Legal.

Jul 18, 2006

I am using a Foreach loop container to go thru all the files downloaded from the ftp site and I am assigning the file name of each file to a variable at the foreach loop level called filename.  In the dataflow task inside the foreach loop container, I have a source script component that uses a flat file connection.  The connection string of the flat file connection is set to the filename variable declared at the foreach loop level.  However the script component has a error System.ArgumentException: Empty pathname is not legal.

Please let me know how to correct this?  The connectionString property of the flat file connection is set to the complete filename including the path.  Does a script component need to have a flat file name specified in the flat file connection that it is using?  I need to have a script source component as the flat file I am reading from is not in any of the standard formats.

The flat file connection manager's connection string property is blanked out the moment I specify an Expression for the connection string.  Is this a defect or is it expected behavior.

Any inputs appreciated.

PS:  I looked thru Jamie's blog at

http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson/archive/2005/05/30/1489.aspx

when implementing the above package.

Thanks,

Manisha

Outputting Status To Job Log From SSIS ActiveX Component

Apr 29, 2008

I have an ActiveX component in my SSIS package, and it is written in VB. Something is going wrong, and I'm not sure what. I works fine when run from Visual Studio, but when I move it to our server and try to run it from a job there, it fails. I'd like to know WHERE in the component it is failing, so I'd like to send output to something as it goes along, so I can see how far it is getting.

How do I send text to an output or log file?

I can't use MsgBox, because, of course, when it runs as a job, it is putting that message box up on the server, where there is no-one to respond to it, so it hangs. I'm in the process of converting it from a DTS to SSIS, and it does have several instances of MsgBox now. And it's locking up -- on one of them.

I have logging turned on for the job step, and it is writing to a dbo.sysdtslog90 table, but all it tells me is that it is starting that ActiveX script task.

What can I replace the MsgBox with, so that it outputs somewhere to a file? Is there a simple command, like WScript.Echo or Console.WriteLine (neither of which I can get to work)?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Unable To Edit Pre-defined Flat File Connection Manager Properties In The Flat File Destination Editor

Aug 24, 2007

Hi,

I am testing SSIS and have created a Flat File Destination. I defined the Flat File Connection as New for the first time and it worked fine. Now, I would like to go back and modify the Flat File Connection in the Flat File Destination Editor, but it allows only to create a New connection rather allowing me to edit the existing one. For testing, I can go back and create a new connection, but if my connection had 50-100 columns then it would be an issue to re-create it from scratch.

Did someone else faced this issue?

Thanks,

Flat File Connection Manager Throws Error When A Column Gets Added To The Flat File

Dec 27, 2006

Hi,

I have a situation where a tab limited text file is used to populate a sql server table.

The tab limited text file comes from a third party vendor. There are fixed number of columns we need to export to the sql server table. However the third party may add colums in the text file. Whenenver the text file has an added column (which we dont need to import) the build fails since the flat file connection manager does not create the metadata for it again. The problem goes away  where I press the button "Reset Columns" since it builds the metadata then. Since we need to build the tables everyday we cannot automate it using SSIS because the metadata does not change automatically. Is there a way out in SSIS?

Converting Flat File To SQL2005 Table (Flat File From H***)

Feb 11, 2008

First, a couple of important bits of information. Until last week, I had never touched SISS, and therefore, I know very little about it. I just never had the need to use it...until now. I was able to convert my first 3 flat files to SQL2005 tables by right clicking on "SISS Package" and choosing "SISS Import and Export Wizard". That is the extent of my knowledge! So please, please, please be patient with me and be as descriptive as possible.

I thought I could attach some sample files to this post, but it doesn't look like I can. I'll just paste the information below in two separate code boxes. The first code box is the flat file specifications and the second one is a sample single line flat file similar to what I'm dealing with (the real flat file is over 2 gigs).

My questions are below the sample files.

