VB Express SQL Expert Needed For Merge Replication Support.

Sep 3, 2006

I have done a couple of little projects in VB express and was pleased with the results. Now I have something bigger in mind and need to know if VB express version of SQL will support merge replication. If not will the full version support it?
Thanks

Support For 3.5 Merge Replication Under SQL 2005

Dec 3, 2007

Been fiddling with SQL 2008 Nov CTP but now looking to deploy a 3.5 .sdf project using Merge replication. The 3.1 install sets up a web endpoint with sqlcesa30.dll and I have been running subscriptions just fine with that. But now I want to be able to create and manage my 3.5 publicatoin/subscriptions under SQL 2005 management console. I don't see how to create 3.5 sql ce databases there or to use 'configure web synchronization' to get a 3.5 web endpoint for syncing.

Am I missing something simple like registering the SQL CE 3.5 dlls to work with SQL management studio?
I want to install to this a production server with the smallest possible footprint and I do NOT want to inject SQL 2008 Nov CTP bits into that production server at all! So, how to deploy SQL CE 3.5 to production and set up 3.5 merge replication under SQL 2005?

Merge Replication: Does It Support UDTs && Defaults

Feb 27, 2003

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone help me with this little problem that im stuck with.
As part of the initial snapshot using merge replication, i am creating the initial schema on the subscriber database however it seems as though it does not like UDDTs or defaults and hence does not create them on the subscribers.

Its looking likely that I may have to create a script which executes on the subscriber which creates the initial schema then use merge replication to transfer data.

Does Merge Replication support UDTs/Defaults? If so how does it work?

Ive search many places though have come up with nothing.

Please help. = (

Merge Replication - One Way Data Flow - Help Needed...

Apr 24, 2007

Hi,

We have configured one-way merge replication in our topology. That is data flows from Subscriber to Publisher only. We have a publisher and a subscriber. There are 3 publications in this category and each publication has a subscription. We use SQL Server 2005 SP1 in both the servers. The retention period is the 14 days (default). After this period, I get the following error in the subscription in Replication Monitor. The Error message is

Error messages:

The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Publisher for changes not yet sent to the Subscriber. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload). (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199402)

I read the post http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspxPostID=372790&SiteID=1

which said that this error might be solved in the SP2. We have not yet applied SP2, but even after applying SP2, will this error be solved for One Way Merge Replication since the data from publisher will not go to the subscriber always in this type of topology??.

Kindly get back to us regarding this as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

Merge-Replication - Transaction Log Is Growing Largely - Help Needed...

Apr 25, 2007

Hi,

We have configured the following in the Publisher server..

1) Merge Replication - Synchronisation to be running in the continuous mode.

2) Merge Replication - Synchronisation in Scheduled mode.

The issue that we are facing here is the transaction log file of the databases which are in replication are growing very largely. And we get this error message in the Subscriber :

Error messages:

The Merge Agent failed to retrieve article information for publication 'MCC_Pos_CashlessPub'. Increase the -QueryTimeOut parameter and restart the synchronization. When troubleshooting, use SQL Profiler or restart the agent with a higher value for -HistoryVerboseLevel and check the output log file for errors. Correct any database engine conditions that may be causing internal replication stored procedures to fail. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147201017)
Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL-2147201017

The transaction log for database 'tempdb' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 9002)
Get help: http://help/9002

In fact for the past two days there are no data movement or any changes to the table, still we are able to see the growth in the transaction log file.

As mentioned in the error description when checked the log_reuse_wait_desc column of the sys.databases table, it showed the value "LOG_BACKUP". So took database backup 3 times. and took transaction log backup 2 times from the subscriber server in which the error was thrown. Still the issue persists. There is no change in the transaction log size.

What is the reason behind the growth of LDF?? Is it because of Merge Replication Configured in the server??

Kindly check and let as know regarding this issue. We are facing lot of problems because of this issue. Thanks in advance.

A Little Basic Help Needed (SQLServer 2005) Merge Replication

Jul 29, 2006

Hi all,

We are using SQL Server 2005, on Windows server 2003 R2.

We Have Two Database Servers say DBServer1 and DBServer2, Now I wants to do Replication between these to servers, such that

1. The Changes at DBServer1 should be reflected at DBServer2
2. The Changes at DBServer2 should be reflected at DBServer1
3. Changes includes Data changes and Schema Changes
4. After every Synchronization Both Databases should be Identical

I tried doing so, what i did was
I cofigured Distribution at DBServer1, also Publisher and Publication at DBServer1
and Made a Subscription at DBServer2.

