VFPOLEDB Provider Access Denied Error On Linked Server
Apr 11, 2008
Hallo
i'm trying to connect a VFP DBC as a linked server on MSSQL2000sp3a, using following parameters:
Product name: VFP
Data source: \networkpath odbc
Provider: VFPOLEDB.1
No security context
I'm trying the same operation both from a W2000sp4 server (+ MDAC 2.8sp1 ?) and a WXPPsp2, against two identical copies of the DBC that resides on two different path (one on the final path and one on a test path).
From WXPPsp2 everything runs ok, from W2000 i'm always getting this error:
Error 7399: OLE/DB Provider 'VFPOLEDB' IUnknown::QueryINterface returned 0x80070005: Access Denied
(already reported in this thread, http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1832362&SiteID=1 but it didn't helped me)
The error happens independently from the user the query runs under (basicly AD account, both domain admin and normal user).
MSSQL runs under a domain account which have full permissions (for test purpose) on the directories where DBC reside.
I did no further modifications on the WXP machine in order to have the linked server running, simply it ran smoothly from the beginning.
Clearly the difference rely on the different OS... but what else?
i ran component checker to determine the MDAC version but some components version numbers slightly differs from the expected ones (eg. resulting version is 2.0.1064 versus 2.0.1022 expected in MDAC 2.8) so i suppose to have MDAC2.8 sp1 on the server.
thanks in advance

Hi Cindy,
After hours (days?) researching this, your name keeps popping up, you must be the GOTO person for VFP. So:
We have a server that runs a VFP application and stores .dbf free tables in a directory shared as F:apps ele.
I am working on an XPPro box running SQL Server Express 2005 using Management Studio Express.
I am logged on as a user with administrator rights for the domain
We would like to be able to query this data and move it to our SQL tables as needed.
Here is what I have:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'tele',
@srvproduct = 'VFP',
@provider = 'VFPOLEDB',
@datasrc = 'F:apps ele',
@provstr = 'VFPOLEDB.1'
GO
SELECT * FROM tele...PROSPECT_DIVU
Here is what I get:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "tele" reported an error. Access denied.
Msg 7301, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the required interface ("IID_IDBCreateCommand") from OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "tele".
I have tried:
exec sp_addlinkedsrvlogin
@rmtsrvname = 'tele',
@useself = false,
@locallogin = NULL,
@rmtuser = 'admin',
@rmtpassword = NULL
go
Same result.
I have also tried:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
'tele2',
'Jet 4.0',
'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'F:apps ele',
NULL,
'dBase IV'
GO
When I run:
select * from tele2...prospect_divu
I get:
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "tele2" returned message "The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object 'prospect_divu'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_COLUMNS" for OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "tele2". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.
What would you suggest?

I'm trying to export excel data to a SQL Server database as:
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0',
'Excel 12.0;Database=D:DATA_SOURCEData2.xlsx', 'SELECT * FROM [Sheet1$');
I get errors:

Is there any reason for this error message? Thanks.

Hello there,
I recently started having trouble with my local SQL Server 8.0 database server. When I try to start it with Enterprise Manager I get the following error:
An error 5 - (Access is denied) occured while performing this service operation on the MSSQLServer service.
Nothing showed up in the SQL Server error logs. If I try to connect to it using the SQL Server Management Studio that came with SQL Server 2005 I get the following (slightly more informative) message:
Cannot connect to (local) ... (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)
I'm not sure which log to look at in the MSSQL folders: MSSQL.1, MSSQL.2 or MSSQL.3.
Furthermore, if I manually start the MSSQLSERVER service, then I can connect just fine with the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio but still get the weird error message with SQL Server 8.0 Enterprise Manager.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I keep getting the error "Could not fetch a row from OLE DB provider 'VFPOLEDB' when I do a query on a FoxPro Linked Server through SQL 2000. If the query returns 0 rows I don't get an error I just get the structure of the table. But if the query returns rows I get the error. I can replicate this on a test machine but my development machine works fine.
I have checked the SVRNETCN and the CLICONFG apps in SQL Server and they seem to be set the same on both machines. I am using NamedPipes on the server. I tried starting the DTS and that didn't fix the issue.
Would anyone know what I don't have working correctly?
NOTE: I also posted this in the MSDN Newsgroups