Code Snippet
Record Length 400

Positions Length FieldName

Record Type 01
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "01")
3,12 L=10 Site Name
13,19 L=7 Account Number
20,29 L=10 Sub Account
30,35 L=6 Balance
36,37 L=1 Active
37,41 L=5 Filler
Record Type 02
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "02")
3,4 L=2 State
5,30 L=26 Address
31,41 L=11 Filler
Record Type 03
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "03")
3,6 L=4 Coder
7,20 L=14 Locator ID
21,22 L=2 Age
23,41 L=19 Filler
Record Type 04
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "04")
3,9 L=7 Process
10,19 L=10 Client
20,26 L=6 DOB
26,41 L=16 Filler
Record Type 05
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "05")
3,16 L=14 Guarantor
17,22 L=6 Guar Account
23,23 L=1 Active Guar
**There can be multiple 05 records, one for each Guarantor on the account**

and the single line flat file...

Code Snippet
01Site1 12345 0000098765 Y 02NY1155 12th Street 03ELL 0522071678 29 04TestingSmith,Paul071678 05Smith, Jane 445978N 05Smith, Julie 445989N 05Smith, Jenny 445915N 01Site2 12346 0000098766 N 02MN615 Woodland Ct 04InfoJones,Chris 012001 01Site3 12347 0000098767 Y 02IN89 Jade Street 03OWB 6429051282 25 04Screen New,Katie 879500

As you can see, each entry could have any number of records and multiples of some of the record types, with one exception, every entry must have a "01" record and can only have one "01" record. Oh, and each record has a length of 400.

I need to get this information into a SQL 2005 database so I can create a front end for accessing the data. Originally, I wanted one line for each account and have null values listed for entries that don't have a specific record. Now that I've looked at the data again, that doesn't look like a good idea. I think a better way to do it would be to create 5 different tables, one for each record type. However, records 2 through 5 don't have anything I can make a primary key. So here are my questions...

Is it possible to make 5 tables from this one file, one table for each of the record types?

If so, can I copy the Account number in record 01, position 13-19 in each of the subsequent record types (that way I could link the tables as needed)?

Can this be done using the SISS Import and Export Wizard to create the package? If not, I'm going to need some very basic step by step instructions on how to create the package.

Is SISS the best way to do this conversion or is there another program that would be better to use?
I know this is a huge question and I appreciate the help of anyone who boldly decides to help me! Thank you in advance and I welcome anyone's suggestions!

The SSE Provider Did Not Find The Database File Specified In The Connection String. At The Configured Trust Level (below High Trust Level), The SSE Provider Can Not Automatically Create The Database File.

Aug 31, 2007

The problem that I am having is that with Visual Web Developer I am creating a webpage and having it directly put online, so for example when I start a new ASP.NET page, I select the location to be HTTP, with the location http://MYWEBSERVER/Website   and for the language and Visual BasicI notice a couple of things, first that there is no longer a a link under the Main toolbar "Website" selection called the ASP.NET configuration.  So how can I configure what I want to have users be able to do?  It seems that this choice is only available if I am building the ASP.NET page on my "localhost".  So that is the first problem.  So I am able to get the pages to work, atleast the things such as the textboxes to show up etc, (Even things as advanced as the "Login" box).  How ever when I try to get someone to try to login  I am taken to a page that has an server error.  The error is:
"The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file. "
The Stack Trace Errors are at the bottom.  I think this is happening because the automatically generated databases are not getting built online as they are on my computer.  On my computer I have MSSQL express.  So either the databases are not getting built for some reason, (and I think that is the case as I don't see any in the folder).  So I think that somehow I have to create a database on my server, and then somehow configure the ASP.NET file, perhaps in the Web.Config file to look for that new database.  Is this the correct methodology?   Is there some simpler way that I can just somehow upload things as they are and have them work correctly on my server?   The error says that either the Server did not find the database or that the trust level was insufficient.  I don't think that is it as I just looked again and I don't see any .MDF files.  So how would I go about getting this to work right? Is there a way to do this with MySQL also?  So that I don't have to use MSSQL?  My server only allows 1 DataBase for that.
Thanks and I hope my question makes sense.  It is basically how can I get it to be able to create and check users etc. online?