What I successfully done is
If Publisher means DBServer1 do some changes then it gets updated at DBServer2.
But New Rows added at DBServer2 doesn't gets added at DBServer1

Thanks in Advance,

Expert Help Needed

Feb 20, 2001

Has anyone any suggestions how I might find the most recent of a series of dates from different tables? I am joining tables which all have a date_altered field and I am only interested in displaying the most recent of these. Eg.

select a.x,b.y,c.z, a.date_altered, b.date_altered, c.date_altered
from a inner join b on (a.id=b,id) inner join c on (b.id=c.id)

What I would like is in effect a function Highest() Eg.

select a.x,b.y,c.z, highest(a.date_altered, b.date_altered, c.date_altered) as last_alteration
from a inner join b on (a.id=b,id) inner join c on (b.id=c.id)

I am using SQL Server 7 so cannot write myself a function to achieve this - frustrating, as it is something I could have done 4 years ago when I used mostly Oracle.
Many thanks

How To Setup Merge Replication With Sql Express

Jun 12, 2007

I have a Windows Mobile aplication that uses merge replication to synchronize between sql compact and full sql Enterprise edition and It works great. Instantiating the SqlCeReplication object setting it's properties and calling Synchronize on it is pretty simple assuming everything is setup properly at the publisher.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to do this on the desktop (Programatically setup a subscription and create a database using objects in the System.Replication Namespace and hopefully call Synchronize on it).

Someone please point me in the right direction.

Merge Replication Questions [SQL2k5 Non Express]

Jun 1, 2006

I can choose synchronization direction for articles: a) Bidirectional b) one way

1) Is that possible somehow to replicate the schema only of an article but no synchronization / zero direction :-)/

2) Same question about columns, I should replicate schema only for few columns, but without data synch. These columns are freely updateable at anywhere (publisher and subscribers), but the data changes shouldn't be replicated.

Thanks for the answers in advance

We Use Merge Replication And Want To Move From MSDE To Express - Advice?

Apr 3, 2007

Hi,

Our current environment is: SQL Server 2000 backend; XP/Windows 2000 clients with MSDE loaded; a Microsoft Access 2002 app using DSN to connect to the local MSDE database; Merge replication which is a job within the MSDE engine that we execute in VBA code using the following DMO code:

' Find the Job name to execute

lngJobCount = oServer.JobServer.Jobs.Count

lngJobIndex = 1

blFoundJob = False

While lngJobIndex <= lngJobCount And blFoundJob = False

strJobName = oServer.JobServer.Jobs.Item(lngJobIndex).Name

Me.lstJobs.AddItem strJobName, 0

If InStr(1, strJobName, "LEXData", vbTextCompare) > 0 Then

If InStr(1, strJobName, strServerName, vbTextCompare) Then

blFoundJob = True

End If

End If

lngJobIndex = lngJobIndex + 1

Wend

' Execute the job

If blFoundJib Then

Set oServer1 = New SQLDMO.SQLServer

With oServer1

.LoginSecure = True

.Connect strServerName

End With

Set oJob = oServer1.JobServer.Jobs(strJobName)

End If

We are now planning a move to a SQL Server 2005 backend and Express edition on the clients and the app would remain as Access 2002. Any pointers to documents that will be useful would be appreciated but I have a couple of specific questions as well.

1) As I understand it we can load Express side by side with MSDE so we will probably go down that path and load the data from MSDE into an Express version of the database. Once that's done we will create a DSN pointing to the new database and name it the same as the DSN which is currently used for the MSDE database. If we do this will our Access app simply work as before (ignoring replication)?

2) When we have our app happily running against a DSN that points to an Express database would we expect our existing DMO code (as above) to work, e.g. find a particular job in a list jobs and executes it? I can see that the replication job itself may have to be rejigged for Server 2005.

TIA - Peter

MSDE 2000A Upgrade To SQL Express SP1 With Merge Replication

Feb 8, 2007

Hello,

I have the following scenario. An application using SQL Server 2000 SP3 on the server side and clients using MSDE 2000A (SP3a) on the client machine. Since the client is offline quite often merge replication is used to keep the clients in sync.

