VB.NET Login (SQL Server 2005) Error: Communication With The Underlying Transaction Manager Has Failed

Mar 4, 2008

Hi all,
I am trying to setup a VB.Net development environment on my desktop for one of the application which was already in the production for couple of years (some unknown contractor(s) developed and maintained it so far). The application works fine on the web.
Visual Studio 2005, .Net 2.0, SQL 2000, SQL Server 2005 were installed on my desktop. When I try to build the entire application/solution in the debug mode (i.e., with http://localhost/), build succeeds and I could get to the login.aspx. When I try to login, I am getting an error in the Visual Studio at the following code;connection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
connection.Open()

 saying "Communication with the underlying transaction manager has failed", "System.Transactions.TransactionManagerCommunicationException was unhandled by user code". And the web browser displays the following error "Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component".
     When I try to connect the SQL Server 2005 with the same ConnectionString attributes by going to Tools>Connect to Database, it works fine. But, through application connection.Open() giving above errors.
     I have set the MSDTC properties (i.e., under Component Services>MyComputer Properties>Security Configuration) as below:-
Enabled Network DTC Access, Allow Remote Clients, Allow Remote Administration, Allow Inbound, Allow Outbound, No Authentication required - selected, Enabled XA Transactions...& DTC Logon Account is "NT AUTHORITYNetworkService".

Please help.
Thanks in advance,
Chandra

Error: The Connection Manager Failed To Defect From The Transaction.

Aug 3, 2007

Does anybody know what it means?
The context is: a package with a single Data Flow finishes with this error: [Connection manager "xxx"] Error: The connection manager failed to defect from the transaction.
All components inside the data flow reports a successfull green status, however the DataFlow Task remains yellow for a long time, when suddenly the package stops with the above message. Another information is that the table remains locked during package execution (a select on that table does not complete...). This is a serious issue, and I couldnt find any relevant information about that. Thanks in advance.

Error Msg: Login Failed For A User . For VS 2005 Websites With SQL Server 2005

May 30, 2008

Just installed SQL Server 2005 and tested my old VS 2005 ASPnet websites, which were connected toSQL Server 2000 databases before.  All my websites were created for local HTTP applications, coded with a connection string with User ID and Password.   The SQL Server 2000 was configured as mixed authentication (i.e. with User ID and Password).  These websites worked very well with SQL Server 2000 database server.Testing my old VS 2005 websites with SQL Server 2005 database, showed a 'Login failed for a User ''.' error msgalthough the 'Test Connection' on VS 2005 design showed a perfect query for e.g. a GridView control.  I have assured that the UserID/Password were correct for Management Studio Security object'slogin and Database Security's user.  The server instance was configured with mixed authentication mode.  One thing I am not sure of is, when clicking the Management Studio icon, a Connection dialog showed up, asking for a Windows or MIxed authentication?  I just stayed with the Windows authentication.  What does the authenticationmode have anything to do with the VS 2005 website connection?  Should I change to mixed authetnication mode?TIA,Jeffrey

Aspclassic On IIS7 SQL 2005. ODBC SQL Server Driver[SQL Server]Cannot Open Database Requested By The Login. The Login Failed

Apr 16, 2008

Hi all,

Have just tried my sql server 2005 connected asp classic website on II7 for the first time and have gotten some errors.
First off I have unchecked show friendly errors in IE and have enabled ASP to send error messages to the browser.

My error I get is when I execute a basic .asp page:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "mydatabasename" requested by the login. The login failed.
/index.asp, line 10 which is dbConnect.Open cstring

from this peice of code:

sub dbOpen()
set dbConnect = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cstring = "DSN=mysqldsn; Trusted Connection=yes"
dbConnect.Open cstring
end sub

I have gone into ODBC and have setup both a user dsn and file dsn that equals mysqldsn and points to my database (I know you only need to set up one DSN but I'm not sure which)

I also notice under mywebsite home panel there is a connection string option. Do I do anything with that?

Definatley a lot more to it than XP's II6!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can No Longer Access Report Manager - The Underlying Connection Was Closed: An Unexpected Error Occurred On A Receive.

Apr 11, 2008

Hi,

For a long time I've had SQL Server 2000 with RS on a Server2003 machine.
When I want to publish a report from my Dev box, I remove anon. access on the Production machine, deploy the report, then go into report manager to tweak a couple of parameters. I then re-enable anon. access so users can continue.

Yesterday, I removed anon. access and deployed the report but when I went into Report Manager I received the above error message... "The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive."

I can get into report manager with anonymous access enabled, but I don't have authority to do anything.

What's happened!!!? More importantly, how do I fix it?

Is this something to do here?

Note: If I run the below statement I know that the SQL Error log entry will go off, but wanted to know the real significance of this error?

Error : Cannot Open User Default Database. Login Failed. Login Failed For User 'server/user'

Nov 22, 2007

i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.

then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:

"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"

even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.

why ?

Apr 17, 2007

Hi,all BI experts here,

Thank you very much for your kind attention.

I am having a problem with connecting to SQL Server 2005 database from Office Business Scorecard Manager 2005 (the connection string i am using is: provider=SQLOLEDB;Data source=server_name; Initial catalog=database_name). But the connection failed. Would please any experts here shed me any light on what is the problem and how to fix it then? As there is no any forum for Office Business Scrorecard manager 2005. Therefore I post my thread here as it is related to the connection to SQL Server 2005 database engine, thought here is the best place for this question.

Thank you very in advance for your kind advices and help. And I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

With best regards,

Link Server Error: Login Failed For User 'Domainuser'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)

Oct 18, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to create a linked server between 2 SQL Server 2005 boxes.
When I create the linked server I specify a login for the connection.
The strange part is that I get the following error when it goes to test the connection:

The test connection to the linked server failed
Login failed for user 'Domainuser'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)

I can use the SQL mangement studio to conenct to the database using this same login.
The login has all the server roles assigned to it also.