Package With A Custom Component (log Provider) Runs In BIDS, But Doesn't Run Where Deployed.

Feb 14, 2007

Hi,

I have a package with a custom log provider, which runs in BIDS. However when I deploy the package onto SQL Server and run it on the deployed machine, if fails:

"failed to decrypt protected XML node DTS:Password...key not valid for use in specified state..."

Now this is definately to do with the custom log, as if I take it out & redeploy, I can run it on the deplyed server + also run it within a job. I have entered the custom log provider library (+ other required DLLs) in the GAC on the deployed machine, but I'm clearly missing something.

Any ideas pls??? I'm really stuck.

Many thanks in advance,

How Can I Take This Example Flat File And Parse Out Each Section To A New Flat File? Each Section Starts With HD (header Row)

Mar 13, 2006

How can I take this example Flat file and parse out each section to a new flat file?  Each section starts with HD (header row)

http://www.webfound.net/flat_file_example.txt

e.g. an example output file based on above (cutting out the first section) would be:

http://www.webfound.net/flatfile_output.txt

Also, I'll need to grab a certain value in each header row (certain position in the 100 byte header row) to use that as part of the filename that's outputed.  I assume it would be better to insert these rows into a temp table then somehow do a search on a specific position in the row...but that's impossible?  The other route is to insert each row into a temp table separated out by fields but that is going to be too combursome because we have several formats to determine separation of fields based on the row type so I'd have to create many temp tables and many components in SSIS when all we want to do is again:

1) output each group (broken by each header row) into it's own txt file

2) use a field in  the  header row as part of the name of the output txt file (e.g. look at the first row, whcih is a header row in flat_file_example. txt.  I want to grab the text 'AR10' and use that as part of the filename that I create

Any suggestions on how to approach this whole process in SSIS...the simplest approach that will work ?

Moving A File Using Activex In DTS

Jun 17, 2004

I am attempting to export a records to an excel file using DTS and then use activex to rename the file to include the date it was run. To do this i just move the file.

However when the script is run, it fails saying that permission is denied on the "move" line. I have seen other reports saying that permission is denied when using the "CreateObject" however i have implemented the changes it says, ie/ adding the SQL Agent login using the DCOMcnfg utility and renaming the DefaultAccessPermission key in the registry, with no success. It also doesnt seem to fail on that line anyway.

I have also added all the groups and usernames with full control to the security of the folder the file is in to no avail either.

'**********************************************************************
' Visual Basic ActiveX Script
'************************************************************************

Function Main()
Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success

Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")

'
Set bFile = fso.GetFile("c:DTS reportsoutput.XLS")
aYear = year(now)
aMonth = month(now)
aDay = day(now)
filename = "output" &aYear & aMonth & aDay & ".xls"
bFile.move ("c:DTS Reports"&filename)
'fso.MoveFile "c:DTS Reportsoutput.xls", "c:DTS Reports"&filename

Set fso = Nothing

End Function

Does anyone know what kind of permissions the folder the file is in must have in order for this script to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

DTS ActiveX BCP File Manipulation

Does anyone know the best way to handle this type of situation?

A file coming into a directory based on the date filename042707
I use the fileexist stored procedure to check for the existence.
I use xp_cmdshell(sp)... stored procedure to rename the file so that
it just has filename instead of the date.... I can not use
variables within the xp_cmdshell to replace the date...
everyday the filename would change to filename042807,filename042907 etc....