Now we try to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 SP1. The publisher and distributor upgrade (on the same box) worked fine and all clients could still synchronize. Fine :-)

Now we try to upgrade the clients to SQL Express SP1. Now the problems start :-(

1) After the upgrade the entry within the Synchronization Manager is gone (we can overcome this by using sp_MSregistersubscription or by manually disable and enable Synchronization manager on the subscription properties)

2) Initial Synchronization (takes a long time but) works fine, if I apply changes to the subscriber or force a reinitialize all following synchronization will fail. With the following messages:

Error messages:
The merge process could not clean up the subscription to 'tstvmw23':'TestBase:'TestBase'. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147200965)
Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL-2147200965
New request is not allowed to start because it should come with valid transaction descriptor. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 3989)
Get help: http://help/3989

Remark the test system I use is a nearly empty db (only with full schema and a few lookup tables) with 15MB. The same error occures if I create a new database an subscribe to the same publication.

Please help otherwise I'm forced to step back to MSDE.

Thanks in advance,

Thomas Hotz

Help Needed For Transaction Support In SQL Server 2005

Jun 21, 2006

Hi,I have 2 stored procedure 1st insert the data in parent tables and return the Id. and second insert child table data using that parent table id as paramenter. I have foreign key relationship between these two tables also.my data layer methods somewhat looks likepublic void Save(order value){using (TransactionScope transactionScope = new TransactionScope(TransactionScopeOption.Required))         {              int orderId =  SaveOrderMaster(value);            value.OrderId = orderid;              int childId = SaveOrderDetails(value);             //complete the transaction              transactionScope.Complete();        }}here  1. SaveOrderMaster() calls an stored procedure InserOrderData which insert a new record in order table and return the orderId  which is identity column in Order table.2. SaveOrderDetails() call another sotored procedure which insert order details in to table "orderdetail" using the foreign key "orderid".My Problem:Some time the above method works correctly but when i call it repeatledly (in a loop) with data,  some time it gives me foreign key error which state that orderid is not existsin table Order. This will happen only randomly. I am not able to figureout the reason. does some one face the same problem. if yes, what could be the reason and/or solution.

Help Needed With Merge Join

Jan 10, 2008

I am trying to use the merge join example in the following link. To import new records only.

http://www.sqlis.com/311.aspx

The problem is that for some unkown reason the join is not woeking correctly. One of the records is incorrectly showing a NULL on the output. This would indicate that it would be a new record, but it is not it already exists in the new table.

I created a dummy table in SQL and executed the same join and I always get the right answer. What the heck could be wrong?

For example. Table A has 20 records Table B has 3 records. Table B has the new records I want to import into Table A. The package runs corectly the first time, only importing the 3 new records. Then the next time the package runs it shows 1 of the 3 records as being new still, and tries to import the record causing a PK error. Adding a watch to the MERGE output shows that the one record has a NULL on the join.

Please help this is driving me nuts.

How Do We Add A New Column To A Merge Replication Article, But Specify It As Not For Replication?

Aug 30, 2007

Hi all,

I know that adding a column using ALTER TABLE to add a column automatically allows SQLSERVER 2005 to replicate the schema changes to the subscribers, however, I would like to add a new column to an existing article that is being used for merge replication, however, I don't want this column to be replicated. Re-initialising the subscriptions is not a option. Help would be appreciated.

I am using SQLSERVER 2005 (SP1).

Problem Dropping Replication Support

Jan 14, 2006

I am working on establishing a merge replication process between SQL Server 2005 and SQL Mobile 2005. I started with a new SQL Server 2005 instance and went through the Sample for SQL Mobile merge replication. So far so good.

Today, I tried to drop all support for replication on my current SQL 2005 test instance, so that I can start from a fresh instance and do another. I used Management Studio to drop all publisher and distribution settings and had several errors occur, where some roles were not allowed to be dropped because they had membership in them.

I dropped all the users that I added to the SQL logins and tried again.

Now I am trying to run the following script:

use AdventureWorks
exec sp_replicationdboption @dbname = N'AdventureWorks', @optname = N'merge publish', @value = N'false', @ignore_distributor = 'true'

-- Dropping the distribution publishers
exec sp_dropdistpublisher @publisher = N'XP-MIKED-LAPTOP'
GO

-- Dropping the distribution databases
use master
exec sp_dropdistributiondb @database = N'distribution'
GO

/****** Uninstalling the server XP-MIKED-LAPTOP as a Distributor. Script Date: 1/14/2006 2:16:29 PM ******/

use master
exec sp_dropdistributor @no_checks = 1, @ignore_distributor = 1
GO

The error I am getting from the first batch (sp_replicationdboption) is this:

Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_MSmergepublishdb, Line 103
Invalid object name 'dbo.sysmergesubscriptions'.