Can anyone shed some light as to what may be the problem?

Thanks,

Server Error - Login Failed - Plz Help

May 10, 2004

I wrote a code to check and validate the username and password against the database and redirect the user based on the user flag as follows:

Dim MyConnection As SqlConnection
Try
If Page.IsValid Then
Dim strUsername As String = txtUsername.Text
Dim strPassword As String = txtPassword.Text
Dim DS As DataSet

Dim MyCommand As SqlDataAdapter

Dim SelectCommand As String = "select userid, flag from employees where username = @login and password = @password"

MyConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=localhost;Integrated Security=SSPI;" & _
"Initial Catalog=rfd;")
MyCommand = New SqlDataAdapter(SelectCommand, MyConnection)

MyCommand.SelectCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@login", SqlDbType.Char, 10))
MyCommand.SelectCommand.Parameters("@login").Value = strUsername

MyCommand.SelectCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@password", SqlDbType.Char, 10))
MyCommand.SelectCommand.Parameters("@password").Value = strPassword

DS = New DataSet

MyCommand.Fill(DS)
'MyConnection.Close()

If DS.Tables(0).Rows.Count = 1 Then
Dim flag As String = DS.Tables(0).Rows(0)("flag")
Dim id As Integer = DS.Tables(0).Rows(0)("userid")

Session.Add("flag", flag)
If flag = "u" Then
Session.Add("userid", id)
Session.Add("Page", "user")
Response.Redirect("user_index.aspx")

msg1.Text = "Username or Password incorrect: Please Try again"
End If
End If
Finally
Session.Timeout = 10
MyConnection.Close()
End Try

End Sub

However, when I run it, it points as the line " MyCommand.Fill(DS)" and said Server Error - Login failed for user/aspnet. Where should look and what should I ckeck? Please help me !

SQL Server 2005 Login Failed For User Sa

Mar 2, 2007

I have not been able to install SQL Express SP2 (standard or advanced) on Vista Ultimate (RTM). Every time I try to install, I get the following error message:

SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'sa'. Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information.

When I check the logs, the only information I can find that is at all useful is:

Has anyone else run into this issue and resolved it? I have seen posts for earlier versions of SQL Express that said to run the configuration manager and change the account types to Local System rather than Network Service, but I don't have the configuration manager installed. If I set the accounts to use Local System by changing the login info during setup, I get the same error.

Thanks,

Mark

SQL Server 2005 - Service Acct - Login Failed?

Nov 14, 2007

I've got a weird issue on my hands. I've got a 2 node/instance SQL 2005 SP2 Enterprise cluster on Server 2003 Enterprise, that's getting an odd event log error over and over. The service account that runs everything (SQL Services, Agent, Analysis Svcs, etc...) is a domain admin. The account is not locked out. SQL Server seems to be running fine. But, if you look in the SQL Server logs or the application logs, all you see are thousands of errors just like this:

Type: Failure Audit
Source: MSSQLSERVER
Event ID: 18456
Login failed for user 'domainServiceAccount'. [CLIENT: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]

(BTW - the ip addr in the error is of that virtual instance of SQL Server.)

On the Server Evt log, it only shows up in the App log. In the security log, all of the audits related to this service acct are successes.

It happens on both instances of the 2005 cluster. But my SQL 2000 cluster (which uses the same service account) is having no problems at all. I've tried everything I could think of to diagnose/fix the issue and just can't seem to figure it out.

- verify that BUILTINAdministrators is an SA in SQL
- verify that NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM is an SA in SQL
- verify that the service account is an admin on both physical boxes.
- verify that there are no 'deny' permissions set on any of the system databases for the service account (or the two above built in groups).

Any ideas? I can't find anything on the web about it that's helped so far. Basically everything seems to be negated by the fact that the account is NOT locked out and the fact that the account is a domain admin. Luckily it's not causing any problems for me (at the moment), but I'm trying to diagnose a different issue and I can't seem to shake the possibility that both of the issues are related.

SQL Server ODBC Error 80004005: Login Failed

May 7, 2007

Hello,

Until a few weeks ago I was very satisfied with my frontend/backend application Access 2003/SQL Server Express. Then I tried to build a website with Dreamweaver 8.0 and connect it to the Server DBase and everything went wrong. My problems are the following:

In trying out the connection between DW and SQL I tried and changed some things with no result. I suddenly got a problem with the Norton firewall (wurms part) and with the named instance. At this very moment I sometimes have to switch from ".SQLEXPRESS" to "<machinename>SQLEXPRESS under Windows authentication. (provider: TCP provider, error 0 - no connection because of an active refuse of the goalcomputer)(MSQL Server error 10061). How can I solve this problem?
The connection between DW (using ASP) and SQL Server always gives the same error: "ODBC drivers error 80004005 cannot open database x requested by login. The login failed". I tried everything I know (that isn't much by the way) but getting no connection between the two programs. When I test the connection and the recordset in DW everything is OK. Anyone any suggestions?
The third problem is the most important. By doing things like (1) en (2) my frontend/backend database has become very very slow (it takes minutes to get a simple query done) and in fact doesnot function at all. When I look in de SQL part everything seems OK and I can open the tables quickly, but in Access the menus work but the forms and queries don't. This problem is very essential to me and I hope there is a solution?

I hope I'll get some answers to the above questions.

Thanks in advance.

Cannot Open Database XXXX Requested By Login. The Login Failed. Login Failed For User 'xxx'

Mar 18, 2007

hi,
 so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login.  The login failed.  Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database.  I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account.  Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too.  But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database.  If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped.  Any ideas?