Basically I know how to copy the file to another directory if it exists...
then I want to strip the right 8 characters off... rename just to that
but with the rename i have to know what the file will be named for that day ...
excuse the grammar just somewhat tired...
any suggestions... please thanks time for sleep

ActiveX To Copy And Rename File

Feb 3, 2006

Hi,

I'm looking to use ActiveX in a DTS to copy a file from on elocation to another.
I have the code for this (attached below kindly supplied by a colleague), so that's cool.

dim filesys
set filesys=CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")

If filesys.FileExists("D:CreditsCredits_MTD.mdb") Then
filesys.CopyFile "D:CreditsCredits_MTD.mdb", _
"C:CreditsCredits_200602.mdb"
End If

But what I'm looking to do is go one step further.
As you can see, it renames the file to yyyymm, but this is hard coded, and I'm looking for a coded solution so I can rename the file with yesterday's date.

Can anybody help me please?

Close An MS Access File With An ActiveX Script??

Apr 7, 2005

Hi,

I have an ActiveX script running in a DTS package that checks for the existence on an Access.mdb file (using the filesystemobject), deletes the file if it's there and then re-creates a fresh empty Access database (using ADOX). This is great except one problem. If someone has the original Access mdb file open while I'm running this script, it's impossible to delete the file while its 'in use'. I'm not sure how to get around this problem. I've tried researching the filesystemobject to see if I can close the existing file before deleting it but the only Close method I found applies to text stream documents created with fso.

Does anyone have any ideas about how solve this problem?

MSSQL - DTS Package - Find Distinct Rows - Output To TXT File - ActiveX?

Hello All,I am trying to create a DTS package.I have two tables tbl_A and tbl_B with similar data/rows but noprimary keys.tbl_A is master.I would like this package to query tbl_A and tbl_B and find1)all rows in tbl_A that are different in tbl_B, 2)all rows in tbl_Athat are not present in tbl_B and3)all rows in tbl_B that are not present in tbl_A, and then just showthose rows.Can this be done with a simple UNION?Perhaps this could produce a temp Table that can be dropped once theDTS package exists successfully.The 2nd part after all the above rows are retrieved is that I wouldlike to add an addional Column to the retrieved data called STATUSwhich has 3 possible values(letters) at the end of each row...M (modified) means that row exists in tbl_B but has 1 or moredifferent columnsA (add) means this row exists in tbl_A but not in tbl_BD (delete) means this row exists in tbl_B but not in tbl_AI'm hopping this DTS package would output a nice comma seperated TXTfile with only...1) rows from tbl_A that are different in tbl_B (STATUS M)2) rows from tbl_A that are not present in tbl_B (STATUS A)3) rows from tbl_B that are not present in tbl_A (STATUS D)Can a DTS package in MS SQL be used to perfom all of the above tasks?I would very much appreciate any help or any advise.Thanks in advance :-)

The Component Metadata For Component DataReader Source Could Not Be Upgraded To The Newer Version Of The Component.

Jan 23, 2007

Hi,

I have a package which reads an Access file from a folder. My connection manager to this file is .NET providers for OledbMicrosoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider.

Package works from my computer. But when I execute it on the server as a SQL Agent job, I get

The component metadata for "component "DataReader Source" (1) could not be upgraded to the newer version of the component. The PerformUpgrade method failed.

I copied the mdb file to a folder on the server which my packages have no problem reading data from.

My packages run under the same domain account as defined in proxies.

Appreciate a help.

Gulden

Integration Services :: Get FileName Fo Each File Created Via Dynamic Flat File Destination

Jul 24, 2015

Need to know how I can get the dynamic filename created in the FlatFile destination for insert into a package audit table?