I have a linked server defined on a SQL Server 2005 SP2 standard edition server using the IBMDASQL OLEDB driver. The linked server has been defined and working for months when used from a SQL Server authenticated session. I started converting our developers to Windows Authentication and access to the linked server is denied when used from a Windows Authenticated session. Here are the error messages:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "IBMDASQL" for linked server "DB2ARUBA" reported an error. Access denied.
Msg 7350, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot get the column information from OLE DB provider "IBMDASQL" for linked server "DB2ARUBA".
The linked server security is defined to login to the IBM iSeries using a fixed user and password regardless of the login using the linked server.
In order to analyze the problem, I created one sysadmin SQL Server authenticated login and one sysadmin Windows Authenticated login. The Windows Authenticated login refers to a domain login having administrator priviledges on the local SQL Server box.
So, when I connect to SQL Server using the SQL Authenticated login, a query against the linked server works. When I connect to SQL Server using the Windows Authenticated login, the exact same query against the linked server fails with the messages above.
Does anyone know why?

Hi forum
I'm developing a report in SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services based on a query from SQL Server tables joined with Visual FoxPro free tables. I created a Linked Server with Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Visual FoxPro provider, whith VFPOLEDB.1 string provider. Everything runs ok
within a Business Intelligence Development Studio environment, but when I implement my report, at runtime an error occurs it said "Cannot create an instance of OLE DB Provider VFPOLEDB object". I swtched any combination of Linked Server security and Provider security pages without to solve the problem.
Navigating the web today, I read a similar thread posted by stephanielauym
at April 3, 2006 but I`m not clear if she passed the issue or not. In case of yes, I would like to know how she solved it. I'proved among other with "Allow inprocess" but don't.
Please, if Stephany or Cindy (that she answered) or anyone knows how to solve this error, I'll thank very much.

In a previous post in Installation and Setup I was having problems just getting an ASP.NET 2.0 app to run on my web server. Now I'm having some different weird security issues.
I'm getting this message when just trying to open a database and put its contents into a gridview.
Access to the ADO.net Managed Provider 'SqlClientFactory' was denied in the data source with ID 'sqlEmployees' because of security settings.
I think this may have to do with our web server and our SQL server being separate machines. That always gives us issues. But I have impersonation=true in my web.config along with windows authentication and I have SQL Server configured with Windows and SQL authentication so things should be right, I'm thinking.
Any ideas??

Hi all,
I am currently working on a stored procedure in SQL 2000 where I use OPENROWSET function to read data from an Excel file into a temporary table.
It works fine when I logged in with username 'sa' and psswrd 'sa' but when I log in with another user name and password I get the following error:
"Ad hoc access to OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.40' has been denied.
You must access this provider through a linked server."
I am using VB 6.0 as front end. Is there anyway i can overcome this error?
Please help.

We have a SQL2005 server install running on a Win2003 Server. It has a linked server to iHistorian using the iHOLEDB provider for iHistorian. Randomly and after a few execution to this provider, we start getting errors
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "IhOLEDB.iHistorian" for linked server "fspheafhs1".I created a data source in VS2005 for BI on the SQL server using the iholedb provider. This was successful. However, all queries or OPENQUERY statements to the linked server fail. This seems to continue until SQL Server is restarted. Does anyone know how to reset a provider in SQL Server or tell if the SQL Server is having trouble with the provider? There are no message in the SQL Error Log. Again the provider continues to work outside of SQL Server, but no longer can be accessed from within SQL Server. Thanks in advance.