To me it looks like all the publication objects have been already removed from AdventureWorks, but in sysdatabases, the category column still says 4 (merge publication). Since I can't just do this anymore:

UPDATE MASTER.DBO.SYSDATABASES
set category = 0
where dbid=8

I just don't know what I can do at this point. I can't even create a new publication in AdventureWorks because it thinks there is a sysmergepublications table in there and fails when there isn't.

Problems With Sync_type 'replication Support Only'

Jun 30, 2006

Hi,
I try to setup a transactional push replication from MS SQL Server 2005 to Sybase ASE 12.5.3. ASE is known to MS SQL Server as a linked server using OleDB.
As table schema and data are valid at subscriber site I don't need a initial snapshot for the replication.
So I do some tests with sync_type (sp_addsubscription). First I tried 'none'. That works fine.
But the documentation says that it is depricated an I should use 'replication support only'.
But with this syn_type replication stops because is sends the following commands to the subscriber:

--
-- Transactional replication custom procedures for publication 'kunktable_pub' from database 'kunktest2':
--
----
---- Replication custom procedures will not be scripted for article 'kunktable' because the auto-generate custom procedures schema option is not enabled.
----

IF (@@microsoftversion >= 0x09000000) BEGIN EXEC sys.sp_MSrepl_setNFR @schema = N'dbo', @object_name = N'kunktable' END

Of cause Sybase ASE throws an error 137 'Must declare variable '@@microsoftversion' because it has no system variable @@microsoftversion. Furthermore a procedure sys.sp_MSrepl_setNFR is not known at ASE site.

So it seems, that sync_type ''replication support only' only works for MS subscriber but not for ODBC or OLEDB based subscriber like SYBASE.

Question:
Do I miss something ?
Is this a bug ?
Which sync_type should I use ?

Regards
Wolfgang

Merge Replication Set Off Transactional Replication

Oct 9, 2007

I am working on bringing our disaster recovery site to be a live site. Currently we replicate to one of out servers (server B) with merge replication (from server A). Server A also does one way transactional replication form some table to several other servers including servers at the DR site.

This setup is not going to be fast enough for what we need so I am wondering if a table is receiving merge replication will the merge updates also replicate down the transaction path??

Example...
Server B update a row and merges to Server A. With this update them replicate (via transactional) to Server C??

thanks...

Replication :: Current Transaction Cannot Be Committed And Cannot Support Operations That Write To Log File

Nov 4, 2015

After I watch a video for how to create MS SQL Replication, I configure distribution and create the publication. The problem comes from subscription. If I create a "PUSH" subscription, it works fine. However, when I create a "PULL" subscription, I got the following error. Where I should look for solution for this error.

Looking For Feedback: Native 64-bit Support In SQL Express

Aug 29, 2007

Hi All,

I have another set of questions for the group to help guide me in planning future versions of SQL Express, this time related to 64-bit support.

Quick History

In SQL Server 2005, SQL Express was only released in the 32-bit architecture. We supported installation to x64 computers using the Windows on Windows implementation that allowed the 32-bit program to install on 64-bit computers. We released two different installer packages, SQLEXPR32.EXE could only be installed on 32-bit platforms, while SQLEXPR.EXE could be installed on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms, but was the exact same db engine. Package size differences were the result of additional files needed to support WoW installation.

Now to the Point

A number of people have asked that we release a native 64-bit version of SQL Express, which leads me to my questions for this thread:

What advantages will a native 64-bit Express offer you?

Does a 64-bit Express eliminate the need to support 32-bit WoW? (Consider that without WoW, we would not have a single package that could install on both architectures.)

If you could only have either native 64-bit Express or WoW support, which would you choose? (Bonus if you tell me why. )

What user/application scenarios are driving your need for native 64-bit Express?
Once again, I will try to limit my participation in this thread, since it's all about your feedback, but I will be reading it closely. I appreciate the effort you put into answering my questions and want to assure you that your feedback is a significant part of how I plan the future of SQL Express. As always, you can answer directly in this thread or respond to me directly, just remove the word "online" from the e-mail address in my profile.

Let the feedback begin,

Mike Wachal

SQL 2005 Express Together With SQL 2000 Ent.edt. Microsoft Support

Mar 27, 2007

Does Microsoft officially support installing SQL 2005 Express on a server where SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition is already running (a has to keep running).

In case they do, where do i find this official info / note.

Have they released white papers on this matter?

I know it is possible to install the two together and that they can coexist, but I am worried about how the two SQL installations wil behave when being updated with patches, security updates, service packs etc. do you run the possibility of them corrupting each other? Therefor it is vital to know if Microsoft supports the two running on the same system.