Scenario: Have created a package that successfully outputs Dynamiclly named flat files { Format: C:Test’Comms_File_’ + ‘User::FileNumber’+’_’+Date +’.txt’

E.g.: Comms_File_1_20150724.txt, Comms_File_2_20150724.txt  etc} using Foreach Loop Container  :

* Enumerator Set to: “Foreach ADO Enumerator” with the ADO object source variable selected to identify how many total loop iterations there are i.e. Let’s say 4 thus 4 files to be created

*Variable Mappings : added the User::FileNumber – indicates which file number current loop iteration is i.e. 1,2,3,4

For the DataFlow task have a OLDBSource and a FlatFile Destination where Flat File ConnectionString is set up as:

@[User::Output_Path] + "Comms_File"+ @[User:: FileNumber] +"_" + replace((DT_WSTR, 10) (DT_DBDATE) GETDATE(),"-","")+ ".txt"

All this successfully creates these 4 files:

Comms_File_1_20150724.txt, Comms_File_2_20150724.txt, Comms_File_3_20150724.txt, Comms_File_4_20150724.txt

Now the QUESTION is how do I get these filenames as I need to insert them into a DB Audittable. The audit table looks like this:

CREATE TABLE dbo.MMMAudit
  (
     AuditID      INT IDENTITY(1, 1) NOT NULL,
     PackageName     VARCHAR(100) NULL,

FileName           VARCHAR(100) NULL,
     LoadTime        DATETIME NULL,
     NumberofRecords INT NULL
  )

To save the Filename & how many records in each file in our Audit Table, am using an Execute SQL Task and configuring it as this:

Execute SQL Task

Parameter mapping - Mapped the User Variable (RecordsInserted) and System Variable( PackageName) to Insert statement as shown below

SQLStatement: INSERT INTO [dbo].[MMMAudit] (
PackageName,NumerofRecords,LoadTime)
 (?,?.GETDATE)

Again this all works terrific & populates the dbo.MMMAudit table as shown below BUT I also need to insert the respsctive file name – How do I do that?

AuditID PackageName FileName  NumberOfRecords
1           MMM       NULL                      12
2          MMM  NULL                23
3          MMM  NULL      14
4          MMM  NULL              1

Read Text File From Flat File Connection Manager SSIS

May 13, 2008

Hello Experts,
I am createing one task (user control) in SSIS. I have property grid in my GUI and 2 buttons (OK & Cancle).
PropertyGrid has Properties like SourceConnection, OutputConnection etc....right now I am able to populate Connections in list box next to Source and Output Property.

Now my question to you guys is depending on Source Connection it should read that text file associated with connection manager. After validation it should pick header (first line of text file bases on record type) and write it into new file when task is executed. I have following code for your reference. Please let me know I am going in right direction or not..
What should go here ?
->Under Class A

public override DTSExecResult Execute(Connections connections, VariableDispenser variableDispenser, IDTSComponentEvents componentEvents, IDTSLogging log, object transaction)

{

//Some code to read file and write it into new file

return DTSExecResult.Success;

}

public const string Property_Task = "CustomErrorControl";

public const string Property_SourceConnection = "SourceConnection";

public void LoadFromXML(XmlElement node, IDTSInfoEvents infoEvents)

{

if (node.Name != Property_Task)

{

throw new Exception(String.Format("Invalid task element '{0}' in LoadFromXML.", node.Name));

}

else

{

try

{

_sourceConnectionId = node.Attributes.GetNamedItem(Property_SourceConnection).Value;

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

infoEvents.FireError(0, "LoadFromXML", ex.Message, "", 0);

}

}

}

public void SaveToXML(XmlDocument doc, IDTSInfoEvents infoEvents)

{

try

{

// // Create Task Element

XmlElement taskElement = doc.CreateElement("", Property_Task, "");

doc.AppendChild(taskElement);

// // Save source FileConnection

XmlAttribute sourcefileAttribute = doc.CreateAttribute(Property_SourceConnection);

sourcefileAttribute.Value = _sourceConnectionId;

taskElement.Attributes.Append(sourcefileAttribute);

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

infoEvents.FireError(0, "SaveXML", ex.Message, "", 0);

}

}

In UI Class there is OK Click event.

private void btnOK_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

{

try

{

_taskHost.Properties[CustomErrorControl.Property_SourceConnection].SetValue(_taskHost, propertyGrid1.Text);

btnOK.DialogResult = DialogResult.OK;

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

Console.WriteLine(ex);

}

#endregion

}