Hello, everyone!
I'm currently having an issue with a linked server. Here's the surrounding information:
A) I have a clustered SQL Server 2005 Instance (A) and a SQL Server 2000 instance (B).
B) There is a linked server on A to B. When I set it up, I did run the fix to ensure A could talk to B (There was an issue with communication between 2005 and 2000 servers). It has been there since I installed A, and has worked fine.. Until last week.
C) This linked server uses static credentials to connect to B.
D) Named Pipes are enabled on both servers to listen to both connections on both A and B in cliconfg. So A has a named pipe listening for B, and B has a named pipe listening for A.
E) A has a view that looks at a table on B - It's a table view, very simple, just pulls in all the data from the table on B.
So, I go to do a select statement from the view, connected as a user other then 'sa'. I then get the error:
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server Linked Server
Error Source: ncli Client (Paraphrasing, didn't copy that down, but it was the ODBC connector)
Well, that's odd. It's been working fine for months now..
I then go and connect as sa on A to query B. It works! Mind you, absolutely NO QUERY from A to B will run again until I run SOME kind of query has been run as sa on A.
Mind you, this is not a credential issue. Every user who connects to the linked server to B uses a stored credential that is DBO to the database on B. The same User Name and Password exists on both A and B.
Also of note, I check the activity monitor. There's a process that is "dormant" every time I run a query against the view. The details of this connection are:
sp_reset_connection;1
My question is, why is it resetting the connection on B when being queried from A? Why is it "all of a sudden" a problem? Are there any changes that coudl ahve been made that would cause this?
Any help with this confusing issue would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,
I'm working on an OLE DB provider. This provider is supposed to retrieve data from managed application running in background. The data retrieval is handled by C# component communicating with source application via remoting, the data are then exposed via component's COM interface. OLE DB provider itself instantiates the communication component.
Now, the problem: this worked ok in SQL server 2000, but it doesn't seem to work in SQL server express edition. Concretely, the communication component fails to get created (CoCreateInstance ends with 'class not registered') and SQL server logs this:
2007-08-24 14:48:49.42 spid51 Error: 6511, Severity: 16, State: 20.
2007-08-24 14:48:49.42 spid51 Failed to initialize the Common Language Runtime (CLR) v2.0.50727 with HRESULT 0x80131022. You may fix the problem and try again later.
I've googled a bit and found out someone else getting this message, and he was told something like 'trying to load CLR in some cases is disabled in newer (>2000) versions of SQL server'.
Now, I have very little knowledge of SQL server, CLR integration etc., so I'm not sure whether this applies to my case as well, but I think so - that problematic COM object is C#-based.
I'd be glad for any hints, ideas how to solve this issue, I just need the OLE DB provider to be able to access that managed application.
Thanks,L.

I just installed a SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 instance on a server with an existing SQL Server 2000 SP3 installation. (I need SQL Server 2005's INSERT from an EXEC capability). It's working great now except for one thing: I can't link any other SQL servers! I've already successfully added and queried a linked Oracle server, but attempting to add a linked SQL server gives me the following error, no matter which SQL provider I try to use:
Code Snippet
"The linked server has been created but failed a connection test. Do you want to keep the linked server?"
Additional information:
--> An exception occured while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)
--> Cannot create an instance of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SERVERNAME". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7302)
The technical details reveal the error source as "sp_testlinkedserver".
I've scoured the net and premier support for advice on this problem, but the little I found wasn't helpful. I've tried reinstalling the SQL Native Client, but it didn't help. I've tried uninstalling SQL Server 2005 Express completely (including management studio and native client), rebooting, and reinstalling everything, with no luck. The server (obviously) does not have a firewall enabled. I've tried stopping the SQL 2000 Server installed on the system, no help. If I create a test .UDL file on the system, pointing to any of the SQL servers I'm trying to link, clicking the "Test Connection" button returns successful. I'm also able to connect to and query the servers directly from the SQL 2005 Express Management Studio. I just can't add them as linked servers.
The server is running Windows 2003 SP1, SQL Server 2000 SP3, and SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 (the default "SQLExpress" named instance). I've tried setting up SQL 2005 Express to run under the network service account and under a domain account used by the other SQL 2000 servers.
From other SQL 2000 servers, I can connect and link to the SQL Server 2005 Express instance successfully. I can also successfully add linked SQL servers in SQL Server 2000 instance installed on the same server. Only adding linked SQL servers in 2005 Express seems to be broken.
Anyone have any other suggestions? I'm totally baffled. Thank you so much for any helpful advice.

I have built a web application that runs on my local web server against my local SQL server and my development server, but now I'm trying to get it to work on the live server and I'm not getting a connection. Whenever I try to open the connection, I get a.

Dim SQLServer As String = "xxx.xx.xx.xxx"
connString = "server=" & SQLServer & ";" _

myConnection2 = New SqlClient.SqlConnection(connString)

I'm starting my connection to run a datareader this way...
Dim strSQL As String
strSQL = "SELECT ClientID, ClientName " & _
"FROM Client; "
' Create a connection to the table in the SQL database located on
' the remote computer.
Dim myCommand2 As New SqlClient.SqlCommand(strSQL, myConnection2)

myConnection2.Open() 'HERE IS WHERE THE ERROR OCCURS
Dim myReader As SqlClient.SqlDataReader = myCommand2.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)
While myReader.Read()
---------------------------------------------------------------
I can communicate with the server with no problem from my local computer. I can ping the server, and I also tested it by creating a system DSN using the login and password in my application, and it finds the database with no problem. I've tried to connect using the SQL Server's server name and the IP address and both return the same result. I've also saw something in another post to set the trusted connection parameter to "yes" and that didn't work either.
I'm developing on a Windows XP Professional and I'm trying to connect to a Windows 2003 Server with SQL Server 2000 installed on the machine.
I did add the database by restoring a backup from my local server onto the live server. I don't think that should matter, but maybe it does. If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.

hello , i'm very new to sql server.
i'm using sql server 200 & winXP. I have a local server called "JO" and a dsn named "LocalServer".
Authentication is sql server authentication & window with username of "cying" and password "admin"
i can ping my server "JO" but cannot telnet it's sql_server_tcp_port.
this is the error code i obtained when try to open the connection:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
my connection string is as below :
set objcon = server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
strConnection = "Provider=MSDASQL;Driver={SQL Server};Server=local;Data Source=LocalServer;User ID=cying;Password=admin;Persist Security Info=False"
objcon.open, strConnection
is there anything wrong with my connection string or setting?
pls help, thanks in advance

Hi,
I have been for years using the following code locally in native ASP (except different UID and PWD and file path for the msado15.dll) with SQL Server 2000 on XP to do my development and then I upload to the web site later (uses different objConn etc when live). I've now tried to use the same for SQL Server Express and Vista and always get the "does not exist or access denied" error ( 2147467259).
I only want to use SQL Server locally from the machine I'm developing on as I upload the tested "ASP" code to the server which runs it. The SQL Server Browser is running and I have checked the Firewall exclusions for sqlservr.exe. Also I installed it with out Windows Logon (same as I had for SQL Server 2000).
Any ideas, I tried using the Data Source=localhost instead of explicitly defing the path except that had no affect either, I also changed the rshstest_data.mbf to rshstest.mbf as well also to no affect as there appears a difference with this in 2000 and Express?
Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks..

Hi!
I understand that this topic is one of the most discussed topics ever. However i could not find the relevant information after going through (almost) all the posts so far. Hence this post. I am getting the 'SQL Server does not exist or access denied' error when I am trying to access SQL Server from a WINDOWS SERVICE. SQL Server and the Windows service are running on two different machines. (When they are on the same machine, it works). All the solutions I found so far are related to web apps. What should I do in the case of a windows service? My connection string uses SQL server authentication. (I tried with windows authentication. Its not working either.). Under what login does windows services run and how can I add it to valid SQL server logins?
